Many are
unknowingly suffering
from low
testosterone levels
The Volonte clinic recently
opened in Kokomo is creating a
path toward wellness for men
with low testosterone.
The new clinic was borne from
a p e r s on a l s t r u g g l e Kym
Flock-Mennen and her husband
experienced eight years ago.
“My husband was diagnosed
with low testosterone, and we
couldn’t find a physician to treat
him,” she said. “Everyone kept
saying low testosterone was nor-
mal for his age of 48, so why
wasn’t there treatment readily
available?”
But now, thanks to the couple’s
investment in the community,
convenient access to that treat-
ment is now available in Kokomo
as well as in Indianapolis and
Lafayette. The couple is planning
to open additional clinics in Indi-
ana, Kym Flock-Mennen said.
She has found that the symp-
toms of low levels of testosterone
often go unnoticed by the patient
themselves.
“Many men suffer from low
levels of testosterone and don’t
realize it,” she said. “We’ll regu-
larly have a wife or girlfriend call
in and say their significant other
is hitting the La-Z-Boy as soon as
they get home from work and
that’s where they stay for the rest
of the evening.”
This level of fatigue is one of
many warning signs of low tes-
tosterone, she said.
“When your testosterone is re-
ally low, the fatigue is over-
whelming,” she said. “They don’t
feel like doing anything.”
Other signs to look for include
loss of muscle mass, mood
swings, decreased sex drive, de-
pression and “brain fog.”
As men age, testosterone levels
naturally begin to decline, losing
up to 2 percent each year after
the age of 30. And though symp-
toms come on gradually, they
can have major implications for
your daily life.
Men who suffer from low tes-
tosterone shouldn’t feel alone.
It’s estimated that one in 10 men
in the United States has low tes-
tosterone. After World War II,
the average man’s testosterone
level was 750. Today, it’s 350.
But Volonte is making a differ-
ence for the men they serve.
They’ve assisted hundreds of cli-
ents diagnose their low testoster-
one levels and treat them
through testosterone replace-
ment therapy.
The diagnosis process is quick
and easy, Flock-Mennen said.
It’s also free and there’s no need
to make an appointment for a
free testosterone screening.
Clients can walk in and get a
quick blood draw taken and ex-
pect results the following busi-
ness day. Those with results that
show a low level of testosterone
will meet with Flock-Mennen to
go over treatment plans.
Treatment includes weekly in-
jections, regular lab work and
visits with a Nurse Practitioner.
Included in the treatment plan
lab work is testosterone, estra-
diol, FSH, LH, PSA, TSH, CMP,
CBC, Lipid panel and Vitamin D.
“Once your testosterone levels
are low, they will always be low
unless you get treatment,” she
said. “And about four months into
that treatment you will start to
feel a signficant difference. You’ll
have more energy and have more
of a wellness feeling overall.”
The clinic strives to make the
treatment process as convenient
as possible. There’s no need to
make an appointment for weekly
injections or the lab work. Walk-
ins are accepted any time during
business hours. Volonte accepts
most insurance plans and also
has a cash price for its services
for those not covered.
Important to note, Flock-Men-
nen says, clients receive HCG
(human chorionic gonado-
tropin) therapy each time they
receive a testosterone injection.
“It simply tells your body to not
stop producing its own natural
testosterone,” she said. “It’s an
important part of the therapy.”
Volonte also offers a weight-
loss program for both men and
women, as well as Vitamin B12
and D injections.
“Seventy percent of people in
the Midwest have a Vitamin D
deficiency,” Flock-Mennen said.
“Volonte can test for and treat
that deficiency.”
The Kokomo Volonte clinic is
open Monday and Thursday
from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday
and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 6
p.m., and closed Friday, Satur-
day and Sunday. Kokomo clients
can also visit the Lafayette clinic
for their weekly injection. The
hours are the same, with the La-
fayette location also open on
Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon.
