Northwestern Michigan College — Christina Carlson, Audrey Goense and Annalisa Grover of Grand Traverse County have been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2002 semester.

Albion College, Albion, Mich. — Tyler Alpers, son of Timothy Alpers and Susanne Muha of Traverse City, is a member of the football team and a senior at Albion College. He is a graduate of Traverse City West Senior High.

Kettering University, Flint, Mich. — Keith Nielson of Traverse City has been awarded a bachelor of mechanical engineering degree.

Central Michigan University — Andrew Wares of Traverse City has been named to the summer session honors list.

Ball State University, Muncie, Ind. — Kira Olds, daughter of Orlo and Connie Olds of Grawn, has accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a campus ceremony this fall.

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is a highly selective, national, non-profit honors organization. Founded in 1994, NSCS recognizes first and second year undergraduate students who excel academically.

Western Michigan University — Michael Bonkoski, Laura Crain and Estey Demerchant are members of the academically talented group of high school students that were selected by Western Michigan University to receive Board of Trustees Scholarships and WMU Academic Scholarships if they enroll at the University this fall.

The awards are offered through WMU’s Medallion Scholarship Program competition, which takes place on campus each February. This year’s recipients were named in August from among 823 leading high school seniors from 13 states who participated in the winter 2002 competition.

The event included essay writing and group problem-solving activities for students as well as information sessions for their parents. To be invited to compete, students had to apply to WMU by December 31 and have a high school grade point average of at least 3.8 and an ACT score of at least 25. WMU Academic Scholarships are valued at $4,800 over four years.

Bonkoski, son of Leroy and Deborah Bonkoski, is a graduate of Traverse City West High School. Crain, daughter of Terry and Patricia Crain, is a graduate of Traverse City Central High School. Demerchant is also a TC Central graduate.

Carleton College, Northfield, Minn.— Justin Dykstra of Traverse City will join the class of 2006 with the start of New Student Week on Wednesday, September 11. Dykstra is the son of Vickie Dykstra and David Dykstra of Traverse City. He is a graduate of Traverse City Senior High School.


Erica Clark

Central Michigan University — Erica Clark of Traverse City is among 22 of the state’s top high school students who have accepted Centralis Scholar Awards to attend Central Michigan University. The award is valued at $12,000. CMU selects winners based on high school grades, standardized test scores, interviews, leadership qualities and a competitive exam.

Clark is the daughter of Bruce and Sue Clark of Traverse City and is a graduate of Traverse City West Senior High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society and received the MEAP Merit Award, DAR Good Citizen Award and the Academic Achievement Award.

Michigan Tech University, Houghton, Mich. — Christy Gray, daughter of Elizabeth and Jim Gray of Traverse City, Caitlan Smith, daughter of Holly and Jerome Smith of Suttons Bay and Rod Kuncaitis of Williamsburg recently attended the Summer Youth Program (SYP) at Michigan Tech University.

Students taking part in SYP can choose to attend one of over sixty different week-long explorations in engineering; math, science, and technology; computers; outdoors and ecology; society and culture and fine, performing and technical arts. Participants investigate various careers and academic areas through workshops, laboratory activities, field trips and meetings with professionals in their area of interest. Students are also given the chance to experience a taste of college life.

Gray and Smith are juniors at Traverse City Central High School, Kuncaitis is a seventh grader at Harbor Springs Middle School.
