Derby tests skills of area scouts

Scenic Trails Klondike Derby features
fire building, first aid and winter survival stations


Gator Patrol from Traverse City Troop 27 treats a victim of a slow blower accident by bandaging his hand and applying pleasure to control bleeding. The Klondike Derby station featured five different accident scenarios that required scouts to use a variety of first aid skills.


Cobra Patrol from Interlochen Troop 20 takes first place in their sled race Saturday at the Scenic Trails Council South District Klondike Derby held at the Lake Ann Baptist Camp. The outdoor scouting adventure featured eight event stations including fire building, first aid and wilderness survival.


Several Klondike Derby stations required scouts to identify, tie and tell the uses of knots and lashings.

Huffing and puffing, these scouts hope that where there is smoke, there will be fire from steel wool and flint. Patrols had to start a blaze that would boil water in a tin cup at the fire building station.
