DOROTHY ABIGAIL MERRIMAN

A memorial Mass for Dorothy Abigail Merriman, 87, of Crossville, who passed away May 14, 1998, was celebrated May 20 from St. Raphael's Episcopal Church. Burial is planned in Rogers Cemetery, Edmonton, KY.

She was born Feb. 1, 1911 in Larue County, KY, the daughter of James Robert Thompson and Lillian Ida Beauchamp Thompson.

Mrs. Merriman was a social worker and worked for the Red Cross. She was a member of the Episcopal church.

Survivors include her sister, Frances Thompson of Fairfield Glade; sister-in-law, Susan Hauk Thompson of Berkley, CA; and nephew, David B. Thompson of Oakland, CA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Aidan Merriman.

MARY KIRKPATRICK BARNETTE

Funeral services for Mary Kirkpatrick Barnette, 79, of Taylor Road, Crossville, who passed away May 14, 1998 in St. Thomas Hospital, were held May 17 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens.

She was born June 21, 1918, the daughter of Marshall and Annie McBee Moore.
Mrs. Barnette was a secretary, and she was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her sons, Bert Barnette of Greenville, SC, and David Barnette of Crossville; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jeff D. Barnette II; son, Jeff D. Barnette III; and brother, Mark Moore.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Barnette, Marty DeRossett, David Godsey, Pete Morris, Roy McChacon and Greg Parsons.

HARLAN C. KNUTSON

Funeral services for Harlan C. Knutson, 67, of Fairfield Glade, who passed away May 18, 1998, were scheduled for today, May 20, at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Dyer Funeral Home in Cookeville, with burial in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery.

He was born Nov. 3, 1930 in Iowa, the son of Chris E. and Leona Lee Knutson.
Mr. Knutson was a salesman with W.C.I., Frigidaire Freezer Division. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Knutson of Fairfield Glade; son, Chris H. Knutson of Minnesota; brother, William Knutson of Florida; and sisters, Marcie Jenkenson of Nebraska, Lucille Gorham of Iowa, and Vivian Knutson of Colorado.

ELIZABETH HIATT CLARK

Funeral services for Elizabeth Hiatt Clark, 80, of Fairfield Glade, who passed away May 13, 1998 in Cumberland Medical Center, were held May 16 from Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church.

She was born July 31, 1917 in Portland, IN, the daughter of Edgar Raymond and Mary Elizabeth Wright Hiatt.

Mrs. Clark was a homemaker, and she was a member of the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, David F. Clark of Fairfield Glade; and sisters, Joan H. Holmes of Connecticut, and Rose Mary Fagan of San Diego, CA.

JAMES HENRY DICKERSON

A funeral Mass for James Henry Dickerson, 78, of Fairfield Glade, who passed away April 30, 1998 was celebrated May 4 from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Burial was in Crossville City Cemetery.

He was born May 4, 1919 in Terre Haute, IN, the son of Jacob Earl and Florence B. Maloney Dickerson. Mr. Dickerson was a superintendent of environmental control for U.S. Steel. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, fourth degree; C.Y.O. Holy Name Society; and member and past president of Gary Works Supervisors Club.

Survivors include his wife, June Dickerson of Fairfield Glade; brothers, Charles (Margaret) Dickerson of Merrillville, IN, Fred (Ruth) Dickerson of Baton Rouge, LA, and John Dickerson of Fairfield Glade; sons, David (Lucille) Dickerson of Crown Point, IN, Thomas (Linda) Dickerson of Aurora, OH, George (Karen) Dickerson of Crossville, Russell (Susan) Dickerson of Fairfield Glade, Joseph (Doris) Dickerson of Webster, TX, and William (Debra) Dickerson of La Porte, TX; daughters, Susan (Peter) Edenfield of Franklin, TN, Barbara (Phillip) Bridges of Fairfield Glade, Marjorie (Timothy) Markham of Hickory, NC, Cynthia (Brian) Mang of Franklin, TN, and Dorothy (Jim) Baker of Fairfield Glade; 40 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

ROBERT RAY HEMBREE

Robert Ray Hembree, 72, of Teakwood Circle, Knoxville, passed away May 15, 1998. Graveside services will be announced at a later date.

He was born Aug. 15, 1925 in Cumberland County, the son of Doyle Leslie and Minnie Tabor Hembree. Mr. Hembree was a real estate salesman and of the Protestant faith. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his companion, Lou Juliano of Knoxville; sisters, Virginia Porter of Barrington, IL, and Gertrude Maloney of San Diego, CA; brother, Lindy Hembree of Albany, GA; cousin, Ridley Pruitt of Akron, OH; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

HOMER EDWARDS

Funeral services for Homer Edwards, 86, of Rockwood Health Care Center, formerly of Mountainview Road, who passed away May 3, were held May 6 from the Winton Chapel Church, with burial in Winton Chapel Cemetery.

The Rev. Edwards was a member of Mountainview Baptist Church, and pastored for numerous churches in Roane, Rhea and Cumberland County. He was a member of Rockwood Masonic Lodge #403.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Lee Edwards of Rockwood; daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Clyde Hickey and Frances and Gresten Russell, all of Rockwood; son and daughter-in-law, Buck and Patsy Edwards of Rockwood; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Amanda Dye Edwards; first wife, Bonnie Galyon Edwards; and grandchildren, David L. Hickey and Larry E. Hickey.

HELEN EPPOLITO

A memorial services for Helen Eppolito, who passed away May 3, 1998 in Cumberland Medical Center, will he held Saturday, May 30 at St. Raphael's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m., with interment in their Memorial Garden.

A visitation and reception with family and friends will follow at the church.
She was born March 23, 1925 in Erie, PA.
Mrs. Eppolito was Past Worthy Matron of Arcana Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She and her husband resided at Lake Tansi Village for many years before moving to Port Charlotte, FL.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Michael; daughter and son-in-law, Kandis and Rick Emmert of Naperville, IL; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Barb Eppolito of Porter, IN, and Peter and Donna Eppolito of Crossville; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Nancy Brown of Port Charlotte, FL; and eight grandchildren.

She was born Sept. 28, 1935 in Winchester, TN, the daughter of John and Eunice Morris Kelley.
Mrs. Hedgecoth was a nurse's aide, and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Blaine L. Hedgecoth, Crossville; sons, Gary Luna of Gassville, AR, James P. Hedgecoth of Alburntown, TN, and Jeff Hedgecoth of Long Beach, CA; grandchildren, Blaine E. DELLA MAE WOLFE

Funeral services for Della Mae Wolfe, 70, of Sandy Creek Road, Crossville, who passed away May 3, 1998 in Cumberland Medical Center, were held May 8 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens.

She was born Aug. 4, 1927 in Dayton, OH, the daughter of Edward and Nina Mae Campbell Hinders. Mrs. Wolfe was a homemaker and an avid bowler.

Survivors include her daughters, Debbie Wolfe of Nashville, and Nina Wolfe of Crossville; sons, Harry Wolfe Jr. of Cookeville, and Dannie Wolfe of Hawaii; grandchildren, Shawn, Joey, Duane, Rusty, Penny, Clark and Jessie; three great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry Hinders of Middletown, OH; and daughter-in-law, Karen Wolfe of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry R. Wolfe Sr., and granddaughter, Nikki Wolfe.

JOHN SAMUEL ARCHER SR.

Funeral services for John Samuel "Jack" Archer Sr., 63, of Lake Tansi and Fort Oglesthorpe, GA, who passed away April 25, 1998, were held April 28 at Battlefield Chapel of Heritage Funeral Home, with burial in Lakewood Memorial Gardens, South.

Mr. Archer was a resident of Chattanooga and North Georgia for the past 41 years, and he was a prominent football coach in that area. A member of First Baptist Church in Fort Oglethorpe, he was named Georgia Coach of the Year in 1971 and 72. He was assistant principal, athletic director as well as head football coach at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School, and was recreation superintendent for the city of Fort Oglethorpe for more than 25 years.
He played football for Ohio State University, playing in the Rose Bowl in 1955.
Survivors include his wife, Lila Whitman Archer; son, Jay Archer of Chattanooga; daughters, Laurie Bowman of Flintstone, GA, and Michelle Sims of Cartersville, GA; mother, Dorothy Archer Bridge of Rossville, GA; and five grandchildren.

ALICE MAE BAKER

Graveside services for Alice Mae Baker, 83, of Old Highway 28, Crossville, who passed away April 27, 1998, were held May 2 at Linary Cemetery.

She was born March 29, 1915 in Jefferson County, TN, the daughter of Andrew Jackson Baker and Mary Elizabeth Moore Baker.

Ms. Baker was a school teacher.
Survivors include her nieces, Bobbie Hamby of Crossville, and Nancy Lavender of Wetumpka, AL; and nephews, Hudson B. Eldridge of Arkansas, and Rolfe Eldridge of Austin, TX.

MANZA ALICE GODDARD

Funeral services for Manza Alice Goddard, 79, of Reed Road, Crossville, who passed away May 3, 1998, were held May 5 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Linary Cemetery.

She was born June 24, 1918, in Cumberland County, the daughter of Owen and Addie Alice Hale Brown. Mrs. Goddard was a nurse's aide and member of Stephen Gap Church of Christ.

Survivors include her daughters, Opal Hassler and Norma McElhaney, both of Crossville; son, Tom Hall of Crossville; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Christine Lockhart of Indiana, Ida Frady of Big Lick, and JoAnn Wyatt of Tansi; and brothers, Luther Brown of Big Lick, and Willard Brown of Linary.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Allan Hall and Charles Goddard; parents, Owen and Addie Brown; stepmother, Lillie Brown; sons, Leslie Hall and Randy Goddard; daughter, Addie Mae Hall; granddaughter, Marsha Ann Hassler; and brothers, Wilker, James and Carson Brown.

SAMUEL PATTERSON PARTIN

Funeral services for Samuel Patterson Partin, 82, of Crossville, who passed away May 1, 1998, were held May 4 from the chapel of Burris Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens.
He was born Oct. 23, 1915, in Franklin County, TN, the son of Abner and Cassie Duncan Partin.
Mr. Partin was an electrical engineer for Western Electric Manufacturing, and a member of First Baptist Church, and Telephone Pioneers of America.

Survivors include his wife, Helen J. Partin of Crossville; son, Samuel Patterson Partin III of Conway, AR; brother, Abner Duncan Partin of Florida; sisters, Vivian Simmons of St. Petersburg, FL, Lilly Tucker of Macon, GA, and Madaline Minor of Macon, GA.

ELMO EMERSON ROBBINS

Elmo Emerson Robbins, 75, of Kingston, TN, passed away May 5, 1998.
He was born Sept. 30, 1922 in Powder Mill Hollow in Campbell County, the son of James McKinley and Ophelia Peters Robbins.

Mr. Robbins served his country during World War II in the South Pacific, and he was retired from Y-12 in Oak Ridge, TN, after 31 years.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Marcene O'Strand Robbins; aunt, Clida Jarnigan of Knoxville; children, Keith Robbins of Crossville, Rise Wilkinson of Evergreen, CO, and Wayne Robbins of Kingston; grandchildren, Emily and Lindsay Robbins of Crossville, and Jonelle, Joel and Ashley Wilkinson of Evergreen, CO; and several cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by infant brother, James McKinley Robbins Jr. The family will receive friends at Kyker's Funeral Home in Kingston tomorrow evening, May 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. EDT.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mr. Robbins' memory to either the Friends of the Library in Kingston or the American Cancer Society.

JOE EDWARD WALKER

Funeral services for Joe Edward Walker, 66, of West Creston Road, Crossville, who passed away April 30, 1998, were held May 3 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Sand Springs Cemetery.
He was born Feb. 5, 1932 in Putnam County, TN, the son of William and Delma Johnson Walker.

Mr. Walker was a well driller and of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Janice Walker of Jamestown; grandchildren, Martha and Dolly Weaver of Jamestown; mother, Delma Walker of Crossville; brother, Ray Walker of Monterey; and sisters, Geraldine Cooper of Mayland, and Jean Shirley of Crossville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Mae Slagen Walker.

Funeral services for Henry Gibson, 84, of Sawmill Road, Crossville, who passed away May 1, 1998, were held May 2 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home. The Crossville Masonic Lodge No. 483 F&AM conducted Masonic rites at Whitaker Cemetery on May 3.

He was born Sept. 5, 1913 in Tippah County, MS, the son of WIlliam Gibson and Ethel Smith Gibson.
Mr. Gibson was a retired businessman and attended Homestead Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Sue Gibson of Crossville; daughters, Eloise Tillson of Water Valley, MS, Mary Dell Goldsby of Memphis, Yvonne Bertram of Crossville, and Lisa Farvin of Knoxville; sister, Artie Walker of Memphis; brother, Ray Gibson of Olive Branch, MS; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ethel Gibson; sisters, Billie Turner, Mary Hill and Arvie Barlow; and brothers, George, Thomas and Walter Gibson.

Funeral services for Woodrow W. Rogers, 82, of Gainesboro, TN, who passed away May 2, 1998, were scheduled for today, May 5 at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Anderson Funeral Home in Gainesboro, with burial in Rob Draper Memorial Cemetery in the Stone community of Jackson County.

He was born April 14, 1916 in Jackson County, the son of James and Amanda Bailey Rogers.
Mr. Rogers served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retired employee of Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria, IL.

Survivors include his son, Gary W. Rogers of Houston, TX; daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Ann Martin, and Robbie and Ron Goodwin, all of Peoria, Patricia and Bernard Lyon of Wauwatosa, WI, Cathy and Russell Hyde of Princeville, IL, and Ramona and David Barrett of Canton, IL; brother, Edward Rogers of Crossville; sisters, Clara Bailey of California, Dorothy Jackson of Gainesboro, and Bonnell Biggers of Red Boiling Springs, TN, nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

GALEN ROSS HUMBLE

A memorial service for Galen Ross Humble, 29, of Crossville, who passed away April 26, 1998, was held April 29 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home.

He was born March 5, 1969 in Spearfish, SD, the son of Carroll and JoAnn Kirkendoll Humble.
Mr. Humble was a bull rider.
Survivors include his mother, Joann Foertsch of New Castle, WY; sisters, Linda Bruce, Glenda Hedgecoth, Alma Smith, Alta Bainer and Tina Humble; brothers, Junior Humble, Pat Netherton and Billy Netherton; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Debbie Gunter.

Funeral services for William Mack Parks, 58, of the Smith Chapel community, who passed away April 26, 1998 in St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville, were held April 29 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Smith Chapel Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 12, 1939 in Scott County, TN, the son of James and Flora Randolph Parks.
Mr. Parks was in construction and a member of the Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Lawson Parks of Crossville; sons, Donnie, Lonnie, Steve and Scottie Parks, all of Crossville; daughters, Joy Flagg of Franklin, and Sherry Parks and Sharon Crockett, both of Crossville; nine grandchildren; brother, Danny Parks; sisters, Frances Fish, Wilma Lawson, Doris Miller and Judy Waldo, all of Crossville, and Nancy Williams of Sparta; and special sister-in-law, Judy Parks of Pleasant Hill.

She was born June 2, 1913 in Overton County, TN, the daughter of Steve and Belle Wilson Ashburn. Mrs. Taylor was a homemaker and of Protestant faith.

Survivors include her daughters, Joyce Webb and Shelby Webb, both of Crossville; brother, Herman Ashburn, of Crossville; sister, Vernie Livesay of Crossville; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Belle Wilson Ashburn; sister, Pairlee Livesay and Addie Ashburn; and brothers, Earl Ashburn, Earby Ashburn and Thurman Ashburn.

Funeral services for Rita C. Barnwell, 41, of Fourth Street, Crossville, who passed away April 28, 1998, will be held at 2 p.m. May 2, from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Slate Springs Cemetery.

She was born July 18, 1956 in Cumberland County, the daughter of Noah and Dimple Davis Adams. Mrs. Barnwell was a housewife and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Barnwell; daughters, Kristy and Amy Barnwell; mother, Dimple Davis Adams; brother, Roger Adams; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Noah Adams.

She was born Feb. 3, 1906 in Cumberland County, the daughter of Marion Francis Lawson and Flora Mae Moore Lawson.

Mrs. Cordell was a homemaker and member of Church of God of Prophecy.
Survivors include her daughters, Christine Franklin of Fort Worth, TX, and Georgia Ann Reeves of Knoxville; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Holloway of Deep Run, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews.

MARTIN HOWARD HICKS

Funeral services for Martin Howard Hicks, 80, of Crossville, who passed away April 29, 1998, will be held , May 1, at 10 a.m. from the chapel of Burris Funeral Home, with burial in Spring City Cemetery.

He was born April 24, 1918 in Rhea County, TN, the son of Thomas A. Hicks and Alice Heird.
Mr. Hicks served in the U.S. Navy during the Pacific campaign in World War II as a navigator on the USS Denver. After the war, he returned to Tennessee and introduced the Cumberland County area to Kern's Bakery products and Galo (now Kay's) Ice Cream. The booming economy at that time allowed him to bring his brother, Garland, and son-in-law, Jimmy F. Mayfield, into the business. After 42 years, Mr. Hicks retired from Kern's. Mr. Hicks and his son-in-law purchased a grocery business in Crossville, where he was active until shortly before his death.

Mr. Hicks was active in civic and business affairs and was very interested in the growth of Crossville and Cumberland County. He served as mayor of Crossville from 1977-78, and he was a city commissioner from 1979-82.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Mayfield and Mark Loyless of Crossville; grandson, Joe Howard Mayfield and his wife, Jennifer, of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter-in-law, Chastity M. Mayfield of Crossville; sisters, Bertie Alexander and Ora Snyder, both of Spring City, TN; and several sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Coulter Galbraith; brothers, Garland Hicks, Bruce Hicks, and Glenn Hicks; and grandson, Robert Lee Mayfield.
Pallbearers will be Keith Snyder, Dean Snyder, Jim Mitchell, Bobby Hicks, Mark Bray, Jeff Sherry, Jeff Wallace and Donald Hicks.

The Rev. Vern Daugherty will officiate.

ROXIE ELIZABETH NORRIS

Funeral services for Roxie Elizabeth Norris, 83, of Rockwood, who passed away April 26, 1998 in Vanderbilt Medical Center, were held April 28 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home. Graveside services were held April 29 at Daysville Cemetery.

She was born Nov. 13, 1998 in Cumberland County, the daughter of Nepolian and Elsie Carter Kilby.
Mrs. Norris was a cook for Cumberland County school system and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her daughters, Gertie Farmer of Rainsville, AL, Hazel Norris, Corda Holloway, Martha Turner, Mary Baker, Glenda Parsons, and Linda Sherrill, all of Crossville, and Ethel Nealon of Elyria, OH; sons, Vester Norris, Carl Norris, Carson Norris, all of Crossville, and David Norris of Knoxville; 26 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Bertie Pelfrey of Crab Orchard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Baxter Norris, and son, Virgil Norris.
Pallbearers were Sammy Baker, John Kendrick, Gerald Pruett, Denton Farmer, Buddy Norris and Kevin Pruett.

Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Baker, DeWayne Farmer, Darrell Nealon, Darwin Nealon, Eugene Norris and Jason Pruett.

VIOLA MAE NUGENT

Viola Mae Nugent, 78, of Crossville, passed away April 25, 1998 in Life Care Center after a battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held April 28 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 16, 1919, the daughter of William and Mamie Hall Copelin.
Mrs. Nugent was employed by Kay's Ice Cream in Crossville for many years, and also the Dairy Queen when it was in its old location by Shadden Tire Company. Her first marriage was to Elwood Fields of Archer City, TX; they had one son. Divorced, she moved to California and married Robert Nugent and had two sons and a daughter. Mrs. Nugent came to Crossville in 1976 to live with her daughter.

Survivors include her daughter, Pamela Carr of Crossville; sons, Robert Nugent of San Bernardino, CA, and Charles Nugent of Gardena, CA; brother, Jay Copelin of Victorville, CA; seven grandchildren, Billy Carr, Melanie Stoner, Tammy Nugent, Robert Nugent, Robbin Nugent, Charlie Nugent and Joshua Nugent; eight great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Nickolas, B.J., Colby, Robert, Cheyenne, Tonto and Dakota. She was preceded in death by son, Donald Fields; sister, Hattie Pryor; and brothers, Floyd and Benny Copelin.

Pallbearers were Billy Carr, Jack Carr and Lane Stoner.

EUNICE POWELL

Funeral services for Eunice Powell, 82, of Monterey, who passed away April 29, 1998, will be held May 1 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Horner Funeral Home, with burial in Welch Memorial Cemetery.

She was born Dec. 9, 1915 in Morgan County, TN, the daughter of Estel Claude and Minerva A. Kennedy Overstreet.

Mrs. Powell was a homemaker and member of the Monterey United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Manuel E. Powell; daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Bobby Andrews; sons and daughter-in-law, Francis and Judy Powell, and Edward Powell, all of Monterey; grandchildren, Miranda Andrews, Storm and Kip Powell; great-grandchildren, Shane, Kane, Cassie and Allie Powell; sisters, Edith Ryan of Monterey, Dorene Parker of Weaver, AL, Geraldine Copeland of Nashville, Wiladine Hall of Monterey, Mattie Click of Dayton, OH, and Shirley Bowen of Crossville; and brothers, Buddy, Willard, and David Overstreet, all of Cookeville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Estel and Minerva Overstreet; and brothers, Edsel, Eugene, E.C. Jr. and Jimmy Overstreet.
