Barn Bash big on farm life

Photos special to the Record-Eagle/Meegan Reid
Michael Pippin of Lake Ann works on caning a rocking chair with flat-reed inside the barn at the Grand Traverse Commons. Pippin has been rushing and caning chairs for the past 20 years. Caning/rushing is weaving a seat and sometimes a back of a chair with flexible woody material.

Event offers horse-drawn wagon rides,
craft work and square dancing

Donna Almetera of Suttons Bay spins Merino Wool while (left to right) Cedar, 3, Acacia, 6, and mom Sheryl Wilis watch. The family just moved to Traverse City from Kansas and was taking part in the Barn Bash at the Commons on Saturday.

Seven-year-old Marie Laird of Traverse City crawls through the tall grass pretending to be a lion while visiting the barns with her family during Barn Bash on Saturday.

Cal Spangler drives his Belgian horses Jim and Tim as he demonstrates an old style plow in front of the barns at the Grand Traverse Commons.

Taking a ride on the horse-drawn carriage (left to right) Jane Kendra with son Noah, 3, Linda Hepler with grandson Joseph Sisco, 1, and Russ Hepler brave the cold wind during the Barn Bash at the Grand Traverse Commons on Saturday. Rolling Centuries Farm, which sponsored the second annual Barn Bash, provides free events on the grounds of the old state hospital barns. Wagon rides and other individual options, however, require tickets to help defray event costs.
