Mary E. Bell
Jan. 28, 1920 - July 26, 2002
Mary Ellen Bell, 82, of Leonardtown, MD, formerly of Fairfield Glade, passed away July 26, 2002. A memorial service is being planned, to be held at Fairfield Glade Community Church.
Mrs. Bell was born Jan. 28, 1920, in Carroll County, OH, the daughter of Elmer T. and Florence L. Borland.
She was a homemaker, who enjoyed sewing and gardening. She resided for many years in Canton, OH, with her husband and three children, later retiring to Fairfield Glade. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Canton, and Fairfield Glade Community Church.
Survivors include her children, Bruce A. Bell of Hixson, TN, Beverly A. Price of Leonardtown, MD, and Rosemary E. French of Lancaster, PA; brother, Charles L. Borland of Minerva, OH; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Iris Kay, and her husband of 56 years, Calvin Henry.

Juanita M. Corum
July 23, 1932 - July 21, 2002
Juanita Mae Corum, 69, of Crossville, passed away July 21, 2002. Funeral services were conducted July 23 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Pastor Mike Ritzman officiated.
Mrs. Corum was born July 23, 1932, in Knox County, TN, the daughter of Charles and Lura Hall Collins.
She was a registered nurse, and a member of Believers Fellowship Church.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Calvin and Donna Corum, Ricky and Barbara Corum, all of Crossville, and Steve and Linda Corum of Knoxville; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Larry Hicks of Dallas, GA; daughters, Rosemary White of Benton, FL, and Janice Huckeba of Stockbridge, GA; sisters, Doris Lay and Mary Hargrove, both of Knoxville; 24 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Allen Corum; son, Thomas Corum; grandson, Jeffrey Busbin; and sister, Ruth Hickman.
Pallbearers were John Hicks, David Hicks, Marty Sharp, Les Lay, Jason McNealy and Dwayne Corum.

Russell P. Maas
Dec. 14, 1927 - May 17, 2002
Russell Paul Maas, 74, of Crossville, passed away May 17, 2002. Funeral services were conducted May 23 from the chapel of Swartz Funeral Home in Flint, MI, with burial in Crestwood Memorial Gardens in Flint.
Mr. Maas was born Dec. 14, 1927, in Wayne County, MI, the son of Edward Augustine and Emma Petoskey Maas.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Janeau, and was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge #1780 in Plymouth, MI, and Moose Lodge #782 in Ypsilanti, MI.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Maas of Crossville; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Pamela Maas of Plymouth, MI, Edward and Jane Maas of West Bloomfield, MI and William and Diedra Hensley of Swartz Creek, MI; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and James Trestain of West Branch, MI, Mary Ann Frederick of Houghton Lake, MI, Donna and Jeffrey Thayer of Garden City, MI, and Pamela and Steve Marme of Flint, MI; brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Alice Maas of Lakeland, FL; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Gordon Robinson, and Dorothy and Elton Bakewell, all of Lakeland; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Jerome L. Mortensen
Dec. 23, 1928 - July 24, 2002
Jerome Lavern Mortensen, 73, of Crossville, passed away July 24, 2002. A funeral Mass was conducted July 29 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Crossville, and a memorial service was held July 30 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Westchester, OH. Burial was in Union Township Cemetery in Westchester.
Mr. Mortensen was born Dec. 23, 1928, in Dannebrog, NE, the son of Arthur Leo and Ollie Wilson Mortensen.
He was a retired mechanical engineer, and a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Westchester for 28 years, and was a current member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. He was a member of the Elks, and past president of Hopewell Elementary PTA in Westchester.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Mortensen of Crossville; sons and daughters-in-law, Alan Mortensen of Cincinnati, OH, Philip and Pamela Mortensen of Westchester, Roger and Diane Mortensen of Dayton, OH, and Glen and Susan Mortensen of Hendersonville, TN; daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Paul Crowell of Melbourne, FL, Lisa and Steven Golden of Belleville, IL, Sharon and Jack Lewis of Honeybrook, PA, Marianne and Bryan Leininger of Cincinnati, and Joan and Jerry Mustain of Decatur, AL; sister, Vivian Burns of North Platte, NE; 20 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Mortensen; and granddaughter, Dannielle Garrett Sheehan.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church Building Fund.

Muriel J. Stultz

Muriel Joan Stultz, 78, of Cleveland, OH, formerly of Fairfield Glade, passed away July 29, 2002. A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. at Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Stultz was born July 22, 1924, in Indianapolis, IN.
She was an 18-year resident of Fairfield Glade, and was a 56-year member of Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Todd W. and Allison Stultz; and grandchildren, Kristen and Katherine Stultz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Stultz; and sister, Eleanor Earley.

Mary Catherine Crews Shepherd Hankins, 64, of Crossville, passed away July 22, 2002. Funeral services were conducted July 25 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Crews Family Cemetery. Bro. Glen Davenport officiated.
Mrs. Hankins was born Feb. 28, 1938, in Leesburg, FL, the daughter of John E. and Lola E. Carroll Crews.
She was a nursing assistant, and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Hankins of Crossville; son, Billy Shepherd of Crossville; daughters, Victoria Shepherd and Deborah Winton, both of Crossville; stepsons, Dusty Hankins and Rusty Hankins, both of Crossville; sister, Betty Burch of Crossville; brother, Jimmy Crews of Davenport, FL; grandchildren, Mark Winton, Felicia Winton, Jessica Floyd, Natasha Floyd, Jeremy Shepherd and Joshua Shepherd; and niece, Patricia Blackburn, and her daughter, Amanda Jones.
She was preceded in death by the father of her children, William H. Shepherd III; and son, Dean Edward Shepherd.

Sallie T.K. Franklin

Sallie Trobaugh Kinnaird Franklin, 80, of Baxter, TN, passed away July 25, 2002. Funeral services were conducted July 28 at Hunter Funeral Home in Sparta, TN, with burial in Kinnaird Cemetery. Johnny Fox officiated.
Mrs. Franklin was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Putnam County, TN, the daughter of Ira and Mary Chaffin Trobaugh.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Lillard Franklin of Baxter; sons, Eddie Lee Kinniard of LaVergne, TN, Arnold Thomas Kinnaird of Sparta and Jeff Kinnaird of Cookeville; brothers, J.D Trobaugh of Michigan, Lando E. Trobaugh of Sparta and Larry Curtis Trobaugh of Boiling Springs, KY; sisters, Willene Johnson of Sparta; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, David Kinnaird and Gary Kinnaird; sister, Connie Kinnaird; and husband, Elmer Lee Kinnaird.

Terrell F. Kittrell

Terrell F. "Terry" Kittrell, 62, of Waller, TX, formerly of Harriman, TN, passed away July 26, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted July 31 in Houston, TX, with full military honors by the VFW.
Mr. Kittrell was born Oct. 28, 1939, in Harriman, TN, the son of John and Edna Kittrell.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Survivors include his wife, Jan Kittrell of Waller, TX; daughters and sons-in-law, Kelly and John Davis of Wartburg, TN, and Karen and Robert Lawson of Kingston, TN; sisters, Diane K. Thelma C. Nixon

Thelma Clara Nixon, 87, of Tryon, NC, passed away July 25, 2002. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Hendersonville, NC. Interment will be in Musconetcong Valley Cemetery, Hampton, NJ.
Mrs. Nixon was born Dec. 14, 1914, in Delaware, NJ, the daughter of Richard Orton and Edith Kostenbader Osum.
She lived in Whitehouse Station, NJ, before moving to Crossville. She moved to Hendersonville, NC, in 1993, and to Tryon, NC, in 1997.
She was superintendent of mail services for American Cyanamid Corp. in Bound Brook, NJ, for 18 years before her retirement. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, NC, and a former member of Rockway Reformed Church in Whitehouse Station, NJ.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Britton of Tryon; sisters, Evelyn Winter of Hackettstown, NJ, and Vivian Kiley of Staunton, VA; grandchildren, Linda Fitz of Houston, TX, Chuck Britton of Columbus, NC, and Edward Britton of Powell, TN; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Schulte was born May 28, 1932, in Detroit, MI, the son of Walter and Christine Lavel Schulte.
He was a plant engineer for Ford Motor Co., and of the Catholic faith. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Danneels Schulte of Fairfield Glade; sons, Steven Schulte of Huntington Woods, MI, Mark Schulte of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Douglas Schulte of Nederland, TX, and Matthew Schulte of Marine City, MI; brothers, Leroy Schulte of Novine, MI, and Dennis Schulte of Metamora, MI; and grandchildren, Alexandra and Luke.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Christine Schulte; and brother, Marvin Schulte.

Mary L. Vitatoe

Mary Lee Vitatoe, 91, of Fairfield Glade, passed away July 27, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted today (July 30) at 2:30 p.m. at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mitch McClure officiating. Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be today from 1 to 2:30 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Vitatoe was born Nov. 14, 1910, in Crab Orchard, TN, the daughter of George and Lillie Smith.
She lived in Hixson, TN, for 26 years before returning to Cumberland County to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was a member of Middle Valley Church of God in Hixson.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Lorne Buck; brother and sister-in-law, Dallas "Henry" and Vernelle Smith; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Gregory and Rhonda Rymer and Scott and Susan Rymer; great-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Amanda Rymer; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Clay Vitatoe; sister, Ruth Robinson; and brothers, Bill Smith, Reed Smith and Hooper Smith.

Ms. Brink was born Sept. 12, 1922, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Carl and Marie Rohmann Schweitzer.
She was a retired U.S. Postal worker, and moved to Tennessee in 1978 from Illinois. She was a member of Crossville First United Methodist Church, and was involved with the Adult Literacy Program in Crossville.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, David and Susan Brink of Crossville; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Jessica and Cash Carmack of Crossville; grandson, Jacob Brink of Crossville; great-grandchildren, Caleb Charles and Gabriel Carmack; nephew and his wife, Frank and Marsha Schweitzer of Chandler, AZ; and cousin, Karl Rohmann of Belvidere, IL.

Dale W. Clemenz

Dale Wayne Clemenz, 61, of Fairfield Glade, passed away July 19, 2002. A memorial Mass was held July 22 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, with Father Gregory Boisvert officiating. Burial was in Crossville City Cemetery.
Mr. Clemenz was born Dec. 29, 1940, in Akron, OH, the son of John and Beulah Marshall Clemenz.
He had been general foreman at Great Lakes Steel Co., and was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Marines, and was a member of Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree, in Wyandotte, MI.
Survivors include his wife, Tracie Susette Clemenz of Fairfield Glade; son, John Clemenz of Portland, ME; daughter, Tracie Ann Clemenz Hammond of Detroit, MI; brother, Walt Clemenz of Akron, OH; grandchildren, Chelsea Hammond, Tyler Hammond, Jennifer Clemenz, Alexys Clemenz and Brandon Clemenz; and special cousins, Dorothy Marshall, Norman Marshall, William Marshall, Charles Marshall and James Marshall.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald Clemenz and Warren Clemenz; and sister, Martha Lance.

Dr. James A. Lee, 71, of Crossville, passed away July 16, 2002. Funeral services were conducted July 19 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Archie Emerson, Bro. Billy Smith and Bro. Larry Lee officiated, with special music by Faith Baptist Tabernacle Quartet of Jamestown, TN.
Bro. Lee was born May 29, 1931, in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada, the son of William E. and Jeanne Valleau Lee.
He was pastor of Baptist Tabernacle in Crossville for a total of 30 years, was a well-known evangelist, and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Denman Lee of Crossville; sons, David Lee of Indianapolis, IN, Mike Lee of Forest Virginia, TN, and Larry Lee of Smyrna, TN; daughter, Sharon Brewer of Crossville; sisters, Bernice Lee of Ajax, Ontario, Canada, and Irene Champlin of Salt Lake City, UT; 13 grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Jared Lee, Jonathan Lee, Josh Brewer, Carson Lee, Roland Kesterson and Jared Kesterson. Honorary pallbearer was Jordan Brewer.

Gregory Lynn Lewis, 43, of Crossville, passed away July 20, 2002. Funeral services were conducted July 23 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Woody Cemetery. Bro. Robert Melton Jr. officiated.
Mr. Lewis was born April 30, 1959, in McKinney, TX, the son of Bobbie and Mary E. Roach Lewis.
He was a factory worker for Delbar, and was of the Baptist faith.

Lewis of Crossville; son, Ruben Scarlett of Knoxville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy and Helen Lewis, and Tracy and Gay Lewis, all of Crossville, and Bobby Lewis of El Paso, TX; and sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Lonnie Owens of Crossville.

Mr. Allen was born Sept. 11, 1919, in Manchester, KY, the son of Green G. and Lula Abnes Allen.

Alberta Nina Gibson, 83, of Crossville, passed away July 16, 2002. Funeral services were conducted July 19 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Big Lick Cemetery. The Rev. Pete Ullman and the Rev. Mike Smathers officiated.
Mrs. Gibson was born Dec. 18, 1918, in Cumberland County, the daughter of Vance and Amy Sevier Burgess.
She was a school teacher, and a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Everett L. Gibson of Crossville; daughter, Mary Nina Davis of Clarksville, TN; brother, Marvin K. Burgess of Columbia, SC; sister, Letha Matthews of Louisville, KY; grandsons, Luke and Jay Davis; and granddaughters, Madison and Charlee Ann.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Estille Burgess and Eucle Burgess; and sister, Violet Wood.

William "Bill" Henry Keagle, 60 of Crossville, passed away July 14, 2002. Funeral services were conducted July 16 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Slate Springs Cemetery. Elders Leslie Goss, Roger Hyder and Harold Keagle officiated.
Mr. Keagle was born April 6, 1942, in Cumberland County, the son of Peter P. and Nora Cox Keagle.
He was employed at Monticello Canning Co.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Evans Keagle of Crossville; son, Billy Joe Keagle of Crossville; stepson, Steve Davis of Jamestown, TN; brothers, Harold Keagle, Bobby Keagle, David Keagle and Albert Keagle, all of Crossville; sister, Shirley Bradford of Crossville; and grandchildren, Amanda and Sandra Keagle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Nora Cox Keagle; and brothers, Kenneth Keagle and Ed Keagle.

Beatrice Henderson Terry Threet, 82, of Crossville, passed away July 19, 2002. Graveside services were held July 22 at Asbury Cemetery, with the Rev. Wayne Markham officiating.
Mrs. Threet was born Jan. 18, 1920, in Knox County, TN, the daughter of Fred and Parley Henderson.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Roosevelt Threet of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Bea Terry of Fairfield Glade; daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Jack Tisdale of Knoxville; stepsons, Donald Threet, Ronald Threet, Roger Threet and Charlie Threet; stepdaughters, Carol Simmons, Patricia Olson and Shirley Duvall; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mack and Freddy Hodge and Jim and Lillian Fox, all of Knoxville, and Lena French of Lockport, IL; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a retired driver for Chrysler Corporation, and a member of Homestead Church of Christ.

Richard Weeden, 67, of Fairfield Glade, passed away July 17, 2002. A celebration of life service was held July 20 at Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Max Mayo and the Rev. Lanita Pride officiating. Special music was by Jack Bittle and Kaycie Sharrow, with reflections by the Rev. Ed McClellan, Nicole DuVernay and Heidi Weeden. Burial was in the church columbarium.
Mr. Weeden was born May 31, 1935, in Minneapolis, MN.
He was retired from General Motors Corp., Fisher Body Division CPC Group, Warren, MI. He was also a retired international representative of the UAW International Union, Detroit, MI. He was a past worshipful master of S. Ward Lodge #62 F&AM, Marine City, MI, Scottish Rite, Valley of Detroit Shrine, Detroit OES.

She was a cook at Hardee's, a former nurse's aide at Johnson Health Care Center, and a member of Daysville Church of Christ.

Mr. Todd was born Dec. 7, 1917, in Cumberland County, the son of Gerome Franklin and Laura Mae Ashburn Todd.

William E. Balch Jr.
Nov. 9, 1929 - July 7, 2002
William E. Balch Jr., 72, of Fairfield Glade, passed away July 7, 2002. Funeral services were held July 11 at Fairfield Glade Community Church, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. The Rev. Dale Marshall and the Rev. Thomas Eckert officiated.
Mr. Balch was born Nov. 9, 1929, in Carter Nine, OK, the son of William and Mary Balch.
At age 9, he moved with his family to Beecher City, IL, where his love of sports developed. Excelling in baseball and basketball, he attended Eastern Illinois University on a baseball scholarship, earning a bachelor's degree in physical education, and first realized that he wanted to be a coach. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and served on the Saipan aircraft carrier.
Following his Navy discharge, Mr. Balch played minor league baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers, then earned his master's degree at the University of Illinois. While at U of I, he was assistant coach in both basketball and football, and began his lifelong joy of following Illinois sports teams.
After graduation he became head coach at Bryon High School in Bryon, IL. He joined State Farm Insurance Co. in Effingham, IL, as an agent, then served in Decatur and Bloomington, IL. In Bloomington, he moved to the Agency Training Department, and was one of the six original agency directors. He was fondly nicknamed "The Coach" by many at State Farm and retired after 37 1/2 years of service.
Mr. Balch was an avid golfer and loved all sports. He traveled extensively with his family, and enjoyed antiquing and visiting with family and friends. He was an active member and Sunday school teacher at Fairfield Glade Community Church, and a longtime volunteer for Hospice. He was a 33rd Degree Mason.
Bill was a very loving and loved man and will be greatly missed by his family, extended family, friends and community. We who are left have been truly blessed to have him as our "Coach" during his lifetime.
Survivors include his wife, Noreen Balch; children, Kerry Balch of Richardson, TX, Denice Lamb of Stanardsville, VA, Lynn Stafford of Walker, LA, and Kayla Short of Wapella, IL; stepsons, Tom Barnes of Fontana, WI, Steven Barnes of Rosendale, WI, David Barnes of Chicago, IL, and Jim Barnes of Germantown, WI; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Balch; first wife, Patricia Balch; and sisters, Cleo Kalber and Frances Anderson.

He was raised in Eaton Township, OH, and had resided in Elyria for the past 25 years. He had been employed for the past 25 years at the Ford Motor Co. plant in Lorain, OH, as an assembly line worker. He was a member of UAW Local #425 in Lorain.

He was well known around the Southeast for his cattle brokerage, being co-owner of Young Livestock Company of Knoxville, and owner of Plateau Livestock Exchange in Crossville. He was a member of Central Baptist Church of Bearden, TN, and on the board of directors of First National Bank of Loudon County, TN.
Survivors include his daughter, DiAnne Young McMillin; sister, Mary Young Maples of Lenoir City; brother and sister-in-law, Eddie and Loretta Young of Knoxville; grandchildren, Robert Woodson McMillin, Kenneth Young McMillin and Louise Callaway McMillin, all of Knoxville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mrs. Stephens was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Georgia, the daughter of John M. and Elmina Williams Sticher.
She was a beauty shop inspector for the state of Tennessee, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her daughter, Pat Williams of Crossville; three grandsons; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Stevens.

Willie C. Burgess
Sept. 16, 1922 - June 27, 2002
Willie Clarence Burgess, 79, of Crossville, passed away June 27, 2002. Funeral services were conducted June 29 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Ralph Reagan officiated.
Mr. Burgess was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Cumberland County, the son of James Mike and Flora Mae Wyatt Burgess.
He was a farmer, and a member of the Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Reagan Burgess of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law, James Richard and Margaret Burgess of Huntsville, AL; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Tim Sherrill of Crossville; sisters, Rhoda Findley and Della Dunbar, both of Crossville; and grandchildren, Ben, Blaine, Emily and Amy.
Pallbearers were Ben Burgess, Blaine Burgess, Tim Reagan, Matt Reagan, Thom McMann and Randell Reagan.

Billie Jo Collins, 72, of Crossville, passed away June 28, 2002. A memorial service was held July 1 in the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Pastor Linus Vaughn officiating.
Mrs. Collins was born Dec. 16, 1929, in Kansas City, KS, the daughter of Robert and Bessie Guy Rice.
She was a sales clerk, and was of the Nazarene faith.
Survivors include her husband, Royce Collins of Crossville; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Mary Thomason of Crossville, and Michael and Dewey Mathis of Las Vegas, NV; and daughters and sons-in-law, Rosa and Chuck Bement of Flagstaff, AZ, Terry Blackmer of Sarasota, FL, and Jacquline and Gary Bundy of Athens, TN.

Mary A. Kirkpatrick

Mary Ann Kirkpatrick, 71, of Crossville, passed away June 25, 2002. Funeral services were conducted June 27 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Comments were by Mrs. Kirkpatrick's son, Levi Kirkpatrick.
Mrs. Kirkpatrick was born Jan. 20, 1931, in Blue Ridge, GA, the daughter of Thomas Marshall and Liz Ann Cole Nickelson.
She was a factory worker, and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Wanda Kay and John Pugh of Crossville; sons, Victor Eugene Kirkpatrick of Chattanooga, Lee Roy Kirkpatrick of Georgia and James Levi Kirkpatrick III of Crossville; brother, James Nickelson of Cornellia, GA; sisters, Irene Bailey and Liz Henderson, both of Georgia; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Kirkpatrick Jr.; brothers, Clarence "Red" Nickelson, Earnest Nickelson and Lester Glen Nickelson; and sisters, Elsie Smith, Winnie Mae Flowers, Bertie Mae and Lila Nation.
Pallbearers were Mrs. Kirkpatrick's grandsons, Kenny W. Bruce, Mark Long, Brent Kirkpatrick, V. Kirkpatrick Jr., James Kirkpatrick IV and Jason P. Garner Jr.

Jeffrey L. Pyles

Jeffrey Lynn Pyles, 38, of Crossville, passed away June 25, 2002. Funeral services were conducted June 29 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Haleys Grove Cemetery, Crab Orchard. Mike Garrett officiated, and also provided special music.
Mr. Pyles was born Aug. 10, 1963, in Crossville, the son of Bobby Pyles and Virginia Sue Edward Pyles.
He graduated as an honor student from Rhea County High School, and was offered a scholarship from a Chattanooga college to play basketball. He served in the Tennessee National Guard in the early 1980s. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his daughter, Amber Swafford of Crossville; parents, Bobby Pyles and Virginia Sue Edward Pyles of Crossville; sister, Connie Lee of Crossville; brothers, C.J. Pyles and Robbie Pyles, both of Crossville; nieces, Courtney and Brittany Lee of Crossville; and grandmother, Verdie Pyles of Crossville.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jessie and Violia Pugh Edwards and Woodrow Pyles.
Pallbearers were Tony Amonett, Jerry Edwards, Jimmy Edwards, Roy Edwards, Steve Findley, Daniel McKeoun, Donald Hyder, Dennis Kirkland, Micheal Wayne, C.J. Pyles, Robbie Pyles and Rocky Smith. Honorary pallbearer was Buck Edwards.

Edward Upchurch Sr., 88, of Waverly, TN, passed away June 25, 2002. Funeral services were conducted June 29 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Newton Cemetery. Bro. Noble Wright officiated.
Mr. Upchurch was born Sept. 12, 1913, in Gainesboro, TN, the son of Barlow and Canada Lee Fortner Upchurch.
He was an electrician for Ford Automobile Co., and a member of the Church of Christ. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1929 to 1933.
Survivors include his sons, Edward Upchurch Sr. of Nashville and Joel Upchurch of Orlando, FL; brother, Joseph Huber of Nashville; sister, Mildred Wooten of Nashville; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Wyatt Upchurch; daughters, Janet M. Oats and Carolyn Upchurch; and brother, Silas Upchurch.
Pallbearers were Lemuel Telford, James Upchurch, Bill Huber, Bob Lewis, Bob Fowler and Steve Ledford.

Cyrus M. Gore
Feb. 12, 1924 - June 23, 2002
Cyrus Milton Gore, 78, of Crossville, passed away June 23, 2002. Funeral services were conducted June 26 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. The Rev. Fay Tucker officiated. DAV Chapter 32 provided military honors of presentation of the flag, 21-gun salute and "Taps."
Mr. Gore was born Feb. 12, 1924, in Hillrose, CO, the son of Cyrus Day and Minnie Wright Gore.
He was an oil and gas inspector for the state of Tennessee. He served in the U.S. Army-Air Force during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Eggers Gore of Crossville; stepdaughters, Betty Shuburg of Crossville and Ruby Carr of Elkhart, IN; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Tolly Gore of Walden, CO; grandchildren, Clifton Carr and Kathryn Looschen; and great-granddaughter, Kassandra Looschen.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Clarence H. Gore; and sisters, Pauline Ward and Beulah Carlton.
Pallbearers were members of DAV Chapter 32.

Paul K. Grey Jr.

Paul Kenyon Grey Jr., 36, of Crossville, passed away June 12, 2002. Funeral services were conducted June 19 at Howell-Lussi Funeral Home in Wilkes-Barre, PA, with burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Carverton, PA. The Rev. Donald Weltmer officiated.
Mr. Grey was born Jan. 12, 1966, in Wilkes-Barre, PA, the son of Paul Kenyon Sr. and Anita Gregorio Grey.
Survivors include his father, Paul Grey Sr. of Lansing, TN; mother and stepfather, Anita and Joseph Dougherty of Wilkes-Barre; son, Anthony Grey of Peebles, OH; brothers, Michael Grey of Crossville and Gary Grey of Nanticoke, PA; sisters, Christinia Grey and Angel Sobeck, both of Nanticoke, PA, and Kathy Dougherty of Wilkes-Barre; half sister Nancy of Harvey's Lake, PA; and special friend, Cindy Gibson of Crossville.

Fred Wallace Northrup, 95, of Sunbright, TN, passed away June 27, 2002. Funeral services were conducted June 28 at Schubert Funeral Home in Wartburg, TN, with the Rev. Luther Massengill officiating. A graveside service was held June 29 at Pleasant Ridge Church Cemetery.
Mr. Northrup was born April 29, 1907, in Morgan County, TN, the son of Walter Norm and Sylvia F. Northrup.
Survivors include his sisters, Addie Voiles and Velva Johnson, both of Dayton, OH; sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Helen Northrup of Mississippi, Thomas and Caroline Northrup of Kentucky, and Vaughn Northrup of Sunbright; daughters and sons-in-law, Altheiah and Dennis Ray Jones of Deer Lodge, Judy and Phill Shannon, and Robbie Stewart, all of Sunbright, and Doris Sue Hughes of Ohio; 28 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends; and special friend, Jack Brown of Sunbright.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Flarce Northrup; brothers, Melvin, Leonard, Osley, Sam, Virgil, Walter and Kenneth; sisters, Rosa, Mary, Gertie and Dorothy; sons, J.B. and Billy; and daughter, Ila Mae McLin.
