Ada V. Gunter, 92, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 23, 2001.
Funeral services were conducted Aug. 25 from the chapel of Burris
Funeral Home, with burial in Linary Cemetery. Phil Jenkins and
Mitchell Covington officiated, with special music by the Linary
Church Singers.
Ms. Gunter was born Dec. 30, 1908, in Pickett County, TN, the
daughter of Porter and Sibbie Hill Smith.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Linary Church of Christ.
Survivors include her sons, Keith Gunter of Crossville and James
Gunter of Spring City; daughters, Grace Galyon and Charlene Gunter,
both of Crossville; brother, Lansden Smith of Monroe, TN; 13
grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Greg Gunter, Barry Gunter, Mick Galyon, Marty
Galyon, Rodney Ray and Marc Galyon.

Ronald Eugene Nealon, 55, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 27,
2001. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 30 from the chapel

Mr. Nealon was born Oct. 19, 1945, in Cumberland County, the
son of Ira Elmer and Stella Beatrice Hall Nealon.
He was a security guard, and of the Baptist faith.

Charles J. Barnwell, 78, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 30,
2001. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 31 from the chapel
of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., with
the Rev. Reed Jones officiating. Burial was Sept. 1 at Green
Acres Memory Gardens.
Mr. Barnwell was born July 25, 1923, in Crossville, the son of
Henry and Judy Barnwell.
He was a carpenter, and a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Barnwell of Crossville; and
a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Judy Barnwell;
and special friend, Sue Losey.

Lois Dille, 93, of Pleasant Hill, passed away Aug. 27, 2001.
A memorial service was conducted Aug. 31 at Pleasant Hill Community
Church, with the Rev. William Ring officiating, reflections by
family and special music by Ruth McKenzie.
Mrs. Dille was born June 29, 1908, in Cissna Park, IL, the daughter
of Edward Lotan and Adella Carpenter Lawson.
She was a missionary in Angola, Africa, and a member of Pleasant
Hill Community Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Patricia Dunbar of Winona,
MN; son, Thomas Minton Dille of Fort Collins, CO; six grandchildren;
and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Russell Dille.

Scholarship Fund, through Pleasant Hill Community Church.

Edward J. "E.J." Loyd, 73, of Dayton, OH, passed away
Sept. 3, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Sept.
6 at 7 p.m. at North Dayton Baptist Church in Dayton, OH, with
Pastor Randy Chestnut officiating.
Local funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 8, at
1 p.m. at Newton Baptist Church in Crossville, with burial in
Lantana Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from noon until
time of service, at the church.
Mr. Loyd was born Dec. 5, 1927, in Crossville.
He was retired from Price Brothers Company after 43 years of
service, and operated Loyd's Auto Service for 38 years. He was
a member of the North Dayton Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Loyd; daughters and sons-in-law,
Judy and Mike Cboins and Shirley and Wade King, all of Lafollette,
TN; son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Kathy Loyd of Dayton,
OH; brother and sister-in-law, Clayton and Grace Loyd of Dayton,
OH; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucille and Newell Moore of
Sidney, OH; and Betty and Ferrell White of Pikeville, TN; four

Melva Roselin Tuch, 55, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 2, 2001.

Mrs. Tuch was born Feb. 11, 1946, in West Virginia.

Robert Leon Cornwell, 66, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 2,

Mr. Cornwell was born July 9, 1935, in Nicholas County, WV, the
son of Clarence and Mary Stanley Cornwell.
He was a retired forklift operator, and was in the U.S. Air Force.

Jame Herbert Daugherty Sr., 94, of Crossville, passed away Sept.

Cemetery. The Rev. Roland Smith, Dr. Ken Daugherty and the Rev.

Mr. Daugherty was born Jan 28, 1907, in Scott County, MO, the
son of Benjamin Gaither and Bertie Stokes Daugherty.
He was a retired manager of Standard Brands Corp., and was also
former owner of an auto retail center in New Madrid, MO. He retired
to Crossville five years ago with his wife, Vivian. He was a
member of New Hope Baptist Church in Crossville, and a member
of the Masonic Lodge in San Diego, CA.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Gaskins Daugherty of Crossville;
sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Vern and Velma Daugherty,
Dr. Ken and Barbara Daugherty, all of Crossville, and Jim and
Edie Daugherty of Hilton Head, SC; brothers, Cecil Daugherty
and Gaither Daugherty, both of Sikeston, MO; and grandchildren,
Jason Andrew Daugherty, Ben Daugherty, Todd Daugherty, Barry

DOLORES ESTELLE MORLOCK DeWITT
Dolores Estelle Morlock DeWitt, 74, of Lake Tansi, went to be
with the Lord on Aug. 30, 2001. A memorial service will be held
Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. at First Methodist Church of Crossville.
Mrs. DeWitt was born July 17, 1927, in Pontiac, MI, the daughter
of Alfred William and Dorothy Cornell Morlock.
She grew up in the Detroit area, graduating from Mackenzie High
School. She went on to Albion College in Albion, MI, and graduated
in 1949. While at Albion she joined the Kappa Delta sorority,
and met and married Donald McQueen DeWitt, from St. Johns, MI,
in 1949.
Mrs. DeWitt taught school in Albion; Detroit; St. Johns; Karlsruhe,
Germany, during her husband's military service; and Roscommon
County, MI. She and her husband partnered a grocery store business,
Manor Market in Higgins Lake, MI, where they began raising a
family of three daughters. They also lived in Lansing, MI and
St. Johns before moving to Oak Ridge, Knoxville and then Lake
Tansi.
Dolores was a blessed wife and mother, lover of music - including
Sweet Adelines, piano and Community Band, an avid golfer and
bridge player and enjoyed traveling in the United States and
abroad with her beloved husband. Dolores and Don celebrated their
52nd anniversary on Aug. 6.
Survivors include her husband, Donald McQueen DeWitt of Lake
Tansi; daughters, Donelle Bowman, Diana DeWitt and Dori Miller;
mother, Dorothy Marlock; sister, Sharon Davis; and three precious
grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made
in Dolores' name to Hospice of Cumberland County and the American
Cancer Society.

Allen Simmons, 84, of Erie, PA, passed away Sept. 3, 2001. Funeral

Mr. Simmons was born June 23, 1917, in Ravenscroft, TN, the son
of Ervin Sr. and Mary Osborne Simmons.
He was employed by Hammermill Paper Co., retiring in 1976 after
38 years, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was
a member of Luther Memorial Church in Erie, the American Legion
Rodgers Israel Post 11 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Rose Henry Simmons; daughters
and son-in-law, Sandra and Al Carlson of Erie, and Candice Sprouse

Stanton Edgar Wright, 71, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 29,

Mr. Wright was born Sept. 21, 1929, in Crab Orchard, the son
of Archie Lee and Eliza Phillips Wright.
He was a ship fitter, and a member of Church of God of Prophecy.

Bertha Ashburn, 92, of Ozone, passed away Sept. 7, 2001. Funeral

Mrs. Ashburn was born Oct. 21, 1908, in Ozone, the daughter of

Laura E. Miller, 89, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 5, 2001.

Miss Miller was born Nov. 19, 1911, in Overton County, TN, the
daughter of William Pearson and LaRissa Chilton Miller.
She was a factory worker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and LaRissa

Fred L. Silvers, 78, of Akron, OH, passed away Aug. 23, 2001.

Funeral Home in Tallmadge, OH. Private entombment services were
held Aug. 27 at Hillside Memorial Park.
Mr. Silvers was born Dec. 6, 1922, in Crab Orchard.
He retired in 1984 from the Ben Gang Lathing and Plaster Co.
as a plasterer, after 36 years of service, and was a U.S. Army
veteran of World War II. He was a member of New Horizons Christian
Church and of the Tallmadge Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Willodean Silvers of
Akron; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Silvers and Glenn Warner
of Tallmadge; sister, Arno McNeil of Crab Orchard; grandchildren,

Mrs. Bilbrey was born Feb. 15, 1925, in Crossville, the daughter

Mrs. Edwards was born July 23, 1917, in Red Boiling Springs,
TN, the daughter of Henry and Gertie Earps Smith.
She was a merchant for Edwards Shoe Store, and a member of Gospel
Baptist Tabernacle.

Pam Edwards of Crossville; six grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Edwards; daughter,

Elmer Cecil Powers, 73, of LaFollette, TN, passed away Sept.

Woodlawn Cemetery.
Mr. Powers was born March 1, 1928, in Whitley County, KY, the
son of Joe and Lillie York Powers.
He was an employee of CSX Railroad for 43 years, and was a member,
deacon and choir member of West LaFollette Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Kathleen Davis Powers
of LaFollette; daughters, Lois Collins of LaFollette, and Shirley
Greenwood, Stella Heatherly and Edna Blackwell, all of Jacksboro;

Ronald "Ronnie" Harry Pugh, 54, of Crab Orchard, passed

Mr. Pugh was born Jan. 8, 1947, in Cumberland County, the son
of Harry and Alma Jean Pugh Wilson.
He was a farmer, a construction worker for Tom Pelfrey, a bus
driver for 28 years and a board member of Farm Service Agency
for 10 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War,
and was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Connie Smith Pugh of Crab Orchard;
sons, Wayne Pugh of Cookeville and Andy Pugh of Crossville; daughter,
Sherry Pugh of San Francisco, CA; father, Harry Pugh of Crossville;
mother and stepfather, Jean and Bill Wilson of Crossville; and
sister, Rita Kay Martin of Crossville.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Pugh.

Robert Anthony Jasinski Sr., 61, of Crossville, passed away Sept.
5, 2001. A funeral Mass was held Sept. 10 at St. Casimer's Catholic
Church in Cleveland, OH, with burial in Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland.
Mr. Jasinski was born Jan. 8, 1940, in Cleveland, OH, the son
of Alexander and Harriet Serwatka Jasinski.
He was retired from Research Development Baking Company, and
was of the Catholic faith. He had formerly been a resident of
Cleveland, OH, and Antioch, IL.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Graham Jasinski of Crossville;
daughters, Janet Murray of Lakewood, OH, Susan Jasinski of Crossville
and Barbara Pryor of Cookeville; sons, Robert Jasinski Jr. of
Norton, KS, and Daniel Jasinski of Crossville; sister, Mary Ann
Murray of Cambridge, OH; and grandchildren, Jodi Jasinski and
Joseph Schwenn.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Jasinski.

Dr. Billy Joe Powell, 67, of Smyrna, GA, passed away Sept. 10,
2001. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 15 at Praise Tabernacle
Church in Powder Springs, GA, with the Rev. Tommy Chapman officiating.
Interment was in Praise Memorial Gardens.
Dr. Powell was born July 7, 1934, in Meigs County, TN.
He was a retired dentist, and a founding member of Praise Tabernacle
Church. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama School
of Dentistry in 1963, and was in the U.S. Army Dental-Medical
Corps from 1954-'57. He had a dental practice in Austell, GA
for 17 years. He taught dentistry at Oral Roberts University
in Tulsa, OK and at the Medical College of Georgia School of
Dentistry.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Powell of Smyrna; daughters,
Margaret Powell Smith of Tulsa, OK and Laura Ellen Powell of
Atlanta, GA; sons, Joseph Scott Powell of Costa Mesa, CA, and
James Coles Powell of Atlanta; sister, Shirley Powell Duer of
Crossville; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Winton Cecil Brown, 89, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 16, 2001.
Funeral services were conducted Sept. 18 at Hunter Funeral Home

Mr. Brown was born May 5, 1912, in Hilham, TN, the son of William
Henry and Malley Florence Rich Brown.
He was a farmer.

Marjorie Elmore McDaniel, 74, of Crossville, passed away Sept.

Mrs. McDaniel was born May 25, 1927, in Cumberland County, the

WILLIAM W. WEAVER
William W. "Bill" Weaver, 83, of Port Charlotte, FL,
formerly of Crossville, passed away Sept. 14, 2001. A memorial
service will be held later this year.
Mr. Weaver was born June 22, 1918, in Burgettstown, PA.
He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and was a
U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, serving as a major.
While living in Crossville, Mr. Weaver, along with Dr. Bill Evans,
Jack Evans and others founded the Cumberland Clinic Foundation.
In 1968, the Weaver family moved to Celina, TN, where he was
a member of the original group instrumental in the opening of
Clay County Hospital. He served as administrator and later as
laboratory and X-ray supervisor.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Weaver of Port Charlotte;
six children, Patrick Daniel of Germantown, TN, Dayna of Neptune
Beach, FL, Roberta of Irvine, CA, Bob of Cookeville, Amy of Durham,
NC, and Walt of Houma, LA; sister, Elizabeth Halverstadt of Fairfield
Glade; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Edd Brandon, 80, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 12, 2001. A
memorial service was conducted Sept. 14 from the chapel of Bilbrey

Faye Brandon. The Crossville Police Department and Crossville
Fire Department stood as Honor Guard. Presentation of the flag

Mr. Brandon was born Nov. 22, 1920, in Roane County, TN, the
son of James M. and Della Cate Brandon.
He was a contractor, and former mayor and city commissioner of
Crossville. He was of the Protestant faith, and a member of the
American Legion. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his daughter, Sharon Campbell of Crossville;
grandson, John David Campbell of Crossville; brother, Fred Brandon

Treva Carnell Tucker, 96, of Monterey, passed away Sept. 20,
2001. Graveside services were conducted Sept. 24 at Wingo Cemetery.

Mrs. Tucker was born April 15, 1905, in Graves County, KY, the
daughter of John Logan and Tinnie Mae Dick Gordon.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Wingo Church of Christ.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, John and Melba
Via of the Cumberland Cove community; sister, Mary Lou Elliott
of Temple City, CA; grandchildren, Lynn Venable of Nashville,
Terry Via of Colorado Springs, CO, Sally Baruzzini of Metamora,
IL, Lee Ann Goin of Alpharetta, GA, and William Via of New York
City, NY; and great-grandchildren, Jonathan Watkins of Nashville,
Adam Baruzzini, Kristin Baruzzini, Kelsey Baruzzini and Kaylyn
Baruzzini, all of Metamora, and Joshua Goin of Alpharetta.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Luba Via and Palos
Tucker; sisters, Beatrice Anderson, Pauline Tibbs and Oneida
Binkley; and brothers, Osborne Gordon, Earl Gordon and Jack Gordon.

RAYMOND MYERS VAUGHN
Raymond Myers Vaughn, 89, of Mount Vernon, OH, passed away Sept.
19, 2001. Private graveside services will be held at Davis Cemetery
in Crossville.
Mr. Vaughn was born Aug. 30, 1912, in Pennsylvania, the son of
Clarence Russell and Lulu McDonald Vaughn.
He worked for the Seventh-day Adventist Church as a school teacher
and literature evangelist. He had also been employed at Loma
Linda Foods, Adelphian Academy and Andrews University in Michigan.
He retired from Kettering Medical Center in Dayton, OH, in 1977.
Survivors include his son, Ronald Vaughn of Apopka, FL; daughters,
Doreen Vaughn of Mount Vernon and Contance Davis of Okeechobee,
FL; brother, Russell Vaughn of Portland, TN; eight grandchildren;
14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Vaughn; brother,
Kenneth Vaughn; and sister, Beatrice Bayer.

Cordell Cook, 78, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 24, 2001.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 27, at 11
a.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with interment
to follow in Davidson Cemetery. The Rev. Billy England will officiate.
Visitation will be tonight (Wednesday) from 5 to 8, at the funeral
home.
Mr. Cook was born July 29, 1923, in Davidson, TN, to Nick and
Mary Frances Welch Cook.
He was retired from the Chrysler Motor Company, and was a member
of the American Legion and the Tennessee Sheriffs Association.
Survivors include his sister, Stella Cooke of Monterey.

FRANCES CRING
Frances Cring, 77, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 21, 2001.
Funeral services were conducted Sept. 23 from the chapel of Crossville
Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., with burial in Green
Acres Memory Gardens. Billy Smith officiated.
Mrs. Cring was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Miami, FL.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her son, Robert Cring Jr. of Monterey; daughters,
Karen Sue Whittenburg and Dale Ann Baldwin, both of Crossville;
and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary Mitchell;
husband, Robert E. Cring Sr.; and stepfather, Malcolm O'Neil.
Pallbearers were Robert Cring Jr.; Eugene Baldwin, Jason Baldwin,
Chris Baldwin, Bobby Whittenburg and Chet Elmore. Honorary pallbearers
were Jennifer Cring and Andrew Cring.

Elizabeth Mae Farris, 94, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 19,
2001. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 22 at Pomona United
Methodist Church, with burial in Pomona Cemetery. Bro. Cliff
Ingram, Bro. Bob Winger and Bro. Bratton Tucker officiated.
Mrs. Farris was born June 19, 1907, in Cumberland County, the
daughter of Albert and Sarah Monday Cox.
She was a homemaker, and of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include her daughter, Rheba Miller of Crossville; seven
grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Farris; sons,
Ronald Farris and Donald Farris; and daughters, Jeannean Farris
and Legean Farris.
Pallbearers were Mrs. Farris' grandsons, Larry Farris, Donald
Farris, Richard Dickenson, Wade Smith, Mike Wood and Michael
Wood.

RICHARD J. BAKER
Richard J. Baker, 82, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Sept. 24,
2001. A memorial service will be held today (Friday) at 11 a.m.
in the chapel of Burris Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carl Gundersen
officiating.
Mr. Baker was born Jan. 3, 1919, in Findlay, OH, the son of Albert
and Nellie Shively Baker.
He was a retired oil distributor, and of the Protestant faith.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of High Noon and
Elks Lodge #2150 in Crossville. He was also a 50-year member
of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Baker of Fairfield Glade;
daughter, Ann Christie of Columbus, OH; five grandchildren; and
two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions
be made to the American Heart Association.

PATRICIA EVALYN HALL
Patricia Evalyn Hall, 75, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 17,
2001. A memorial service was held Sept. 20 at Burris Funeral
Home.
Mrs. Hall was born March 16, 1926, in Dover, NH, the daughter
of Ernest and Rose Hatch.
She married Frank T. Hall Jr. in 1951 in Southern California,
where they raised their four children. As a career registered
nurse, Mrs. Hall worked at Daniel Freeman Hospital in Inglewood,
CA and South Bay Hospital in Redondo Beach, CA. Mr. and Mrs.
Hall moved to Crossville in 1984, after touring the nation in
search of a desirable retirement location.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Frank T. Hall Jr.
of Crossville; sons, Frank Hall III and Dennis Hall, both of
Colorado Springs, CO, and Donald Hall of Dublin, CA; daughter,
Susan Baker of Torrance, CA; and grandchildren, Daniel Hall,
Stephen Hall, Melinda Hall and Michelle Hall.

ARNOLD HASSLER
Arnold "Gene" Hassler, 74, of Crossville, passed away
Sept. 21, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 23 from
the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory
Inc., with burial in Big Lick Cemetery. Paul Keagle officiated.
Mr. Hassler was born March 31, 1927, in Cumberland County, the
son of Weddie Clayton and Maggie Eden Hassler.
He was a masonry worker.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl Webb Hassler of Crossville;
daughters, Glenda Blaylock and Carolyn Lawson, both of Crossville;
sons, Don Hassler and Thom Hassler, both of Crossville, and Dan
Hassler of North Olmstead, OH; sisters, Marie Stone of Crossville
and Betty Taylor of North Ridgeville, OH; 11 grandchildren; and
eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Weddie and Maggie Hassler;
and brother, Olathe Wayne "Buster" Hassler.

Bill Maynard, Junior Maynard, Cecil Smith, Homer Taylor and Harold
Dyer.

Gilbert Smith, 91, of Pleasant Hill, passed away Sept. 19, 2001.
Funeral services were conducted Sept. 22 from the chapel of Bilbrey
Funeral Home, with graveside services following at Spring City

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 22, 1910, in Pleasant Hill, the son of
James Herbert and Virgie Maude Anderson Smith.
He was a quality control director for the Engineering Division
of GM Tech Center, and a member of the United Church of Christ.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Leslie
Dikin of Ferndale, MI, and Shirley and Johannes Kurz of Seattle,
WA; grandchildren, Jeffrey Dikin, Michael Kurz and Cathy Hohmann;
great-grandchild, Brianna Hohmann; and cousin, Dorothy Kappelman
of Pleasant Hill.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Pearson Smith.

Nancy Anna Stodgel, 50, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 22,

Mrs. Stodgel was born May 23, 1951, in Crossville.
She was a truck driver.

father, Gene Wyatt of Crossville; brothers, Kenneth Wyatt and

Uldean Stone, 52, of Pikeville, passed away Sept. 20, 2001. Funeral

Mrs. Stone was born July 2, 1949, in Cumberland County, the daughter
of Eston and Ollie Lewis Wilson.
She was a food service supervisor for the State Prison System,
and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Dwayne Stone of Pikeville; daughter,
Ashley Stone of Pikeville; mother, Ollie Wilson of Crossville;
brothers, Paul Wilson, Ronnie Wilson, Danny Wilson and Jerry
Wilson, all of Crossville; and sisters, Mary Tabor of Crossville
and Amy Bolin of Elyria, OH.
