BETTY ANN SCHOONMAKER MORTON
Betty Ann Schoonmaker Morton, 69, of Fairfield Glade, passed away June 23, 2001. A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 28, at 11 a.m. at Fairfield Glade Community Church.
Mrs. Morton was born April 21, 1932, in Newburgh, NY, the daughter of Harriet and DuBois Schoonmaker.
She attended high school in Haverstraw, NY, and received a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in special education from Syracuse University. She married Jack Morton on graduation day in 1954. Visually impaired since birth due to retinitis pigmentosa, Betty became the first public elementary school teacher in New York who was blind.
She moved to Marysville, OH, in 1974 with her husband, an architect, and her daughter, Ann Lorraine. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, and was one of the founders of SERVE, the first volunteer agency in the county to respond to the needs of people who were visually impaired.
When the family relocated to Rochester, NY, in 1982, she turned to a career in human services. She became program director of TRIADD (To Reach and Inform About Developmental Disabilities), a community education program designed to increase awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disabilities. She later joined the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired as manager of consumer affairs.
She never considered blindness a tragedy in her life. Believing that it isn't what we don't have that matters, but what we have and what we do with it that really count, she became a sought-after public speaker. A survivor of breast cancer at age 36, she expanded her public speaking to include "Why Not Me," an inspirational message sharing her thoughts about living with cancer. Convinced that life could be entirely too serious, Betty's favorite thing was presenting programs on humor as the best medicine.
After retirement in 1997, she turned her efforts to writing, and was a member of the Plateau Writers Group in Fairfield Glade. She was also a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and PEO.
Survivors include her husband, Jack T. Morton of Fairfield Glade; daughter, Ann L. Nichols of Fairport, NY; and one granddaughter.
The family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of Cumberland County or the National Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation.
