W
hat does it take to have a successful business like King’s
Heating & Plumbing?
You have to enjoy what you do. That’s the advice of Jerry
King, president of King’s Heating & Plumbing, which is celebrating
its 70
th
anniversary in 2016.
The third-generation owner, King said he was taught the work
ethic it takes to run a business by his father, Ronald King, and his
grandfather, James, who founded the company in 1946.
“What I learned early on from my father and my grandfather
is pretty simple: hard work, honesty and to treat people as you
want to be treated,” King said. “The longevity of our business
has everything to do with these values combined with our loyal
customers and great team of employees.”
The business had humble beginnings — starting as a two-man,
one-truck operation. James King and Homer Johnson, a colleague
at Delco Radio, were looking for more from their careers than
what they thought Delco could provide.
So, after much deliberation, the duo decided to get into the
business of selling home appliances. Forming a partnership, they
each put in $1,500 and began searching for a location. The business
got its start on North Buckeye Street in a former dilapidated barber
shop. After some serious renovation, they were open for business
and selling New Home sewing machines.
Their partnership dissolved in 1948, and James went on in 1961
to purchase the property King’s Heating & Plumbing sits on
today at the corner of Union Street and Vaile Avenue. Four years
later, the name King’s Heating & Plumbing Inc. officially became
incorporated.
And today, after 70 years of hard work and dedication, the business
has grown into a 24-man operation with 22 signature red trucks
that have become recognizable across the city of Kokomo.
King’s has continued their focus on the core business and
continues to provide the most up-to-date products and ongoing
training for their employees.
They provide commercial and residential services including
plumbing parts, furnace filters, gas fireplaces, whole house
generators and more.
King’s appreciates being in Howard County and is grateful for the
loyalty the community has shown over the last 70 years.
