Nettie Marie Steelman Ford Dennis, 87, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 17, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 20 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Haley's Grove Cemetery. Bro. Bill McNeeley officiated.
Mrs. Dennis was born Sept. 28, 1915 in Monterey, TN, the daughter of Morgan and Nancy Jane Davenport Steelman.
She was a sitter for the elderly and of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include her sons, Harlan Ford of Crossville, Ernest Ford of Pikeville, Everett Ford of Crossville and Aaron Ford of Mayland; daughters, Alaine Yingst of Iowa City, IA, Betty Welch of St. Charles, MO, Ruby Sullivan of Georgia and Jean DeRosa Conti of St. Charles, MO; 52 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Dennis and Robert Ford; daughter, Edna Rucker; son, Elvin Ford; brothers, Carl, Floyd and Lester Steelman; and sisters, Dora Mae and Mary Edna Steelman.
Pallbearers were John Ford, Jimmy Ford, Travis Ford, Ken Welch Jr., Kelly Duke, Mike DeRosa and Dion Lewis.

Floyd L. Hooks
April 30, 1926 - Sept. 23, 2003

Floyd Lester Hooks, 77, of Fairfield Glade, formerly of Owensboro, KY, passed away Sept. 23, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 24 at Central Baptist Church, with Bro. Roland Smith officiating. Burial took place Sept. 26 in Owensboro Memorial Gardens in Owensboro, KY.
Mr. Hooks was born April 30, 1926 in Peducah, KY, the son of Floyd Lester Sr. and Ileen Jones Hooks.
He was a retired school teacher, a member of Central Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran having served our country during World War II. He served as deacon and Sunday school teacher for more than 40 years during his life. He taught school in the Davis County School System in Owensboro, KY for more than 31 years, having been named "Outstanding Teacher" at Davis County High School three different times. He also helped organize the football program at Davis County High School. He loved to read, fish, garden and play golf.
Survivors include his wife, Vandalyn Hooks of Fairfield Glade; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Rene Hooks of Owensboro, KY and Steve and India Hooks of Bowling Green, KY; sister, Hilda Hanson of Flemington, NJ; grandchildren, Laura Hooks, Patrick Hooks, Braxton Hooks and Lesley Hooks; 10 nephews; three nieces; and special relatives, Roy Hansen of Flemington, NJ and Jim and Roseann Lawrence of Silver Spring, MD.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Faye Claiborne and Portia Lynch; and grandson, Charlie (Chad) Hooks.

Wilma Howard, 64, of the Chestnut Ridge community, passed away Sept. 29, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 1 at Schubert Funeral Home in Wartburg, TN. Bro. Archie Lavender officiated. Graveside services will be held Thursday, Oct. 2 at 11 a.m.
Mrs. Howard was of the Baptist faith. She was owner/operator of Howard's Grocery in the Chestnut Ridge community for many years.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Harold Howard of Chestnut Ridge; son and daughter-in-law, Jackie and Edwina Howard of Crossville; daughter, Melissa Howard of Beverly, NJ; grandchildren, Shawna, Andrew and Brittany Howard; brothers, Ronald Smith of Lancing, Arnold Smith of Indiana and Clayton Smith of Chestnut Ridge; and sister, Fern Logan of Chestnut Ridge.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Mabel Hall Smith; and brother, Homer Smith.

Elinor Knobloch, 77, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Sept. 23, 2003. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 at Christ Lutheran Church in Fairfield Glade, with interment in the Christ Lutheran Church Columbarium. Joseph Nilsen will officiate.
Mrs. Knobloch was born Jan. 28, 1926 in Wakefield, NE.
A member of Christ Lutheran Church, she was a church musician and associate minister of the Lutheran Church for 55 years after graduating from Concordia University in River Grove, IL with a master's degree in Music. She retired in 1996 and moved to Fairfield Glade from Chicago, IL.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Lowell Knobloch; sons, Barry Knobloch of St. Petersburg, FL and Bruce Knobloch of Harriman, TN; daughter, Lori Stirr of Hampton, VA; sister, Marjorie Cail of Banning, CA; and five grandchildren.

May 18, 1936 - Oct. 1, 2003

R.D. Abston, 67, of Mayland, passed away Oct. 1, 2003. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with interment to follow in the Mayland Cemetery. The Rev. Greg Williams will officiate.
Mr. Abston was born May 18, 1936 in Wilder, TN to the late Lon and Edith Lacy Abston.
He was retired from Ontiro Corp. in Muncie, IN after 26 years of service.
Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Sandra and Wayne Stacy of Muncie, IN and Janet Cook of Hartford City, IN; sons, Ronnie and Kathy Abston of Crossville; Bobby Abston and his companion, Janell Cooper of Mayland and Jacky Abston and his companion, Lisa Brown of Muncie, IN; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Nellie and Estes Mahaney of Mayland, Emma and Jr. Robbins of Mayland and Betty and George Smith of Wilder, TN; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Willie (Cotton) and Zona Abston of Wilder, TN, George and Betty Abston of Mayland, Marvin Abston of Mayland and Arnold Abston of Mayland.

William T. B. Williams III
Jan. 12, 1931 - Sept. 22, 2003

William (Bill) Thomas Berry Williams III, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 22, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 24 at First Presbyterian Church, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. The Rev. Glenn Jakes officiated, with special music by Diedre Davis and Alice Hopper.
Mr. Williams was born Jan. 12, 1931 in Winchester, KY, the son of William T. B. Williams II and Elizabeth Drake Williams.
He was an engineer for E.E. Warner Robows and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Kessel Williams of Crossville; sons, Mark Williams of Lexington, KY, James Williams of Macon, GA and Daniel Williams of Knoxville; daughter, Theresa Kyle of Naples, FL; five grandchildren; and brothers, George Drake Williams of Columbia, SC and Robert Hamilton Williams of Frederick, MD.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elizabeth Williams II.

Leo C. Brewer
June 5, 1919 - Oct. 2, 2003

Leo Cordell Brewer passed away Oct. 2, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 4 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, with burial in Davis Cemetery. Bro. Mike Kerley officiated.
Mr. Brewer was born June 5, 1919 in Crossville. Raised in Crossville, he later moved to Chattanooga where he owned and operated his custom cabinet shop. He moved back to Crossville, opened a cabinet shop and later retired. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret N. Brewer of Crossville; daughters, Patricia Flippo of Soddy-Daisy, Vickie Christopher, Linda Cox and Debbie Trevena, all of Crossville; sons, David C. Brewer and Charles T. Brewer of Crossville and Daniel C. Brewer of Chattanooga; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles T. and Georgia Hale Brewer; daughter, Delta Louise Howard; son, Ricky Lee Brewer; brothers, Frank, Emerson and Otto Brewer; and sisters, Maude B. Biddle, Grace Flynn, Myrtle Brewer, Minnie Smith and Hattie Lewis.

Patricia Louise Eickstaedt, 74, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 29, 2003. Memorial services were conducted Oct. 2 at Pomona Full Gospel Church, with Bro. Elmer Graham officiating and special music by Linda Graham.
Mrs. Eickstaedt was born June 11, 1929 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Thomas A. Johnson Sr. and Mary Josephine Arnold Johnson.
She was a homemaker and a member of Pomona Full Gospel Church.
Survivors include her son, Charles Thomas Wagner Sr. of Chicago, IL; daughter, Jackie Laesch of Crossville; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Ruthie B. Hassler
Sept. 8, 1928 - Oct. 1, 2003

Ruthie Belle Hassler, 75, of Crossville, passed away Oct. 1, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 4 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Linary Cemetery. Phil Jenkins officiated, with music by the Church of Christ Singers.
Mrs. Hassler was born Sept. 8, 1928 in Cumberland County, the daughter of Jessie and Stella Sullivan.
She was a homemaker and a member of Crossville Church of Christ.
Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Brewer; sons and daughter-in-law, Mike Hassler and Steve and Barbara Hassler; granddaughter, Rebecca Hassler; and grandson, Jeremy Hassler.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Hassler; brother, Casto Sullivan; sister, Velma Sullivan; and grandson, John Cordell Brewer.

Julius E. Norris
Sept. 15, 1938 - Sept. 9, 2003

Julius Edward "J.E." Norris, veteran of the U.S. Army, born Sept. 15, 1938, passed away Sept. 9, 2003 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville at the age of 64.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Eria Gertrude "Gertie" Norris.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Virginia Whited Norris of Crossville; son, Jonathan Mark Norris of Gallatin, TN; grandson, Max Corbin Norris, and his mother, Julie Whitaker, of Gallatin; lifelong friend, Paul Henry of South Shore, KY; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom and Janice Norris of Crab Orchard and Roger and Judy Norris of Gatlinburg; sister and brother-in-law, Faye and Hubert Blaylock of Crossville; eight nieces; five nephews; and one very special niece, Angela Marie "Champ" Norris of Swinefert, Germany.
Church membership was held at the Stanley Street Church of God of Prophecy. J.E. was a gospel singer with two friends and his sister. He was devoted to his church, his wife and only son. He was the epitome of a good hearted, gentle man and will be missed by all. He is truly an angel of God.

Betty R. Seay
Oct. 26, 1926 - Oct. 2, 2003

Betty Ruth Seay, 76, of Crossville, passed away Oct. 2, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 5 from the chapel of Horner Funeral Home, with interment in Welch Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Nolan Brunson officiated.
Mrs. Seay was born Oct. 26, 1926 in Pleasant Hill, the daughter of the late Hubert and Roxie Suttle Milligan.
She worked a number of years as a bookkeeper with hospitals, worked in security at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville and was a former co-owner of Monterey Flower Shop.
Survivors include her husband of over 34 years, J.D. "Hook" Seay, whom she married June 7, 1969 in Holt, MI; stepsons, Mike Seay and Johnny Seay, both of Bartow, FL; stepdaughters, Carol Royer of Crossville and Kathy (James) Finley of Bartow, FL; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Doris Milligan of Monterey; nephews, Keelan Milligan of Monterey and Lloyd Milligan of Murfreesboro; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Tom Mitchell, David Seay, James Finley, Carl Sutton, Gene Peters and Keelan and Lloyd Milligan.

Dorothy L. Sherrill
Oct. 3, 2003

Dorothy Louise Sherrill, 90, of Spring City, passed away Oct. 3, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 6 from the chapel of Evans Mortuary, with graveside services and interment following at Dogwood Cemetery in the Dogwood community of Cumberland County. Pastor Timothy Wilson officiated.
Mrs. Sherrill was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church in Rockwood. She lived most of her life in the Ozone community. She retired from Young Packing Company, Noblesville, IN, after 17 years of service. Following her retirement, she returned to her home in Ozone. For the past two years, she has resided with her daughter in Spring City.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence Fred and Pauline Sherrill of Noblesville, IN, James A. Sherrill and Charles Crave and Kris Sherrill of Ringgold, GA; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lou and Don Green of Spring City, Yvonne Marie and Walter Norman of Jasper, Patricia Dean and Garo Swicegood of Crossville and Elizabeth Ann and Tom Couse of Spring City; 24 beloved grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred H. Sherrill; sons, Carl Glen Sherrill and Kenneth Vaughn Sherrill; daughter, Pamela Dawn Sherrill; parents, Charlie and Lou Ella Hayes Abston; and several brothers and sisters.

Billie J. Steadman
Feb. 2, 1930 - Aug. 19, 2003

Billie Joan Steadman, 73, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Aug. 19, 2003. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Fairfield Glade Methodist Church, with burial in Fairfield Glade Methodist Memorial Garden. May Mayo and Lanita Pride will officiate. The music will be "In the Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset," sung by Kathy Gilray.
Mrs. Steadman was born Feb. 2, 1930 in Salem, OH.
She was a homemaker and a member of Fairfield Glade Methodist. She was a member of Ladies of the Elks.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Steadman; daughter, Lynn Sartori of Canton, MI; sons, Keith Steadman of Royal Oak, MI and Brian Steadman of West Trenton, NJ; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and six nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Gertrude Groven, Grace Fridwall and Tamar Nichols.

Pauline A. Thompson
Oct. 3, 2003

Pauline Avillee Thompson, 92, passed away Oct. 3, 2003 in Forsyth, GA. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 5 from the chapel of Pikeville Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens in Crossville. Bro. Jim Whittaker officiated.
Mrs. Thompson was a native of Bledsoe County and was the daughter of the late Major C. and Amanda Swafford Tollett. She later resided in Crossville. She was a member of the Homestead United Methodist Church. She retired from Hatler Florist in Crossville.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, James and Linda Thompson and Edward Thompson; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Thomas Maxwell; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Frank Thompson.

Steven D. D'Orlando
Dec. 26, 1954 - Oct. 5, 2003

Steven D'Orlando, 48, of Crossville, passed away Oct. 5, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 8 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fairfield Glade. Father Greg Neuzil officiated.
Mr. D'Orlando was born Dec. 26, 1954 in Fall River, MA, the son of Doris D'Orlando and Samuel Wexler.
He was known to many as Master Dee, as he was the owner of Dee's Tae Kwon Do in Crossville and had a 4th degree blackbelt. He was the Tennessee state champion coach for many years. He was also the owner of Shades of Green Lawn Care and Landscape Design in Crossville. He was a member of the United States Air Force from 1974 to 1976.
He was an amazing husband, father, son and grandfather. He loved his family with all of his heart and soul and did anything and everything to take care of his family. He was both a friend and mentor to all he came into contact with.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Kathleen D'Orlando; daughters, Tara Ann D'Orlando, Heather Lynn D'Orlando and Kerri Ann Lowery; son, Steven Michael D'Orlando; son-in-law, Kenneth Lowery; grandsons, Justin Patrick D'Orlando and Braeden Michael Lowery, all of Crossville; mother- and father-in-law, Virginia and John Calfa of Crossville; mother, Doris D'Orlando and father, Samuel Wexler, both of Newport, RI; sisters, Patricia Ouellette of Beverly Hills, FL and Lorraine Tabor of Newport, RI; and brother, Lee D'Orlando of Los Angeles, CA.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Lowery, Nicholas Orr, James Hodge II and David Schlacter.

George M. Griffith, 71, of Orlando, FL, formerly of Crossville, passed away Oct. 1, 2003. Funeral services were conducted at Eastland Baptist Church in Orlando, FL, with burial in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Orlando with full military honors.
Mr. Griffith was born Feb. 3, 1932 in Morgan County, TN, the son of George W. and Mary Louverna Nelson Griffith.
He was retired from the United States Air Force and the United Postal Service. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia J. Griffith of Orlando, FL; brother, James A. Griffith of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, Sheree and Ray Guzman of Orlando; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas E. and Suzann Griffith, George R. and Sharon Griffith of Crossville, Larry J. and Sandy Griffith and Ted M. Griffith of Orlando; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Larry A. Griffith and Earl I. Franklin.
He was a deacon and treasurer of Eastland Baptist Church in Orlando, FL.
He was a living example of a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Elbert L. Stone

Elbert Lee Stone, 71, of Crossville, passed away Oct. 6, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 8 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Davis Cemetery. Bro. J.T. Davis officiated.
Mr. Stone was born June 7, 1932 in Cumberland County, the son of Virgil Lee and Mary Elizabeth Burgess Stone.
He was a laborer and an Army veteran, having served our country during the Korean conflict.

Willard R. Threet

Willard Roosevelt Threet, 70, of Crossville, passed away Oct. 4, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 7 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Pomona Cemetery. Bro. Elmer Graham and Bro. Bill Smith officiated.
Mr. Threet was born Dec. 5, 1932 in Fentress County, TN, the son of Alfrey and Doshie Singleton Threet.
He was a laborer and loved to fish. He was extremely talented and creative at making fishing tackle and equipment. He spent the majority of his life doing things associated with fishing or building fishing lures or rods. He is best known as a good fisherman. Roosevelt was the last surviving of seven children. He worked for a short time in the early 1950s in Tennessee Stone. He worked at Cumberland Medical Center for 27 years, a short time for First National Bank and then Timberline Lodge until he retired.
Survivors include his sons, Donald Threet, Roger Threet, Ronald Threet and Charlie Threet; daughters, Carol Simmons, Patricia Olson and Shirley Duvall; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and special friend, Lorine Barnwell, all of Crossville.

Marian Frances Darby, 70, of Crossville, formerly of Constantia, NY, passed away Sept. 29, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 4 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fairfield Glade, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery.
Mrs. Darby was born Aug. 24, 1933 in East Worcester, NY, the daughter of Floyd and Gertrude Schwab Ridge.
She was a senior compositor with General Electric for 37 years, a member of the Auxiliary Fire Department in Constantia, NY and a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. She loved traveling and had traveled to all but five of the U.S. states with Outer Banks, NC being a favorite place. She loved country living, knitting and crafts and was dearly devoted to her husband and family.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Darby Sr. of Crossville; son, Richard Muckey of Central Square, NY; stepson, Raymond Darby Jr. of Constantia, NY; daughters, Tamara Owens of Liverpool, NY, Sheila Muckey of North Syracuse, NY and Collen Janack of Brewerton, NY; stepdaughters, Penny Parker of Pace, FL, Lori Tate of Windsor, MO and Eda Boyea of Constantia, NY; 20 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

From his children: "There wasn't a new car waiting for each of us on graduation day, nor could Daddy afford a college education for us either. We never wore the best of clothes or drove the nicest car. But what we did have was a Daddy who loved the Lord. And what he gave to each of us was the very key to life itself. Daddy told us about Jesus.
"He told us of a Savior who loved us and provided us with the precious plan of salvation. Through Daddy's teaching and preaching we all have accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Savior and many others have come to know Jesus because of his preaching of his preaching as well.
"Daddy couldn't save us, but he pointed us to the one who could. Daddy gave us Jesus. We are honored to be Tony Durham's children. We are honored to bear his name. Although Daddy provided us with a home filled with love and happiness, the most wonderful thing he provided was the knowledge of Jesus.

Mrs. Harrison was born May 10, 1925 in Topeka, KS, the daughter of William Dean Brunton and Jeannette Ruby.
She worked as an underwriter for Guarantee Title Co. for 20 years in Kansas City, KS. She retired in 1992 to Warsaw, MO. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Warsaw.
She was known for her love of family and games. She always had time to play with her children and grandchildren. She was an excellent cook, gardener and housekeeper. She had an abundant sense of humor and was loved immensely by all of her family.
Survivors include her son, Jerry Shaw and Claudia of Florham Park, NJ; stepsons, Warren Harrison and Dr. Lou MacManus of Pikeville, Richard Harrison of Denver, CO and Mark and Terri Harrison of Pensacola, FL; beloved grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Deanne and Scott, Tammy and Jim, Matthew, Stephen, Susan, Genelle, Jason, Amber, Ethan and Samantha; great-grandchildren, Bailey, Alex and Phoebe; sister, Beverly Black and Merle of Lawrence, KS; and brothers, Don Brunton and Lois of Albuquerque, NM and Robert Brunton and Betty of Bella Vista, AR.

Mr. Lohr was born Feb. 23, 1936 in New Cumberland, WV, the son of David and Ruth Robb Lohr.
He was a lock master with the Army Corps of Engineers and a United States Marine veteran, having served his country during Korea. He attended Cumberland Fellowship Baptist and worked at Leisure Kraft Pontoon Boats in Crossville. He dearly loved his family and enjoyed time spent with his dogs.

Mr. Rutherford was born May 31, 1940 in War, WV, the son of Harvey and Daisy Coleman Rutherford.
He had worked at General Motors and was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing golf and loved to trade and collect cars. He was also a charter boat captain on Lake Erie. He enjoyed shopping, flea marketing and visiting pawn shops, as he was a collector of Case knives. He also worked at Lake Tansi golf course as a golf ranger. Mr. Rutherford was a dedicated family man who loved his family very much.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Rutherford of Crossville; sons and daughter-in-law, Mark Rutherford of Toledo, OH and Andrew and Malinda Rutherford of Walbridge, OH; daughters and son-in-law, Wendy and John Krupa of Martin, OH and Pamela Rutherford of Crossville; twin sister, Brenda Sarmento of Athens, TN; grandchildren, Joshua Neagley, Eric Krupa, Michelle Rutherford, Brandon Neagley, Alex Krupa, Amanda Krupa, Andrew Rutherford II, Amanda Hooks and Angela Hooks; special niece, Angela Chelminiak and her husband, Peter, and their daughters, Allison, Julia and Renee; and the many family and friends whose lives he touched.

James L. Sattler
Aug. 20, 1917 - Oct. 13, 2003

James L. Sattler died peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of Oct. 13, 2003.
Born in Big Rapids, MI on Aug. 20, 1917, he graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1936. He began his long career as a tool and die specialist at Hanchett's tool and die in Big Rapids and in 1951 opened his own tool and die business in Traverse City. In 1974, Sattler relocated to Chattanooga, TN. Ten years later he retired from Roper Corporation.
Sattler was an accomplished artist, working mainly in metal sculpture, and was a prolific inventor. His patents include collapsible steps and retractable awnings for mobile homes, curved windshields for power boats, and most recently, a folding second seat for motorized scooters.
Sattler and his wife were active members of their church and during their years in Michigan, they took part in the youth ministry.
Sattler is preceded in death by his wife, Julis. They were married for 63 years.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Don Yarbrough of Winter Park, FL; sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Lynda Sattler of Chattanooga, TN and Jack and Judith Sattler of San Clemente, CA; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A visitation and memorial service will be held on Oct. 25 at the Fairfield Baptist Fellowship Church in Fairfield Glade, TN. Visitation starts at 10 a.m. with the service beginning at 11 a.m. CST.

He loved to play golf and enjoyed fishing and bowling. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Elks.

He was retired from the railroad and a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehova's Witnesses.

Paula Diane Colley, 46, of Nashville, passed away Oct. 22, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 26, at Rinnie Baptist Church, with burial in the Rinnie Cemetery. Bro. Grover Atkinson officiated.
Mrs. Colley was born May 12, 1957 in Monterey, TN.
She was a clerical worker for a printing company and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Keith Colley of Nashville; daughter, Nicole Colley of Nashville; parents, Peggy and Dexter Brady of Lancing, TN and James and Dorothy Hughes of Nashville; brother, Robert Wayne Whited of Lancing, TN; nephew, Jeremy Whited of Lancing, TN; special friends, James B.B. She was preceded in death by her brother, Wesley Dale Whited.

Sherry Marie Davis, 40, of Crossville, passed away Oct. 17, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 19 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Music Cemetery. Bro. Phil Jenkins officiated.
Ms. Davis was born Oct. 18, 1962 in Cumberland County, the daughter of John L. Davis and Juanita Wilson Davis.
She was an office worker at Cumberland Mountain State Park and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include her daughter, Stormy Davis of Crossville; mother, Juanita Davis of Crossville; brother, Elmer Davis of Crossville; and sisters, Penny Smith of Maryville and Peggy Myers of Crossville.
She was preceded in death by her father, John L. Davis.

Leith Friess
July 31, 1925 - Oct. 25, 2003

Leith "Ike" Friess, 78, former commander of American Legion Post 646 in Holland, OH, a retired truck driver and resident of Crossville, passed away Oct. 25, 2003.
Mr. Friess was born July 31, 1925, the son of Arthur and Edith Mae Friess of Perrysburg, OH.
After graduating from Perrysburg High School in 1943, he briefly attended the University of Toledo before joining the Naval Reserve in April 1944. After basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, he was assigned to Landing Craft Support Ship 55 in Albany, CA, and achieved the rank of Motor Machinist 3rd Class. He left the Navy in June 1946 and returned to Perrysburg with three awards - the World War II Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific and American Area Service Ribbons.
Well known for his patriotism, Mr. Friess eventually joined American Legion Post 646 in Holland, OH, and became active leader in Legion activities. During the '60s, he managed the Legion's primary fund-raising activity for the town of Holland - their annual Strawberry Festival. He was also a regular guest at Springfield High School in Holland, where he helped communicate the importance of citizenship by administering a civics test to students as part of their Social Studies classes. In 1985, he was elected Commander of Post 646 and traveled frequently to promote government and civil recognition for the sacrifices of military veterans. He was also elected to the elite 40 & 8 group.
In 1986, he retired from the Duff Trucking Company and eventually moved to Crossville, TN, where he joined the "Bandits" and "Senior" Golf Leagues at Lake Tansi and Fairfield Glade. He also took up the hobby of creating handmade rugs, many of which he donated for local charity fund-raising events, including the Cumberland County Playhouse.
Survivors include his loving sister, Janice King; brothers, Olen and Jay Friess; children, Richard, Art and Mike Friess and Cheryl Khalaf; grandsons, Norman, Matt and Chris; and an extended group of family and friends in Ohio, Michigan and Tennessee who will miss his good heartedness and sense of volunteerism.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 at the mortuary of Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Road, Toledo, OH.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Fair Park Senior Center or the Cumberland County Playhouse.

Stacy Earnest Garrett, 25, of Crossville, passed away Oct. 21, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 23 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Pomona Cemetery. Bros. David Dalton and Arlon Way officiated. Music was provided by the Lantana Church of Christ Singers.
Stacy was born Jan. 18, 1978 in Cumberland County, the son of Leroy and Linda Faye Fields Garrett.
He was a student and a member of Lantana Church of Christ.
Survivors include his parents, Leroy and Linda Garrett of Crossville; brother, Sam Garrett of Crossville; grandparents, Waymon and Wanda Fields of Crossville; grandmother, Aileen Hall of Crossville; nieces, Ashlee, Blaklee and Faith; and nephews, Alex, Rylee and Izac.

Bobby L. Hensley
Aug. 23, 1932 - Oct. 2, 2003

Bobby Lewis Hensley, 71, of Spencer, formerly of Crossville, passed away Oct. 2, 2003 at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, TN after an extended illness. He was born in Sequatchie County, TN on Aug. 23, 1932, the son of Raymond and Gladys (Sparks) Hensley.
He was a long distance truck driver for 39 years, having logged several million miles during his career with no accountable accidents.
He was affectionately called "Pop" by his children and many others who "adopted" him. He was a very loving father and grandfather. He was a member of the Mooneyham Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lola Mae Hensley.
He is survived by his wife Pauline Hensley; son, Darryl Hensley of Quebec; daughters, Valerie Wood of Crossville and Holly Hensley of Cookeville; brother, Hershel Hensley of Crossville; sister, Connie Bickford of Spencer; grandchildren, Matthew, Joseph, Ethan and Kristy; great-grandchildren, Lorryn and Aleysah; seven stepdaughters, three stepsons; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Services were conducted at Mooneyham Church of God with Bro. Wayne Sullivan, Bro. J.T. Davis and Bro. Doug Cunningham officiating. Burial was at Graveyard Ridge Cemetery in Van Buren County.
Pallbearers were Joe Tucker, Steve Hensley, Jeff Hensley, Travis Worley, Robert Thompson Jr. and Joe Scott.

Woodrow Newberry
May 1, 1919 - Oct. 15, 2003

Woodrow Newberry, 84, of Crossville, passed away Oct. 15, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 17 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. Robert Dodson officiating. The Honor Guard of Monterey provided military honors including presentation of the flag and "Taps" at Green Acres Memory Gardens.
Mr. Newberry was born May 1, 1919 in Overton County, TN, the son of Ben and Rebecca Ledford Newberry.
He was a rancher and served in the Army during World War II. He was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his wife, Maude Newberry of Crossville; brothers, Kirby Newberry of Cookeville and Bennie Newberry of Crossville; sisters, Anna Conner of Ohio, Josie Williams of Florida, Oleta Cox of Crossville and Flora Klein of Orlando, FL.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Clyde Newberry and Bedford Newberry; and sister, Peggy Simmons.
Pallbearers were David Newberry, Jerry Newberry, Tom Newberry, Richard E. Dodson, Ferlin Wynacht and Tony Pugh.

Ronald L. Springfield
Oct. 3, 2003

Ronald L. Springfield, 63, of Jefferson City, TN, passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, in San Antonio, TX from a brain aneurysm.
Mr. Springfield attended the First United Methodist Church of Jefferson City. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, Security Services. He graduated from Tennessee Technological University with a B.S. degree and from the University of Tennessee, Memphis, with a Doctorate of Pharmacy. He retired from Revco after 19 years of service.
He loved sports and always supported the Jefferson County teams. He was also an avid motorcycle enthusiast, having traveled extensively around the United States and enjoyed it until his death, which occurred while traveling with his wife in Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, R.L. Springfield and Odell Springfield Halstead.
Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Sue Springfield; sons and daughters-in-law, Tex and Tiffany Springfield of Powell, TN and Bubba and Lori Springfield of Strawberry Plains, TN; grandchildren, Kaitlin and Macy Springfield of Strawberry Plains; and special puppy, Petey. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Tom Edd Wilson of Signal Mountain, TN; sister-in-law, Gail Kerley of Crossville; and mother-in-law, Duckie Wilson of Crossville.
Memorial services were held on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003 at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel in Jefferson City, with the Rev. Janice Robertson officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Oncology Department of Children's Hospital, PO Box 15011, Knoxville, TN 37901, in honor of his granddaughter, Kaitlin Springfield.

James F. Tilley

James Franklin Tilley, 74, of Crossville, passed away Oct. 20, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 24 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Mike Kerley officiated.
Mr. Tilley was born Feb. 3, 1929 in Modoc, WV.
He was retired from the military and was a tool and die maker.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Ayers Tilley; brothers, Lloyd W. Tilley, Roy D. Tilley and Charles E. Tilley, all of Princeton, WV; and sisters, Pansy Eller of Pleasant Hill, Sue Diegel of Baltimore, MD and Jean Morehead of Rising Sun, MD.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Cebert, Joseph, Robert and Odean Tilley; and sister, Myrtle Mincey.
The Veterans Honor Guard served as pallbearers.

LaVern Davis Atchley, of Crossville, formerly of Corryton, passed away Oct. 27, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Walters Chapel in LaFollette, TN, with eulogy by Dwight Davis. Interment will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, at Sunrise Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday before the services at Walters Funeral Home in LaFollette.
Mrs. Atchley was born and raised in LaFollette, TN and was a member of the first graduating class of the University of Tennessee Nursing School in 1957. She retired from St. Mary's Medical Center and moved to Lake Tansi in 1995. Her life was spent caring for others, and nowhere was this more apparent than in the love and support she gave to her family.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt and nana and touched the lives of everyone who knew her. "People walk into our lives, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never the same again."
Survivors include her husband, Billy Ross Atchley of Crossville; daughters and son-in-law, Tamalynn and Johnny Sowders of Knoxville, Lisa Atchley of Crossville and Elizabeth Atchley of Knoxville; grandchildren, Danielle Anjolyn Sowders, Jonathan Ross Sowders and LaNella Kathleen Atchley; sisters and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Charles Byrge of Crossville, Mary Haynes of Oak Ridge, Hazel White of Monroeville, OH and Nena Proctor of Norwalk, OH; brothers and sister-in-law, Jesse and Addie Davis of Feather Falls, CA and Bobby Davis of El Paso, TX; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Christian was born May 8, 1937 in Queens, NY, the daughter of Matthew and Victoria Gullotti Hollander.
She was a retired customer service representative at Pergeament Home Center and a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. She was owner of Marietta's Antique Shop on Dripping Springs Rd.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Christian of Monterey, TN; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Evelyn Christian of Cookeville; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Bob Nicolosi and Dawn and Tom Gerardi, all of Monterey; grandchildren, Robert and Philip Nicolosi, Preschilla Villasenor and Danielle and Brielle Gerardi; and great-grandchildren, Vinny, Frank and Jesse.
