Enola May Bailey, 90, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 29, 2002.
Funeral services were conducted Sept. 1 at First Congregational
Church, with the Rev. Cecil McFarland officiating. Burial will
be in Washington Park Cemetery East in Indianapolis, IN.
Mrs. Bailey was born Nov. 17, 1911, in Goldsmith, IN, the daughter
of John F. and Lena Mae Young Pyle.
She was a seamstress with John J. Madden Co.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Ted
Varney of Crossville; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren;
and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
sons, Carl V. Thumma and Rex V. Thumma; and husbands, Conrad
V. Thumma and William H. Bailey.

Claude Richard Cook, 53, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 19,
2002, of cancer. No services are planned.
Mr. Cook was born April 18, 1949, in Syracuse, NY, the son of
Richard R. and Alice Grant Cook.
He was employed at Lowe's of Crossville.
Survivors include his wife, Betty J. Cook of Crossville; daughters,
Jamie Cook and Michelle Cook, both of Florida, and Patricia Blackburn
of Crossville; and granddaughter, Amanda Jones.

William Buford Foster, 79, of the Lake Tansi community, passed
away Aug. 22, 2002. Funeral services were held Aug. 25 at Tansi
Community Church, with Pastor Jeff Monday and Bro. Jack Irwin
officiating.
Mr. Foster was born Oct. 29, 1922, in Weakley County, TN, the
son of W.A. and Eunabell Montgomery Foster.
He was a retired vice president of Welcore Corp., and a member
of Tansi Community Church. He was a member of the Shriners.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Foster of Crossville; son,
Kevin Flynn of Wood Dale, IL; daughters, Kaye of Charlotte, NC,
Gerry Keller of Roselle, IL, and Cyndy Williams of Montello,
WI; sister, Thelda; and eight grandchildren.

Wilton Albert "Bill" Pickett, 74, of Sale Creek, TN,
passed away Aug. 29, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Aug.
31 from the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton,
TN. Graveside services and interment followed at Hamilton Memorial
Gardens in Hixson, TN.
Mr. Pickett was born Feb. 28, 1928, in Pikeville, TN, the son
of William Albert and Christina Payne Pickett.
He lived his adult life in Chattanooga and was retired from Dupont.
He was a member of Tansi Community Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue Cochran Pickett; sister,
Kathryn Arnold; son and daughter-in-law, William Phillip and
Pamela Pickett; daughters and son-in-law, Deborah C. Pickett,
and Johanna L. and Jim Harlety; grandchildren, Erika Pickett,
William Stephen Pickett, Brianne Nelson, Jeremiah Hartley and
Taylor Hartley; and several nieces and nephews.

Julis N. Sattler, 84, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Aug. 28,

Mrs. Sattler was born April 18, 1918, in Big Rapids, MI.
She worked as an office manager for Jones Welding of Chattanooga
for 15 years. She was a member of Fairfield Baptist Fellowship
Church, where she was actively involved in the ladies Bible study
group. She was past president of the local chapter of the Women's
Business and Professional organization.
Survivors include her husband, James L. Sattler; sons, Jim Sattler
of Chattanooga and Jack Sattler of San Clemente, CA and Saudi
Arabia; daughter, Julie of Winter Park, FL; seven grandchildren;
and four great-grandchildren.

Willie Irene Cobb, 98, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 27, 2002.

Mrs. Cobb was born April 9, 1904, in Roane County, TN, the daughter
of John and Flora Kilby Miller.
She was a factory worker, and a member of Cumberland Homesteads
Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Fay Newberry and Christine Brown,
both of Crossville; sons, Lynn Cobb of Rockwood, TN, Charles
Cobb of Warren, MI, and Glenn Ray Cobb and Tom Cobb, both of
Crossville; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her grandsons, David Cobb and Keith
Cobb; sister, Winnie Hatfield; and brothers, Ed Miller, George
Miller and John Barnes.

Mr. Gist was born April 14, 1928, in Cumberland County, the son
of John and Edna Simpson Gist.
He was a supervisor at Columbia Gas Co., and a member of St.
Alphonsus Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World
War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Mercier Gist of Crossville; daughter,
Anita Frombaugh of Arizona; stepsons, Darin M. Sutton and Jack
C. Sutton, both of Guy Mills, PA, and James D. Sutton of Gulfport,
MS; brothers and sister-in-law, Raymond and Lela Gist of Crossville

Mr. Lewis was born April 17, 1928, in Lee County, VA, the son

Lee Roy Morris, 64, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 2, 2002.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m.
from the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City, TN, with
the Rev. Orville Hurst officiating. Burial will be in Spring
City Cemetery.

Mr. Morris was born Jan. 9, 1938, in Rockwood, TN, the son of
Henry C. and Ruth Jane Smith Morris.
As a young man, he ran the Spring City Theater, then enjoyed
his profession as a plumber in the Chattanooga area for 30 years.
He served in the National Guard, was a member of Falling Water
Church of God for 28 years and a member of Victory Baptist Church
for four years.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Ruby Frances McFalls
Morris of Crossville; sons and daughters-in-law, Donald Lee and
Cindy Morris of Paris, CA, Jimmy Ray and Loretta Morris of Spring

Mr. Netherton was born Aug. 20, 1934, in Jackson County, TN,
the son of Harris and Mary Lou Haney Netherton.
He was an employee of the Water and Sewer Department for the
city of Crossville, and was a member of Bakers Crossroads Freewill
Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Sue Boles Netherton of Crossville;

Mrs. Phillips was born March 12, 1910, in Overton County, TN,
the daughter of Dailey and Bertie Padgett Howard.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Hanging Limb First Baptist
Church.

Lonzie Swallows of Monterey; sons and daughters-in-law, Franklin

Danny "Boone" Bilbrey, 30, of Pleasant Hill, passed

Mr. Putnam was born Nov. 14, 1915, in Bellview, TN, the son of
James M. and Mary Davis Putnam.
He was a teacher, and a member of Crossville First United Methodist
Church.
He was a Mason, and was a member of the Amateur Radio and Relay
League, the Exchange Club, the American Legion and VFW. He served
as chief radio technician in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Marcia Bilbrey Putnam of Crossville;
stepson, J.H. Graham III of Crossville; stepdaughters, Henrietta
Calahan and Mary Frances Williams, both of Crossville; brother,
Hendrick Putnam of Clarksville, TN; sister, Katherine Stricklin
of Palatka, FL; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie Davenport Putnam;
brother, Ralph Putnam; and granddaughter, Jordan Graham.

Sharon L. Wenzel, 43, of Belknap Township, MI, passed away Sept.
3, 2002. A prayer service was held Sept. 5 at Bill Brietzke Funeral
Home in Rogers City, MI.
Mrs. Wenzel was born Oct. 30, 1958, in Detroit, MI, the daughter
of Laurence and Iris Karnes Allcorn.
She was a 1976 graduate of Thurston High School in Redford Township,
MI. Following her graduation, she moved to Rogers City, and made
her home with her aunt and uncle, Sharon and Bob Streich. She
and Dan Wenzel were married on July 9, 1977, at St. Ignatius
Catholic Church, and in 1978, they moved to Belknap Township.
She was employed at area convenience stores for several years,
and later worked for Erke Farms during the harvest season.
Survivors include her husband, Dan; sons, Cody E. Wenzel and
Justin L. Wenzel; parents, Larry and Iris Allcorn of Crossville;
brothers and sister-in-law, Jim and Joan Allcorn of Northville,
MI, and William Allcorn of Redford Township; mother- and father-in-law,
Gerald and Emmajean Wenzel of Rogers City; and many aunts, uncles,
nieces and nephews.

Marsha Walker of Cookeville and Cindy Woody of Sparta; son, Danny

Mirtie Jewel Ashburn Anderson, 96, of the Homestead community
of Crossville, passed away Sept. 5, 2002. Funeral services were

burial in Crossville City Cemetery. The Rev. Dan Haskins officiated,
with special music by Chris South and Joy Goad.
Mrs. Anderson was born April 22, 1906, in Overton County, TN,
the daughter of William Calvin and Sarah Ann Stamps Ashburn.
She was an original Homesteader, and was a member of Cumberland
Homesteads Baptist Church. She was retired as a cook for the
Cumberland County School System and for Cumberland Mountain State
Park.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Sara
Anderson of Crossville, Ralph and Patricia Anderson of Knoxville,
and William and Janet Anderson of Pleasant Hill; daughters and
sons-in-law, Bettie and Frank Hargis of Lenoir City, TN, and
Faye and Danny Hassler of Crossville; brother, Orthel Ashburn
of Plant City, FL; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix Basil Anderson;
and son, Bobby Gaskel Anderson.

Franklin Gustave Barnett, 61, of Crossville, passed away Sept.
4, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 6 from the chapel
of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery.
Deacon Joe Solis officiated, with special music by Marion Sullivan.
Mr. Barnett was born Dec. 3, 1940, in Flint, MI, the son of Samuel
and Florence Olson Barnett.
He was retired from General Motors as a committee man at the
Buick Motors Division in Flint. He was president of the Lake
Park Property Owners Association, and was a member of the Michigan
National Guard.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Clint and Lorianne
Barnett of Ruckersville, VA; daughter and son-in-law, Lenore
and Steven Westover of Millington, MI; sister, Ruth Riggs of
Crossville; grandchildren, Nick Westover and Valerie Westover;
and many special friends and neighbors.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made
to the American Cancer Society.

Emma Bilbrey, 94, of Monterey, passed away Sept. 9, 2002. Funeral
services will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. from
the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with interment to
follow in Falling Springs Cemetery. The Rev. Ovle Tinch will
officiate.
Visitation will be tonight from 5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Bilbrey was born July 3, 1908, in Overton County, TN, the
daughter of Vince and Loursey Upton Hargis.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Monterey United Methodist
Church. She was a 1931 graduate of Crawford High School.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Betty Lou and
Ray Higgins of Cookeville; grandchildren, Carolyn Harris, Thomas
Buttram and Bobby Buttram, all of Monterey, Sara Howell of Algood,
Donna Robinson of Cookeville and Kenny Buttram of Sparta; 13
great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Bilbrey; brothers,
Ike Hargis, Benton Hargis and Buren Hargis; and sisters, Anna
Mae Crabtree, Dessie Norrod, Edna Hargis, Martha Hargis and Zola
Hargis.

Cosby Arnold Cross, 75, of Sparta, TN, passed away Sept. 8, 2002.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m.
from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory
Inc., with burial in Mayland Cemetery. Bro. Clayton Padgett will
officiate. An Honor Guard will present the flag and play "Taps,"
and Kara Cross will sing "Amazing Grace."

Mr. Cross was born April 4, 1927, in Fentress County, TN, the
son of Alexander and Winnie Carmack Cross.
He was self-employed, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War
II.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and
Eddie Barnwell of Pleasant Hill; sons and daughters-in-law, William
and Deborah Cross of Pleasant Hill, Larry and Betty Cross, Dennis
Cross, and Jeffrey and Kara Cross, all of Crossville, and Danny
and Phyllis Cross of Mayland; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife,
Mary; sons, Jerry Cross and Gary Cross; grandson, Scottie Lowe;
and granddaughter, Suzanne Wacker.
Pallbearers were Mr. Cross' sons, Danny Cross and Jeffrey Cross,
and grandsons, Quinn Barnwell, C.J. Baldwin, Tony Barnwell and
Anthony Cross. Honorary pallbearers were Eddie Barnwell and Tony

Natalie Lacole Dawkins, 16, passed away Sept. 3, 2002. Funeral

Natalie was born Jan. 10, 1986, in Moore County, NC, the daughter
of Steven Mark and Barbara Joan Morton Dawkins.
She was a student at Cumberland County High School, where she
was a member of the CCHS Marching Band, Lady Jets soccer team
and the vocal music class. She was a member of the National Honor
Society last year, and was elected to "Who's Who."
Survivors include her parents, Steve and Barbara Dawkins of Grandview;
grandparents, John and Pat Morton of Grandview; brother, Gage
Dawkins, and sister, Kelsey Dawkins, both of Grandview; and aunts
and uncles, Ed and Mary Morton, Johnny and Sandy Morton, and
Dale Morton, all of Grandview, Jeff Dawkins of Rockingham, NC,
and Anna Morton of Black Mountain, NC.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Rufus and Pauline
Dawkins.

Mrs. Hickey was born Sept. 7, 1940, in White County, TN, the
daughter of Clayton and Virgie Lawson Gentry.
She was a center coordinator for Head Start, and was a member
of Pleasant Hill First Baptist Church.

daughters and sons-in-law, Bertha and Billy Burnham of Crossville

Margaret Helen "Pego" Sellars, 53, of Mims, FL, passed
away Aug. 19, 2002.
"Pego" was born July 22, 1949, in Pleasant Hill, TN,
the daughter of Jack and Helen Sellars. She was delivered by
the late Dr. Paul Irvin Jr.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, L.K. and Helen
Wright; her brother, David K. Sellars, who died in 1970; great-aunt,
Amy Cox Harshman; and cousins, DeWitt and Annabelle Beeson, and
Margaret Howell, founder of the Pink Ladies at the hospital in
Crossville.
Both the Sellars and Wright families lived in the Homesteads
for many years. Pego's happiest memories were the summers spent
in Crossville. She was a police officer for DeKalb County, GA,
for a number of years, and was retired from Harris Corporation
in Melbourne, FL.
Pego was a beloved wife, daughter, aunt and cousin and was exceptionally
blessed to call many "friend" and will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her husband, Charles D. Trotter; her parents,
Jack and Helen Sellars of Orlando, FL; sister, Sharon Sellars
of Athens, GA; and brother and sister-in-law, Wright and Lana
Sellars.

Sam Charles Simpson, 67, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 7,
2002. Private graveside services were held Sept. 9 at Crossville
City Cemetery, with Bro. Phil Jenkins officiating.
Mr. Simpson was born Feb. 10, 1935, in Cumberland County, the
son of Aaron Sr. and Sarah Sullivan Simpson.
He was a heavy equipment operator, and was of the Protestant
faith.
Survivors include his daughters, Cindy Simpson of Chattanooga
and Melinda Simpson of South Pittsburg, TN; sisters and brother-in-law,
Eloise Knapp of Saraland, AL, and Mary and Garland Brown, and

He was preceded in death by his brother, John L. Simpson.

Edna Stephens Lacy, 79, of Attalla, AL, passed away Sept. 10,

Mrs. Lacy was born July 21, 1923, in Bridgeport, AL.
She was a homemaker, and a member for over 50 years of the Church
of God 7th Day.

Robert W. Dunn

Robert Wenell Dunn, 82, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 12,
2002. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 14 from the chapel
of Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton, TN, with the Rev. Bill
Ewing, the Rev. Jim Purser and the Rev. Vern Daugherty officiating.
Burial was in Rhea Memory Gardens.
Mr. Dunn was born June 22, 1920, in Westel, TN, the son of Robert
Jasper and Frances Thomas Dunn.
He lived in Dayton for 38 years before moving to Crossville in
1996. For 20 years he was employed as a serviceman for a natural
gas company, and then as a security guard at Kayser-Roth. He
served as a sergeant with the U.S. Army during World War II in
the European Theater. He was a member of American Legion Post
100 in Dayton.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Patricia "Pat"
Moumblo Dunn of Crossville; daughters, Michele Dunn of Crossville,
and Diane Sullivan and Colleen Dodd, both of Dayton; son, Wenell
Dunn of Crossville; sisters, Estelle Cole of Cleveland, TN, Viola
Smith and Adele Trout, both of Athens, TN, and Birdie Holmes
and Evie Trusley, both of Decatur, TN; two grandchildren; and
one great-granddaughter.

Jerry Len Hamilton, age 53 years, 3 months and 6 days, of Suggs
Lane in Crossville, lost his life on Sept. 7, 2002, in a tragic
accident on Lantana Rd.
Mr. Hamilton was born June 1, 1949, in Crossville, the son of
James Thomas Hamilton Sr. and Ruth Ann Suggs Hamilton.
He was a member of Church of Christ, serving our Lord every day.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served his overseas
duty in Fairbanks, AK. His brother, James Thomas Hamilton Jr.,
was in Vietnam and Jerry wasn't allowed to go. Jerry served 6
months at West Point with the 559th Eng. Battalion.
Mr. Hamilton is survived by his wife, Vickie D. Hamilton; daughter,
Crystal Gail Hamilton; mother, Ruth Ann Hamilton; and a host
of friends, neighbors and other relatives, who will miss him
every day.

Jerry was laid to rest in Lantana Cemetery, beside his father,

Mr. Johnston was born Feb. 15, 1923, in Hanceville, AL.

Dale B. Vantrease, 74, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Sept.
12, 2002. A celebration of life service was held Sept. 16 at
Fairfield Glade Community Church, with private interment. Dale
Marshall officiated.
Mr. Vantrease was born Nov. 25, 1927, in Grant, TN.
He was a firefighter for the city of Royal Oak, MI, for 33 years,
and was also an instructor for the Fairfield Glade Fire Department.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in atomic bomb testing.
Survivors include his wife, Minnise, of Fairfield Glade; daughter
and son-in-law, Linda and Jim Mayotte of Sterling Heights, MI;
son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Joann Vantrease of South

Abigail Josephine Norrod Rogers, 69, of Kailua-Kona, HI, formerly
of Crossville, passed away Sept. 14, 2002. Funeral services will
be held Saturday, Sept. 21 at Davis Community Church in Davis,
CA.
Mrs. Rogers was born Feb. 28, 1933, in Pleasant Hill, the youngest
child of Floyd and Jimmie Mae Norrod.
She was raised in Crossville and graduated from Cumberland County
High School. She was the first in her family to receive a college
degree, which she earned from Tennessee Technological University.
After college, she taught at Tennessee School for the Blind in
Nashville and Windsor Locks High School in Connecticut.
In her 20s she became a flight attendant for Transocean Airlines
and staffed flights to Europe and the Pacific Islands. She was
stationed out of Oakland, CA, where she met and married William
B. Rogers. They were married 42 years.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Rogers of Kona, HI; daughter
and son-in-law, Tracy and James Beckwith of El Macero, CA; sister
and brother-in-law, Dr. Philip and Flodine Norrod Sehl of Wethersfield,
CT; brother, Paul Norrod of Crossville; and grandchildren, Bryce,
William and Spencer, of El Macero.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Jewell Garrett.

Mrs. Williams was born Nov. 17, 1907, in Tennessee, the daughter

Mrs. Bohrer was born June 27, 1928, in Kansas City, MO, the daughter

First Christian Church. She was an avid bridge player, belonging
to two bridge clubs in Crossville, and enjoyed golfing and traveling.

Harry Donald "Don" Varney Jr., 74, of Crossville, passed

Mr. Varney was born Oct. 3, 1927, in Portland, ME, the son of
Harry Donald Sr. and Phyllis Louise Moseley Varney.
He was a baker at Flowers Bakery, and a member of St. Raphael's
Episcopal Church. He was past president of the Crossville Exchange
Club, was active in the Boy Scouts, and was a member of the American
Society of Bakery Engineers.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Varney of Crossville; sons and
daughters-in-law, Harry III and Nancy Varney, and William Scott
and Mary Pat Varney, all of Maple Grove, MN; daughter and son-in-law,
Linda and Randy Follmer of Urban, IL; brother, R.C. Ted Varney

2002. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 15 from the chapel

Mrs. Whittaker was born Sept. 8, 1918, in Overton County, TN,
the daughter of Curtis and Minerva Kirby Looper.
She was an upholsterer, and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include her daughter, Wayne Lynn Ford of Illinois;
sons, Larry Whittaker, Kenny Whittaker and Mike Whittaker, all
of Crossville; sister, Mary Bessie Barnes of Crossville; eight

She was preceded in death by her son, Burl Whittaker; daughter,
Mildred Brown; brother, Dolfus Looper; and sister, Lois Brown.

James "Jim" Vestal Wilson, 65, of Crossville, passed
away Sept. 12, 2002. A time of remembrance service was held Sept.

Mr. Wilson was born July 7, 1937, in Cumberland County, the son
of Clyde and Bessie Vandever Wilson.
He was a land developer, and a member of the Church of Christ.
He served in the National Guard, and was a member of the Crossville
Blues baseball team.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Mae Turner Wilson of Crossville;

Constance "Connie" Lou Williams Zellner, 70, of Fairfield

Methodist Church in Cincinnati, OH.
Mrs. Zellner was born Feb. 2, 1932, in Roseville, OH.
She was a graduate of Case Western Reserve University with a
bachelor's degree in medical technology, was a docent at Taft
Museum of Art in Cincinnati, and was active in PEO and in the
choirs of North College Hill United Methodist Church and Fairfield
Glade Community Church.
Survivors include her husband, David C. Zellner, MD; daughters

son of Jonah and Betty Howard Adams.

the Rev. Clyde Powers, and the Rev. Faith Proietti of Med Central
Health Systems officiating. Burial was in Butternut Ridge Cemetery

Mrs. Blackburn was born Jan. 28, 1943, in Crossville, the daughter
of Alvin "Cotton" and Ella Ray.
She was a homemaker.

Helen E. Goodrick
Feb. 18, 1928 - Sept. 20, 2002
Helen Elaine Goodrick, 74, of Fairfield Glade, ascended to heaven
Sept. 20, 2002, from St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
Mrs. Goodrick was born Feb. 18, 1928, in Williamsport, IN, the
daughter of Glenn and Evah Goodrich.
She grew up on a small farm on the Illinois-Indiana state line,
nine miles east of Hoopeston, IL. She attended a one-room grade
school prior to entering John Greer High School in Hoopeston.
She graduated from John Greer in 1946 with the nickname "Pretty
Baby," and entered the Lake View Hospital Nursing School
in Danville, IL. She became a registered nurse in 1949.
Helen married James Goodrick on Nov. 22, 1950, in St. James Methodist
Church in Danville. James' work in the mining industry was the
result of Helen - nurse, wife and mother - working part-time
in Illinois, Missouri, New York, Arkansas, California, Indiana
and Georgia. Helen was an avid TV spectator of tennis, baseball
and football.
Family and friends will always have a loving and pleasant memory
of this sweet lady. May she rest in peace in heaven.
She is survived by her devoted husband, James W. Goodrick of
Fairfield Glade; sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Judy Goodrick
of Taylors, SC, Kirk and Joy Goodrick of Marietta, GA, and Jeff
and Mary Goodrick of Atlanta, GA; daughters and sons-in-law,
Susan and Bill Henry of Nashville, and Bonnie and Craig Glaizer
of Laclede, ID; grandchildren, Lainie and Shaw Goodrick, Don

Ned William Grayson, 71, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Sept.
18, 2002. Funeral services were held Sept. 21 at Fairfield Glade
United Methodist Church. A private memorial service will be held
at a later date in Tipton, IN.
Mr. Grayson was born May 21, 1931, in Tipton County, IN, the
son of Charles W. and Elsie F. Broyles Grayson.
He retired in 1995 as vice president of operations for North
America for Hy-Line International, after a 45-year career. He
served in the National Guard; was chairman of the Persimmon Festival
in Mitchell, IN, in 1960 and '61, was co-chairman for the homecoming
celebration for Mercury Seven astronaut Virgil I. "Gus"
Grissom in 1961; received the Distinguished Service Award from
the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce in Mitchell; was chairman
of the inaugural Pork Festival in Tipton, IN; was a member of
the Board of School Trustees, Tipton Community School Corporation,
1980-'83; was a member of the building corporation for Tipton
Middle School, 1972; and was awarded a lifetime membership in
the Iowa Poultry Association "for many years of outstanding
service to the Iowa Poultry Industry." Ned was also a Tennessee
Squire.
Survivors include his wife, Sharlot Grayson of Fairfield Glade;
sons, Whitney Grayson, Kyle W. Grayson and Barclay Grayson, all
of Fishers, IN; brother, Robert C. Grayson of Greenwich, CT;
sister, Margaret A. "Peggy" Williams of Kokomo, IN;

Charles Edward McNeal, 74, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 18,

Mr. McNeal was born June 27, 1928, in Putnam County, the son

Mrs. Daves was born April 17, 1916, in Cumberland County, the
daughter of William and Addie Walker Caruthers.
She was a cook for the 4-H Camp, and was a member of the First
Christian Church.
Survivors include her sons, Ross Daves, Charles Daves and Floyd
Daves, all of Crossville; daughters, Valera Lemona of Sullivan,
OH, and Lena Jackson of Villa Rica, GA; brother, James Caruthers
of Wellington, OH; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren;

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Daves; son, Infant

John Alton Faulk, 59, of Crossville, passed away at his residence
Sept. 24, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral
services will be held in Memphis, TN, to be announced at a later
date. Burial will be in Memphis Memorial Park in Memphis.
Visitation will be today (Sept. 27) from 4 to 6 p.m. at Crossville
Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory Inc.
Mr. Faulk was born July 19, 1943, in Memphis, TN, the son of
Mary Elizabeth Atkinson and Thurston Pullen Faulk.
He was a technician with Bell South Telephone Company, and was
a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He led a mortar division
in the war, and received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal,
Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal (with 60 Device).
Survivors include his sisters and brother-in-law, Margaret F.
and Clyde Hamner of Fairfield Glade, and Mary Earles of Memphis;
four nephews; one niece; two great-nephews; one great-niece;
and one great-great-niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

George A. "Pete" "Saucer" Manning, 64, of
Rockwood, passed away Sept. 24, 2002. Masonic memorial services

in the chapel of Evans Mortuary in Rockwood, with the Rev. Alton
Johnson officiating. Graveside services and interment will be
Saturday, Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. at Roane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Manning was born March 13, 1938, in Ozone, TN.
He was a retired maintenance craftsman at Fortafil Fibers with
16 years of service, and was a former electrician with Roane
Electric Furnace for 25 years. He attended Swan Pond United Methodist
Church, and was a member of Rockwood Lodge #403 F&AM and
Alhambra Shrine of Chattanooga.
Survivors include his wife, Dr. Wanda H. Manning of Rockwood;
daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Jeff Braswell of Katy, TX,
and Dr. Karen Clement and Dr. Kevin Clement of Murfreesboro,
TN; son and daughter-in-law, Scott D. and Eva R. Manning of Kingsport,
TN; grandchildren, Jennifer Braswell, Luke Clement, Carly Clement,
Reggie Ramey, LeAnn Ramey and Anthony Ramey; great-grandchildren,
Holly Ramey and Devan Carter; brothers-in-law, Buddy Dill of
Rockwood, Wayne Hembree of Signal Mountain, TN, and Loren Hembree

Mrs. Tindell was born May 26, 1915, the daughter of Robert Janow

She was a factory worker, and a member of Beacon Baptist Church.

sisters, Janey Jolley of Rockwood and Ola Humphreys of Chattanooga;
nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces
