Grady Bertram, 42, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 24, 2003. Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Thurman Funeral Home in Sparta, with burial in the Bolin Cemetery in Cumberland County. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 27 at the Thurman Funeral Home chapel.
Survivors include his wife, Pam Brock Bertram of Sparta; son, James Jeremy Bertram of Crossville; daughter, Alicia Brittany Bertram of Crossville; stepson, Brandon Crawford of Sparta; parents, Claude and Edna Bertram of Crossville; brother, William Bates Bertram of Crossville; and sister, Debe Flynn of Crossville.

Ronald Fred "Arnold" Bilbrey, 52, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 16, 2003. Funeral services were held Feb. 19 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Donald Wattenbarger officiated.
Mr. Bilbrey was born Feb. 19, 1949 in Cumberland County, TN, the son of Jessie and Lora Bilbrey.
He was a truck driver employed by Amoco and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and William Stewart of Detroit, MI; brothers, J.D. Bilbrey and Hoover Baldwin, both of Crossville; sisters, Betty Miller of Crossville, Beatrice Bruce of Crossville, Sue Gentry of Red Boiling Springs, TN, Martha Lee of Crossville, Eva Wade, Dorothy Grant and Levella Downs, all of Muncie, IN; granddaughter, Jinger Bilbrey; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Willie D. Bilbrey, Norman Bilbrey, Paul Baldwin, Abe Baldwin and Glenn Bilbrey; and sisters, Eula Rector and Stella Northcutt.
Pallbearers were Cricket Rector, Tim Miller, Tony Miller, Ricky Williams, Robert Northcutt, Gary Bowman, Luke Bowman and Ray Bowman.

Allan L. Grant
Jan. 31, 1919 - Feb. 16, 2003
Allan L. Grant, 84, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Feb. 16, 2003. No services are planned at this time.
Mr. Grant was born Jan. 31, 1919 in New York City, the son of Albert and Emily Gelardin Algranti.
He was a retired salesman, a member of the Art Guild of Fairfield Glade and an Army veteran, having served during World War II in the Army Air Corps as a pilot. He was also an avid tennis player and a member of V.O.R.P.
Survivors include his brothers, Lee Grant of Pinehurst, NC and Ralph Grant of Pace, FL; sister, Shirley Lenzo of Elmwood, NJ; and special niece, Lisa Van Antwerp of California.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Joyce Grant.

Albert Matthew Hyder, 83, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 21, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 23 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. David Rowan officiated, with special music by the Lighthouse Singers.
Mr. Hyder was born April 10, 1919 in Cumberland County, TN, the son of Jessie and Arvie Zenia Davis Hyder.
He was a carpenter and of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He always enjoyed going to the flea market.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Alice Barnett Hyder of Crossville; sons and daughters-in-law, Leslie and Terry Hyder of Charleston, IL, Larry and Audrey Hyder of Crossville, Jerry and Janice Hyder of Cohutta, GA, Kenneth and Donna Hyder of Crossville and Eddie and Brenda Hyder of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Eldon Burgess of Crossville; brothers, Harold Hyder of Wachula, FL and Floyd Hyder of Akron, OH; and sister, Jane Hyder of Wooster, OH.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Carrie Campbell and Nettie Sabot; and brothers, Roy, Earl, Allan and Ernest Hyder.

Martha Lou McCracken, 94, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 18, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 21 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home. The Rev. Carleton Thackston and the Rev. Fay Tucker officiated.
Mrs. McCracken was born June 2, 1908 in Sparta, TN, the daughter of William T. Hale and Mary Lou Ann Anderson Hale.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her brother, Norman Hale of Sparta, TN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rex McCracken; brothers, Hubert, Tom and Eschol Hale; and sisters, Effie Johnson, Nancy Peters, Cora Johnson and Stacy Reeves.

Mr. Palmquist was born Dec. 29, 1927 in Chicago, IL, the son of Benjamin and Martha Burkman Palmquist.
He was a salesman and a Christian Scientist.

Waymon Clyde Stone, 70, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 22, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 24 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home. Bro. Reed Jones officiated. Graveside committal services were held Feb. 25 at Green Acres Memory Gardens.
Mr. Stone was born May 15, 1932 in Cumberland County, TN, the son of Ernest and Isabell Davis Stone.
He was an employee of the Water Department of the city of Crossville and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Lois (Alleta) Cooper Stone of Crossville; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Joyce Stone of Jamestown and Jeff and DeAnn Stone of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Greg Parsons of Crossville; grandchildren, David, Steven, Tyler and Lauren; brother, Ray Stone of Crossville; and sister, Eva Kerley of Crossville.

Lena Tollett, 81, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 17, 2003. Funeral services were held Feb. 19 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial and graveside services held Feb. 20 in Big Lick Cemetery. The Rev. Mike Smathers officiated, with Wanda Moore providing special music.
Mrs. Tollett was born March 28, 1921 in Bledsoe County, TN, the daughter of Waymon and Eliza Swafford Henry.
She was a homemaker and attended Big Lick Presbyterian Church. She dearly loved to quilt and crochet.
Survivors include her husband, Johnny Tollett of Crossville; daughters and sons-in-law, Lillie and Jim Akins of Crossville, Sandra and Jim Cannon of Crossville, Mary Jean and Darrell Jones of Crossville and Burdeen and Steve Morgan of Naples, FL; sister, Thelma Ambrose of Akron, OH; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Waymon and Eliza Henry.

Mrs. Bowman was born Jan. 14, 1912 in Polke Kanasuga, NC, the daughter of James William Davidson and Maniza F. Netherton Davidson.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her nieces, Brenda Gail Clay of Lancing, TN, Barbara Hall of Clinton, TN and Judy and Charlotte Bowman; nephews, Roger Dale Davidson (Maniza was his guardian and foster mother) of Dayton, OH, James Davidson of Clinton, TN and Jerry, Kenneth, Oscar and Junior Davidson, all of Clinton, TN; great-nieces, Kay Hall Barnett and Casey Bowman; great-nephews, David Bowman and Robbie Bowman; sister-in-law, Geneva Mills of Clinton, TN; and brothers-in-law, G.D. William E. Brown Sr.
March 21, 1941 - Feb. 12, 2003
William Eugene "Gene" Brown Sr., 61, of Pleasant Hill, passed away Feb. 12, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 14 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. Roy Miller officiating. The Putnam County Honor Guard provided the military honors of presentation of the flag, firing detail and Taps at the Eastland Cemetery.
Mr. Brown was born March 21, 1941 in Cumberland County, TN, the son of Benton and Louise Campbell Brown.
He was a laborer and of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and was a member of DAV.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Wilson Brown of Pleasant Hill; son, Chris Brown of Sparta; grandchildren, Doug and Nick Brown; brothers, Mitchell, Jimmy and Sammy Brown, all of Pleasant Hill; and sisters, Selma Lawson and Martha Marsh of Pleasant Hill.
He was preceded in death by his sons, William Jr., Tim and Robert Eugene Brown.

John D. Collis Sr.

John D. "J.D." Collis Sr., 76, of Marion, NC, passed away Feb. 19, 2003. Graveside services will be held Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. at the Collis Family Cemetery in Little Switzerland, NC, with Richard Hollifield officiating. Military rites will be provided by the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mr. Collis was born Aug. 4, 1926 in Mitchell County, NC, the son of D.D. and Jessie Glenn Collis.
He was a retired log home builder and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in World War II. He was a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Little Switzerland, NC.
Survivors include his wife, Britta Carpenter Collis; daughters, Judy Koon of North Augusta, SC and Sharon Stepp of Woodfin, NC; sons, Charles Collis, U.S. Navy, Japan; Jeff Collis of Hendersonville, NC and Pat Stepp of Asheville, NC; brothers, Glenn Collis of Lenoir, NC and Jim Collis of Marion, NC; sister, Ivory Hopper of Arizona; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Bohannon was born June 12, 1948 in Putnam County, TN, the son of Richie and Pearl Abston Bohannon.
He was a construction worker and a member of Plateau Missionary Baptist Church.

Mr. Burgess was born Nov. 23, 1910 in Cumberland County, TN, the son of Fancy Hill and Recie Croft Burgess.
He was a carpenter and served in the Navy. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Lena Wyatt Burgess; daughters and son-in-law, Margie and Douglas Wyatt, Lou Parker and Antha Drake; sons, James, Claude, Wintford and Ronald Burgess; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Foster Burgess, Otto Burgess, Carl Burgess and Kent Burgess; and sister, Ollie Parker and Geneva Thompson.

Russell S. Dahm
Dec. 11, 1938 - Feb. 16, 2003
Russell S. Dahm, of Fairfield Glade, formerly of Wausau, WI, passed away Feb. 16, 2003. Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fairfield Glade, with burial in the Crossville City Cemetery. The Rev. Gregory Neuzil will officiate. Family will receive friends 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Dahm was born Dec. 11, 1938 in Park Falls, WI, the son of Walter and Sadie Polakovic Dahm.
In 1958, he married Elizabeth (Betty) Drescher in Wausau, WI. He was employed as a tool and dye maker for Waukesha Engines in Waukesha, WI and Clinton, IA, and as a mold maker for Custom-Pak, Inc., retiring in Feb. 2000 and moving to Tennessee.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Dahm of Fairfield Glade; sons, Stephen and Gregory Dahm of Virginia Beach, VA and Kevin Dahm of Monroe, MI; daughters, Carla Dahm of Ypsalanti, MI and Kathleen McGowan of Coralville, IA; three grandsons; brother, Murill (Jake) Dahm of Wausau, WI; and aunt, Rose Polakovic of Wausau, WI.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather.
Pallbearers were Stephen Dahm, Kevin Dahm, Gregory Dahm, Robert Dahm, Kevin Dahm II and Matthew Dahm.

George F. Giddings
Aug. 26, 1921 - Feb. 15, 2003
George Frederick Giddings, 81, of Crossville, TN, formerly of Little Genesee, died Saturday (February 15, 2003) in Tennessee.
He was born August 26, 1921 in Little Genesee, a son of William Clayton and Olive (Champlin) Giddings.
Mr. Giddings served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology and was a mechanical engineer by trade.
He was a member of the Lake Tansi Community Church in Crossville.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Giddings of Crossville; children, Fred C. (Judy) Giddings of Massachusetts, John R. Giddings of New York, Thomas R. (Julie) Giddings of Tennessee, Sharon J. (Michael B.) Johnson of Florida, John W. Pratt of New York, Brenda G. (Robert K.) Sobeck of New York and Gerald D. (Adlaide F.) Pratt of Tennessee; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Betty H. Giddings, a sister, Helen, and a brother, Jerry.
Memorial/Masonic services will be Saturday (February 22, 2003) at 11 a.m. at the Lake Tansi Community Church in Crossville, with the pastor Jeff Monday and Jack Irwin officiating. Eulogies will be by Pastor George Long and Bob Sobeck. Pianist Polly Romaine will provide the music.
At a later date, there will be an American Legion Service at the J.W. Embser and Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville, with burial in the Wells Cemetery in Little Genesee.
Arrangements are by the Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Lake Tansi Community Church.

Garland R. Lowe
March 25, 1920 - Feb. 11, 2003
Garland Ray Lowe, 82, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 11, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 14 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. The Rev. George Long officiated.
Mr. Lowe was born March 25, 1920 in Cumberland County, TN, the son of George and Ethel Kerley Lowe.
He was the previous local business owner of Simonton Dairy/Cheese House and an Army veteran, having served during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Evans Lowe; son and daughter-in-law, Chester and Shelley Lowe of Nashville; daughter, Connie Graham of Crossville; sister, Glenna Milligan of Crossville; grandchildren, Allie Lowe, Craig Graham and Patrick Graham; great-grandchildren, Morgan Graham and Ava Graham.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Clint, Oliver and Tunny Lowe.

Robert E. "Roy" Maynard, 47, of Dunnellon, FL, formerly of Crossville, passed away Feb. 15, 2003.
Mr. Maynard was born April 12, 1955 in Maryville, TN, the son of Charles H. Maynard and Helen Maynard.
He was a former Navy Helicopter mechanic and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Maynard of Dunnellon, FL; children, Melissa Church and Cindy Lou Maynard of Dunnellon, FL; mother, Helen Maynard of Crossville; brother, Ronnie C. Maynard and Darlene Welch; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and James Wright of Maryville, TN; and sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Denny Buckner of Crossville.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles H. Maynard.

Roy Vernon Phipps, 48, of the Columbia Hill Community in Overton County near Monterey, passed away Feb. 13, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 16 from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home, with burial in the Wilson Cemetery. The Rev. Delmer McCowan and the Rev. Mike Kirby officiated.
Mr. Phipps was born July 14, 1954 in Monterey, TN, the son of Lloyd and Cliva McCowan Phipps.
He was a truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Phillips Phipps of Columbia Hill; sons, Jeffery and Roy Phipps of Crossville; stepdaughters, Leslie of Monterey, and Terrie and Tiffany of Columbia Hill Community; sisters, Elise Beatty of Muddy Pond, TN, Vida Clark, Diane Phillips and Sharon Miller, all of Monterey.

Mrs. Williams was born Jan. 9, 1905 in Overton County, TN, the daughter of C.E. Freeman and Della Judd Freeman.
She was a restaurant manager and of the Methodist faith.

Robert Wayne Woody, 32, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 10, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 13 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Woody Cemetery. Bro. Donald Wattenbarger officiated.
Mr. Woody was born Jan. 17, 1971 in Cumberland County, TN, the son of Joe Eston Woody and Karen Buck Woody.
He was a rock quarry worker and of the Baptist faith.

Claire Swanney Dickie
Dec. 29, 1933 ­ Feb. 13, 2003

Funeral services for Claire Swanney Glass Dickie of Wairoa, New Zealand, will be held Feb. 17 at the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Wairoa.
She died at Wairoa Hospital Feb. 13, 2003, following a bout with cancer.
Mrs. Dickie was born Dec. 29, 1933 in Pahiatua, NZ, the daughter of Jim and Eleanor Swanney. She lived the last 48 years of her life in Wairoa where she was employed as an elementary school teacher and high school English teacher. She retired from public education 1986 but continued to teach, serving as a substitute teacher for several years after that.
She was a founding member of the Wairoa Chapter of the Sweet Adelines, the first women's barbershop-style harmony chapter in New Zealand. She was also a member of Wairoa Lawn Bowling Club. Mrs. Dickie also volunteered delivery meals to shut-ins in the Meals on Wheels program.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Gordon Reid of Hawke's Bay, NZ; son and daughter-in-law ,Jim and Andrea Glass of Hawke's Bay, NZ; and daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Michael R. Moser of Crossville, TN.
Also, brothers Stuart Swanney, Ted Swanney and Bob Swanney of NZ, and Bruce Swanney of Phoenix, AZ; and sister, Heather Jones of NZ.
Also, 11 grandchildren including Claire, Anna and Prudence Hamilton, all of Crossville, and Nick Hamilton of Hobbs, NM.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Doug Glass and Ian Dickie; and sister Margaret, all of New Zealand.
Burial will be in the Wairoa Cemetery.

Mrs. Kerley was born Nov. 3, 1942 in Sparta, TN, the daughter of Coin Dee Selby and Tennie Lewis Selby.

Melva Ann Neal, 91, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 7, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 9 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Mrs. Neal was born April 3, 1911 in Byrdstown, TN, the daughter of Hardy Erbin Amonett and Vina Katherine "Kate" Dennis Amonett.
She was a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Luther Neal; sons, Huel, Leon and Luther Neal Jr.; daughter, Ruth McCoy; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Virgie Kate Holt, Evelyn Smith, Lucille Pyles and Uldean Hollingshead; and brother, Tom Amonett.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Hila Marie; sisters, Audrey Jolly and Esther Copeland; and brothers, Woodrow, Andrew, Levi, Newton and Benton Amonett.

Devron P. Smith

Devron Paul Smith, 44, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 5, 2003.
Mr. Smith was born March 19, 1958 in Utica, NY, the son of A. Paul and Bernice Price Smith.
A baby when his family moved to Florida, Mr. Smith relocated with his parents to Crossville following his marriage to Lorie Kraft in 1984. An alumnus of Roane State Community College and Tennessee Technological University, he and his wife owned and operated their own kitchen and bath design studio, Village Kitchens, for many years before opening their manufacturing facility, VK Industries. He was an entrepreneur, inventor and artist. A master craftsman, he built and remodeled many Crossville homes, delighted schoolchildren with his magic shows and for a lark, once wrote a weekly astrology column. He enjoyed travel, the arts, motorcycles, hang-gliding and most of all, the outdoors. A free spirit, Devron will be remembered by his family and those who knew him as a compassionate man with a great sense of humor.
He was a devoted husband and an adoring father to his daughter, Olivia.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Lorie; daughter, Olivia; parents, A. Paul and Bernice Price Smith; brother, Gray Smith; sister and brother-in-law, Summer and Chip Worthington; sister, Tamlin Karl; father- and mother-in-law, George and Erma Kraft, all of Vero Beach, FL; sister and brother-in-law, Corey and John Legare of Crossville; and eight nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Warner-Gilbert was born Nov. 30, 1931 in Linary, the daughter of Frank and Otas Warner.
She was a member of Elks Lodge 2751 and VFW Post 5025 Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of Linary Church of Christ.

Ruth Lister
Jan. 30, 2003

Dr. Ruth Lister, 85, of Pleasant Hill, passed away Jan. 30, 2003. In place of a service or ceremony, a memorial gathering is being planned for a later date at Uplands Retirement Center in Pleasant Hill.
Dr. Lister was born in Marcus, WA, the daughter of George W. and Florence King Lister.
She graduated from Phoenix High School in Arizona; received a BA in 1944 from Baptist Missionary Training School, now called Colgate Rochester Divinity School; earned a BD in 1949 from Yale University Divinity School; and received her Ed.D. from Indiana University in 1961.
Dr. Lister was one of the first women admitted to Yale University, and one of six women in her class at the Divinity School. She worked her way through Yale by making slides and filmstrips (before the era of videotape) for many of her professors for their use in lectures throughout the world.
Her career as an educator began at Schauffler College in Cleveland, OH, where she taught courses in religious education. When the college merged with the Graduate School of Theology at Oberlin College, Dr. Lister became a professor of Christian Education there. In addition, she developed and coordinated the Audio Visual Resource Center there, which provided educational resource material to churches throughout the U.S. While at Oberlin, she also developed and produced films and filmstrips for Margaret Taylor Doane, a pioneer in liturgical and sacred dance.
Dr. Lister retired as Associate Professor at Slippery Rock State University in Pennsylvania in 1979. She had a lifelong affiliation with the American Baptist church and was actively involved in developing instructional materials in Christian education for the Baptist and various other denominations.
She was also a ham radio operator for much of her life (KA3JBX).
Survivors include her nieces, Susan Bixler and husband John of Brockport, NY, Nancy Lister of Manchester, CT and Jean Hann and husband Daniel of Orange Park, FL; nephews, Bob Boring and wife Carol of Clamoth Falls, OR, Paul Boring and wife Christine of Canby, OR, Tom Boring and wife Leigh of Hillsboro, OR and Jack Lister and wife Maxine of El Cajon, CA; and a host of loving friends throughout the U.S. and around the world who will greatly miss her loyal friendship, unfeigned humility, mischievous humor and gentle spirit.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, George and Robert Lister and sister, Florence Boring.

Special music was provided by Alvie's daughters singing with accompaniment by his wife, and Johnny Moore singing Alvie's favorite gospel songs.
Mr. Henry was born Sept. 27, 1923 in Slate Springs of Cumberland County, TN, the son of Louis Russell Henry and Tena Hawn Henry.
He was a salesman and a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church. He was also an avid golfer.

Mr. Elliott was born Aug. 9, 1908, in Strathroy, Ontario, Canada, the son of Emerson and Mary Jane Campbell Elliott.
He was a cabinetmaker and a member of the First Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in the furniture business with his brothers in Michigan for many years before moving to Crossville in 1988.

Mrs. Wall was born Nov. 2, 1919 in Somerville, MA.
She was a charter member of Central Baptist Church. She was an active volunteer in the church library and a member of the Glowing Embers senior fellowship group. She was also active for many years in the Girl Scouts of America, serving in a variety of roles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George F. Wall.

Bertha W. Young, 93, of Crossville, passed away Jan. 29, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 1 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home. The Rev. David Lampman officiated. Funeral services were also held Feb. 5 from Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Knox, IN, with burial in Crown Hill Cemetery in Knox, IN. Pastor Tim Miller officiated.
Mrs. Young was born June 11, 1909 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Herman and Carolyn Kramer Zippe.
She was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Ralph W. and Marilyn Johnson of Williamsburg, VA; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Bob Stepp of Crossville; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands, Ralph Johnson and Frank Young.

Mrs. Cole was born Feb. 16, 1915 in Jennings, OK.
She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church.

Mr. Durant was born April 24, 1959 in Akron, OH, the son of Ronald and Martha Forney Durant Sr.
He was a construction contractor.

Mr. Meadows was born June 4, 1968 in Cumberland County, the son of James H. and Wilma J. VanWinkle Meadows.

Zelma "Sally" Simpson Lewis, 60, of New Bern, NC, passed away Jan. 28, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 1 at Core Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Diane Leblanc officiated.
Mrs. Lewis was a former employee of E.J. Pope & Sons, Inc. and taught cosmetology at Craven Community College from 1982-1983.
Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Michael Gary and Belinda Lewis and Thomas Eric Lewis, all of New Bern, NC; brothers, Leo F. Simpson Jr. of Crossville and Douglas J. Simpson of Lubbock, TX; and granddaughter, Brittany Kay Lewis.

Evie Mae Miller, 51, of the Glade Creek Community, passed away Jan. 21, 2003, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Feb. 2, with burial in the Glade Creek Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Hardy and the Rev. Larry Potter officiated.
Mrs. Miller was born Feb. 6, 1951, in Sparta to Charlie Bumbalough and the late Linne Randolph Bumbaloug.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Willard "Vonnie" Miller; sons Dale Miller of Glade Creek Community and Mark Miller of Crossville; father, Charlie Bumbalough of Monterey; sisters Carolyn Whaley and Mary Bumbalough of the Glade Creek Community, Lorene Morgan and Pamela Farley of Monterey, Lisa Maxwell of Mayland and Melissa Bumbalough of Cookeville; and brothers Jerry Bumbalough of Crossville and Timmothy Bumbalough and Paul Bumbalough of Cookeville.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Bumbalough.

James Brent Sherrill

James Brent Sherrill, 43, of Crab Orchard, passed away Jan. 30. Funeral services were held Feb. 2 in the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home with Bro. Mike Ritzman officiating. Burial followed in Haley's Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Sherrill was born March 2, 1959, in Crossville.
Survivors include his mother, Winifred Marie Sherrill; brother Emmett Sherrill; and sister Janet Houston, all of Crab Orchard; nephew Mark Houston; nieces Kellie Sherrill and Lesley Sherrill; great-nephew and great-niece Austin Cade Houston and Halley Jo Hale and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Hubert Sherrill, and nephew Matt Houston.

Harold Elliott

Funeral Services for Harold Campbell Elliott, 94, of Lincoln St., Crossville, TN, were conducted Jan. 31 at the First Baptist Church with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Bro. David Wilerson officiated.
Mr. Elliott went to be with the Lord Jan. 27, 2003, at WyndRidge Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Aug. 9, 1908, in Strathroy, Ontario, Canada, son of Emerson and Mary Jane Campbell Elliott.
He was a cabinetmaker and member of the First Baptist Church.
Mr. Elliott servd in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in the furniture business with his brothers in Michigan for many years before moving to Crossville in 1988.
Survivors include wife, Martha Ann Prevettw Elliot, of Crossville; daughters and sons-in-law Ruth ann and Michael Beagan of Kodak, TN, and Sara Ellliott and Todd Laufenberg of Sycamore, IL; sond and daughters-in-law Philip and Marsha Elliott of Fairview, TN, James Elliott of Nashville, Stephen and Cindy Elliott of Lake Orion, MI, Andrew Elliott of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Matthew Elliott of Washington, D.C., and John and Maryellen Elliot of Wast Caldwell, NJ; fourteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sister Ann Dodge of Crossville.
He was preceded in death by son Arther Bruce Elliott, sister Jean Roberts and brothers Ross, Stewart and Leonard Elliott.
Pallbearers were Philip Elliott, James Elliott, Stephen Elliott, Andrew Elliott, Matthew Elliott, John Elliott, Michael Beagan and Todd Laufenberg.

Beulah E. Finley

Beulah Eileen Sheppard Finley passed away Jan. 25, 2003. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. at Scales Funeral Home in Murfreesboro, TN.
Mrs. Finley was born Nov. 11, 1917 in Marion, IL.
A long time member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, she played piano on Sundays until her health began to fail. She was a member of the Oak Ridge Symphony early in its beginning, and later played viola with the Niagara Falls Philharmonic before returning to Tennessee. She was active in the Art Circle Library and taught in Cumberland County's adult reading program. She was also an active volunteer worker with the bloodmobile and the League of Women Voters, and was a poll worker during elections.
Survivors include her sons, James Michael Finley of Rockvale, TN and Robert George Finley of Crossville; daughters, Patricia Lee Finley of Crossville and Pamela Sue Schrader of Murfreesboro; grandchildren, Jacqueline Marie Finley Bush of Rockvale and Anne Christine Finley Thompson of Murfreesboro; great-grandchildren, Lucas Burton, Colin Thompson, Mauryn Thompson and Aidon Thompson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James J. Finley.

Howard Jonathan Honeycutt, 79, of Crossville, passed away Jan. 20, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Jan. 23 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home. Bro. Dennis Burelison officiated.
Mr. Honeycutt was born Dec. 5, 1923 in Williamsburg, KY, the son of George and Ara Foley Honeycutt.
He was a Hi-Lo driver at Ford Motor Co. and of the Christian faith.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Reece Honeycutt of Crossville; sons, Stan, Brian and Dan Honeycutt, all of Michigan; daughters, Brenda Honey, Cheryl Tapper, Gayle Barton and Tanya Loeffler, all of Michigan, and Marissa Whyte of Knoxville; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Gladys Sabo, Mary Schock and Hazel Hinken, all of Michigan; and brothers, Pete Honeycutt of Florida and Jim Honeycutt of Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Foley and Donald Honeycutt.

Perry Elmo Johnson, 89, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 29, 2003. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. at Camp Heights Community Freewill Baptist Church, with burial in the Oaklawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Jan. 31, at the chapel of Thurman Funeral Home. The body will lie in state from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church on Saturday.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Richard Graham of Sparta; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Barbara Johnson and Gene and Val Johnson, all of Sparta; sister, Ester Burchett of Ohio; grandchildren, Randy Johnson, Ricky Johnson and Charisty Judd; and four great-grandchildren.

Owen Franklin Markley, 93, of Crossville, passed away Jan. 15, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Jan. 20 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Clarkrange Cemetery. The Rev. Dan Haskins officiated.
Mr. Markley was born Oct. 29, 1909 in Trumble County, OH, the son of John S. and Helen Caldwell Markley.
He was a member of Homestead Baptist Church.
Survivors include his sister, Edna Hall of Philadelphia, TN and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Markley.
Pallbearers were Jack Henderson, Paul West, Lynn Hargis, Joel Ross, Dean Ross and Haney Breeding.

Jim C. Music, 91, of Crossville, passed away Jan. 27, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Jan. 28 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. Graveside services with visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 31, beginning at 2 p.m., with the funeral at 3 p.m. at Bluegrass Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lexington, KY. The Rev. George Long and the Rev. Frank Walker officiated. The music was "Amazing Grace" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus."
Mr. Music was born Jan. 5, 1912 in Crossville, the son of Bill and Mary Margaret Music.
He was a Greyhound bus driver for 37 years. He was also a Master Mason of The Grand Lodge of KY, F. & A.M., Lexington Lodge No. 1. He was a member of Woodlawn Methodist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife, Vera Music of Crossville; daughter, Mary "Maggie" Patrick of Lexington, KY; son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Liz Music of Englewood, OH; granddaughters, Susan Barry of Rome, GA and Marla Smallwood of Englewood, OH; five great-grandchildren; and very special friend, Jerry Ray of Tansi, TN.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Music and Thelma Lowe; and daughter, Jimmie Marie Mahaffey.

Mr. Smith was born June 27, 1917 in Cumberland County, the son of Venis Allen and Lavada Walker Smith.
He was a logger and of the Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Louise Davenport Smith of Crossville; son, Paul Smith; daughters, Loretta Britt and Genese Baker of Crossville; stepsons, Hubert and Earl Brown of Crossville; stepdaughter Reba Hood of Murfreesboro; 15 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; brother, Tommy Smith of Louisiana; and sisters, Elizabeth Myers of Crossville and Ava Lee Addington of Michigan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepson, Aaron Brown; brother, Walter Smith; and sister, Maude Thomas.
