Saturday marked the kick start of a Women's Resource Center's trademark event- the Harley- Davidson raffle, this year featuring a 2002 "Spirit of Freedom" Fatboy FLSTF. The public was invited to view the motorcycle and purchase a ticket during a Preview Party at the North Peak Brewing Company.
"We have already sold 30 tickets, it was great to have the visibility," said Carmen Slendak, Director of Development and Volunteer Services for the Women's Resource Center.
"The kick-off went very well, we hope to be able to do this again next year."
The "one-of-a-kind" customized bike, courtesy of Classic Motor Sports, features limited edition numbered paint, a fully chromed exterior and special patriotic emblems and accessories. The motorcycle will be on display at local businesses until the drawing in February. Bill Marsh Auto will showcase the bike through the end of the week when it will be moved to Classic Motor Sports until the end of the month.
Tickets for the raffle are $100 each or three for $200 and are available by calling 800-554-4WRC. Only 900 tickets will be sold. A $15,000 cash option is also available to the winner.
With the Harley-Davidson raffle underway, the 2002 "America Rocks" Extravaganza can't be far behind. The event, which will take place on February 23 at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa Governor's Hall, will feature a gourmet dinner, live entertainment by Paul Revere and the Raiders, a silent auction with more than 400 items, a live auction featuring a few select items and the announcement of the winner of the Harley-Davidson raffle.
"I cannot think of a better way to support our community, while at the same time having a wonderful evening of gourmet food, outstanding entertainment and fun," said Nancy Pishney, Extravaganza 2002 chair.
Last year the Extravaganza netted more than $110,000 for victims of domestic and sexual violence in the Grand Traverse Area.
Proceeds from this year's event will support the Women's Resource Center in providing emergency and transitional housing, advocacy, education and counseling to hundreds of families. The Center began in 1975 as a grass roots-effort to help women and to raise community awareness about domestic and sexual violence.
Each year the Women's Resource Center serves more than 1,500 new clients- women, men and children-seeking assistance for the first time.
