JEROME S. PATEFIELD
Jerome S. Patefield, 70, of
Fairfield Glade, passed away Aug. 26, 2000. Funeral services
were conducted Aug. 29 at Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church,
with Wayne Venson officiating.
Mr. Patefield was born Oct. 3, 1929, in Fort Atkinson, WI, the
son of Arthur and Bernice Patefield.
He was a troubleshooter for a power company.
Survivors include his wife, Zella Patefield; sons and daughters-in-law,
Rodney W. and Nancy Patefield of Hollie Springs, NC, Dr. Arthur
J. and Christine Patefield of Charlotte, NC, and Richard T. and
Terri Patefield of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, Patti
Lynn Patefield and Dr. Edward Haugen of Hayward, WI; 10 grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Bernice Patefield.

RICHARD ROBERT SEPERICH
Richard Robert Seperich, 74,
of Fairfield Glade, passed away Aug. 25, 2000, in Cumberland
Medical Center. Services will be held at a later date.
Mr. Seperich was born April 3, 1926, in Hinsdale, IL, the son
of George and Elizabeth Kufrin Seperich.
He was employed by National Tea Food Stores in Illinois after
serving in the U.S. Army. He was a store manager for Kroger Co.
in several stores in and around the Chicago area. In 1972 he
started his own business, Dick's Painting and Minor Repairs,
from which he retired in 1988, when he moved with his wife Yvonne
to Fairfield Glade. He was a member of Lombard (IL) Chamber of
Commerce and Industry, Lombard Rotary Club, First United Methodist
Church of Lombard and Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church,
and was secretary of Kensington Woods Townhouse Association from
1997-Õ99.
Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Maisey Seperich of Fairfield
Glade; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Lee and Doris Seperich,
Scott Richard and Janie Seperich and Randall Alan and Kaylene
Seperich, all of Colorado; sister, Rose Seperich Hopkins of Minnesota;
and five grandchildren, Kira, Annie, Shad, Devon and Cole Seperich,
all of Colorado.
The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer
Society or the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church Endowment
Fund.

Rosie Tays, 67, of Crossville,
passed away Aug. 29, 2000, at Country Place Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m.
from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with interment
to follow in Whittaker Cemetery. The Rev. Bobby Floyd will officiate.
Visitation will be tonight, Aug. 30, from 6 to 9 at the funeral
home.
Mrs. Tays was born April 9, 1933, in Monterey, the daughter of
the late Dorton Stamps and Anna Tays Wallace.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her sister, Mae Winski of New York City, NY;
and three brothers, Bill Wallace and J.B. Wallace, both of Crossville,
and Issac Wallace of Naples, FL.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Wiggins and
Stella Young.

WILLODEAN VADEN OFFICER
Willodean Vaden Officer, 71,
of Monterey, TN, passed away Aug. 25, 2000, at Cookeville Regional
Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 28 from
the chapel of Horner Funeral Home in Monterey, with burial in
Welch Memorial Cemetery. Bro. DeWitt Sampley and Bro. Barry Purser
officiated.
Mrs. Officer was born Dec. 29, 1928, in Monterey, the daughter
of the late Athie and Lena Smith Vaden.
She was a graduate of Monterey High School, and Knoxville General
Hospital as a registered nurse. She worked at the Monterey Hospital,
Cumberland Medical Center and Standing Stone Health Care Center.
She was a member of Eastern Star, Civitan Club, Monterey VFW
Ladies Auxiliary and the Monterey Food Bank. She was a board
member of the Monterey Standing Stone Health Care Center after
her retirement. She was a member of Monterey First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Walton Officer of Monterey; brothers
and sisters-in-law, Billy Earl and Shirley Vaden of Algood, TN,
Calvin and Virginia Vaden of Battle Creek, MI, Kenneth and Elise
Vaden, Mert and Ann Vaden and George Vaden, all of Monterey;
and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Geneva Miller; and two
brothers, Paul Eugene "Boob" Vaden and Bobby Vaden.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Miller Jr., Chris Vaden, Paul Vaden, Kenneth
Vaden, David Varney and Steve Van DeVoorde.

EDWARD CARMACK ROGERS
Edward Carmack Rogers, 89, of
Crossville, passed away Aug. 26, 2000. A memorial service will
be conducted today, Aug. 29, at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Bilbrey
Funeral Home.
Visitation will be today at the funeral home, from noon until
time of service.
Mr. Rogers was born Feb. 3, 1911, near Gainesboro, TN, the son
of James B. and Amanda Bailey Rogers.
He attended Cumberland Mountain School, where he met his future
wife, MaryBelle McCormick, and graduated valedictorian of his
class in 1934.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1938 and retired as a lieutenant colonel
in 1958, having served at many posts in this country and abroad,
including the Philippines; Brazil; Germany; Fort Meade, MD; Fort
Knox, KY; and Albuquerque, NM.
Following his retirement, Mr. Rogers worked as a real estate
agent in Albuquerque. He served in the diplomatic corps of the
U.S. State Department at the U.S. Agency of International Development
of Currency Exchange in Paris, France and Bonn, Germany. He later
worked as a high school history teacher in Cumberland County.
Afterward he was employed with the U.S. State Department in Vietnam,
and as a liaison for the U.S. Army in Saudi Arabia.
In 1999, he joined the Crossville Religious Society of Friends
(Quakers).
Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Jackson of Gainesboro
and Bonnell Biggers of Red Boiling Springs, TN; sons and daughters-in-law,
Toby and Judy Rogers and Philip and Mary Ruth Rogers; daughter
and son-in-law, Jan and Joe Burns; daughter, Pamela Rogers; and
eight grandchildren, Jesse and Sarah Grace Rogers, Robert and
James Rogers, Amanda and Matthew Burns, Mary Carmen Brown and
Allison Schwab.

Elizabeth Rose Cox, 84, of Terre
Haute, IN, passed away Aug. 22, 2000, in Terre Haute Regional
Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted today, Aug. 25,
at 11 a.m. from the chapel of DeBaun Funeral Home in Terre Haute,
with burial in Roselawn Memorial Park. Pastor Hoyte Wilhelm of
Wooster, OH, will officiate.
Mrs. Cox was born June 3, 1916, in Terre Haute, the daughter
of Herman Christian Roesch and Mary Jane Thomas.
She was a Glas-Col mantle maker, and a member of Eastern Star,
Order of Cauldren, and the Maryland Community Home Ec. Club.
Survivors include her daughters, Elizabeth "Ellen"
Cummings of Fairfield Glade, Rose Mary McDowell of Elkhart, IN,
and Suzanne "Suzie" Hendrix of Terre Haute; half-sisters,
Patricia Spahn and Barbara Sheldon; eight grandchilden, Dallas
D. "Pete" Cummings Jr., Barbara Sopher, Teresa Wilhelm,
Elizabeth Vander Molen, Laura McDowell, Randall McDowell, Kimberly
Sappington and Scott Hendrix; 15 great-grandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Randal Cox.

Denise and Jimmy Edwards.

Mrs. Roach was born Nov. 27, 1899, in Putnam County, TN.

Thomas "Tommy" Michael
Hale III, 34, of Huntsville, AL, formerly of Crossville, passed
away Aug. 18, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 21 from
the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville
City Cemetery. The Rev. Ron McKay officiated, with special music
by Ann Stout, Vicky Tabor, Alton Tabor and Charlotte Tabor.
Mr. Hale was born Feb. 17, 1966, in Cumberland County, the son
of Thomas Michael Hale Jr. and Eula Mae Tabor Hale.
He was a self-employed owner of Tucker Golf, and a member of
Ford's Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Vadah Marie Hale of Huntsville;
father, Thomas Michael Hale Jr. of Crossville; grandmother, Kathryn
Tabor of Crossville; sister and brother-in-law, Gail and Keith
Lowe of Huntsville; niece, Sarah Jane Lowe of Huntsville; and
nephew and namesake, William Thomas Lowe of Huntsville.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eula Mae Tabor Hale;
grandmother, Martha Jane Kemmer Hale; and grandfathers, Thomas
Michael Hale Sr. and Dallas Tabor.

Paul F. Newcome, 82, of Crossville,
passed away Aug. 21, 2000, in Fort Sanders Parkwest Hospital
in Knoxville, TN. Funeral services will be conducted tonight,

TN, with the Rev. Steve Foster officiating. Graveside services
and interment will be Aug. 24 at 11 a.m. in Roane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Newcome was born June 22, 1918, in Jefferson, TN, the son
of Samuel and Lela Newcome.
He was retired from Burlington Industries with 43 years of service,
and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member
of the First Baptist Church of Rockwood, the American Legion,
Rockwood Lodge No. 403 F&AM, and Alhambra Shrine and Scottish
Rite, Chattanooga, TN.
Survivors include his wife, Lillie W. Newcome of Crossville;
daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Harold White and Roma
and Glen White, all of Rockwood; son, Ronald Newcome of Richmond,
VA; son and daughter-in-law, Freddie and Robin Bowling of Richmond;
stepdaughters, Cynthia Pogue and her husband Rusty of Rockwood
and Amy Johns and her husband Roger of Harriman, TN; stepson,

Mrs. Paulson was born June 12, 1942, in Pauls Valley, OK, the

Gene Farris, 67, of Crossville,
passed away Aug. 15, 2000, in Cumberland Medical Center. Funeral

Mr. Farris was born July 25, 1933, in Cumberland County, the
son of Bert and Virgie Farris.

JAMES ANDREWS HALVERSTADT
James Andrews Halverstadt, 87,
of Nashville, TN, passed away Aug. 12, 2000, at Richland Place
in Nashville. A memorial service was held Aug. 18 at Second Presbyterian
Church in Nashville.
Mr. Halverstadt was born in Oct. 21, 1912 in Pittsburgh, PA,
the son of Herbert and Gertrude Halverstadt.
He was a graduate of Darlington School in Darlington, SC; Davidson
College in Davidson, NC; and Columbia Theological Seminary in
Decatur, GA. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II,
reaching the rank of lieutenant commander. He served as business
manager and legal representative of the American Presbyterian
Congo Mission from 1946 to 1966 in the then-Belgian Congo. He
returned to Nashville where he held the position of business
manager of the Presbyterian Board of World Missions of the Presbyterian
Church U.S. from 1966 until his retirement in 1974. He was an
elder of the Second Presbyterian Church in Nashville, and a founding
trustee of the Herbert and Gertrude Halverstadt Charitable Foundation.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Bette" Weaver
Evans Halverstadt of Nashville, formerly of Crossville; son,
the Rev. Dr. Hugh Halverstadt of Chicago, IL; grandsons, Peter
Breen Halverstadt and David Andrews Halverstadt, both of Nashville;
six stepchildren, Jacqueline W. Evans Elmore of DeRossett, TN,
Thomas P. Evans of Knoxville, TN, Anna R. Evans Beesley and Arthur
Cope Evans, both of Crossville, David L. Evans of Gainesville,
FL, and Bruce E. Evans of Brookeville, MD; and 11 stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Gertrude
Halverstadt; his first wife, Charline Fleece Halverstadt; and
a brother, Albert Nast Halverstadt.

Mr. Horrigan was born May 22, 1932, in Passaic, NJ, the son of
Patrick and Lillian Horrigan.
He was a purchasing agent for Ford Motor Co., and was a veteran
of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Horrigan of Fairfield Glade;
daughters, Catherine Breen of Sylvania, OH, and Joanne Horrigan

Ms. Meeks was born Sept. 20, 1961, in Cumberland County, the

Mrs. Phillips was born March 16, 1928, in Cumberland County,
the daughter of John and Annie Edwards Reed.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Stanley St. Church of God
of Prophecy.

Linda Phillips of Crossville; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Danny Phillips.

Lela Whittenburg Smith, 93,
of the Bakers Crossroads community, passed away Aug. 15, 2000
in Cumberland Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted

Rev. Delmar McCowen officiated.
Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 15, 1906, in Pickett County, TN, the
daughter of Pierce and Alta Conaster Whittenburg.
She was a retired merchant and homemaker, and a member of Crossville
First Freewill Baptist Church.

Clyde Louise Leynes Boyles,
88, of Gainesville, FL, passed away Aug. 11, 2000. Graveside
funeral services were conducted Aug. 15 at Laurel Hill Cemetery
in Archer, FL.
Mrs. Boyles was born Oct. 10, 1911, in Archer, and was a lifelong
resident of Gainesville.
She was a teacher at several one-room schoolhouses throughout
Florida, including Westville and LaCrosse, FL. She taught at
the Archer School and Stephen Foster Elementary School for 30
years before retiring. She attended Florida State College for
Women and received her teaching certificate; she also received
a degree in education from the University of Florida. She was
a member of the American Business Women's Association, and volunteered
as one of the "Pink Ladies" at Alachua General Hospital
for 15 years. She was a charter member of the Crevasses of Cedar
Key chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and a
member and trustee of Highlands Presbyterian Church in Gainesville.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Anne Boyles Irvin of Crossville;
son and daughter-in-law, Shelton and Beth Boyles of Gainesville;
three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Drew Carlos Boyles.

Robert J. Boncher, 39, of Crossville,
passed away July 25, 2000. He will be buried in Kentucky, next
to his two sons.
Mr. Boncher was born Oct. 24, 1960, in Madison, WI, the son of
Robert W. and Madonna Boncher.
He was a custodian at Glen L. Martin Elementary School and worked
part-time as a farmer. He was a student at Roane State Community
College.

the Cumberland Cove community near Monterey, TN, passed away
Aug. 8, 2000, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Funeral

Funeral Home in Miami, FL, with entombment to follow in Woodlawn
Park South Cemetery in Miami.
Mr. Hinton was born Oct. 27, 1930, in Kingston, OH, the son of
the late Harold and Florence Lively Hinton.
He was a retired commercial airline pilot with Eastern Airlines
and a member of the Retired Eastern Airlines Pilots Association.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a member
of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Parish in Miami and attended St.
Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Cookeville, TN. He was an avid
golfer and a member of the Mountain Ridge Golf Club.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, JoAnne Cave Hinton; three
daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Christopher Yates of
Del Ray Beach, FL, Jeanne and Stephen Siegel and Lora and Stephen

Mrs. Powers was born March 17, 1927, in Viroqua, WI, the daughter
of Henry and Katherine Merrill Davis.
She was an office manager, and a member of the Order of Eastern
Star, the New Generation Dance Club, the Glade Gliders and the
Fairfield Glade Ladies Club.

Ruth DeLeonard, 81, of Fairfield
Glade, passed away Aug. 3, 2000, in Cumberland Medical Center.

will officiate.
Ms. DeLeonard was born Jan. 30, 1919, in Klamath Falls, OR.
She was a homemaker.

Lyle Stephen Potter Sr., of
Crossville, passed away Aug. 1, 2000, in Cumberland Medical Center.
Mr. Potter was born June 1, 1941, in Hinkley, NY, the son of
William and Alice Hughes Potter.
He was an orderly for Marcy State Hospital, and of the Protestant
faith.

Jack Floyd, 61, of Monterey,
TN, passed away Aug. 1, 2000, at Cumberland Medical Center. Funeral
services will be conducted today, Aug. 4, at 1 p.m. from the
chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with interment in Welch
Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Bobby Floyd will officiate.
Mr. Floyd was born March 11, 1939, to the late Tommie and Susie
Enochs Floyd.
He was a roofer.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Kinney Floyd of Monterey; two
stepsons, Michael Kinney of Peoria, IL, and James Gresham of
Aguana, Guam; four sisters, Helen Stidham of Cookeville, TN,

Mrs. Hughes was born March 30, 1929, in Dayton, OH, the daughter
of Greenberry and Callie Welch Braddam.
She was a homemaker, and of the Baptist faith. She attended Memorial
Baptist Church.

son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Vicki Hughes of Galena, OH;

Mrs. Vaughn was born April 5, 1921, in Cookeville, the daughter
of Emery and Mallie Welch Pippin.
She was a homemaker, and she was a member of Pippin Church of
Christ.

daughter and son-in-law, Maxine and Charles Frasier of Cookeville;
five sisters, Mintie Newcomer and Hazel Jackson, both of Michigan,
Mamie Chaffin of Baxter, TN, and Maudie Farris and Margie Dyer,
both of Cookeville; grandsons, Robert J. Frasier and his wife

Margaret A. Widener, 65, of

Mrs. Widener was born May 8, 1935, in Knox County, TN, the daughter
of Oscar and Katherine Baker.

TN, and Ramona Young and Marlene Madden, both of Sparta, TN;

April Jeannette Lindsey, 16,
of Monterey, TN, passed away July 29, 2000, at Erlanger Medical
Center in Chattanooga, TN. Funeral services were conducted Aug.

Cemetery. Dr. Martin Thielen officiated.
Miss Lindsey was born April 26, 1984, in Cookeville, TN, the
daughter of Marilyn Gay Looper Lindsey and Donald Neal Lindsey.
She would have been a junior this fall at Cumberland County High
School, where she played flute in the CCHS Marching Band. She
attended Crossville and Monterey United Methodist churches. She
was a volunteer with the Temporary Shelter in Crossville, active
in Cumberland County 4-H and was employed at Crossville Ponderosa
and Bright Futures Inc.
Survivors include her mother, Marilyn Gay Looper Lindsey of Monterey;
father, Donald Neal Lindsey of Cookeville; sister, Melanie Lindsey,
and brother, Jacob Lindsey, both of Monterey; maternal grandparents,
G.O. (Gaynol) and Dorothy Looper of Monterey; and paternal grandparents,
Thurman and Illa Lindsey of Cookeville.

Mr. Groseclose was born June 5, 1924, in New Market, TN, the
