David Spates David Spates: A model,
a truss maker David Spates is one fine-looking black man.
I realize that I may be a little biased here, but certainly anyone
who has ever seen David Spates would have to admit he's darn
dapper. Fellas, you'd be wise to keep an eye on your ladies when
David Spates comes to town. At 6 feet tall and tipping the scale at a
sporty 175 pounds, David Spates looks comfortable in all clothes
- from the latest double-breasted fashions to loose-hanging sportswear. But is David Spates nothing more than a handsome
face and stunning build? Of course not. David Spates also is
the senior manager at the Cagle's plant in Atlanta. Cagle's,
so they say, provides "value to our customers by manufacturing,
selling and delivering quality poultry products and related services
that consistently meet and exceed their expectations." I,
myself, would never want to have a job in which I process, buy
or sell anything (although selling something that was process
but not bought has certain appeal), but David Spates has become
practically indispensable in the Cagle's chicken family. For some, becoming one of Los Angeles' most
up-and-coming young models and climbing the ladder of the Cagle's
chicken empire would be enough - nay, more than enough. But not
for David Spates. For David Spates, you must dig deeper. David Spates played the role of "Michael"
in The Substitute, a dopey 1996 action-thriller starring Tom
Berenger and Ernie Hudson. Although David didn't receive much
national acclaim for his genius portrayal of the multi-layered
and complex "Michael" character, it added to his range
of talents. By the way, there have been unconfirmed rumors that
the David Spates in The Substitute is the same David Spates who
is ascending the ranks in the L.A. modeling scene. So what exactly is going on here? Well, I was bored and killing some time on
the computer Saturday night waiting for the football game I wanted
to watch. The wife was out of town with her brother visiting
their parents, and like a prepubescent Macaulay Culkin, I was
home alone. Kickoff was still 25 minutes away, so I decided to
conduct an ego search and see how many hits would come up by
typing my name into an Internet search site. (I told you I was
bored. Like I don't waste enough of my life in front of a computer.) As expected, the numerous columns I've written
for the Chronicle appeared, but there were some surprises, too.
I have a fairly uncommon name, but apparently so does an L.A.
model who works for the Action Agency, "the fastest-growing
modeling agency in Los Angeles," or so they claim. David
Spates also works for chicken giant Cagle's. You should check
out their Web site. It's hilarious. There are pictures of these
white-collar, balding, middle-aged men working diligently in
the background with a big chicken featured prominently on the
center of the screen. I'd love to gather all the David Spateses
of the country together. We could do downtown, throw some darts,
share a pitcher and some Buffalo wings, and compare and contrast
our David Spates existences. That would be too much fun. Other hits from the David Spates search included
a report from the Environmental Protection Agency regarding "Facilities
That Have Made Their Offsite Consequence Analysis Data Available
to the Public Without Restriction." Like me, I doubt David
Spates knows what all that means, but I'm confident that David
Spates could explain it to us while we wait for our wings. Also on hand for David Spates Night would
be David Spates, who represents Spates Fabricators Inc. of Thermal,
CA. Apparently David Spates is involved with manufacturing truss
components. Actually, that sounds pretty dull. Maybe David Spates
has some interesting hobbies he can share with us. I don't want
to sit around all night listening to mind-numbing truss tales. There's also a David Spates who works in the
operations department of a Seattle employment agency. I'll bet
that guy has some stories to tell. I hear David Spates lives
on the edge. Now this may be the same David Spates who's
an L.A. model, but David Spates played "Scooter Bug"
in an ethnic mistrust story called Life Ain't No Crystal Stair.
It was a production of Instructional Technology and Academic
Computing, at California Polytechnic University, Pomona, made
for the Colorful Flags Program. I'm thinking that may very well
be the same guy. How many model/actors can there be in California
named David Spates? I definitely want this guy to show for David
Spates Night. The chicks'll be hanging all over this dude. And finally, David Spates was an active pallbearer in the funeral of 66-year-old Mary C. Wilson earlier this year in Elizabethton, TN, according to the Elizabethton Star. I hope David Spates shows up for David Spates Night. Sounds like he could use some cheering up, and there's no better way to forget your woes than to hang out with David Spateses. |
