She was born Nov. 20, 1938, in Claiborne County, TN, the daughter of Lawrence and Myrtie Neely Carey. She and her husband, Leo, own and operate Caryonah Hunting Lodge.
Mrs. Garrison was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed so many things in life, including sports, travel, hunting, riding her four-wheeler and just being outdoors. She also loved to cook, shop and decorate her home. One of the greatest loves in her life was her grandchildren and her family.
She is survived by her husband, Leo Garrison, of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law Patrick and Heather Garrison of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law Bobbie Jo Garrison Herman and Kelly Herman of Crossville; grandaughter Bethany Anna Garrison; half-brother Claude Goins of Michigan; and godchildren Matt, Sarah and Mary Atkinson.
"We would like to thank you for coming to pay your respects to our mother. We know that Momma would want us to be glad that she has gone home. She has made our house home to many people. We know she would not want us to dwell on her being gone, but rather think about all the good times that were had with all her family and friends. Everyone in the community that Momma has touched knows the love that she carried with her and that warm, loving feeling she instilled in everyone. Even the nurses at the hospital said they didn't want her to leave because she made it feel like a home. Not only people close to home, but also people all over the world have come to Caryonah to experience that feeling of being "mothered" by our mom. She took everyone in and made him or her feel special. No one ever left hungry. That was most important to her. She would always find the good in everyone. No matter how hard that could be.
"Children were the love of her life. Not only us, but all children, from her godchildren to her grandchildren. Never to be forgotten was her first born, Chris. She never let anyone forget about him and now she is with him. Her first grandchild, Bethany Anna, was loved like no other. Momma was there every step of the way, and even had two to three years of clothes bought before she was born. She wasn't spoiled, though. Momma's already touched Patrick and Heather's second child with that special 'Nanny' love, and she is not even here yet.
"Momma is probably the strongest individual that any of us have ever come in contact with. Her pride, wellbeing, goodness and greatness were passed on to everyone. Respect, the driving force of this strength, was instilled in all of us by always saying 'yes, sir,' and 'yes, ma'am,' opening the door for people and respecting elders. This personality also spilled over to her business. She represented everything in a great leader. Simply stated, she didn't demand respect, she earned it, leading by her examples.
"She was always with us kids, no matter what it was: beauty pageants, car races, ball games and horse shows. What a well-rounded individual she was, a woman that could cook biscuits and gravy or chicken 'n dumplings, then jump in a race car and take the checkered flag. These types of qualities are what allowed her to make all of our dreams come true. No matter what we could dream up, she was all for it, from parasailing in Aruba to bear hunting with Bobbie Jo.
"Momma loved us dearly, and loved our dad very much. Nearly 50 years of marriage says a lot these days. She loved our spouses, Heather and Kelly, just as much as us kids, and treated them like her own. We love her dearly and will always live by the examples she taught us. Never to be forgotten, but always to be remembered as 'the greatest mom ever.' We love you double everything you say. As Bethany would say, 'God bless you, Nanny.'"
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Christopher Carey Garrison, and brother Kenneth Carey.
Pallbearers were Doug Atkinson, Matt Atkinson, Richard Cardwell, Mark Read, Johnny Wayne Presley, William Wilson, Brett Carey and Bryce Care.
