Beatrice C. Abner
June 29, 1941 - Feb. 20, 2002
Beatrice Conley Abner, 60, of Livingston, TN, formerly of Crossville, died in peace at Cookeville Regional Medical Center on Feb. 20, 2002, after courageously fighting emphysema for seven years.
Funeral services were conducted Feb. 23 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Mark Phillips officiated.
Ms. Abner was born June 29, 1941, in Cumberland County, the daughter of A.V. and Nora Conley.
She was a devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and aunt. Her greatest enjoyment in life was being with family and friends. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her mother, Nora Conley of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Dan Hundt of Rickman, TN; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Heather Abner of Lebanon, IL; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Bob Harvel of Crossville; brother and sister-in-law, Avery and Michelle Conley of Crossville; grandchildren, Lana Bennett, Kendra Hundt, Carson Abner and Hartley Abner; 17 nieces and nephews; 15 great-nieces and -nephews; aunts, uncles and cousins; ex-husband, Ron Abner; special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Benny and Sharon Abner of Dayton, OH; and special aunt and uncle, Margie and J.V. Conley of Kingston; as well as a lot of friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, A.V. Conley.
Pallbearers were nephews Ricky Hemming, Joe Harvel, Mike Harvel, A.V. Harvel, Avery Conley II and Tony Conley.
The family requests that memorials be made to the American Lung Association, or Brotherton Missionary Baptist Church, 4000 Buck Mountain Rd., Cookeville, TN 38506.

Lauraine G. Bergquist
March 2, 1928 - Feb. 17, 2002
Lauraine G. Bergquist, 73, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Feb. 17, 2002. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Chicago, IL.
Ms. Bergquist was born March 2, 1928, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Herbert and Evelyn Weed.
She was a retired employee of United Airlines, and a member of Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two nephews, two great-nephews, one great-niece, three great-great-nephews and a host of loving friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Jeanne Martin.
The family requests that contributions in memory of Lauraine be made to Hospice of Cumberland County, 30 E. Adams St., Crossville, TN 38558.

Ova Aline Green, 79, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 21, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 23 at Pomona United Methodist Church, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Bro. Cliff Ingram and Bro. Bill Smith officiated, with special music by The Goldenaires.
Mrs. Green was born Sept. 26, 1922, in Overton County, TN, the daughter of Lynn Boyd and Ova Armilda Matthews Anderson.
She was a member of Pomona United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her sons, Harvey Green, David Green and Darrell Green, all of Crossville; daughters, Mary Lou Jackson, Linda Baldwin, Judy Green and Carolyn Green, all of Crossville; brother, Leonard Anderson of Kingston, TN; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry R. Green.
Pallbearers were William Jones, Shawn Fisher, Jerry Jackson, Jacob Franklin, Jimmy Baldwin and Benjamin Long.

Ludie Hinch Reed, 83, of Grandview, TN, passed away Feb. 20, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 22 at Reed's Chapel Church of God in Grandview, with burial in Harris Cemetery. Bro. Donald Haggard officiated, with special music by Teresa Hinch, Janie Holloway and Wanda Reed.
Mrs. Reed was born Aug. 20, 1918, in Bledsoe County, TN, the daughter of Rufus Wilburn and Anna Linda Sherrill Hinch.
She was a member of Reed's Chapel Church of God.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Reed of Grandview; daughters, Cellie Rector and Pansy Waldo, both of Grandview, Bernice Carter of Decatur, TN, and Viola McCowan of Kingston, TN; sisters, Cleo Edwards, Margie Godsey, Genice Keel and Impgene Meadows; brother, Bertie Hinch of Grandview; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.

Cora E. Burgess
Feb. 18, 2002
Cora Evelyn Burgess, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 18, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 21 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Big Lick Cemetery. The Rev. Mike Smathers and the Rev. Pete Ullmann officiated, with special music by Sid Venable and Velma Witt.
Mrs. Burgess was born in Pleasant Hill, the daughter of Eston K. and Emily Elmore Wilbanks.
She was a registered nurse, and a member of Big Lick Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Butch and Vickie Burgess of Crossville; daughters and son-in-law, Linda and Jim Milam, and Sherry Smith, all of Crossville; sisters, Pearl Williams of Rickman, TN, Estelle Edwards of Knoxville, Edna Baisley of Crossville and Norma Gamble of Atlanta, GA; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eucle Burgess; sisters, Kellie Masters and Ruth Boswell; and son-in-law, Derrill Smith.

Charles E. Hawk
April 26, 1942 - Feb. 16, 2002
Gen. Charles Edward Hawk, 59, of Kingston, TN, passed away Feb. 16, 2002. A memorial service was held Feb. 23 in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home in Kingston.
Gen. Hawk was born April 26, 1942, in Richard City, TN, the son of Chester and Ruby Hawk.
A 1960 graduate of Roane County High School and a graduate of the University of Tennessee, he received his law degree from UT School of Law, where he graduated No. 1 in his class.
He was in private practice until he went to work as assistant District Attorney General for eight years. He was elected District Attorney General for Roane, Meigs, Loudon and Morgan counties, and served in that capacity for 16 years. He later worked as assistant District Attorney General in the U.S. Attorney General's Office in Knoxville. After retirement he practiced with the Bob Ables Law Firm in South Pittsburg, TN.
He was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Roane County Bar Association, American Legion, Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodge #38 in Kingston. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, receiving a Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi Lois Amelia Swallows Hawk; daughters and son-in-law, April and Scott Campbell of Karns, TN, and Amanda Hawk of Franklin, TN; granddaughter, Whitney Campbell of Karns; and godsons, Parker Hall and Ty Raymer.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Charles E. Hawk Cancer Memorial Fund, c/o Brown Funeral Home, 438 W. Race St., Kingston, TN 37763.

Bedford Clyo Spivey, 94, of Putnam County, TN, passed away Feb. 16, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 19 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Smith's Chapel Cemetery. Bro. Vern Daugherty officiated.
Mr. Spivey was born Aug. 28, 1907, in Jackson County, TN, the son of William and Nancy Brown Spivey.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his sons, Clyde Spivey of Walling, TN, Wayne Spivey of Doyle, TN, Sammy Spivey of Cookeville and Ronnie Spivey of Crossville; daughters, Christine Brady of Franklin, KY, Wilma Brady of Adairville, KY, and Virginia Presley of Livingston, TN; sisters, Flora Lackings of Lebanon, TN, Flossie Tinsley of Lafayette, TN, and Vera Fletcher of Sparta, TN; 75 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Littie Rosetta Emerton Spivey and Mary Elizabeth Holt Spivey; sons, Elza Spivey, Eldon Spivey and Ola Spivey; and daughter, Dorothy Fish.

Grace Day Flynn, 98, of Chattanooga, formerly of Crossville, passed away Feb. 12, 2002. Graveside services were held Feb. 16 at Davis Cemetery. Bro. Wade Webster officiated, with special music by Mrs. Flynn's granddaughter, Krista Lee.
Mrs. Flynn was born Nov. 26, 1903, in Cumberland County, the daughter of Charlie Thomas and Georgia May Hale Brewer.
She was a waitress, and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include her sons, Jerry Flynn of Tellico Village, TN, and Eugene Flynn of Tulsa, OK; daughters, JoAnne Edmonds of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Betty Allen of Nashville; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

James G. Ford

James G. Ford, 86, of Rockwood, passed away Feb. 19, 2002. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Evans Mortuary in Rockwood, with Pastor Stephen Yates officiating.
Mr. Ford was born July 8, 1915, in Crossville.
He was a retired electrician with TVA, and of the Presbyterian faith. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Nell Ford of Rockwood; sons, Robert Estel Ford of Knoxville, Robert Gordan Ford of Harriman and James D. Ford of Orange Park, FL; daughter, Gretchen Ford Drane of Johnson City, TN; and seven grandchildren.

Lorene Kidwell
April 3, 1929 - Feb. 15, 2002
Lorene Kidwell, 72, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 15, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 17 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Don McCool officiated.
Mrs. Kidwell was born April 3, 1929, in Harlan, KY, the daughter of William and Bessie Mabe Ray.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Apostolic Lighthouse Church. She was a past matron of Amanda Chapter #4 Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine.
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Tom Kidwell of Crossville; sons and daughter-in-law, Larry and Karen Kidwell of Atlanta, GA, and Randall Kidwell of Starkville, MS; brother, James Ray of Atlanta; grandson, Grey Alexander Kidwell of Atlanta; special niece, Penny Lackey of Crossville; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Earl W. Thompson
Nov. 24, 1916 - Feb. 14, 2002
Earl Woodrow Thompson, 85, of Clarkrange, passed away Feb. 14, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 16 at Springs Chapel Methodist Church. Bro. Billy Mitchell officiated, with special music by The Victory Lights. The DAV did the presentation of the flag, firing detail and taps at Springs Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery, with interment following.
Mr. Thompson was born Nov. 24, 1916, in Pickett County, TN, the son of William C. and Martha Couch Thompson.
He was a sewing machine mechanic, and of the Baptist faith. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his son, Earl W. Thompson Jr. of Clarkrange; grandson, Bryon Thompson of Clarkrange; and granddaughter, Karen Lowe of Chattanooga.

Vernie Ellen Norris, 73, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 12, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 15 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Haley's Grove Cemetery. Bro. Wayne Matthews officiated.
Mrs. Norris was born March 18, 1928, in Pickett County, TN, the daughter of Barlow and Allie Hall Carter.
She was a greenhouse worker, and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her sons, James Norris and Charles W. Norris, both of Crossville, and Jack Norris of Pikeville; daughters, Stella Janow, Virginia Norris, Oma Meadows, Katherine Dunlap and Michele Bartlett, all of Crossville; brother, Clyde Carter of Crossville; sisters, Christine Powers, Rosetta Adams, Hazel Clark and Pearl Wyatt, all of Crossville; 20 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Barlow and Allie Carter; husband, John W. Norris Sr.; son, John W. Norris Jr.; brother, Zebedee Carter; sister, Ave Gladys Maynard; and grandchildren, Adam Joel Boles, Junior Lynn Norris and Jordan Matthew Bartlett.

Albert "A.B." Tosh, 91, of Monterey, passed away Feb. 17, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home. The Rev. Bobby Floyd will officiate, with interment in Whittaker Cemetery.
Mr. Tosh was born Oct. 10, 1910, in Putnam County, TN, the son of Andrew and Lillie Whittaker Tosh.
Survivors include his son, Paul Tosh of Rockwood; sisters, Mary Laycox and Ruth Phillips, both of Monterey; grandchildren, Christine, Linda, Judy and Becky; and five great-grandchildren.

Mae Farris, 89, of the Pomona community, passed away Feb. 16, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted today (Tuesday) at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with interment to follow in Turner Cemetery in Pomona. The Rev. Randy Roberson will officiate.
Mrs. Farris was born Dec. 15, 1912, in Cumberland County, the daughter of William and Florence Turner Bell.
She was a restaurant cook.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Pearl and Johnny Copeland of Pomona; son, Tommy Farris of Pomona; sisters, Florence Barnwell of Pomona and Myrtle Osborne of Dayton, OH; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, William Farris.

Mr. Gentry was born Sept. 3, 1929, in Putnam County, TN, the son of Herbert and Cordelia Bray Gentry.
He was a mechanic, and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne Harold and Pamela Gentry of Ohio; stepson and spouse, Benjamin A. Perry and his wife Susan of Royal Oak, MI; stepdaughters and their spouses, Beverly L. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Cordelia Gentry; wife, Myrtle "Connie" Gentry; brothers, Alphus Gentry, Winnell Gentry and J.D. Gentry; and sisters, Gladys Carter, Irene Gentry and Lorene Stewart.

Robert R. Roenbeck, 62, of Monterey, passed away Feb. 13, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 18 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., with private interment.
Mr. Roenbeck was born Dec. 20, 1939, in New Jersey, the son of William and Marian Hazelman Roenbeck.
He was a police officer.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Russo Roenbeck; daughters and son-in-law, Tara Scappatura, and Elaine and Tony Sclera; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Jr. and Vicky Roenbeck; brother and sister-in-law, William and Joan Roenbeck; and three grandchildren.

James Ernest Sexton, 66, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 10, 2002. A memorial service was held Feb. 12 at Pine Eden Baptist Church, with Bro. James Haynes officiating.
Mr. Sexton was born Feb. 13, 1935, in Morristown, TN, the son of James Floyd and Eliza Clement Sexton.
He was a member of Pine Eden Baptist Church. He served 10 years as Cumberland County EMS director, and served as chairman of the local chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a former member of the Cumberland County Rescue Squad, and was a member of the Police Department Auxiliary.
Survivors include his wife, Gail Sexton of Crossville; sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Dawn Sexton of Vancouver, WA, and Keith and Janice Woody of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and James Stephens of Crossville; daughter, Micki Sexton of Lebanon, TN; and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Brown was born Dec. 1, 1943, in Meigs County, TN, the daughter of Cecil and Ruth Goodner Spurlin.

Juanita Brooker Carroll, 85, of Fayetteville, NC, passed away Feb. 10, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville, with burial at Lafayette Memorial Park West. The Rev. Sandy Saunders will officiate.
Mrs. Carroll was born March 8, 1916.
She was a member of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church.

Mrs. Curtis was born July 21, 1918, in Wayne County, MI, the daughter of John and Bertha Byers Reitz.
Survivors include her husband, Stuart Curtis of Fairfield Glade; and son, James Curtis of Orlando, FL.

J.L. Edmonds

J.L. Edmonds, of Graysville, TN, passed away Feb. 8, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 11 from the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton, TN, with burial in Pleasantview Cemetery in Graysville. The Rev. Bill Ewing, the Rev. Jerry Moseley and the Rev. Leroy Smith officiated.
Mr. Edmonds was born Jan. 9, 1928, in Bledsoe County, TN, the youngest of 10 children of Ellis and Rosie Thomas Edmonds.
He had lived in Graysville for the past 40 years, was retired from Suburban Mfg., and most recently worked at the convenience center in Graysville.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Agnes Reel Edmonds; son, Stanley Edmonds of Evensville, TN; sisters, Josie Belle Anderson Hankins of Pikeville and Maggie Myers of Crossville; and grandsons, Alex Edmonds and Colton Edmonds, both of Evensville.

Mr. Lawson was born Sept. 22, 1915, in Bledsoe County, TN, the son of Gaither and Mary Angel Lawson.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his son, Roger Dale Lawson of Cookeville; daughters, Freta Ray Brooks and Betty Jane Matheney, both of Sparta; brothers, Willard Lawson and W.T. Lawson, both of Crossville, and Grady Lee Lawson of Sparta; sisters, Ollie Lewis and Emma Embry, both of Crossville; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gaither and Mary Angel Lawson; wife, Lillie Burgess Lawson; sons, Ellis Lawson and Oddis Lawson; brothers, Olen Lawson and Homer Lawson; and sister, Ethel Tucker.

Mr. Mason was born April 9, 1922, the son of Arthur and Caroline Mason.
He was a Royal British Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Church of England, and a retired factory foreman.

Mrs. Pankey was born June 13, 1915, in East Peoria, IL, the daughter of Robert and Ella Mae Curtis Rogers.

Mr. Parsons was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Cumberland County, the son of William Bryan and Minnie Rigsby Parsons.
He was a retired conductor with the Tennessee Central and the L&N railroads. He served two terms as mayor of Monterey, and also served as alderman. He was a member of Monterey Masonic Lodge No. 751, and Monterey Order of the Eastern Star. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was a member of Monterey First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Malena McCloud Parsons of Monterey; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Lt. Col. Douglas Clark of Newport News, VA; sister, Louise Justice of Anderson, IN; and grandson, Douglas Ashby Clark.

He was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, and of Chi-Phi Fraternity in Michigan. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was of the Episcopalian faith.

Mr. Allen was born May 19, 1931, in La Crescent, MN, the son of Arthur and Viola Allen.
He retired after 22 years as a material handling engineer from the Lima, OH Ford Engine Plant. He was a member of the Elks and the American Legion. He served four years in the U.S. Navy.

The Rev. Anderson was born March 6, 1907, in Jackson County, TN, the son of Matthew Dillard and Sarah Cason Anderson.
He graduated from Cumberland Mountain School in Crossville; Hiwassee College in Madisonville, TN; Emory University; and Candler School of Theology.
The Rev. Anderson was pastor at Methodist churches in the South Georgia Conference, including Gordon, Roberta, Cross Keys in Macon, Eastman, Hinesville, Baxley, Cordele, Cherokee Heights in Macon and Rose Hill in Columbus. He retired in 1977 as executive secretary of the Georgia Council of Moral and Civic Concerns.
Survivors include his son, Harry L. Anderson of Temple, GA; granddaughters, Debbie Anderson Bell of Decatur, Cindy Anderson Tolevich of Macomb Township, MI, and Denise Anderson McCorley of Gainesville, GA; great-granddaughters, Christine Hughes of Decatur and Gretchen Gordin of Lakeland, FL; and great-grandson, Alex Tolevich of Macomb Township.

Mrs. Knox was born March 16, 1920, in Cumberland County, the daughter of W. Carroll and Drucilla Jones Wyatt.
She was a member of Monterey United Methodist Church. She was an LPN, working from 1951 to 1962 at Monterey Hospital, 1963 to 1980 at Cumberland Medical Center and 1982 to 1988 at Standing Stone Health Care Center in Monterey.
Survivors include her daughters, Berta Baisley Williams of Cookeville, Wanda Reed Thurmond of Monterey and Brenda Talene Colvin of Chattanooga; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Larry and Ima Reed of Crossville; stepchildren, Bernie Reed Gilmore of Monterey and Gerald Reed of Dayton, OH; sisters, Kethel Henderson of Dickson, TN, and Dorothy Wyatt McLoud of Kingston, TN; brother, Alfred "A.B." Wyatt of Nashville; grandchildren, Gordon Hutchinson, Robin Thurmond Matos and Valerie Thurmond, all of Cookeville, Kelly Thurmond Long of Clarksville, TN, Jan Reed Gonzalez of Raleigh, NC, Madge Reed Farooq of Washington, DC, Tammy Reed Doyle of Badem, Germany, and Diane Graves of Birmingham, AL; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Horace Baisley in 1937, J. Talmadge Reed in 1952, and Roscoe Knox in 1989; grandson, John Baisley Williams; sisters, Wealtha Wyatt Baisley and Glennis Wyatt Hamilton; brothers, Ridley Wyatt, Lester Wyatt, Justin Wyatt and Browder Wyatt; and stepchildren, Harvey Reed, Talmadge Reed Jr., Clara Reed Bagwell and Libby Reed Beaty.
Pallbearers will be Mrs. Knox's nephews, John Wyatt, Jim Wyatt, Luke Wyatt, Phillip Wyatt, Bob Baisley, Jay Coleman, Carl Henderson Jr. and Jody McLoud.
Memorials may be made to the Monterey United Methodist Church Pew Bible Fund, or the American Diabetes Association.

Vernon Joseph Oliver, 93, of Chattanooga, passed away Jan. 25, 2002. No services are planned.
Mr. Oliver was born Dec. 26, 1908, in Tacoma, WA, the son of Christian and Katherine Kilpl Oliver.
He was a machinist.
Survivors include his son, Vernon Oliver Jr. of Huntsville, AL; daughters, Alberta Oliver of Chattanooga and Christal Speer of Ooltewah, TN; sister, Dorothy Griffith of Ellijay, GA; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Katherine Oliver; his wife, Dorothy May Butler Oliver; sister, Florence Anderson; and brothers, Loyal Oliver, Ted Oliver and Victor Oliver.
Crossville Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Rose Marie Parrish

Rose Marie Parrish, 66, of Crossville, passed away Jan. 22, 2002. Funeral services were held Jan. 26 from the chapel of Ballard & Son Funeral Home in Daleville, IN, with burial in Anderson Memorial Park in Anderson, IN. The Rev. Henry Patterson officiated.
Mrs. Parrish was born Jan. 11, 1936, in Anderson, IN, the daughter of James Edward and Rosella Taylor Crosley.
She was a member of Chesterfield First Freewill Baptist Church in Chesterfield, IN. She was the former owner of Anderson Speedway, Muncie Motor Speedway and Leo's Auto/Truck in Daleville.
Survivors include her son, John Parrish of Crossville; brothers, Doyle Crosley and Jerry Crosley, both of Crossville; sisters-in-law, Virginia Blackmer of Alexandria, VA, and Jewell Williams of Crystal Beach, TX; 11 nieces; nine nephews; and several great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Parrish.
