Schools win state journalism awards

Before the day began, after the day was over, or even outside of school all together, you could always find them. School journalists. Working on stories, taking photos, discussing ideas, goofing around, and generating a sense of camaraderie, these students are able to submit their work every year to the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA).
When MIPA met in April for their annual Spring Conference, the usual submissions went in. However, the Grand Traverse area students did exceptionally well this year, especially the Traverse City Central High School Black and Gold editor, Jessica Hulett.
With three awards credited to her in MIPA, Hulett also submitted a portfolio of work to be considered by the organization. She has been recognized as part of the 2000 Student Journalist All-State Staff, an honor bestowed on only twelve people in the state.
"I've done this for a long time and I'd like to think I know what I'm doing. I was hopeful, but I guess I wasn't necessarily expecting it. When I got it I was pretty excited."
Aside from Hulett, many other students in the area received awards. Students from Traverse City East Junior High School, Central High School, and West Senior High School were all honored at the state conference.
