James. R. Jernigan
Nov. 28, 1918 - May 24, 2004

James Ray Jernigan, of Crossville, passed away May 24, 2004. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 31, at Bilbrey Funeral Home. The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bros. Wade Webster and Phil Jenkins officiating and special music by Baxter Sherrill. Burial will be in Crossville City Cemetery.
Mr. Jernigan was born Nov. 28, 1918 in Bedford County, TN, the son of James and Ola Wiser Jernigan.
He moved to Crossville in 1956, managing the K&W Shoe Store on Main Street until 1991. A faithful member of the Main Street Church of Christ since moving to Crossville, he was a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club. He was honorably discharged from the Army, serving as a medic in World War II campaigns in North Africa and Italy.
He will be greatly missed as a much loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who guided his family by setting a strong example of love through his faith in Christ.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Sue and Greg Blaylock, Robin and Carrie Jernigan, all of Crossville, and Jay and Mary Jernigan of Knoxville; grandchildren, Brandi and Heath Blaylock, Sonja and Brianne Bors of Crossville, Eric Jernigan of Strawberry Plains, Matt Jernigan of Rockwood, Josh Jernigan, Amy Stansverry of Knoxville and Andrew Clark of Oak Ridge; brothers, Medford, Cleve, Willard and Wayne Jernigan; eight great-grandchildren; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jernigan; and sister, Evelyn Jernigan.
Pallbearers will be Joshua, Eric and Matthew Jernigan; Heath Blaylock; Tyler Blaylock; and Andrew Clark.

Virgil W. Fowler
Dec. 13, 1922 - May 19, 2004

Virgil W. Fowler, 81, of Crossville (Tansi), passed away May 19, 2004. Viewing and memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery.
Mr. Fowler was born Dec. 13, 1922 in Des Moines, IA, the son of Sula McCoy Fowler and Benton Fowler.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He resided over the years in Sparta, TN; Dayton, OH; Moraine, OH; West Carrollton, OH; and Lakeland, FL. He was a member of Crystal Lake Baptist Church of Lakeland, FL. He served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II and in the Merchant Marines. While residing in Dayton, he was employed by National Cash Register (NCR). While residing in West Carrollton, he was employed as a life insurance agents, retiring in 1985 from Gulf Life/American General Insurance.
He was a member of VFW posts in West Carrollton, OH; Lakeland and Mulberry, FL; and Crossville. Additionally, he was a member of the American Legion in Lakeland and Mulberry, FL. He enjoyed travel, fishing and playing the guitar.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Joyce Fowler of Crossville; sons, Teddy and Edward Fowler of Crossville and Mark Fowler of Orlando, FL; sister, Elise Nellums of Tampa, FL; and grandchildren, Scott, Jared, Zachery, Erin and Jonathan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joe Lee Fowler; and sisters, Kathleen May, Marie Frasier and Zula Mae Combee.

Bernice E. Kelly
May 16, 2004

Bernice Ester Kelly, 81, widow of Colby E. Kelly, formerly of Lexington, MA and Tucson, AZ, now of Fairfield Glade, passed away May 16, 2004. Services are pending at Big Island Pond in Derry, NH.
Mrs. Kelly was born in 1922 in Lawence, MA, the oldest child of Joseph Gack Engstrand Sr. and Mabel Reinhold Engstrand.
She was a teacher of music. A 1944 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, formerly Lowell State Teachers College, she was an accomplished pianist and organist and was actively involved with the teenage youths in Lexington. At Fairfield Glade, Bernice and her husband, Ed O'Neill, were golfers and world travelers. Both were active in the World War II 386 Bomb Group.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and James Griffiths of Plainfield, NH and Pamela and Jeffrey Chute of Plymouth, MA; grandsons, Ben and Andrew Chute of Plymouth, MA; and brother, Joseph Gack Engstrand Jr. of Long Island, NY.
The family requests memorials be made to the University of Massachusetts, Lowell Office of University Advancement, 600 Suffolk St., 2nd Floor, Lowell, MA 01854 in memory of Bernice Kelly.

Billy E. Rich
May 14, 2004

Billy Eugene Rich, 72, of Savannah, TN, passed away May 14, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 16 from the chapel of Shackelford Funeral Home of Savannah, TN, with burial in Mount Hermon Cemetery in Hardin County, TN.
Mr. Rich attended Olivet Presbyterian Church, and worked for Brown Show Company for 42 years.
Survivors include his son, Mark Rich of Crossville; two grandchildren; sisters, Reba Horton and Jessie Cromwell, both of Savannah; and brother, Emory Rich of Savannah.

Paul Capps
Aug. 4, 1919 - May 11, 2004

Paul Capps, 84, of Crossville, passed away May 11, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 14 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Center Cemetery in Chestnut Hill. Bro. Donnie Umphrey officiated.
Mr. Capps was born Aug. 4, 1919 in Cumberland County, the son of Quince Capps and Amanda Leffew Capps.
He was a farmer and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth Davenport of Crossville; four grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Ethel Reeves of Rockwood.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Center Capps; brothers, Roy, Henry and Frank Capps; and sisters, Ethel, Ruth and Linnie Capps.
Pallbearers were Eric Thompson, Dustin Davenport, Justin Davenport; Thomas Pelfrey; Drew Buchannon and Emily Jane Buchannon.

Buddy S. Dill
May 16, 2004

Buddy S. Dill, 73, of Rockwood, passed away May 16, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, from the chapel of Evans Mortuary, with the Rev. Charles Kelley officiating. Graveside and interment services will be held Thursday, May 20, at 11 a.m. in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Mr. Dill was of the Christian faith. Before his retirement, he was employed at Union Carbide as a machinist.
Survivors include his sons, Wayne Dill of Rockwood, Randy Dill of Rockwood and Jeffrey Dill of Nashville; granddaughters, Melanie and Chris White of Texas; grandsons, Anthony Dill of Texas, John Dill of Harriman and Daniel Dill of Rockwood; seven great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Ray Simpson of Rockwood; brothers and sister-in-law, Corky Dill of Kingston and John and Kathy Dill of Knoxville; aunt, Helen Threet of Toledo, OH; uncle, John Jordan of Connecticut; and special friend, "Spraky."

Amanda S. Manning
Jan. 28, 1933 - May 12, 2004

Amanda Sue Manning, 71, of Crossville, passed away May 12, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 15 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Linary Cemetery. Bro. Ricky Burse officiated.
Mrs. Manning was born Jan. 28, 1933 in Cumberland County, the daughter of Calvin and Lydia Mae Jones Rector.
She was retired from Kmart and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include her son, Jeff Manning of Crossville; daughters, Jean Brown and Jan Reed of Crossville; grandchildren, Kirby, Kelsey, Amanda and Eric.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude (Cotton) Manning; brother, Clyde Rector; and sisters, Lucille Bilbrey and Janie Rector.
Pallbearers were Jeff Turner, Brent Hayes, Steve Vance, Lyle Houston, B.J. Hayes and Tim Kerley.

Sara J. Myers
Nov. 24, 1918 - May 13, 2004

Sara Jane Myers, 85, of Pleasant Hill, passed away May 13, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 16 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and May 17 from Marietta Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Knoxville, with burial at Marietta Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Bill Selecman and Scott White officiated.
Mrs. Myers was born Nov. 24, 1918 in Hamilton County, TN, the daughter of Cornelius and Bertha Hickman List.
She was a retired school teacher and member of Central Baptist Church in Crossville and Marietta Cumberland Presbyterian in Knoxville.
Survivors include her husband, James Myers of Pleasant Hill; sons and daughters-in-law, William L. "Bill" and Bobbie Myers of Hillsboro, TN, James R. "Rusty" and Lisa Myers of Knoxville and David H. Myers of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, Sarah C. Kizer and husband, Mary E. Myers, Michael J. Myers, Wendy D. Myers, Benjamin D. Myers, Bryan C. Myers and wife, Maggie E. "Beth" Waterman, Beverly D. Keele and husband, Belinda L. Myers, Rebecca A. Myers and Andrew T. Myers; great-grandchildren, Christopher Waterman, Thomas Kizer and Christopher Kizer; sisters, Martha L. Cleo C. Taylor
July 5, 1919 - May 13, 2004

Cleo Clayton Taylor passed away May 13, 2004 at his home in Fairfield Glade. Memorial services were conducted May 17 at the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church.
Mr. Taylor was born July 5, 1919 in Clarkrange, TN. He was raised by his parents, William and Maggie Taylor, and graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
He served his country proudly as a captain in the U.S. Army in World War II and spent four years overseas during the war. He was awarded the Bronze Star. He later worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered a federal milk order.
The Taylors lived in Cleveland, OH, for 12 years before he retired in 1979. They moved to Fairfield Glade, TN, in 1983.
An active member of the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church, Taylor taught the Friendship Sunday school class for 17 years. He spent much of his free time wood carving, gardening and preparing lessons for his Sunday school class. Most of all, he enjoyed the time he spent with his family. His wife, Virginia, describes her husband as a man dedicated to his faith, his church and his family.
The last day of his life, Mr. Taylor was busy planting flowers in his garden and doting on his lovely wife.
Survivors include his wife and best friend for 35 years, Virginia Taylor; their children, Irene Taylor Scarborough (Ben) of Rockwall, TX, Beth Bible of Dayton, OH, Al Bible (Margaret) of Jackson, MS, and his son-in-law, Lamar Hendricks of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren, Mike Scarborough of Euless, TX, Rob Scarborough of St. Charles, MO, Susan Scarborough of Dallas, TX, Brooke Bible of Jackson, MS, Allen Bible of New Orleans, LA, Rochelle Hendricks of Cincinnati, OH, Jim Hendricks of Dayton, OH, Dan Hendricks of Dayton, OH and David Hendricks of Dayton, OH; great-grandchildren, Christian Baker and Taytum Scarborough; brothers, Oda Taylor of Clarkrange and Clay Taylor of Lake Tansi; and a multitude of friends and relatives who love him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Opal Evans Taylor, in 1968, and a great-grandson, Blake Scarborough, in 2003.

Rue Lee King, 56, of Crossville, passed away May 10, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 13 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Booher Cemetery. Eddie Kilgore officiated.
Mr. King was born May 28, 1947 in Overton County, the son of Walter Greene King and Minnie Oshie Pryor King.
He was a construction worker.
Survivors include his daughter, Karen LeRue Strock of Baxter; grandchildren, Brandon Farr, Brady Gilley and Cameron Strock of Baxter; sisters, LaVella Kirkpatrick of Atlanta, GA, Treva Denhart of Crawfordville, FL, Vicky Lynn Smith of Knoxville, Wanda Lou King, Edna Delma Wightman and Kathy Gwen Wightman, all of Crossville; and brothers, Ray King of Livingston, Dallas Walter King of Crossville and John Harris King of Sparta.

Alfred C. Lange
July 28, 1942 - May 9, 2004

Alfred C. Lange, 61, of Crab Orchard, passed away May 9, 2004.
Mr. Lange was born July 28, 1942 in Detroit, MI, the son of Alfred and Patricia Lange.
He was retired from General Motors in Detroit, MI, where he was employed as an inspection jobsetter and in quality assurance as an inspector. He was a Dale Carnegie graduate, possessed firefighting skills and served in the U.S. Navy as an aerial photographer during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Survivors include his sister, Joyce M. Spence of Crossville; brother, Stanley Lange of Crossville; and several nieces and nephews.

Earl D. Moore
March 22, 1943 - May 9, 2004

Earl D. Moore, 61, of Crossville, passed away May 9, 2004. Memorial services were conducted May 12 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. Mike Kirby officiating. The Honor Guard of Putnam County provided the military honors of presentation of the flag, firing detail and "Taps."
Mr. Moore was born March 22, 1943 in Yukon, WV, the son of Dewey and Annie VanDyke Moore.
He was an auto worker for General Motors and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was in the Marine Corps Honor Guard in Washington, DC under President John F. Kennedy's administration.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma "Lee" England Moore of Crossville; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Cheryl Kennedy of Crossville and Richard and Tia Moore of Cookeville; daughter, Melissa Moore and her fiancé, J.B. Wallace of Crossville; grandchildren, Nicole Gardner, David Kennedy and Rebecca Kennedy; brothers, Dewey Moore and his wife, Denise Moore, of New Jersey and Steve Moore of West Virginia; special nephew, Kenneth and his wife, Lee Moore, of Bristol; and special friend, Terry Salter of Michigan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Mae Moore.

Everett M. Potter
Aug. 2, 1983 - May 1, 2004

Everett Matthew "Matt" Potter, 20, of Knoxville, formerly of Crossville, passed away May 1, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 6 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Clifty Cemetery. Bro. Robert Lawrence officiated, with comments by Vince Brown and special music by Adrian Detweiler.
Mr. Potter was born Aug. 2, 1983 in Cumberland County, the son of Randall Matthew Potter and Heather Angelica Hale.
He was of the Baptist faith. He had been a DJ, had worked for a furniture moving/delivery company and was beginning a new job at the rock quarry. His interests were women, music, fast cars and having a good time with his family and friends. He is loved by all and will be missed.
Survivors include his daughters, Madison and Caitlin Potter of Crossville; mother, Angelica (Doris) Hale of Crossville; father and stepmother, Randall Matthew and Jeanine Potter of Crossville; finacée, Kelly Walters of Crossville; brothers, Cody and Chase Potter of Crossville; grandfather, Dan Hale and his wife, Debbie, of Crossville; grandparents, Everett and Dixie Potter of Crossville; great-grandmother, Katherine Marable and her husband, John, of Chattanooga; great-grandfather, Ellis Hodge and his wife, Laura, of Pleasant Hill; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Vernie W. Smith
Sept. 9, 1945 - May 5, 2004

Vernie Wayne Smith, 58 of Fairfield Glade, passed away May 5, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 8 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. The Rev. David Evangelista officiated, with special music by Deloy Brown and Sybil Brown.
Mr. Smith was born Sept. 9, 1945 in West Frankfort, IL, the son of Vernie F. and Edna Agnes Fletcher Smith.
He was a journeyman electrician with Northern Indiana Public Service Company for 32 years and attended Grave Evangelical Fellowship. He was an avid golfer and loved music and singing. He was the singing worship leader in his church for 14 years in Indiana. He also received many awards for his 1958 Pontiac Star Chief that he restored. He had a great sense of humor and was very much loved by his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Janis Lawless Smith of Fairfield Glade; mother and stepfather, Edna and Bob Fann of DuQuoin, IL; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Wayne and Kara Smith of Indianapolis, IN; daughter, Valerie Lynn Smith of Las Vegas, NV; sisters and brothers-in-law, Recenah and Jerry Trover of Illinois, Sandra and Craig Strech of San Diego, CA and Mary and Rick Williams of DuQuoin, IL; grandchildren, Makenzie Erin Smith; mother-in-law, Norma Lawless of Portage, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Jacob Horn, Jerry Trover, Collin Ceto, Michael Strech, Craig Strech, Rick Williams, Malcolm Brown, Keith McKim, Chuck Ely and Riley Feltman.

James Whittaker
Nov. 20, 1934 - May 4, 2004

James Whittaker, 69, of Crossville, passed away May 4, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 7 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. James Ford conducting.
Mr. Whittaker was born Nov. 20, 1934 in Hazard, KY, the son of Grant Whittaker and Julie Ann Haddux Whittaker.
He was a stone mason and served in the U.S. Army. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Whittaker of Crossville; daughters, Julie Martin of Crossville, Reba Robbins of Crossville, Diane Phillips of Monterey and Janice Lane of Newport; sons, James Arthur Whittaker of Little Buck Horn, KY, James Edward Whittaker and William Thomas Whittaker, both of Crossville; and 17 grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three grandchildren.

Mitchell D. Willis
June 15, 1960 - May 11, 2004

Mitchell Dale Willis, 43, of Crossville, passed away May 11, 2004. Funeral services will be announced at a later date.
Mr. Willis was born June 15, 1960 in Miami, FL.
He did stucco work in construction.
Survivors include his father, Darrell Willis of Crossville; sons, Michael D. Willis and Kenneth W. Willis of Crossville; brothers, Michael D. Willis of Crossville, William D. Willis, Bryant Beach and Kenneth Beach, all of Texas; sisters, Sheryl Lloyd of Florida and Tracy Nicholas of Texas; and aunt, Alma Kay Johnson of Crossville.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon Diane Brown.

Carolyn G. Cox
July 21, 1946 - May 1, 2004
Carolyn Genece Cox, 57, of Crab Orchard, passed away May 1, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 5 at Crab Orchard Church of God of Prophecy, with burial in Haley's Grove Cemetery. Bro. Jack Lawson and Bro. Luther Masengale officiated, with special music by John Pugh, Marcie Green, Janice Norris and Thomas Brady.
Ms. Cox was born July 21, 1946 in Cumberland County, the daughter of Chat and Dellery Potter Brady.
She was a homemaker and a member of Crab Orchard Church of God of Prophecy. Her life revolved around her church and family with her grandchildren being so very precious to her. She loved to shop, yard sale and collect dolls and angels.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Gerry and Hannah Cox of Crossville, Lynn and Whitney Cox of Maryville, Tim and Renee Cox of Crossville and Tony Cox, also of Crossville; brothers, Jr. Brady, Milton Brady and Everett Potter, all of Crab Orchard; and grandchildren, Dustin, Chad, Dillon and Haylie Cox, Madison, Carter and Caroline Cox and Gage and Mason Cox.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Ms. Cox's sons and brothers served as pallbearers.

Anne E. Sanders

Anne Elise Sanders, 20, of Crossville, passed away May 10, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 12 at Schubert Funeral Home of Wartburg, with Bro. Don Hunter officiating. Graveside services were conducted May 13 at Bowman Cemetery in Crossville.
Ms. Sanders was born May 10, 1984 in Peoria, IL.
She attended school in Fentress County where she was loved by all who knew her, mainly for all the kindness in her heart. Later she moved to Cumberland County to begin her life as a young adult, where she continued to spread her kindness, love and care to everyone she met. The love she shared with others will always be remembered. Her family will hold her in their hearts forever and will miss her greatly.
Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Sherry Sanders Overholt and Dewey Overholt; father, Kurt Canow of Long View, MO; her loving fiancé, Robbie W. Bowman, and soon-to-be stepson, Cameron B. Bowman, both of Crossville; brothers, Emmett Sanders of Canton, IL and Chris Sanders of Crossville; sister, Heather Bilyeu of Crossville; uncle, Tommy Henry; cousin, Jennifer Henry; and two nieces and two nephews, all of Crossville.

Earl F. Scarbrough
May 22, 1928 - May 9, 2004

Earl Franklin Scarbrough, 75, of Crossville, passed away May 9, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 12 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Thomas Springs Cemetery. The Rev. Gene Burgess officiated.
Mr. Scarbrough was born May 22, 1928 in Pikeville, the son of Nora Miller Scarbrough and Lewis Scarbrough.
He was a laborer.
Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Cecil Patton; special niece, Vicki Johnson; stepbrother, Eddie Scarbrough; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Edna Scarbrough; and brother-in-law, James Lockwood.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Scarbrough and Virginia Lockwood.

David Michael Shaffer, 39, of Kingston, TN, passed away May 8, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 13 from the chapel of Evans Mortuary of Rockwood, with the Rev. Matthew Cannon and the Rev. Carl Armes officiating. Graveside services and interment were held May 14 in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Shaffer attended the Cardiff Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Christy Shaffer of Kingston; children, Phillip Michael Shaffer and Jessica Marie Shaffer, both of Crossville; several stepchildren; parents, Mike and Wilma Shaffer of Rockwood; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia Ann and Billy Hughes of Rockwood; brother and sister-in-law, James Anthony and Bridget Shaffer of Kingston; special nephew, William Hughes; and special aunts and uncles, Jim and Trudy Pelfrey of Rockwood, Carl Jr. and Joann Pelfrey of Rockwood, Sandra and Willard Humphreys and Robert Snavley of Arlington, TX.

Clarence Edward Bushway, 79, of Fairfield Glade, passed away May 1, 2004. Funeral services were held May 5 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Shelton officiating.
Mr. Bushway was born Aug. 14, 1924 in Hamtramck, MI, the son of Clarence and Stella Selicki Bushway.
He was a retired sergeant with the Lincoln Park, MI Police Department and a member of Fairfield Glade Fellowship Baptist Church. He was also a United States Marine veteran, having served our country in World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Willa Bushway of Fairfield Glade; son, Tim Bushway of Lincoln Park, MI; daughters and son-in-law, Kathy Mastre of San Jose, CA, Pattie Bushway of Wyandott, MI and Debbie and Rich Capra of Allen Park, MI; sister, Bernice Skomial of Highland, MI; and grandchildren, Rachael and Mike Mastre of California and Ryan and Melissa Capra of Michigan.

Dewey Frazier, 85, of Crossville, passed away April 28, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 1 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. Joey Campbell officiating and special music by Carl Tucker. Burial was in Bolin Cemetery where Honor Guard Chapter 32 provided the presentation of flag, firing detail and "Taps."
Mr. Frazier was born April 4, 1919 in Cumberland County, the son of John and Eliza VanWinkle Frazier.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Jimroe Frazier, Llyod Frazier and Floyd and Christine Frazier, all of Crossville, and Darrell and Linda Frazier of Pikeville; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Dennis Sassenger of Fernandina Beach, FL, Debbie and Larry Wilkinson of Yulee, FL and Sandra Strachn of Crossville; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Mary Lou Underwood of Crossville and Maggie Olsen of Montana; and former wife, Agnes Bolin of Crossville.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dewey Wayne; daughter, Nancy Evelyn; and grandchildren, Michael, Cade and Barry.

Sonia Louise Harwood, 65, of Crossville, passed away May 4, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 8 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Harwood Family Cemetery. Joe James officiated.
Ms. Harwood was born Jan. 28, 1939 in Russell, FL, the daughter of Otto and Allie Mae Starling.
She was a housekeeper and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her children, Samuel Harwood, Pam Brummitt and Candy Harwood, all of Crossville; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Starling of Colorado Springs, CO; and sisters, Patsy Crockett and Catherine Roberts, both of Green Cove Springs, FL.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles and Gene L. Starling; sister, Lois Green; and great-grandson, Issac Mifflin.

Freda Smith, 64, of Fairfield Glade, passed away May 1, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 6 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. The Rev. Tom Shelton officiated, with special music by Rick Davenport.
Mrs. Smith was May 21, 1939 in Oneida, TN, the daughter of Cecil Milton and Lila Irene Terry Blakenship.
She had worked in administration for the U-45 School District in Elgin, IL, was a member of Fairfield Glade Baptist Church and the Baptist Women's Circle. She loved flowers and gardening.
Survivors include her husband, J.W. Smith of Fairfield Glade; sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Jean Smith of Springfield, TN and Weston and Jackie Smith of Peru, IL; brothers, Milton Cecil Blankenship of Oneida, TN and Willard Terry Blankenship of Arkansas; sister, Etta Marie Jeffers of Georgia; grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn, Eric J. II, Amanda Grace, Faith Danielle and Austin James Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

Lynda Louise Taylor, 41, of Crossville, passed away May 2, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 5 at the First Baptist Church, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. The Rev. David Wilkerson officiated.
Ms. Taylor was born Feb. 6, 1963 in Knox County, the daughter of Sue Janow Taylor and Charles William Taylor.
She was an instructor for Tennessee Technology Center, a member of First Baptist Church and a member of the Youth Center Board. She attended Hollins College in Roanoke, VA and Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville. She had a B.S. in computer science and accounting and a master's in business administration.
Survivors include her mother, Sue Taylor of Crossville; and brother, William Taylor of Louisville, KY.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charles William Taylor; and grandparents, Jim and Annie Janow and Robert and Emma Taylor.

Carmon L. Templeton, 91, of Crossville, passed away May 3, 2004. Funeral services were conducted May 6 from the Clarkrange Chapel, with burial in Clarkrange Cemetery. Bro. Hobert Delk officiated.
Mr. Templeton was born July 30, 1912 in Livingston, TN, the son of Robert Templeton and Hennie Ledbetter Templeton.
He was a factory worker at Tool & Die and a member of the Hwy. 127 First Baptist Church in Crossville. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served our country during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie Templeton of the Rinnie community; sons, Willard L. Templeton of Oregon and Julian Ray Templeton of Florida; stepdaughter, Lucille Redman of Michigan; stepson, Bill Seaboat of McMinnville; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Whittaker was born Nov. 20, 1934 in Hazard, KY, the son of Grant Whittaker and Julie Ann Haddux Whittaker.
He was a stone mason and served in the U.S. Army. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Whittaker of Crossville; daughters, Julie Martin of Crossville, Reba Robbins of Crossville, Diane Phillips of Monterey and Janice Lane of Newport; sons, James Arthur Whittaker of Crossville, James Edward Whittaker of Crossville and William Thomas Whittaker of Hazard, KY; and 17 grandchildren.

Wendell Farmer, 63, of Pikeville, passed away May 5, 2004. Services will be held Saturday, May 8, at 10 a.m. CDT from the chapel of Putnam-Reed Funeral Home of Pikeville, with Bro. Albert Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Collier Cemetery.
Mr. Farmer was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, a former member of the IBEW Local 846 and a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include his daughters, Joy (Bill) Sapp and Lisa (Ronnie) Campbell, both of Crossville; grandchildren, Jordan D. Farmer, Billy Jack, Ben, Bob and Braiden Sapp; sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Blake Knight of Dunlap; and brother, Robert Steele of Ohio.

Bessie K. Dayton

Bessie (Bess) Kennedy Dayton, 69, of Crossville, passed away April 27, 2004. Funeral services were conducted April 30 at Pomona Methodist Church with burial in Pomona Cemetery. Bro. Bratton Tucker and Bro. Cliff Ingram officiated with special music by the Pomona Methodist Church Choir.
Mrs. Dayton was born Dec. 10, 1934 in Anderson County, TN, the daughter of Harrison and Johanna Bray Kennedy.
She was a housewife and a faithful member of the Pomona Methodist Church. She was a woman under God's control and lived her life to its highest and fullest. Floyd and Bess were married in Georgia on Aug. 12, 1953. While her young family lived in North Carolina, she was a singer of the "Glory Gospel Trio." When her family moved back to Cumberland County, she became a faithful member of Pomona Methodist Church and sang in the choir. As a dedicated Christian, she not only ministered to others in music, but ministered to children through the foster parent program. She loved unconditionally and never turned anyone away.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd J. Dayton of Crossville; sons, David Lynn Dayton of Newport News, VA, Darrell Lee Dayton of Asheville, NC and Anthony Dwayne Dayton of Crossville; daughter, Diane Dayton Powell of Florida; grandchildren, Teresa Dianne Powell, Tina Lea Powell, Terri Lynn Powell, Thomas Larry Powell, Travis Lemuel Powell, Timothy Lael Powell, Michelle Dayton Rose, Cheryl Dayton Brehm and Nicole Destiny Dayton; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Kennedy of Crab Orchard; sister, Kelly Smith of Crossville; and a host of other family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ed and Willard; sisters, Mary and Christine; and great-grandson, Thomas Larry Powell Jr.

Dorothy Mae Taylor, 70, of Sparta, passed away April 28, 2004. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witness in Sparta, with visitation from 2-3 p.m. Ken Cabral will officiate, with burial in Cliffty Cemetery.
Mrs. Taylor was born Aug. 22, 1933, in Cumberland County.
She was a member of Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witness in Sparta and was a social worker. She was a Jehovah's Witness minister and enjoyed her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas E. Taylor of Sparta; children, Steve Taylor of Sparta, Damon Taylor of Woodberry, Daniel Taylor of Franklin, Tommy Taylor of Sparta and Sharon Pierce of Sparta; 16 grandchildren; brother, John Meadows of Sparta; sisters, Marion Booker of Nashville and Blanch Young of Kingston; and great-uncle, Ellis Hodge of Pleasant Hill.

Teresa Jean Marlow Wilson, 42, of Ashland City, TN, passed away April 14, 2004. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 25, at the First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Carleton Thackston and Sandy Shawhan officiating. Family will receive friends 1-3 p.m. Sunday, two hours prior to the service.
Ms. Wilson was born Jan. 18, 1962 in Rockwood, TN, the daughter of Ralph and Wanda Montgomery Marlow.
She was a nurse tech and a member of the First United Methodist Church. She attended Roane State Community College. She was an avid reader and loved working with children.
Survivors include her son, Jacob Wilson of Ashland City; daughter, Jessica Wilson of Crossville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Ellen and Wesley Walden of Ashland City and Rachel and Ronnie Hill of Crossville; and brother and sister-in-law, David and Dina Marlow of California.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by he brother, Gary Wayne Marlow; stepsister, Cathy Gibson; and stepmother, Jane Cravens Marlow.
