Dancers stage classic fairy tale

"Hansel and Gretel" ballet February 9-10 at Milliken Auditorium

The Northwest Michigan Ballet Theatre will present the full-length ballet "Hansel and Gretel” February 9 and 10 at the Dennos Museum Center's Milliken Auditorium. The youth ballet company will also travel to Benzie Central High School Auditorium on Saturday, February 16, and the Northport Community Arts Center on Saturday, February 23.

Based on the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale, two Bavarian children neglect their chores and are sent by their mother into the forest to collect berries for supper. Lost deep in the spooky forest, they encounter the Sleep Fairy, who comforts their fears, Guardian Angels who watch over their slumber and a Dew Fairy who wakes them to a new day. Enticed by a gingerbread house they discover in their wanderings, they are trapped by a wicked witch. Hansel and Gretel outwit the witch and thrust her into the oven before she can bake them.

"Hansel & Gretel” features original choreography by Thomas Morrell, artistic director of the Northwest Michigan Ballet Theatre, with music from the Engelbert Humperdinck opera score of the same name. The cast of 23 dancers includes area students ages 10-18 as well as five adults in guest roles.

Performance times at the Milliken are 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 9, and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 10. The Benzie Central and Northport shows are both at 7 p.m. General admission tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under and seniors. They may be purchased at Ballet Etc. Dance Institute, 869 Robinwood Court in Traverse City, or at the door.

A group rate for advanced purchases of 20 or more tickets allows savings of $2 per ticket and is available for all shows. This would mean $10 for adults and $6 for children and seniors. Schools, churches, clubs and other groups are encouraged to use this special pricing.
