Young artists create calendar pages

Calendar fund-raiser for Children's Guidance Center

By LISA PERKINS

The Children's Guidance Center of Traverse City helps children that live in local neighborhoods and attend local schools, so that is where they sought artists for their 2002 Child Guidance Center Art Calendar.
The calendar features 12 unique seasonal works of art created by children from northern Michigan. More than 80 entries were submitted. The artists, ranging in age from second-graders to seniors in high school, created a wide variety of designs- from crayon drawings to abstract paintings. Featured artists receive a $25 savings bond.
The proceeds from the calendar will benefit two CGC programs: Teaching-Family Group Homes and Crisis Respite.
Teaching-Family Group Homes allow children to live in a home with full-time trained Teaching-Parents who help them work toward goals for school, home and community in a supportive environment. The Teaching-Parents work with the natural parents to help the eventual transition back home, where possible.
Crisis Respite provides immediate intervention by specially trained crisis teams when a home situation escalates to a dangerous level. These highly trained professionals offer families immediate respite from a potentially volatile situation.
Calendars are available for $10 at the following locations:
      - Edson Farms Natural Foods
      - Belstone Gallery
      - DeYoung's
      - Holiday Traditions at the Grand Traverse Mall
      - Mapleton Grocery Co.
