The Maples
Remembers Those Touched
by The Palm Sunday Tornados.
There are those at our campus who still recall the event
that occurred 50 years ago; the tragic tornados that
affected everyone in our community. We hear their
stories and are thankful that they are here with us today.
At the Maples, we’re here for our residents whether
they need an attentive listener or someone to provide
them with care they cannot provide themselves. We like
nothing better than helping those in our community
who have seen it all and done it all, and we do so with a
servant’s heart.
If you or a loved one is in need of such care, contact The
Maples at Waterford Crossing to learn more about our full
continuum of healthcare services.

Goshen teen used his radio to help send
word to families throughout the country
By DANIEL RIORDAN
WATERVLIET, Mich.
T
hys Van Hout couldn’t speak a word of English
when he and his family emigrated from The
Netherlands to Goshen in 1956.
Less than a decade later, it was his voice that was
responsible for relaying both messages of hope and
despair to people across the country after perhaps the
greatest tragedy in Elkhart County history.
With his own money, earned from a Goshen News
paper route, he bought short-wave radio equipment.
He earned a license from the Federal Communication
Commission to broadcast on that radio in 1961, the
same year he became a U.S. citizen.
The wall of electronics sat on a desk in the corner of
his bedroom in his childhood home at 912 S. Eighth
