Bettie R. Hinson
Sept. 22, 2003
Bettie Ruth Hinson, 71, of Panama City Beach, FL, passed away Sept. 22, 2003. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Roy McLuen officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. Hinson moved to Florida from Crossville in April of this year. She was a top notch sales manager for many retail department stores. She was a member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church and was instrumental in establishing the Daughter of the King Episcopal women's organization at St. Raphael's Episcopal Church in Crossville.
She was a wonderful wife and mother and exemplified leadership qualities.
Survivors include her husband of 11 years, Dr. Evans Hinson of Panama City Beach, FL; daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Dr. Richard Smitherman of Panama City Beach, FL; stepdaughter, Leigh Hodges of Alabaster, AL; sister, Bobbie Mazza of Navarre, FL; and grandchildren, Adam Smitherman, Evans, Stewart and Luke Hodges.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, John H. Esco.
The family requests memorial contributions to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church or to First Church of Christian Scientist.

Hershel Lane

Hershel Lane, 80, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 16, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 18 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Delmer McCowan officiated.
Mr. Lane was born June 14, 1923 in Lenoir City, TN, the son of Stokes and Tennie Hayes Lane.
He was a plant worker in Oak Ridge and of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva England Lane of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Charlotte Jones of Cookeville; grandchildren, Adam Winningham and Abby Stanford and her husband, Patrick; son-in-law, Dwight Winningham of Franklin, TN; and best friend, Roy Phillips.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lois Winningham; and sister, Agnes Lane.
Pallbearers were Robert Clarke, Chris Landers, Glen Phillips, Dwight Cunningham, Adam Winningham and Ronnie Kennedy.

Margaret Lessen
Jan. 5, 1916 - Sept. 16, 2003
Margaret Lessen, 87, of Fairfield Glade, formerly of Lincoln, IL, passed away Sept. 16, 2003. Visitation will be held Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 to 11 a.m., with funeral services to follow at 11 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln, IL.
Mrs. Lessen was born Jan. 5, 1916 in New Holland, IL.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln, IL and Christ Lutheran Church in Fairfield Glade. She was a retired secretary for Lincoln Logan Mutual Insurance Co. She loved playing cards with friends.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl D. and Don Reeser of Fairfield Glade; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Linda Lessen of Mt. Pulaski, IL; grandchildren, Brian Reeser and his wife, Candice; Todd Reeser and his wife, Diane; David Reeser and his wife, Sandy; Julie Reeser; Brent Reeser, Candice Wright; Kristin Bennett and Scott Lessen; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lessen; one grandson; and brother, Herman (Bud) Harnacke.

Jimmy Davis

Jimmy Davis, 39, of the Glade Creek community, passed away Sept. 11, 2003. Graveside funeral services were conducted Sept. 16 at Glade Creek Cemetery.
Mr. Davis was born July 27, 1964 in Crossville, the son of D.C. Davis and Phyllis Jean Lawson Wightman.
He was a factory worker with Aramark Company and was a member of the Plateau Independent Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his wife, Jessica Smith Davis of Crossville; daughter, Kayla Davis of Cookeville; son, Colby Brian Davis of Crossville; mother and stepfather, Phyllis Jean Lawson Wightman and Amos Wightman; sisters, Sharon Denton of Oak Ridge and Terri Stewart of Ocean City, NJ; and brothers, Joey Davis of Pleasant Hill and Clifford Wightman of Glade Creek, TN.
He was preceded in death by his father, D.C. Davis.

Nettie M. Dennis

Nettie Marie Steelman Ford Dennis, 87, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 28, 1915. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 20 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Haley's Grove Cemetery. Bro. Bill McNeeley officiated.
Mrs. Dennis was born Sept. 28, 1915 in Monterey, TN, the daughter of Morgan and Nancy Jane Davenport Steelman.
She was a sitter for the elderly and of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include her sons, Harlan Ford of Crossville, Ernest Ford of Pikeville, Everett Ford of Crossville and Aaron Ford of Mayland; daughters, Alaine Yingst of Iowa City, IA, Betty Welch of St. Charles, MO, Ruby Sullivan of Georgia and Jean DeRosa Conti of St. Charles, MO; 52 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Dennis and Robert Ford; daughter, Edna Rucker; son, Elvin Ford; brothers, Carl, Floyd and Lester Steelman; and sisters, Dora Mae and Mary Etta Steelman.
Pallbearers were John Ford, Jimmy Ford, Travis Ford, Ken Welch Jr., Kelly Duke, Mike DeRosa and Dion Lewis.

Norman C. Graupman

Norman Charles Graupman, 88, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 19, 2003. Services will be held at a later date.
Mr. Graupman was born Dec. 24, 1914 in Hilton, NY, the son of Charles and Minnie Kagel Graupman.
He was a general foreman for Eastman Kodak and of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Bartels Graupman of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy D. and John M. Halwig of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Cortney Elizabeth Halwig and John Christopher Halwig, both of Atlanta, GA; stepsons, Robert Frost of Charlotte, NC and Stephen Frost of Groveland, NY; seven step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Marie Callemyn Graupman; son, Ronald Charles Graupman; brothers, Herbert, Walter and Arthur Graupman; and sisters, Lida Casey and Edie Graupman.

Beatrice Ann Monahan, 71, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Sept. 12, 2003. Memorial services were conducted Sept. 17 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Fairfield Glade.
Mrs. Monahan was born in East Lansing, MI, the daughter of Darrell and Helen LaDue Hendrickson.
She was a homemaker and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Fairfield Glade. She was a member of Eastern Star and the Embroidery Guild.
Survivors include her sons daughters-in-law, Kevin and Noreen Monahan of Franklin, TN and Craig and Debbi Monahan of Saginaw, MI; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Lewie Bates of Huntsville, AL; and six grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Monahan.

Sue Tims Johnson, 59, of Spring City, passed away Sept. 15, 2003. Services will be private.
Survivors include her husband, Don F. Johnson Sr.; son and daughter-in-law, Don and Shari Johnson Jr. of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, and Vicki and Regie Madewell of Spring City; sisters, Debbie Layne of Chattanooga, Nina Reynolds of Chattanooga and Jean Allgood of Alabama; grandchildren, Amber Johnson, Curt Madewell and Casey Walker; and great-grandsons, Hunter and Hayden Madewell.

Samuel F. Scarlett
July 7, 1978 - Sept. 9, 2003
Samuel Fred Scarlett, 25, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 9, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 13 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Haley's Grove Cemetery. Bro. Ralph Reagan officiated.
Samuel was born July 7, 1978 in Cumberland County, the son of Gary Almonrode and Mary Scarlett.
He was a painter and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Scarlett of Spencer, TN; father, Gary Almonrode of Crossville; daughter, Angelina Michelle McNeal of Crossville; sisters, Heather Easterly and Marie Waldrop, both of Crossville; brother, Ruben Scarlett of Knoxville; and uncles and aunts, Jim and Helen Lewis, Clarence Scarlett, Fred Scarlett, Ruby and Randell Bilbrey.
Pallbearers were Gary Almonrode, David Almonrode, Michael Almonrode, Matt Owens, Jimmy Lewis and John Choate.

A.T. Smith
June 4, 1907 - Aug. 30, 2003
A.T. Smith, 96, of Alto, GA, passed away Aug. 30, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 3 at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, with burial at Yonah Memorial Gardens in Demorest, GA.
Mr. Smith was born June 4, 1907 in Pickett County, TN, the son of Walter Plato and Alberta Chilton Smith.
He was a graduate of the Chicago Art Institute and was a commercial artist. Among his clients were the Coca-Cola Co. and Lockheed Corporation. During World War II, he worked for the Tennessee Eastman Corporation on its Clinton Engineer Works Project, assisting on the production of the first atomic bomb. He was a member of the Banks County, GA Chamber of Commerce and the Banks County, GA Historical Society.
As a teenager, Mr. Smith painted the policeman that says, "Park your car here," on the J.A. Kemmer Building on Main Street.
Upon retirement from a long career as a commercial artist, he became prominent for his paintings of North Georgia historical landmarks. His paintings hang in Banks, Libraries and Colleges of North Georgia.
Survivors include his wife, Nina Griffin Smith of Alto, GA; daughter, Anita Cleveland of Alto, GA; sons, Thurston Smith of West Columbia, TX and Wayne Smith of Tucker, GA; sister, Lena Byers of Dayton, OH; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He has many relatives in Crossville as well.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Eston Smith and Clayton Smith of Crossville; sisters, Geneva Griswald of Daytona Beach, FL and Leiron Southerland of Chattanooga; and grandson, Ben Kimbrell of Milledgeville, GA.

Louie Turner
Aug. 18, 1944 - Sept. 4, 2003
Louie Turner, 59, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 4, 2003. His cremains will be buried in Linder Cemetery.
Mr. Turner was born Aug. 18, 1944 in Fentress County, the son of Willard and Ester Simpson Turner.
He was a laborer and of the Protestant faith. He served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam.
Survivors include his son, Bryan Lee Turner of West Virginia; daughter, Melinda Ann Turner of West Virginia; two grandchildren; brothers, Eugene Turner of Greenfield, IN, Cecil Turner of Crossville and Tolly Turner of Cadiz, KY.

Getha Bowman
Nov. 21, 1918 - Sept. 14, 2003
Getha (Tinsley) Bowman passed away Sept. 14, 2003. Memorial services were conducted Sept. 16 at the Christ Church United Methodist in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, with interment in Marion, IN.
Mrs. Bowman was born Nov. 21, 1918 in Crossville.
She graduated from Berea College, Berea, KY in 1942. Following her move to Florida in 1944, she did further study at FSU as well as Rollins College and Florida Southern, earning as Master's of Education degree at FSU in 1966 and a degree in Guidance Counseling in 1970. She was employed in Lake County as a teacher from 1945 to 1960. She moved to Broward County in 1962 and taught at Pine Ridge Elementary until 1970 when she became a guidance counselor for Wilton Manors School until her retirement in 1978. She was a member of Christ Church United Methodist where she belonged to Open Door Fellowship Class, Dorcas Circle, Sewing for Cancer Group, Friends Always Are and Globe Trotters. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 117 in Clermont, FL, Florida Retired Educator Association and AARP both in Florida and North Carolina.
Survivors include her sons, James B. Tinsley of Deland, FL and Gregory Tinsley of Hollywood, FL; daughters, Billie Bowman of Anderson, IN, Bonnie Bowman of Salt Lake City, UT and Barbara Bowman-Johnson of Anderson, IN; sisters, Mary Szeuczuk of Cumberland, RI and Myra Barnes of Astatula, FL; brother, Fred Loshbough of Crossville; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Bowman.

Nota T. Green of Somerset, KY, passed away Sept. 15, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at Somerset Undertaking Co. in Somerset, KY, with burial in Somerset Cemetery. Calling hours will begin at 10 a.m., Sept. 18. The Rev. John Cole and the Rev. Jack Wilhelm will officiate.
Mrs. Green was born in Crossville, the daughter of Ruth McNeil Price and Homer M. Price.
She was a retired buyer for Deaver Dry Goods of Knoxville. She was a graduate of Knoxville Business College, a member of the Somerset Christian Woman's Club, a supporter of the Save the Neighborhood group and a member of the Maude Parker Circle at the Presbyterian Church. She was an avid flower gardener and loved to nurture turtles.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Patton "Pat" and Delane Green of Somerset, KY; daughters, Linda Green Morgan of Lexington, KY and Luann Green of Somerset, KY; brother, Lawton Price of Crossville; sisters, Gladys Price Loveday Brown, Leta Price Goss and Lois Thurman, all of Crossville; grandchildren, Nadia Green, Amos Green, Logan Green and John Hannon and Allyson Rakestraw; and great-grandchild, Olivia Hannon Rakestraw.

Clyde S. McCammon Sr.

Clyde Samuel McCammon Sr., 90, of Davidson County, TN, formerly of Fairfield Glade, passed away Sept. 13, 2003. Family will receive friends 3-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 at Bilbrey Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. (EST), Saturday, Sept. 20, at Sherwood Memorial Gardens in Alcoa, TN, with the Rev. Dale Marshall officiating.
Mr. McCammon was born May 19, 1913 in Maryville, TN, the son of Cowan and Bonnie Dennis McCammon.
He was an auditor for the IRS and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his son, Sam McCammon Jr. of Ashland City, TN; daughters, Charlotte Farrar of Nashville and Deborah Baldino of Jacksonville, FL; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Russell McCammon; and sister, Ethel Renfro.

Ethel Dora Neely (n'ee Burgess), of Columbia Station, OH, formerly of Cumberland County, passed away Sept. 13, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Burgess Town Cemetery. Brother Joey Campbell will officiate.
Mrs. Neely was born Aug. 25, 1914 in Cumberland County, TN, the daughter of Lem Burgess and Gurtie Sherrill.
She was a head cook with Ford Motor Co., Brook Park, OH.
Survivors include her children, Dick (Betty) Wilson, Emma Legge, Janet (Doug) Leonard and Lorraine Tichenor; grandchildren, Bonnie Gann, Rick (Kathie) Wilson, Simon (Carol) Tucker, Pamela (James) Smith, Dale Wilson and Donna Boytek; great-grandchildren, Doug and Jimmy Sells, Whitney, Ashley and Kelsey Wilson, Brian, Clinton and Dustin Tucker, Ross Marquette, Brandi and Stevi Sengpiel, Sabrina Mack, Joshua Abbott and Vanessa Curry; and great-great-grandchildren, Laci, Taylor, Jocelyn, Desiree and Oliver Sells, Foster, Logan and Ethan Tucker, Justin and Bralyn Abbott, China, Justin and Macala Woollum.

Julius E. Norris
Sept. 15, 1938 - Sept. 9, 2003
Julius Edward (J.E.) Norris, 64, of Lebanon, passed away Sept. 9, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 12 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Baker's Chapel Cemetery. Bros. Thomas Hale and Eddie Kilgore officiated, with special music by Janice Norris and John Pugh. The Veterans Honor Guard of Monterey, TN, provided the military honors of presentation of the flag, firing detail and "Taps" at the grave site.
Mr. Norris was born Sept. 15, 1938 in Cumberland County, TN, the son of Julius and Eria Gertrude (Gertie) Ball Norris.
He had been employed at Franklin Limestone Co. and was a member of Stanley Street Church of God of Prophecy. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a gospel singer with his two friend and his sister. He was devoted to his church, his wife and only son. He was the epitome of a good-hearted, gentle man and will be missed by all. He is truly an angel of God.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Virginia Whited Norris of Crossville; son, Jonathan Mark Norris of Gallatin, TN; grandson, Max Corbin Norris and his mother, Julie Whitaker of Gallatin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom and Janice Norris of Crab Orchard and Roger and Judy Norris of Gatlinburg; sister and brother-in-law, Faye and Hubert Blaylock of Crossville; eight nieces and five nephews; a very special niece, Angela Marie "Champ" Norris of Swinefert, Germany; and lifelong friend, Paul Henry of South Shore, KY.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Gertie Norris.
Pallbearers were John Hyder, Paul Henry, Larry Cottrell, Kevin Wagoner, Caleb Norris and Sam Crye.

James Tilden Ramey, 64, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 13, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 15 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Joey Whittenburg officiated.
Mr. Ramey was born May 31, 1939 in Pike County, KY, the son of Teddy Roosevelt Ramey Sr. and Gypsy Chaney Ramey.
He was a carpenter and a member of the Lawrence Chapel Church of God of Prophecy. He also served in the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Dale Short of Dearborn Heights, MI and Tammie and James Goodwin of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law, James and Julie Ramey of Crossville; nine grandchildren; brothers, Ted Ramey, John Ramey and Jesse Ramey, all of Crossville; and sisters, Lillian Goodwin of Ohio, Gay Wells of Oklahoma and Jeanette Hudson of Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by two wives, Dianna Sue Robinson and Francis England; brother, William Ramey; and sister, Geneva Padgett.
Pallbearers were Dale Short, James Goodwin, Josh Pugh, Sonny Ramey, George Robinson and Ronnie Tipton.

Donald W. Walsh

Donald Wayne Walsh, 67, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 10, 2003. A memorial service was held Sept. 16.
Mr. Walsh was born Jan. 30, 1936 in Scottdale, PA; the son of Alfred and Freda Walsh.
He was a retired machinist.
Survivors include his sisters, Gladys Beaken of Smithdale, PA, Beverly Martinez of San Antonio, TX, Sara Campbell of Vanderbilt, PA, Bonnie DeCroix of Monongahela, PA, Vivian Baughman of Irwin, PA and Judy Knopsnider of Derry, PA; and brothers, Richard Walsh of Albuquerque, NM and Alfred L. Walsh Jr. of Modesto, CA.

Ruby Ellen Cave, 71, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 10, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 13 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Henry Cemetery. Billy Smith officiated.
Mrs. Cave was born Oct. 17, 1931 in Crossville, the daughter of the late William and Cora Barnwell.
Survivors include her husband, Dencal Ray Cave; sons, Dale Work of Crossville and Allen Ray Cave of Dallas, TX; daughters, Leslie Gui of Smyrna, Kelly Hatfield and Debbie Davis; brothers, Willis and Daryl Barnwell of Nashville; sister, Shirley Kimbro of Chattanooga; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Joshua was born Jan. 9, 1983, the son of John Mark and Annette Hall.
Survivors include his parents and sister, Whitney Hall, all of the Mayland community; grandparents, Bill and Nancy Hall of Mayland and Tony and Fran Durham of the Dripping Springs community; and great-grandmother, Minnie Lavender of Chestnut Ridge.

Mr. Lawson was born April 15, 1918, in Pikeville, TN, the son of Gaither and Mary Hortense Angel Lawson.
He was a factory worker and of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Aytes was the son of the late Amos and Libby Aytes.
He enjoyed prayer meetings with members of the Frankfort Community Church. He took the Lord into his heart on Jan. 11, 2003 and was forever God's child. He was an avid gin-sang hunter for many years and loved driving around on the Catoosa Wildlife Management Area. He was retired from the courthouse in Wartburg.

Mr. Bristow was born July 7, 1919 in Cumberland County, TN, the son of William Floyd and Rhoda Knox Bristow.
He was a retired warehouse worker for Malone & Hyde and an Army veteran, having served our country during World War II. He was married to Trophy Spurlin Bristow for 56 years and was a Baptist minister for more than 50 years. He was a member of Creston Baptist Church and loved teaching the Bible in Sunday school.

She was employed with the Upjohn Company before moving to the Nashville area in 1993. She moved to Fairfield Glade in 1999 with her husband, Phillip, and was employed by Hospice of Cumberland County.

Mr. Landrem was born July 22, 1932 in Greenway, AR, the son of Jim and Thelma Davis Landrem.
Mrs. Landrem was born Dec. 14, 1934 in McCracken County, KY, the daughter of William and Evelyn Russell Cardwell.
He was a retired bank officer and she was a homemaker. Mr. Landrem served our country in the United States Army and they both loved their grandchildren very much.

Robert Douglas Dyer, 59, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 2, 2003. He was a former employee for 39 years with Crossville Rubber. He was also an active member of Wine Sap Freewill Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a good friend and comfort to all who knew him. He will be sadly missed by all.

Deceased siblings include Neal Dyer, Norman Dyer and Harold Dyer. Mr. Dyer also has a surviving aunt, Bealuh Rogers of Chattanooga, TN whom he loved dearly and was very fond of.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Loren J. Hawn and Earl M. Hawn; son, James K. Hawn; great-granddaughter, Teresa Lewis; brothers, Hubert, Alva and Virgil Potter; and sisters, Gracie McCormick and Agnes Hamby.
Schubert Funeral Home in Wartburg, TN was in charge of the arrangements.

Esther M. Ledford

Esther Marie Ledford, 93, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 31, 2003. Graveside services were conducted Sept. 2 at Haley's Grove Cemetery in Crab Orchard. George Long officiated.
Mrs. Ledford was born April 30, 1910, in Crab Orchard, the daughter of Andrew and Arva Howard.
She was a homemaker and an active member of the First Christian Church.
Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Linda Ledford and Jere Fox of Crossville and Earlene Ledford Ashburn of Oak Ridge; son, Joe R. Ledford of Temple, GA; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, A.R. "Ott" Ledford; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.
