68, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Dec. 21, 2000. Memorial services

Mrs. Banks was born April 10, 1932, in Erie, PA, the daughter
of Frank and Bertha Mae Swanson.
She was a homemaker.

IN, Kimberly Hamilton of Lexington, KY, Gail Pietrinferno of

Alan Banks of Richmond, KY, and James Banks of Fairfax, VA; sister
and brother-in-law, Beverly and Mitchell Labrozzi of Erie; brother,
Richard Swanson of St. Charles, IL; brothers and sisters-in-law,
James and Betty Swanson of Erie and Robert and Beth Swanson of
Meadville, PA; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Bertha Mae
Swanson; sister, Audrey Bartone; and brother, Frank Swanson.

Crossville, passed away Dec. 16, 2000, at Cumberland Medical

Mr. Barnwell was born Nov. 10, 1923, in Cumberland County, the
son of Eddie and Effie Brown Barnwell.
He was a laborer, and a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.

NC; brothers, Ray Barnwell and Homer Barnwell, both of Crossville;
sisters, Eva Tinnel and Leta Reagan, both of Crossville; four
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Beatrice Essary, 94, of Crossville,
passed away Dec. 19, 2000, at Cumberland Medical Center. Funeral

Mrs. Essary was born March 17, 1906, in Bledsoe County, TN, the
daughter of Thomas James Roberson and Mary Lou Hoge Swafford.
She was a school teacher, and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Joyce Pugh of Crossville;
and sister, Eula V. Lee of Chattanooga.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo Essary.

Mildred L. "Peg" Harding,
91, of Batavia, IL, formerly of Fairfield Glade, passed away
Dec. 19, 2000. Memorial services were conducted Dec. 22 at the
Michealsen Health Care Center's Fellowship Hall in Batavia, with
the Rev. Donna Nelson officiating. Interment was at Green Acres
Memorial Gardens in Crossville.
Mrs. Harding was born July 19, 1909, in Wallace, WV, the daughter
of Festus E. and Mary Robinson.
She and her husband Al Harding owned the Sea Spirit boating store
in Monmouth, IL, and owned and operated the Harding Trailer Company
in Cape Coral, FL, prior to retiring to Fairfield Glade. She
moved to the Holmstad Retirement Community in Batavia in 1991.
She was a member of Geneva United Methodist Church, and belonged
to the Road Runners church group.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Jeri and Chuck
Jonas of Naperville, IL; son and daughter-in-law, Ferrell H.
"Russ" Jr. and Anne Russell of Mequon, WI; brother,
Cecil Robinson of South Carolina; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren;
and many family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Festus and Mary Robinson;
her first husband, Ferrell H. Russell Sr.; and her second husband,
Al Harding.

Mrs. McGann was born April 10, 1936, in Dayton, TN, the daughter
of Franklin A. and Beulah Mae Gentry Reed.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Homesteads Baptist Church.

both of Murfreesboro, TN, and Becky McGann of Crossville; son,

She was preceded in death by her father, Franklin A. Reed; and

Short, 42, of Crossville, passed away Dec. 24, 2000, at St. Francis
Medical Center in Peoria, IL. Funeral services will be conducted

in Farmington, IL, with burial at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Farmington.

Mr. Short was born Dec. 5, 1958, in Canton, IL, the son of Mildred
Strieker and Clarence "Skippo" Short.
He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving for over 18 years,
and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jessie Barnwell; son, Danny Walls
of Farmington, MO; daughters, Donna Calhoune of Greenville, MO,

Navy veteran of World War II.

Jim Charles Harman, 73, of Tannersville,
VA, passed away Dec. 20, 2000, at Cumberland Medical Center.

Mr. Harman was born March 18, 1927, in Wilcoe, WV, the son of
Charles Flavous and Fannie Florence Davidson Harman.
He was a yardmaster with a railroad company, and a veteran of
World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Church
of Christ, the Saltville Golf Club and the Masonic Lodge in Columbus,
OH.

son of Rayburn and Lou Ella Renfroe Hassler.
He was an environmental control technician for Roane Electric,
and a member of First Christian Church of Crab Orchard. He was
a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Katy Marie Redwine Hassler of Ozone;
sons, Ray Newton Hassler of Ozone and Daniel Lynn Hassler of
Crossville; daughters, Palla Caprice Godsey of Ozone, Deborah
Edwards of Battle Creek, MI, and Opal Faye Holloway of Crab Orchard;

Mr. Gregg was born Oct. 6, 1915, in Detroit, MI, the son of Carl

Bible Baptist Church, singer, song writer, guitar player and
radio broadcaster.
Survivors include his daughters, Ogretta Yoakum of Whitmore Lake,
MI, Eleanor England of Clarkrange, TN, and Joyce Vanhoose of
Mt. Clemons, MI; brothers, Casper Johnson and Arvin Johnson;

Mrs. Moppert was born Jan. 28, 1930, in Fort Wayne, IN, the daughter
of Sam W. and Charlotte Dickenson Fletcher.
She was a tax processor for H&R Block, and a member of the
Presbyterian Church. She attended Duke University and was a past
member of Fort Wayne Limberlost Girl Scout Council, Indiana Law
Wives and the Saturday Club.
Survivors include her husband, Edward Moppert of Fairfield Glade;
daughter, Lori Keipper of Thousand Oaks, CA; sons, Phillip Moppert
of St. Louis, MO, and Fletcher Moppert of Fort Wayne; brother,
H. Patterson Fletcher of Anna Maria, FL; sister, Marcia Hardy

Mr. Sellers was born April 24, 1921, in Detroit, MI, the son
of William and Gladys Sellers.
He was retired, having been self-employed as the owner of a beauty
and gift shop. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Maggie Sellers; daughter, Jo Ann
Strauss; brothers, Herb Sellers, Harold Sellers and Wilbur Sellers;
grandchildren, Kelly Ann Debrincat and Michael Patrick Quinn;
and one great-grandchild, Nicholas Michael Debrincat.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Gladys Sellers;
and two sons, Kenneth Gary Sellers and Michael Allen Sellers.

Emile A. LaChance Sr., 74, of
Cincinnati, OH, formerly of Fairfield Glade, passed away Dec.

Mr. LaChance was born July 8, 1926, in Fall River, MA.
He retired in 1986 from General Foods Corporation after 38 years,
and was an active parishioner of St. Richard of Chichester Parish
in College Hill, OH. He was one of the original founders of the
GOP Club in Fairfield Glade and served as a Cumberland County
election commissioner.

two terms on the board of directors. She and her husband, Robert
Edward Poindexter, moved from Hopkinsville, KY, to Crossville

Levi Cottington of Crossville; brother, Auta Ladd of Hopkinsville;

Mr. Pippin was born March 6, 1916, in Overton County, TN, the
son of Asberry Loftis and Sina Vaughn Pippin.
He was a coal miner, and attended Slate Springs Missionary Baptist
Church.

both of Crossville, Debra Creighton of Nashville, TN, and Frances
Loftis of Rickman; sons, A.J. Pippin and Walter Pippin Jr., both

Mrs. Alexander was born Feb. 3, 1921, in Overton County, TN,
the daughter of H.O. and Lona Story.
She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Brown was born Sept. 21, 1919, in Cumberland County.
She was a school secretary at Crab Orchard Elementary School

Mr. Floyd was born April 14, 1912, in Cumberland County, the

Mr. McBride was born Sept. 3, 1938, in Kokomo, the son of Shelburn
and Pauline Gunnar McBride.
He was an engineer, and of the Protestant faith. He served in
the U.S. Marines between the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Mrs. Bacon was born Sept. 11, 1935, in Freeport, IL, the daughter
of Melvin and Olga Mielke Meyer.
She was a musician, teacher and a member of Fairfield Glade Community
Church. She was a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music and
taught music in the Midland Public Schools. She was a violinist
with the Midland Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Midland
String Trio. She helped organize the MSO Youth Honors Orchestra,
led a high school string quartet and taught violin privately.
She was music coordinator at Memorial Presbyterian Church and
served as children's choir director, bell choir director and
instrumental ensemble director there.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Bacon of Fairfield Glade;
daughter, Debra Anthony of Asheville, NC; sons, Douglas Bacon
of Sugarland, TX, David Bacon of Durham, NC, and Jeffrey Bacon
of Reno, NV; and three grandchildren.

William "Bill" Peterhansen
Jr., 71, of Crossville, passed away Dec. 3, 2000. Funeral services
will be conducted today, Dec. 6, at 1 p.m. at Crossville First
Christian Church, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. The Rev.
George Long will officiate.
Mr. Peterhansen was born May 14, 1929, in St. Paul, MN, the son
of William Sr. and Elva Peterhansen.
He retired from Babcock and Wilcox after 40 years of service.
He began his career as a helper and eventually became plant manager
of the Barberton, OH; Paris, TX; and West Point, MS, operations.
Throughout his career he represented his company in Asia, Europe
and Africa. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving
as sergeant. He was a member of the VFW No. 5025, Elks Lodge
No. 2751 and served as deputy sheriff of West Point.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dolores Peterhansen;
sons, William A. Peterhansen of Chicago, IL, Mark A. Peterhansen
of North Canton, OH, and Craig A. Peterhansen of Louisville,
KY; daughters-in-law, Barbara Peterhansen, Nancy Peterhansen
and Pamela Peterhansen; five grandchildren, William Oaks, Scott,

VOLNEY LEROY HASSLER
Volney LeRoy Hassler, 81, of
Crab Orchard, passed away Nov. 21, 2000, at Cumberland Medical
Center. No services are planned.
Mr. Hassler was born May 16, 1919, in Cumberland County, the
son of Rayburn and Ella Renfro Hassler.
He retired from the U.S. Army in July 1968 as a staff sergeant.
Survivors include two brothers, Troy Hassler of Ozone and Kenneth
"Pete" Hassler of Rockwood, TN; two sisters, Opal Cox
and Pauline Pelfrey, both of Ozone; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rayburn and Ella Hassler;
and two brothers, Lavern Hassler, who lost his life in World
War II, and J.E. Hassler.

JAMES WILLARD LUCAS SR.
James Willard Lucas Sr., 70,
of Fairfield Glade, passed away Nov. 27, 2000, at Cumberland
Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Nov. 30 from
the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres
Memory Gardens. Bro. Terry Barnwell officiated.
Mr. Lucas was born Sept. 20, 1930, in San Jose, CA, the son of
Media Willard and Erma Quinn Lucas.
He was retired from the military, having served in the U.S. Air
Force during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was also a U.S.
Postal Service employee, and a member of the Church of God of
Prophecy.
Survivors include his wife, Judith Lee Jenkins Lucas of Fairfield
Glade; son, James W. Lucas Jr. of Indiana, PA; daughters, Jane
Pirelli of Chicago, IL, and Joan Hibbs of Nashville, TN; sister,
Anna Mae Springer of Salisbury, NC; seven grandchildren; and
one great-granddaughter.
Pallbearers were Jim Hibbs, Tim Pirelli, Jerry Steltner, Roy
Meadows, Doyle Burgess and Tony Neely.

of God of Prophecy.

Frank Pugh, 96, of Monterey,
TN, passed away Nov. 30, 2000, at Cookeville Regional Medical
Center. Funeral services were conducted Dec. 3 from the chapel
of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with interment in Welch Memorial
Cemetery. Bro. Glen Goggins officiated.
Mr. Pugh was born Sept. 9, 1904, in Woody, TN, the son of William
J. and Clemmetine Copeland Pugh.
He was a retired millwright, and owned and operated Frank L.
Pugh Lumber Company in Monterey. He was a member of the Monterey
Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Roland and Jimmie
Mae Pugh of Monterey; brother, Jim Pugh of Monterey; three grandchildren,
Bobby Pugh, Rick Pugh and Jane Ann Powell; six great-grandchildren;
and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Sparks Pugh.

WALLACE LOGAN TABOR
Wallace Logan Tabor, 83, of
Crossville, passed away Nov. 27, 2000, at Cumberland Medical
Center. Funeral services were conducted Dec. 1 from the chapel
of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Fredonia Cemetery. The
Rev. Russell Honeycutt officiated.
Mr. Tabor was born Sept. 26, 1917, in Cumberland County, the
son of Wallace M. and Mildred Svoboda Tabor.
He was a farmer, and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his son, Richard W. Tabor of Washington, DC;
daughter, June Nokes of California; sisters, Gladys Hixson, Rozelle
Wood and Libby Kultau, all of Crossville, and Maxine Baisley
of Summerville, GA; brother, Herman Tabor of Crossville; and
four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Opal Ford Tabor.
Pallbearers were David Nokes, Ray Jackson, Vincent Tabor, Max
Carroll, Ron Kultau, Donnie Tabor and Greg Tabor.

CLARENCE WALLACE
Clarence Wallace, 86, of Monterey,
TN, passed away Dec. 2, 2000, at Cookeville Regional Medical
Center. Funeral services will be conducted today, Dec. 5, at
11 a.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home, with interment
to follow in Welch Memorial Cemetery. Dr. Martin Thielen will
officiate.
Mr. Wallace was born Feb. 26, 1914, in Overton County, TN, the
son of Enis and Mary Ledbetter Wallace.
He was a retired coal miner, and a member of the UMWA. He was
of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his daughters, Katherine Vaughn and Hazel Walker,
both of Monterey; half-sister, Mae Winski of New York, NY; half-brothers,
Bill Wallace and J.B. Wallace, both of Crossville, and Issac
Wallace of Naples, FL; four grandchildren, Ellen Wilson, Felecia
Yates, Johnny Walker and Brian Vaughn; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lila Floyd Wallace.

Marie Welch, 91, of Crossville,
passed away Nov. 28, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Nov.

Mrs. Welch was born June 8, 1909, in Cumberland County, the daughter
of William Isaac and Mary Bell Harper.
She was a homemaker.

stepdaughter, Wanda Smith of Crossville; sons, Hubert Lee Asberry
and Wilbur Lane Asberry, both of Dayton, OH; stepson, Bob Welch

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Welch; parents,

John Robert Ford, 48, of Crossville,
passed away Nov. 28, 2000. Funeral services will be announced

Mr. Ford was born March 21, 1952, in Detroit, MI, the son of
Robert Alexander and Winifred West Ford.
He was a truck driver.
Survivors include his mother, Winifred Ford of Crossville; daughter,

Russell Harris, 91, of Crossville,
passed away Nov. 29, 2000, at Cumberland Medical Center. Funeral

Mr. Harris was born Nov. 22, 1909, in Floyd County, KY, the son
of Edward and Nancy Gobel Harris.
He was a custodian.
Survivors include his sons, Donald Harris of Ypsilanti, MI, Adrian
Harris of Horton, MI, David Harris of Crossville, and Walker
Harris and Fred Harris, both of Bellville, MI; daughter, Jane
Tackett of Crossville; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren;

June Ellen Hyder, 62, of Crossville,
passed away Nov. 26, 2000, at Cumberland Medical Center. Funeral

Home, with burial in Slate Springs Cemetery. Bro. Johnny Reeves
Jr. and Bro. Lyle Ledbetter officiated, with special music by
Reba Reed and Lyle Ledbetter.
Mrs. Hyder was born June 23, 1938, in Cumberland County, the
daughter of Lawrence Lee and Lela Ermine Vanwinkle Lowe.
She had been employed in housekeeping at Holiday Inn, and was
of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her son, Eddie Hyder of Pearland, TX; daughter,
Patricia Grice of St. Petersburg, FL; sisters, Winifred Gibson,
Helen Eller and Dorothy Martin, all of Crossville; four grandchildren;
and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar "Ed"
Harvey Hyder; four sisters, Maria Lowe, Janie Lowe, Hazel Lowe
and Jo Anna Lowe; and two brothers, Jimmy Lowe and Tommy Lowe.

HELEN LOHELA MUNSON
Helen Lohela Munson, 91, of
Pleasant Hill, passed away Nov. 22, 2000, at Wharton Nursing
Home in Pleasant Hill. Memorial services were conducted Nov.
25 at Pleasant Hill Community Church, with the Rev. Ed Schneider
officiating.
Mrs. Munson was born Feb. 13, 1909, in Laurium, MI, the daughter
of Matt and Josephine Linna Lohela.
She graduated from Calumet (MI) High School in 1926, received
a teaching certificate from Michigan State Normal College, now
Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI, and taught school
in Mount Clemens, MI, for several years before earning a bachelor's
degree from the National College of Eduation in Evanston, IL.
She later taught school in Streator, IL.
Mrs. Munson was the author of a number of children's books and
for many years served as a national workshop leader and author
of church school curriculum material for the Congregational-United
Church of Christ. During the 1960s, she and her husband, Dr.
Frederick W. Munson, served as missionaries in India under the
Board for World Ministries of the United Church of Christ, primarily
at the Christian Mission Hospital in Madurai, South India. In
1968, the couple settled in Pleasant Hill, where Mrs. Munson
was active in the church and community.
Survivors include her sons, Bill Munson of Huntsville, AL, and
John Munson of Calumet, MI; brothers, John Lohela of Lake Worth,
FL, Arvo Lohela of Fayetteville, NC, and Ray Lohela of Detroit,
MI; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Frederick W. Munson.
