Students standout at MIPA

TC schools take home 63 awards

      High school and junior high journalism students from around the state gathered in Lansing last week for the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association competition and award ceremony. Traverse City Central High School, West High School and East Junior High School brought home an impressive 63 awards.
      "The Occidentalist," West Senior High's newspaper, received the Spartan Award, the highest award given by MIPA. In addition, the following students received individual awards:
      - Editor-in-chief, Amy Rushlow - All-State Journalist Award, first place for feature column writing, third-place for in-depth feature writing and an honorable mention for news analysis writing.
      - Mallory Brems - Second place for human interest feature writing and sports news writing
      - Jenny Charlson - Second place for sports news writing
      - Jenn Butterfield - Honorable mention for informative feature writing
      - John Gwillim - First place for news photography and honorable mention for sports photography
      - Luke Randall - Third place for editorial cartoon
      Central High School's yearbook received an Excellence Award while the newspaper, "Black and Gold," received an excellence award. Individual awards were presented to:
      - Lindsey Sedlar - Honorable mention for ads and opinion column
      - Danielle Killgore - Honorable mention for sports column
      - Forrest Karbowski - Honorable mention for opinion page layout
      - Kevin Hoover - Honorable mention for cartoon
      - Heather D'Aquila - Honorable mention for news story
      "Told in Black and Gold," the student newspaper at East Junior High, received seven staff awards in addition to 23 individual awards including:
      - Anna Egbert - First place for informative feature, news analysis and editorial and one second place award
      - Emmy Parsons - First place for sports feature and two second place awards
      - Mairi Ferguson - First place for review
      - Maggie Perkins - First place for sports column and informative graphic
      - Amanda Helm - First place for news story
      - Shannon Lowe - First place and second place individual awards
      - Mariola Power - Two second place individual awards
      - Rachel Cravit - Two second place individual awards
      - Alana Zachow - First place for editorial cartoon, one second place and one third place award
      - Annie Otwell - First place for human interest feature
      - Christie Teliin - First place for sports news, one third place award
      The East Junior High yearbook received 14 awards including a first place for people, body copy and theme development. Individual awards were given to:
      - Claire Gibbons - Honorable mention for layout
      - Alex Raphael - Honorable mention for layout
      - Kristina Adair - Honorable award for yearbook writing
