Ruth Elinor Aiello, 81, of Fairfield Glade, passed away April
27, 2003. A Funeral Mass was held April 29 at St. Francis of
Assisi Catholic Church, with Father Greg Neuzil, Father Phillip
Thoni and Deacon Mark Fredrick officiating.
Mrs. Aiello was born Aug. 20, 1921 in Deposit, NY, the daughter
of Frank and Mamie Gardner Carson.
She was a homemaker and of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph A. "Joe" Aiello
Sr. of Fairfield Glade; sons, Gary A. Aiello of Bloomingdale,
NJ, Joseph A. Aiello Jr. of Bowie, MD and John A. Aiello of West
Hollywood, CA; daughters, Donna Louise Pascrell of Clifton, NJ,
Marie Rodgers of Albuquerque, NM and Nancy A. Granados of Olney,
MD; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Lois
Bailey of Inverness, FL and Dorothy Crosby of Gillette, IL.

Norman Miller, 76, of Crossville, passed away May 3, 2003. Funeral
services were conducted May 5 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial
Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Larry
Long and Bro. Billy Nabors officiated, with music by Coleman
Looper.
Mr. Miller was born March 20, 1927 in Loudon, TN, the son of
Joe Wesley and Liza Mizer Miller.
He was a dozer operator and a deacon and trustee of Bakers Crossroads
Freewill Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War
II. He was awarded the Purple Heart and was a lifetime member
of the DAV.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Betty Lois Miller of
Crossville; daughters and son-in-law, Sherry and Jimmy Miller
of Crossville and Susie Miller of Crawford, TN; son and daughter-in-law,
Wayne and Jackie Miller of Sparta; brother, Alvin and Luther
Miller of Crossville, Raymond Miller of El Paso, TX and Simon
(Buck) Miller of Hazel Park, MI; sisters, Mattie Taylor and Willie
Long, both of Crossville; stepsister, Mabel Miller of New Lebanon,
OH; grandchildren, Kem Baird, Penny Miller and Darcy Smith; and
great-grandchildren, Tabitha and Christopher Baird.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers,
one sister and one stepbrother.
Members of the Veterans Honor Guard served as pallbearers. Honorary
pallbearers were David Long, Brian Hodgin, Paul Miller, Anthony
Hodgin, Jim Qualls and Eric Lindsey.

Midge L. Perkins-Uribe
Oct. 13, 1974 - April 27, 2003
Midge Liliana Perkins-Uribe was born in Guadalajara, Mexico,
on October 13, 1974, and passed from this life on Sunday, April
27, 2003. She was the daughter of Maria Estele Uribe and Lester
Jordan Perkins. She was educated in Mexico, graduated from the
University of Guadalajara, and had her own travel agency.
Lili came to the United States and became of citizen of this
country. She was so proud to be an American citizen and was always
willing to lend a hand or help someone no matter where she was.
After becoming a citizen, she served an 18-month mission for
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Temple Square
in Salt Lake City, Utah. Missionary work was dear to her heart,
and she was very dedicated.
She was released from her mission in November and came home to
stay with her family for awhile. She returned back to Salt Lake
City to work, to pursue a courtship that had begun a couple of
years earlier, and to prepare the way so that her family might
also come there. However, the dream of a marriage and of having
her family near was never realized due to her untimely death.
Lili is survived by her mother, Estele Uribe; two sisters, Susan
and Yesica; a brother and sister-in-law, Luis and Donna Bravo;
a nephew, Malachi Bravo; her maternal grandfather, Manuel Uribe;
nine uncles; six aunts; 75 first cousins; and her fiancee, Clay
Chapman, as well as many other relatives and friends throughout
the United States and abroad.
The funeral was conducted Saturday, May 3 at the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints located on Genesis Road. Burial was
in the Slate Springs Cemetery. A memorial service was held in
Guadalajara, Mexico, on Sunday, May 4.

Elton "Curly" Ralph Ashcraft, 87, of Crossville, passed
away April 28, 2003. Funeral services were conducted May 3 from
the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres
Memory Gardens. Bro. James C. Pugh officiated.
Mr. Ashcraft was born Oct. 1, 1915 in Concordia, KS, the son
of Roy Victor Ashcraft and Jessie Victoria Musser Ashcraft.
He was a machine operator and of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Norma and Lloyd
Tabor of Crossville, Elta and Dale Bundy of Chewelah, VA and
Karen and Jack Mason of Streamwood, IL; grandchildren, Robin
Barnwell Davis, Ron Bundy, Darryl Barnwell, Todd Bundy, Daniel
Mason and Lana Mason Marlar; five great-grandchildren; sister,
Harriett Carlson of Las Vegas, NV; and brother, Bill Ashcraft

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife,
Allene Wilson Ashcraft; grandson, Jeffrey Greg Ashcraft; and
brother, Norlyn Ashcraft.

Lockie Bruce, 101, of Crossville, passed away May 4, 2003. Funeral
services were conducted May 6 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial
Funeral Home, with burial in Wilson Cemetery. Vern Daughtery,
Archie Howard and Hank Jones officiated, with music by Robert
Swafford.
Mrs. Bruce was born June 12, 1901 in Dayton, TN, the daughter
of Phil and Rachel Harris.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Frances and Roy
Tollett and Marie Brady, all of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law,
Howard and Irene Bruce of Crossville; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren;
and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Alonzo Bruce; and son, Thomas Bruce.

Cleo Mae Barnwell Love, 78, of Harriman, passed away May 4, 2003.
Funeral services were conducted May 7 from the chapel of Evans
Mortuary, with interment in the Roane Memorial Gardens. Pastor
Jimmy Turner officiated.
Mrs. Love was born Nov. 6, 1924 in Crossville and spent the early
years of her life in Cumberland County. She had resided in Roane
County for the past 60 years.
She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Crossville
for over 60 years. She was a retired sewer with Palm Beach Corporation
with 14 years of service where she was a member of the local
textile workers union and served as the first president of the
local union.
She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed fishing, gardening,
quilting and crocheting.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, John Love of Harriman;
sons and daughters-in-law, John E. and Linda Love of Oakdale;
Dennis and Pat Love, Mark G. Love and Jeff and Pam Love, all
of Harriman; grandchildren, John J. Love Jr., Harvey C. Love,
Marsha Mae Burgess, Jason Swicegood, Tera Love, Bert Love and
Crystal Cord; nine great-grandchildren, sisters and brothers-in-law,
Nell Howard of Harriman, Doris and Albert Clark of Harriman,
Stacey and Paul Wilbanks of Crossville and Paulette and Willard
Kincannon of Harriman; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clyde and

Coba L. Smith

Coba L. Smith, 76, of Indiana, passed away May 3, 2003. Funeral
services were conducted May 6 at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home in
Portland, IN, with burial in Green Park Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born Oct. 10, 1926 in Boatland, TN, the son of
Joel Bertram and Bonnie Hoover.
He was married May 23, 1952 to June Lanning. He worked for Goodyear
Tire and Rubber, Karsh Stone Quarry and also for Horizon Mobile
Home. He was a member of the United Lenape Band of Indians and
had the name "Squirrel Foot." He served with the U.S.
Army during the Korean Conflict and won many awards for sharp
shooting.
Survivors include his wife, June; son, Jonathan Smith of Portland,
IN; daughter, Bonita Jacobson of Indianapolis, IN; two grandchildren;
two step-grandchildren; brothers, Ernest Smith of Muncie, IN,
Lewis Smith of Eaton, IN and Charles Fox Bertram of Jamestown,
TN; sisters, Lorene Dickason of Ridgeville, IN, Ruth Bowden and
Dixie Roberts, both of Jamestown, TN, Nancy Conaster of Mooresville,
IN, Peggy Burton of Williamstown, NJ and Shirley Pryor of Crossville;

Mrs. Allen was born Dec. 9, 1916 in Sandusky, OH, the daughter
of Bert R. Ward and Eva Clieger Ward.
She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Jacquelin L. "Jacki"
and Edison Massey of Fairfield Glade; son, Douglas W. Allen of

Mr. Garcia was born May 2, 1935 in Ithaca, NY, the son of Louis
and Dorothea Garcia.
He was an engineer for the New York Telephone Co. and was a U.S.
Army veteran.

Donald Paul "Moe" Jarvis Sr., 79, of Crossville, passed

Mr. Jarvis was born March 29, 1924 in Burlington, VT, the son
of Joseph Walter Jarvis and Mabel LaPlant Jarvis.
He was an auto body repairman and of the Catholic faith. He served
in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his sons, Donald Paul Jarvis Jr. and Allen
Jarvis, both of Richmond, NH; two grandchildren; and brother,

Harry Lynn Kelly Sr., 79, of Crossville, passed away May 2, 2003.
Funeral services were conducted May 5 at Central Baptist Church,
with burial in Pikeville City Cemetery in Pikeville, TN. Bro.
Roland Smith and Bro. Billy Kemp officiated. A Masonic Service
was held at the cemetery.
Mr. Kelly was born Oct. 21, 1923 in Pikeville, TN, the son of
Harry Arthur and Juanita Chisam Kelly.
He graduated from Bridgeport High School in Bridgeport, AL. He
was a recipient of a football scholarship and attended Vanderbilt
University. In 1985 he retired from CSX Railroad as an agent
operator in Murfreesboro. He was a previous manager of customer
service at Wauhatchie Yard in Chattanooga with the Louisville
and Nashville Railroad.
Mr. Kelly retired with a 27-year career of railroading. He was
also elected Road Supervisor of Bledsoe Co. in Pikeville, TN.
He was a very dedicated and enthusiastic person to the Republican
Party and a member of the Cannon County Election Commission.
Mr. Kelly was a member of Central Baptist Church in Crossville.
He held membership with Scottish Rite and Alhambra Temple in
Chattanooga. He was a Master Mason and a 50-year member of the
Masonic Lodge in Pikeville.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Mary Jones Davenport
Kelly; sons, Lynn, Wade and Blake Kelly of Pikeville; stepsons,
Terry Davenport of Morristown, Tony Davenport of Crossville and
Chris Davenport of Maryville; nine grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren;
eight great-great-grandchildren; niece, Judy Hamric Wyatt of
Lebanon; and nephew, Kelly Hamric of Germantown.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son,
Charles Samuel Kelly; and sister, Joyce Kelly Hamric.

Otto Alec Burgess, 85, of Crossville, passed away May 11, 2003.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 16,
from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Lantana
Cemetery. Bro. David Dalton will officiate, with special music
by the Lantana Church of Christ Singers.
Mr. Burgess was born Jan. 8, 1918 in Cumberland County, TN, the
son of Fancy Hill and Recie Croft Burgess.
He was a retired machine operator, having worked for National
Cash Register in Dayton, OH. He loved to walk and collect aluminum
cans. He greatly enjoyed going to the senior center, especially
when bingo was being played. The undying love for his children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren was endless. The love and
dedication he had for his church, Lantana Church of Christ, was
unfailing. His family will cherish forever the memory of his
favorite saying, "You can't love something that can't love
you back."

and sons-in-law, Vivian Cook of Pahrump, NV, Grace and Duke Tilton
of Oak Harbor, WA, Frances and Frank Ramirez of Culver City,

Joyce Salvage, 86, of Crossville, passed away May 13, 2003. Visitation
will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., with funeral services following
at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 16, at the First United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Carolyn Bingham will be officiating.
Mrs. Salvage was born Feb. 24, 1917 in Coshocton, OH, the daughter
of Noyes and Ione Glass Trottman.
She was a registered nurse and of the Methodist faith. She was
also active with the Exchange Club.
Survivors include her husband, William C. Salvage of Crossville;
sons, William N. Salvage of DelRay Beach, FL and Kent Salvage
of Wichita Falls, TX; daughters and son-in-law, Lynda Garson
of Galveston, TX and Lois and Charles Smith of Birmingham, AL;
nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and dear friends,
Michelle Pugh and Alice Hockenberry.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
sister, Lois Clark.
Pallbearers are William N. Salvage, Kent C. Salvage, John B.
Smith, Jason Whitt, Ed Blair and Charles W. Smith.

Jackie M. Lewis, 54, of Crossville, passed away May 14, 2003.
Funeral services were conducted May 17 from the chapel of Crossville
Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in the Thomas Springs Cemetery.

Mr. Lewis was born Jan. 15, 1949 in Crossville, the son of Quillie
Ray and Virginia Bolin Lewis.
He was a school bus driver and a volunteer fireman for Cumberland
County. He was a member of Safe Harbor Baptist Church and will
always be remembered for his CB handle, "Flat Rock."
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Lewis of Crossville; daughter,
Tammy Davis of Crossville; grandsons, Justin and Matthew Davis;
brothers Stanley and Jimmie Lewis of Crossville and Don Lewis
of Illinois; sister, Rebecca Whitcomb of Crossville; several
nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and several
aunts, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers,
Frank and Harvey Lewis; and sisters, Roberta Smith, Johnnie Yoeman
and Sandra Lewis.

Leo Franklin Simpson Jr., 64, of Crossville, passed away May
10, 2003. Funeral services were conducted May 14 at the First
United Methodist Church, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery.

Mr. Simpson was born Aug. 8, 1938 in Morehead City, NC, the son
of Leo F. Simpson Sr. and Hilda Sabiston Simpson.
He was in apparel manufacturing and was a member of the First
United Methodist Church, serving as board member and Sunday school
teacher. He served as 1st Lieutenant in the North Carolina National
Guard. He was a member of the Rotary, serving as past president
and on the board of directors, received the Paul Harrison Award
and served as committee chairman. He was a member of the Chamber
of Commerce, serving as past president, vice president of Existing
Industry and on the board of directors. He served on the board
of directors and as a mediator for VORP. He was an advisor and
board member for Voc-Tech and a member of the American Apparel
Contractor Association, serving as board director and vice president
of Sourcing.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Carlos Simpson of Crossville;
sons, Chip Simpson of Crossville and Scott Simpson of Blountville,
TN; daughter, Leslie Simpson Kidd of Winchester, VA; stepson,
Drew Blalock of Crossville; stepdaughter, Heather Blalock of
Nashville; grandchildren, Lexi, MacKenzie and Sidney Simpson,
Eli and Maddy Kidd and Iris Blalock; and brother, Douglas J.
Simpson of Lubbock, TX.

Eliza Venoy Tabor, 98, of Crossville, passed away May 10, 2003.

Judy Ingram.
Mrs. Tabor was born Feb. 12, 1905 in Putnam County, TN, the daughter
of Alex and Dora Lowe Howard.
She was a loving wife and mother and a member of Oak Hill Community
Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Allene and Dr.
James Lee of Chehalis, WA; sons and daughters-in-law, Kelly and
Rendi Tabor of Pleasant Hill, Delley Tabor of Crossville and
David and Sue Tabor of Crossville; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren;
one great-great-grandchild; and son-in-law, James Gentry of the
Tabor Loop community.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Logan Alonzo Tabor;
daughters and son-in-law, Venoy and Arlis Breeding, Elizabeth

David L. Barnwell, 85, of Crossville, passed away May 11, 2003.
Funeral services were conducted May 13 at the Pomona United Methodist
Church, with burial in Pomona Cemetery. Bros. Bratton Tucker
and Buford Kelley officiated, with special music by the Pomona
Church Choir.
Mr. Barnwell was born Jan. 8, 1918 in Cumberland County, TN,
the son of George and Jeanie Griffis Barnwell.
He worked in stone quarries over 30 years and retired with 10
years at Carter's Inc.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Lavena Myers Barnwell
of Crossville; special brothers-in-law and their wives, Al and
Betty Myers and Lawrence and Nina Myers, all of Crossville; and
a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers,
Charlie, Fred, Horace, Gid, Frank, John, Almon and Albert Barnwell;
and sisters, Elizabeth Rector, Rhoda Bell and Willie Barnwell.

Graham, Teddy Wyatt, Randy Barnwell and Danny Jones.

Jenny L. B. Colbert
Dec. 30, 1923 - May 15, 2003
Jenny Lucille Beadle Colbert, 79, of Overland Park, KS, passed
away May 15, 2003, at the Delmar Gardens of Lenexa. Members of
her family were at her side.
Funeral services were conducted May 19, 2003, at the McGilley
& Hoge Chapel in Overland Park, KS, with entombment in the
Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum in Lenexa, KS.
Mrs. Colbert was born Dec. 30, 1923 in Crossville, the daughter
of Thomas and Laura Redwine Beadle.
She was one of the first operators at the Oak Ridge, TN nuclear
weapons facility. She earned her State Teacher's Certificate
at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute and at age 18 began teaching
in Cumberland County, TN. World War II soon interfered, and during
early 1943, she was recruited for electrical engineering training
at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She was then sent
to work at the secret Oak Ridge Project where she was later promoted
to supervisor.
After the war she returned to college and began singing on her
own weekly radio show to help pay school expenses. She married
Robert H. Colbert, a discharged veteran, in 1946. During Mr.
Colbert's college years, Jenny taught in Memphis and Knoxville,
TN. Later she became a "stay at home mom," raising
three children.
She was a member of the Overland Park Presbyterian Church and
had a lifelong interest in politics, enjoying volunteer campaign
work for various candidates. Her hobbies were her flowers, fishing
and cooking for family and friends. She had an enormous love
of people, music, flowers and animals.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Robert H. Colbert;
sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Terry and Sharon S. Colbert
of Lenexa, KS and William H. and Sharon L. Colbert of Merriam,
KS; daughter, Katherine J. Remak of Novato, CA; granddaughter,
Jennifer Hamilton; grandsons, Matthew, Michael and Jesse Remak,
John and Ronald Colbert and Paul Snider; great-grandson, Alex
Hamilton; and great-granddaughters, Paige Snider and Lauren Hamilton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Laura Redwine
Beadle; brother, James Thomas Beadle; sister, Lillian Williams;
and her aunt and uncle who raised her, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Beadle.

Virginia "Ginny" J. Jones, 51, of Crossville, passed

Mrs. Jones was born Jan. 28, 1952 in Washington, NJ.
She was a school teacher and a member of Cumberland Fellowship
Church.

Tom and Robin Newton of Ravenwood, MO and Marty and Melissa Byrd

Mrs. Lohman was born Oct. 24, 1926 in St. Joseph, IL, the daughter
of John and Anna Belle Wincet Fabert.

was a retired furnace operator at Roane Electric Furnace, with
28 years of service.

Kathryn Mae Phipps

Kathryn Mae Phipps, 78, of Chula Vista, CA, passed away Monday,
May 5, 2003.
Mrs. Phipps was born June 25, 1924 in Mount Healthy, OH.
When she was nine years old, she moved with her family to the
ancestral home of her father, Harrison W. Wyatt. She graduated
from Cumberland County High School. At the age of 20, she taught
grades 1 through 8 in a one-room school in the rural community
of Bowman.
As a young girl, she joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church an was
an active member as a young woman.
Kathryn and her husband, Carl, had made the San Diego area their
home since 1947. Carl was in the military, so she and her son,
Carl Jr., often made Crossville their home with her parents,
Harrison W. Wyatt and Lillian E. Dysert of Pennsylvania.
She had been an active member of Highland Avenue Baptist Church
of National City, CA since 1954 and remained so until her illness
progressed.
Kathryn was a bookkeeper for F.W. Woolworth for 28 years, from
which she retired.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Carl Phipps; son and
daughter-in-law, Carl and Denise of Bonita, CA; grandson, Carl
Donald and his wife, Gabriela; sisters, Evelyn L. Herman of Crossville,
Beatrice J. Bell of Carroll, OH, Helen J. Filyaw of Knoxville,
Vera A. De La Cruz of San Diego, CA and Nancy E. Kuil of Corbin,
KY; brother, Ralph V. Wyatt of Nashville; 10 nieces; 11 nephews;
a host of grandnieces and grandnephews; and a host of loving
relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her infant son, Roger Gentry; her
parents, Harrison W. and Lillian E. Wyatt of Crossville; Charvella
M. West of Mineral Wells, TX; Louis Roland Wyatt of Crossville;
infant sister, Janet E. Wyatt of Mount Healthy, OH; and Neil
H. Wyatt of Crossville.
A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church in
Crossville at 10:30 a.m. on May 31, with Danny Bell officiating.
Interment will be in Woody Cemetery in Crossville.

Mr. Kinney was born April 26, 1939 in Bradford, PA, the son of
Frank and Margaret McGee Kinney.
He was a retired deputy sheriff in Manatee County, FL and a member
of the Moose Lodge.

daughters, Gina Lina Weaver of Baytown, TX, Tina Baxter of Deridder,

She was a quality control inspector for Bridgeport Brass and
of the Methodist faith.

Mrs. Merritt was born Aug. 29, 1956 in Cumberland County, TN,

Robert Lowell Pugh, 61, of Crossville, passed away May 19, 2003.

Mr. Pugh was born July 9, 1941 in Cumberland County, TN, the
son of Walter and Jewel Parsons Pugh.
He was a salesman for Flemings Foods & Co. He played high
school football for the Cumberland County Red Devils. He loved
to garden and work in the flowers and greatly enjoyed playing
golf.
Survivors include his wife, Jolynn Pugh of Crossville; father,
Walter Pugh of Crossville; son, Tim Pugh of Crossville; stepson,
Randall Smith of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, Gina and
Jerry Turner of Crossville; stepdaughter, Sissie Turner of Crossville;
brothers, Don Pugh of Columbia, TN, Steve Pugh and Larry Pugh,
both of Crossville; sister, Carlene Perkins of Crossville; and
grandchildren, Jade, Destiny, Dillion, Travis and Carissa.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jewel Parsons Pugh.

Lane Walker, 54, of Rocky Face, GA, passed away May 22, 2003.

Nathan Walker of the United States Virgin Islands and Chris Morrison
of Rocky Face, GA; grandchildren, Aston Lane and John Bailey
Walker, both of Crossville; mother, Mary Lou Padgett Walker of
Crossville; sister, Wanda Walker of Crossville; brother, Dewayne
Walker of Encinitas, CA; and others close to heart, Bill, Sheila,
Billy, Karen, Brady, Katie, Todd, Louise, Clayton and Dimple
Shoopman.
His father, Earl Walker of Crossville, preceded him in death.
It was his belief that life and death should be joyous occasions,
not mournful.
