Used sporting equipment and prom dresses, toys and jewelry were all up for sale Saturday as members of Traverse City Central High School's orchestra held a Spring Cleaning Sale to raise funds for their visit to the Staten Island Music Festival next month.
The orchestra's 58 members will travel to New York where they will be among nine groups - three of which are orchestras - who will perform at the Staten Island Festival. Central's orchestra was chosen for the event by submitting audition tapes and Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association festival scores along with an application.
While in New York, the group also plans to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero. They also hope to take in a Broadway play.
"It's a great opportunity for the kids, we are just thrilled to have been chosen. We plan to make the most of the trip," said orchestra director, Ellen Boyer.
"Even though we have had a great deal of support and have raised about $500 today, our needs are still great," Boyer said.
Anyone who would like to contribute to the orchestra's travel fund can contact Boyer at 933-3663 or the Central High School office at 933-3500.
