Women's Resource Center store doubles space with move

Staff and volunteers have been working countless hours getting the new location of the Women's Resource Center Thrift Shoppe ready to open. With a goal of opening today, late nights stocking shelves were a must.
After four years in their former Garfield Avenue location, the Thrift Shoppe has moved to 1719 S. Garfield Avenue- just next door, in the former Jo-Ann Fabrics building. The move doubles the size of the store and will allow for a larger inventory, including more furniture.
The Thrift Shoppe stocks everything from clothing to household goods and furniture, all coming from donations. While all items are for sale, an average of $6,000 in goods are given away each month to local residents who are in need.
"Women in shelters are our first priority," said store manager Carol Rose. "Sometimes they don't have any clothes for themselves and their children. When they are able to move out of the shelter, we can help them furnish a whole house."
The store offers help to anyone in need, no questions asked.
"I like the fact that we don't ask for proof of income and make people go through all of that, for the most part if someone asks for something, they really need it," Rose said.
As always, the store takes donations of just about anything, except large appliances. Men's clothing and household goods are always in demand and there are fewer donations of them than women's and children's clothing.
"I often get asked if men can shop in the store, and the answer is absolutely yes, everyone is welcome," Rose noted.
The Women's Resource Center Thrift Store is open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday and accepts donations from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
