Maude Clark
Nov. 17, 1913 - April 4, 2005

Maude Clark of the Woody community passed away April 4, 2005. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 6 from the Chapel of Hood Funeral Home with Bro. David Chaney officiating. Burial was in Green Acres Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers were Blaine Hedgecoth, Marvin Meyer, Randy Cooper, Alan Clark, Bill Graham and Kurt Clark.
Mrs. Clark, born Nov. 17, 1913, was well known during the 1960s, '70s and '80s in the Woody community, especially by the school children at Woody school who visited her store and through the grocery store that served the community. She ran Clark's grocery with her family, finding time to make quilts for her children's beds, for gardening, for canning food for the family, for serving and tending to her beautiful flowers. But those were not as important as her main purpose in life. Raising her seven children with her husband, Oakley Clark, was her main purpose. Mr. Clark passed away in 1980.
The Clarks moved from Byrdstown, TN, to Cincinnati, but relocated to Woody after four of their children were born. In Cincinnati, Mrs. Clark spent many nights walking the floor with her second child Edward, who had rheumatic fever. Moving to the country with fresh air and sunshine, as the doctors had suggested, had a healing affect on him.
But with seven children, there was always love in their home. Each child thought he was the favorite. Mrs. Clark tried to bring out the best in all of us. The children remember being drilled on the multiplication tables after school, protesting the teacher didn't assign that.
Through the years, family reunions were held every July 4th until recently, with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren gathering in her front yard. Christmas also brought her offspring home. Children would find their grandma's quilts and sleep on the floor, watching television and whispering all night. The sparkling Christmas tree lights reflected on the pies and cakes that lined the kitchen table.
Mr. and Mrs. Clark always tried to bring out the best in their children, teaching morals, values and spiritual values. The children are passing these on to their own children.
She is survived by sons Edward Clark and wife, Patricia, of Cookeville, Pete Clark and wife, Maggie, of Crossvillle, David Clark and wife, Rowena, of Sparta, and Don Clark of Charlestown, SC; daughters Rema Hedgecoth and husband, Blaine, of Crossville, Ruth Meyer and husband, Marvin, of Collingsville, IL, and Diana Pemberton and husband, C.W., of Crossville; brother, Luther Neal, of Crossville; and 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oakley Clark; granddaughter, Jessica Clark; and great-granddaughter, Jennifer Clark.
