DR. NORMAN ROY ATNIP
Dr. Norman Roy Atnip, 86, of Smithville, TN, passed away July 18, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 21 from the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home in Smithville. Bro. Bobby Colver and Archie King officiated. Dr. N. Max Atnip delivered the eulogy.
Masonic services were July 20 at the funeral home. Burial with military honors was in Whorton Springs Cemetery in Smithville.
Dr. Atnip was born April 11, 1915, in DeKalb County, TN, the son of David J. and Lassie Mai McGee Atnip.
He was a retired doctor of chiropractic. He graduated in 1937 from the National University of Health Sciences (formerly the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago) and began his practice in Smithville in 1939. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as past president of the Tennessee Chiropractic Association and the Federation of Tennessee Chiropractors. He was a past president of the Exchange Club of Smithville and a past president of the Smithville Lions Club. He was a past president and director of the Smithville Junior Chamber of Commerce.
He was a past director of the National Chiropractic Association and the American Chiropractic Association. He also served on the board of directors of the Center Hill Broadcasting Corporation (WJLE Radio) and was a founding director of The Citizens Bank of Smithville. He was a member of the National College of Chiropractic Alumni Association and served as team physician for many years for the DeKalb County High School athletic teams.
Dr. Atnip was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of World War II. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Master Mason and an elder in the Smithville Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Sara Jannette Cantrell Atnip; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Robert Roy and Guylene Atnip of Smithville, and Dr. N. Max and Patti Atnip of Cookeville; sister, Frances Pendarvis of Livingston, TN; grandchildren, Lisa Tramel and Tara Atnip, both of Smithville, Robert Atnip Jr. of Shelbyville, TN, Jared Atnip of Panama City, FL, and Rebecca Vincent, Jennifer Atnip and Cryste Atnip, all of Cookeville; and great-grandchildren, Chase Tramel and Caleb Tramel, both of Smithville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Lassie Atnip; sister, Marguerite Puckett; and brothers, Dr. Eric C. Atnip and David J. Atnip Jr.
Pallbearers were Wayne Atnip, Barry Atnip, Dr. Alan Atnip, David Martin, Billy Martin and David Wytt Davis.

HARRY EUGENE BROCK
Harry Eugene Brock, 88, of Sparta, passed away July 21, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted today at 11 a.m. at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Old Bon Air Cemetery.
Mr. Brock was born June 10, 1913, in Sparta.
He was employed with Crosslin Homes.
Survivors include his daughters, Joyce Ware of Sparta and Gail Majewski of Pulaski, WI; son, Gene Brock of Crossville; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

RAMOLA J. LAWSON
Ramola J. Lawson, 73, of Fairfield Glade, passed away July 12, 2001. A memorial service will be conducted Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. at Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church, with Ed McClellan, Wayne Benson and Dean Orr officiating.
Mrs. Lawson was born May 15, 1928, in Niles, MI, the daughter of Chauncey and Marie Warner Reynolds.
She was a retired secretary of the YMCA in Fort Wayne, IN. She moved to Fairfield Glade in 1990, and was a member of Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church and the Fairfield Glade Ladies Golf League.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Lawson of Fairfield Glade; sons, Gary Thomas Lawson of Fort Wayne and Barry R. Lawson of Monticello, IN; daughter, Cynthia J. Wetzel of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren, Tonya Wilson of Gulfport, MS, Stacy Haskins of Noblesville, IN, Corey Lawson of Lafayette, IN, Mikala Wetzel of Rochester, MI, Chase Kohne of East Lansing, MI, and Micah Kohne and Alison Kohne, both of Monticello, IN; and great-grandchildren, Mason Wilson and Sydney, both of Gulfport, MS.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chauncey and Marie Reynolds; and brother, Ronald Reynolds.

DAVID O'RORKE SR.
David O'Rorke Sr., 76, of Fairfield Glade, passed away July 20, 2001. A memorial service was held July 23 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, with Deacon Mark Fredrick officiating.
Mr. O'Rorke was born April 27, 1925, in Carteret, NJ, the son of Dennis and Johanna O'Rorke.
He was an office manager, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was past post commander of American Legion Post 248 of Middlesex County, NJ.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine O'Rorke of Fairfield Glade; daughter, Nancy Ellen O'Rorke of Colonia, NJ; sons, Kevin David O'Rorke of Colonia, Thom Martin O'Rorke of Plainsboro, NJ, and David Coleman O'Rorke Jr. of Erwing Township, NJ; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Johanna O'Rorke; and brother, William O'Rorke.

OPAL GARRETT
Opal Garrett, 83, of Monterey, passed away July 24, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with burial in Welch Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Kevin Phillips will officiate.
Mrs. Garrett was born Oct. 28, 1917, in Fentress County, TN, the daughter of Porter and Stella Woods Beaty.
She operated Monterey Auto Supply along with her husband and son, and was a member of Monterey First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Denver Garrett of Monterey; son, Denny Garrett of Monterey; brother and sister-in-law, Wallace and Jean Beaty of the Roslin community in Fentress County; four grandchildren, Chris, Corey, Caleb and Denise; and two great-grandchildren, Josh and Elsie.

OPAL EDNA SMITH
Opal Edna Smith, 89, of Crossville, passed away July 14, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 18 at Wilson Funeral Home in Charleston, WV, with burial in Floral Hills Cemetery in Sissonville, WV. The Rev. Keith Monday officiated, with special music by the Grapevine Church Quartet.
Mrs. Smith was born Oct. 3, 1911, in Sissonville, WV, the daughter of William and Fannie Humphrey Reese.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Victory Advent Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Arbutus "Boots" Taylor of Crossville, Elizabeth Wickline Issel of Satellite Beach, FL, Linda Hoover of Dunbar, WV, Mary Pauley and Martha Vannater, both of Charleston, WV, and Janice Vaughn of Amarillo, TX; sons, Olie Jack Smith and George Smith, both of Elkview, WV, Larry Smith of Charleston, WV, and Gene Smith of Dayton, OH; brother, Ira Reese of Charleston, WV; 29 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Uhl Smith; daughters, Betty Parsons and Geraldean Taylor; and son, Dorsel Smith.

RICHARD COLE DEVLIN
Richard Cole Devlin, 59, of Maynardville, TN, passed away July 21, 2001. No services are planned.
Mr. Devlin was born Dec. 5, 1941, in Jersey City, NJ.
He was a truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Bette Devlin of Englewood, FL; daughter, Lynelle Devlin of Englewood, FL; sons, Rick Devlin Jr. and Robbie Devlin, both of Indiana; mother, Adelle Hallak of Port Saint Lucie, FL; sister, Kathy Reynolds of Greenbelt, MD; brothers, Bill Devlin of Dunedin, FL, Jack Devlin of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Gary Devlin of Maryland; and Rita Collins of Maynardville.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Devlin.

G. ROBERT JOHNSON
G. Robert Johnson, 71, of Fairfield Glade, went to join his Lord and Savior July 22, 2001. A memorial service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church in Fairfield Glade July 30 at 2 p.m.
Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 26, 1929, in Greensburg, PA.
He spent his early years in the Greensburg area, and started his career in radio at the age of 14. He continued his association with the entertainment and media world for over 52 years. He attended St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA, and is a class of 1950 alumnus.
Mr. Johnson managed media properties in the Northeast and Florida during the 1960s and '70s, and was also a partner in the ownership of a radio property in Troy, NY in the mid 1970s. During these years, he had the opportunity to meet and interview many entertainment notables. He enjoyed working with Chuck Mangione, Rod Serling, Dolly Parton, Joe Paterno, Arnold Palmer and many others.
In 1972, when Hurricane Agnes devastated the southern tier of New York, Mr. Johnson organized an area-wide crisis network that allowed communication among various community agencies. He was formally recognized by then-President Nixon for this extraordinary accomplishment.
In 1976, Mr. Johnson accepted the opportunity to work with the American Advertising Federation in Washington DC. He continued with them for over seven years, traveling across the country as a marketing executive and membership vice president.
Throughout his life, Mr. Johnson maintained a vibrant interest in and love of the arts, especially theater and music. He had an extensive theatrical resume that included lead and supporting roles in regional theater productions of Hatful of Rain, A Streetcar Named Desire, Dear Friends, Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, 1776! and most recently in the Cumberland County Playhouse feature Over the River and Through the Woods. He was also a featured narrator and soloist with a variety of secular and religious choruses and choirs.
He attained the 32nd degree of the Scottish Rite of Masons in the Binghamton, NY temple. After his retirement in 1995, he moved to Fairfield Glade, where he was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church, many community committees, the Cumberland County Playhouse and the Students/Mentor in Learning Experiences (SMILE) program.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, LaVerne Johnson; children, Debra Horton of Frederick, MD, R. Marc Johnson of Martinsburg, WV, and Pamela Collins of Whitney Point, NY; and grandchildren, Aaron M. Horton, Anson M. Horton, Jonathan M. Collins and Daniel J. Collins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mr. Johnson's name may be directed to Christ Lutheran Church, Cumberland County Playhouse or the SMILE program.

HUGH EDWARD KEMMER
Hugh Edward Kemmer, 91, of Rockwood, passed away July 20, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 23 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Grassy Cove Cemetery. Bro. Charles Lyles officiated.
Mr. Kemmer was born July 12, 1910, the son of Charles and Nettie Parham Kemmer.
He lived most of his life as a farmer in the Grassy Cove community of Crossville, and was a retired manager of the Crossville Agricultural Extension Services office. He and his wife, Sarah, moved to Rockwood in 1989. He was a member of the Asbury Chapel United Methodist Church in Rockwood.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Sarah Blaylock Kemmer of Rockwood; daughters and sons-in-law, Eva Jeanetta and Clarence Eugene Hamby of Rockwood, and Barbara Jean and Ron Ireson of Jonesboro, TN; son, Andrew Ralph Kemmer of Rockwood; sister, Bea Knox of Crossville; grandchildren and their spouses, Deb and Gary Beeler, Dana Kirkland and James Kemmer, all of Rockwood, Donna Wade of Seymour, TN, Valerie and Mark Loy of Binghamton, NY, and Andy Kemmer and Patricia Kemmer, both of Crossville; 16 great-grandchildren and their spouses; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Nettie L. Roysdon, 86, of Jamestown, TN, passed away July 23, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted today, July 25, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Jennings Funeral Home in Jamestown, with burial in Sharp Place Cemetery.
Mrs. Roysdon was born March 3, 1915, in Fentress County, TN, the daughter of Virgle and Sylvia Slaven.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her daughters, Esther Davis and Angela Jewell Dean Wood, both of Crossville, Cordia Russell of Monticello, KY, and Trish Boyer of Kingston, TN; sons, Elzo Roysdon and David Roysdon, both of Crossville, and Clarence Roysdon and James Roysdon, both of Jamestown; 41 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Eva Lorene Stevenson, 80, of Fairfield Glade, passed away July 16, 2001. Funeral services and burial were July 19 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Erlanger, KY.
Mrs. Stevenson was born Jan. 2, 1921, in Grays, KY.
She was a nursing home administrator.
Survivors include her husband, William T. Stevenson of Fairfield Glade; sons, Charles R. Stevenson of Alexandria, KY, and William W. MORRIS EUGENE TURNER
Morris Eugene "Gene" Turner, 68, of Crossville, passed away July 21, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 23 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Turner Cemetery. Dr. Dan D. Haskins Jr. officiated, with special music by Ed Cagle.
Mr. Turner was born Feb. 17, 1933, in Crossville, the son of Perry Lawrence Sr. and Mary Harding Turner.
He was a real estate broker, city councilman and past district governor of Rotary #6780, and he was a member of Homesteads Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Ella Stubbs Turner of Crossville; daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Larry Taylor of Cookeville, and Cindy and Jeff Brown of Crossville; mother, Mary Turner of Crossville; brothers, Perry Turner Jr. of Crossville and Ronnie Turner of Cookeville; sisters, Johnnie Sexton and Abby Mifflin, both of Crossville; and grandchildren, Blake Turner Taylor, Rachel Taylor and Katie Brown.

Ruth Elizabeth Mackey, 77, of Crossville, passed away July 11, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 14 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Paul Fox officiated, with special music by the Whitson Church Chapel Church of Christ youth group.
Mrs. Mackey was born April 20, 1924, in Orville, OH, the daughter of Walter and Mary Elizabeth Bowers Mangle.
She was a retired cook at Ramada Inn, and of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jane and J.D. Barnes of Crossville, and Becky and Mark Vinson of Cookeville; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Pat Mackey of Shreve, OH; son, Howard Mackey of Sparta; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; niece, Nancy Stouffer of Glenmont, OH; and nephews, Walter Kline of Loudonville, OH, and Robert Kline of Wooster, OH.

Sarah Frances Stepp, 53, of Sparta, passed away July 10, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 14 at Bible Baptist Church. Bro. Donald Wattenbarger officiated.
Ms. Stepp was born Jan. 6, 1948, in Crab Orchard, TN, the daughter of George Sr. and Jessie Amonette Stepp.
She was a restaurant cook, and of the Baptist faith.

Mrs. Wright was born Feb. 2, 1921, in Woodburn, OR, the daughter of Clay and Elizabeth Iva Worthing Isham.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Bible Methodist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Janice Lellian Prentice of Marysville, WA, and Patricia Joy Wright of Crossville; sons, William K. Wright Jr. of Estacada, OR, Gerald L. Wright of Crossville and Keith J. Jimmy Evin Christopher Sr., 56, of Rockwood, passed away July 12, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 14 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Bro. Charles Christopher and Bro. Buddy Christopher officiated, with special music by Mark Bonham and Will Gouge.
Mr. Christopher was born May 2, 1945, in Anderson County, TN, the son of Francis "Frank" and Christine Griffin Christopher.
He was an employee in railroad maintenance for Spino, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his mother, Christine Christopher of Crossville; son, Buddy Christopher of Harriman, TN; stepdaughter, Shawn Nuckels of Rockwood; stepson, Hank Moss of Westel, TN; sisters, Carolyn Ford and Pat Jared, both of Sparta; brothers, Harold Christopher, Bobby Christopher and Terry Christopher, all of Crossville; and Marvin Christopher of Crab Orchard; and five grandchildren.

Beulah Lee King, 84, of Crossville, passed away July 12, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 16 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory, with burial in Tolletts Chapel Cemetery. Gary Howard officiated.
Mrs. King was born Aug. 29, 1916, in Monroe County, TN, the daughter of William and Verdie Berry.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her sons, James King and David King, both of Crossville; daughter, Carrie Lee Boggs of Jamestown, TN; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Verdie Berry; and her husband, James M. King.

CHARLES McPHEE
Charles McPhee, 70, of Crossville, passed away July 11, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 14 from the chapel of Burris Funeral Home, with Fay Tucker officiating. Special music was by Tim Smith.
Mr. McPhee was born July 18, 1930, in Boston, MA, the son of Ernie Cutler and Mary McPhee.
He was a quality control inspector with General Motors, and he also worked for J.R. Distributors in Crossville. He was an active Republican, and a member of Homestead United Methodist Church. He was second vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police of Jacksonville, FL, and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police of Tennessee. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Jacksonville, and a member of Scottish Rite and the Shriners.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy McPhee of Crossville; daughters, Lora Nelson of Las Vegas, NV, Janice Hammersmith of Harvard, IL, and Sharon Zieman of Franklin, TN; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

EVA ERNEST SCARBROUGH
Eva Ernest Scarbrough, 71, of Crossville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 10, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 13 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Pastor B.J. Brown officiated, with Pastor James A. Lee assisting. Special music was by Maggie Clark and Everett Wyatt.
Mrs. Scarbrough was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Cincinnati, OH, the daughter of Jesse and Irene Ernest.
She was retired from General Telephone, where she worked for 35 years as an operator. She was a member of the Gospel Baptist Tabernacle.

Ruth Elizabeth Mackey, 77, of Crossville, passed away July 11, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 14 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Paul Fix officiated, with special music by the Whitson Church Chapel Church of Christ youth group.
Mrs. Mackey was born April 20, 1924, in Orville, OH, the daughter of Walter and Mary Elizabeth Bowers Mangle.
She was a retired cook at Ramada Inn, and of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jane and J.D. Barnes of Crossville, and Becky and Mark Vinson of Cookeville; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Pat Mackey of Shreve, OH; son, Howard Mackey of Sparta; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; niece, Nancy Stouffer of Glenmont, OH; and nephews, Walter Kline of Loudonville, OH, and Robert Kline of Wooster, OH.
She was preceded in death by her son, Rickey Dean Mackey; sister and brother-in-law, Ilabell and Jess Kline; and nephew, Tuffy Kline.

Eva Ernest Scarbrough, 72, of Crossville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 10, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 13 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Pastor B.J. Brown officiated, with Pastor James A. Lee assisting. Special music was by Maggie Clark and Everett Wyatt.
Mrs. Wyatt was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Cincinnati, OH, the daughter of Jesse and Irene Ernest.
She was retired from General Telephone, where she worked for 35 years as an operator. She was a member of the Gospel Baptist Tabernacle.
Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Gene Wyatt; nephew, Steve Wyatt of Hixson, TN; niece, Angie Ernest of Crossville; and great-nieces, Hannah Wyatt and Hayley Wyatt, both of Hixson, TN.

Anna Pauline Cumby Young, 78, of Sparta, passed away July 14, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted today, July 17, at 11 a.m. at Hunter Funeral Home in Sparta, with burial in Highland Cemetery. David Lee England will officiate.
Mrs. Young was born Jan. 25, 1923, in Cumberland County, the daughter of Casto and Elsie Hyder Cumby.
She was a homemaker.

Scottie Alan Lowe, 18, of Crossville, passed away July 4, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 7 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Scottie was born Dec. 28, 1982, in Cumberland County, the son of Alex Sanders and Annette Lowe.
He was a student, and a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Annette and Tony Barnwell of Crossville; father and stepmother, Alex and Sabrina Sanders of Crossville; brother, Ryan Barnwell of Crossville; stepbrother and stepsister, Cory and Kindra Sanders; grandparents, Robert and Mildred Lowe, Eddie and Mary Jane Barnwell, and Chester Copeland, all of Crossville; aunts and uncles, Eugene and Sherri Lowe, Lynda and Larry Davis, Ed and Wanda Miller and Albert and Barbara Lowe; 11 first cousins; and four second cousins.

Suzanne C. Wacker, 24, of Pleasant Hill, passed away July 4, 2001. A memorial service was held July 8 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with Butch Stapleton officiating.
Ms. Wacker was born Jan. 19, 1977, in Voorhees, NJ, the daughter of Karl Wacker and Kathleen Davenport.
She was a certified nurse's aide, and of the Methodist faith.

Mrs. Lockwood was born May 24, 1933, in Pikeville, TN, the daughter of Lewis and Nora Scarbrough.

ROBERT C. MORLEY
Robert C. Morley, 76, of Fairfield Glade, passed away July 7, 2001. A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, July 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, with Father Greg Boisvert officiating.
Mr. Morley was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Columbus, OH, the son of Albert and Ida Miller Morley.
He was a retired engineer, and of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Morley of Fairfield Glade; and son and daughter, Bruce and Anita, both of Massachusetts.

ROBERT STEINKAMP
Robert "Bob" Steinkamp, DDS, 78, of the Cumberland Cove community near Monterey, passed away July 5, 2001. A funeral Mass was held July 8 from St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. Father Patrick Brownell was the celebrant.
Dr. Steinkamp was born Jan. 10, 1923, in Galesburg, IL, the son of Clarence and Dorothy Steinkamp.
He graduated from Marmion Military Academy, Aurora College and Loyola Dental School, and served as a flight instructor in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war he practiced dentistry in Hinckley, IL, for 37 years. He served on the DeKalb County Housing Authority in Illinois, was on the Hinckley Town Board and was active in the Illinois Lung Association.
After retirement, Dr. Steinkamp and his wife, Cathy, moved to the Cumberland Cove community. He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Cathleen "Cathy" Cooper Steinkamp of the Cumberland Cove community; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Karen Gouin Steinkamp of Apopka, FL, and Thomas and Donna Hermann Steinkamp of Brentwood, TN; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Douglas Sipes of Oakbrook Terrace, IL, and Anne and Charles Parham of Old Hickory, TN; sister, Phyllis Bales of Aurora, IL; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Margery Nurnberg; and brother, John Steinkamp, MD.

Joe Tom Cole, 70, of Crossville, passed away July 2, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 4 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Woodrow Forsythe officiated.
Mr. Cole was born Sept. 2, 1930, in Clay County, TN, the son of Mizzell and Wealthy Cole.
He was employed in housekeeping at Cumberland Medical Center, and was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Cole of Crossville; sister, Robie Sue Cherry of Hermitage Springs, TN; brother, James Cole of Somerset, TN; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mizzell and Wealthy Cole; sisters, Ida Mae Cole and Deloris Cole; half brothers, Link Cole, Buford Cole, Homer Cole, Haskill Cole, Estus Cole and Ivin Cole; and half sisters, Beaulah Massey, Lucy Pedigo, Ruby Beans, Edna Taylor and Clista Powell.

BLAIR MAXWELL DRAKE
Blair Maxwell "Max" Drake, 91, of Fairfield Glade, passed away June 28, 2001. Funeral services were conducted June 30 at Hillsdale United Methodist Church in Reading, MI, with the Rev. Mark Johnson officiating. Interment followed at Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer, OH.
A memorial service was held July 5 at Fairfield Glade Community Church.
Mr. Drake was born Jan. 5, 1910, in Williams County, OH, the son of C.C. and Marilla Shreve Drake.
He graduated from Ohio State University, and became the first manager of Malabar Farm in Lucas, OH. He was the first general manager of NOBA Inc. in Tiffin, OH. As an animal breeder, he was a pioneer in the field of artificial insemination with beef and dairy cattle.
He earned numerous awards from civic, university and agricultural organizations. His most coveted awards were the Ohio State Agricultural Hall of Fame, Distinguished Service to OSU Award, the Ohio State University Alumni Citizenship Award, the National Dairy Shrine Pioneer Award, the Louis Bromfield Society Award from Malabar Farm, and in retirement, the Marvin E. Howell Award for distinguished service to economic development in Hillsdale County, MI. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his daughter, Ellen Drake of Tiffin; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Margo Drake of Tiffin, Jim and Sara Drake of Fairfield Glade, Steve and Barbara Drake of St. Louis, MO, and Paul and Peggy Drake of Huron, OH; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Hodges Drake; and two brothers, Harold Drake and Maurice Drake.

JAMES DRIVER
James "Edgar" Driver, 82, of Elyria, OH, formerly of Crossville, passed away July 2, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 5 at Busch Curtis Scheuffler Family Chapel in Elyria, with interment at Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria. Mr. Driver's son-in-law, evangelist Randy Cook, officiated, with Mr. Driver's grandson, evangelist Matthew Cook, and evangelist Mike Forshea co-officiating.
Mr. Driver was born in 1919 in Crossville, the son of Chester Allen and Laura L. Wyatt Driver.
He retired from York International (formerly Luxaire Co.) in Elyria in 1983, after 28 years of service as a welder. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in field artillery. He served in France, England, Italy, Germany and Africa, and actively fought at the Battle of Anseo Beach.
He was a member of East Broad Street Church of Christ in Elyria, where he served for many years as a Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Hazel T. Penrod Driver; daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Robert Jordan of Elyria, and Beth and Randy Cook of Farmington, WV; brother and sister-in-law, Claude W. and Louise Driver of Crossville; sister, Flora Webb of Crossville; grandchildren, Dianna Cooley, Trisha Moats, Roy Jordan, Brenda Brewer, Cindy Jordan, Tara Jordan, Matthew Cook and James Cook; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Shirley Varble; and sisters, Nellie Thomas and Geneva Davis.

Dorothy Emmajean McClure, 75, of Crossville, passed away June 30, 2001. Funeral services were conducted July 3 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Cummingsville Cemetery in Van Buren County, TN. The Rev. Roland Smith officiated.
Mrs. McClure was born March 1, 1926, in Cummingsville, the daughter of Ray and Stella Horton.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and was in Adult Group No. 5 of the Builders Sunday school class.
Survivors include her sisters, Nann Million of Crossville, Doris Collins of Chattanooga and Betty Shockley of Nashville; brothers, Morgan Horton of Sparta and Bob Horton of Crossville; stepdaughter, Janet McClure of Atlanta, GA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Stella Horton; her first husband, J.D. Bowling; her second husband, Mac McClure; and brother, Otta Lee Horton.

Janice Carolyn Reedy, 68, of Fairfield Glade, passed away July 3, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, July 6, at 11:30 a.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel of Roses in Nashville, with interment to follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The Rev. James Price will officiate.
Mrs. Reedy was born Sept. 22, 1932, in Warren, AR.
She was a longtime member of Aldersgate Methodist Church in Nashville.
Survivors include her husband of 25 years, Robert E. Ms. Seegraves was born in Ravenscroft, TN.

James Ford and the Rev. Clayton Padgett officiated. Mrs. Todd was born June 21, 1925, in Clarkrange, the daughter of Dewey and Ova Adkins Neely.
She was a homemaker, and worked 25 years at Ely & Walker in Monterey. She was a member of Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Charlotte Pierce of Cookeville; daughter-in-law, Maureen Pierce of the Dripping Springs community; sister, Treva Ashburn of Clarkrange; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Beecher Pierce and Ed Todd; son, James Pierce; and brothers, Nelson Neely, Bobby Neely and Denton Neely.

DAVID LEJENE BALLARD
David Lejene Ballard, 56, of Crossville, passed away June 26, 2001. Funeral services were conducted June 29 at Sunlight Ministries, with burial in Judson Baptist Church Cemetery in Walker, LA.
Mr. Ballard was born Aug. 13, 1944, in Baton Rouge, LA, the son of Edd Cornelius and Eva Tisdale Ballard.
He was a minister, and a member of Believers Fellowship.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi Evartt Ballard of Crossville; daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Billy Gardache of Walker, LA, and Renee and Damon Parker of Mize, MS; sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Aleisha Ballard, and Jason and Vella Ballard, all of Crossville; sister, Barbara Goff of Gonzales, LA; and grandchildren, Melody Gardache, Cierra Parker, Priscilla Parker, Damon Ballard Jr. and Dillon Parker.

Mrs. Kelso was born July 13, 1913, in Cumberland County, the daughter of Lawson and Harriett VanWinkle Hedgecoth.
She was a factory worker for Firestone, and a member of West Avenue Church of Christ.
Survivors include her brother, Beecher "Bud" Hedgecoth of Crossville; and stepson, Edwin B. Kelso of Akron, OH.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin T. Kelso; sisters, Ollie Woody, Etta Watson, Mertie Norris and Edna Hedgecoth; brothers, Leonard Hedgecoth, Leslie Hedgecoth and Herbert Hedgecoth; half sisters, Daisy Derrick and Nellie Brady; and half brother, Richard Hedgecoth.

FRED E. ZELLER
Fred E. Zeller, 77, of Cleveland, TN, passed away June 25, 2001. A memorial service was held June 28 at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Cleveland, with Pastor Andrew Ferguson and the Rev. Debra Stokes officiating.
Mr. Zeller was born July 20, 1923, in Winterset, IA, the son of Frank and Sarah Myers Zeller.
He was a graduate of the University of Iowa, and retired from Maytag after 30 years of service. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, and a member of Cleveland Associated Industries. He served on the boards of The United Way and the Boys' Clubs, and served as treasurer of the Cleveland State Community College Foundation.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Zeller of Cleveland; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Zeller and Richard McCarron of Washington, DC, Ann Zeller and Andrew Greenfield of Norwalk, CT, and Jane Zeller and John Townson of Bouge, NC; twin brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Carolyn Zeller of Tellico Village, TN; and sisters, Iowa Nichols of Las Vegas, NV, and Esther Alley of San Antonio, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Sarah Zeller.
