VEC Drops Underground Charges

Changes to Volunteer Electric Cooperative's underground construction and meter base policies will affect members building new homes or developing subdivisions.

As of Feb. 1, VEC will not charge for the installation of underground primary and secondary service. VEC will provide at no cost to the customer secondary service (single-phase up to 400 amps) for a distance of up to 200 feet. Because of power quality considerations, VEC does not recommend secondary service spans longer than 200 feet.

Underground primary (7.2 kV or 14.4kV, maximum 400 amps) is available at no charge to property owners and developers. VEC will provide underground single-phase primary in an approved subdivision.

Outside an approved residential subdivision, and for all general power customers, the first 1,000 feet of underground single-phase primary will be provided. Additional underground single-phase primary will cost $1 per foot.

As part of the policy change, VEC no longer will provide PVC underground conduit to developers or property owners. Instead, developers and property owners are responsible for purchasing and installing underground conduit to VEC specifications.

In a related policy change, VEC no longer will provide meter bases. Homebuilders and developers will be responsible for purchasing and installing meter bases to VEC specifications.

Copies of the cooperative's underground and meter bass installation specifications and requirements are available at cooperative service centers.

In the Crossville area, the following businesses have been contacted and are aware of VEC's specifications for conduit and meter bases: Tennessee Wholesale Supply Group, Crossville Cash Home Center (Ace Hardware), Lowes of Crossville, King's True Value Hardware and Wholesale Supply Group.
