Saying so long to summer

While the calendar may say September 23, for many Labor Day weekend is the unofficial end of summer — and supervised swimming at many beaches.


A lone swimmer takes to the water Sunday evening for one last dip as the sun sets on Grand Traverse Bay and the waning days of summer.


Footprints in the sand await the inevitable waves that will wash away their existence as the summer tides slowly turn to autumn.
