Marilyn Baxter, 79, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Feb. 27, 2002. No services are planned. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
Mrs. Baxter was born Aug. 20, 1922, in Cincinnati, OH, the daughter of Edward A. and Norma Jean Lorenz.
She was a retired actress and teacher.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Terry L. and Pat Baxter of Lyme, NH; daughter and son-in-law, Bob and Marsha Desjardins of Fairfield Glade; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Edward A. Lorenz; mother, Norma Jean Lorenz; and husband, Bill T. Baxter.

Paul E. Beam
July 16, 1926 - Feb. 22, 2002
Paul Elwood Beam, 75, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Feb. 22, 2002.
Mr. Beam was born July 16, 1926, in Trotwood, OH, the son of Arthur and Ruth Lindsay Beam.
He was a food broker, and of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his wife, Elinor Lou Noble Beam of Fairfield Glade; son, Jim Beam of Springboro, OH; daughter, Vicki Beam of Cincinnati, OH; stepdaughter, Eileen Archdeacon-Chessler of Parish, FL; and stepsons, Eric Archdeacon, David Archdeacon, John Archdeacon and Bruce Archdeacon, all of Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ned Archdeacon.

James E. Carson
July 15, 1917 - Feb. 16, 2002
James E. "Jim" Carson, 84, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 16, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 19 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Jack Irvin officiated.
Mr. Carson was born July 15, 1917, in Sevier County, TN, the son of James and Margaret Carson.
He was a farmer and mechanic, and a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Violet Carson; brothers, Lynn Carson and John Carson, both of Crossville, and Doyle Carson of Alabama; stepchildren, Estel Payne of Texas, Wilma Payne of Roane County, TN, and Wendell Payne of Rockwood; and a host of stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Margaret Carson; a sister; and his first wife, Hazel Carson.
VFW Post 6277 Honor Guard served as pallbearers.

Gloria Aldene Cochran, 75, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Feb. 24, 2002. Graveside services were conducted Feb. 28 at Twin Valley Memorial Park Cemetery in Delmont, PA. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m. at Fairfield Glade Community Church.
Mrs. Cochran was born Jan. 24, 1927, in Edmon, PA, the daughter of Thomas and Mabel Fink Strong.
She was a registered nurse, and a member of Fairfield Glade Community Church.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard Cochran of Fairfield Glade; daughter, Joyce Wilson of Brossard, Quebec, Canada; brother, Thomas Strong of Kentucky; and sister, Naomi Whaler of Johnston, IA.

Charlie Davis, 83, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 24, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 27 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in New Era Cemetery. Pastor Rudy Oakes officiated.
Mr. Davis was born Aug. 16, 1918, in Cumberland County, the son of Landon and Alice Walker Davis.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, David and Sherry Davis of Cleveland, TN; daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Bob Jennings, and Angie and Mike Woolum, all of Cookeville; seven grandchildren; and special friend, Sue Lawson of Crossville.
Pallbearers were Tony Lawson, Donnie Lawson, Floyd Turner, Thomas Turner, Jonathan Lawson and Alvin Sherrill.

Joyce M. Hendrickson

Joyce Minerva Hendrickson, 66, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 21, 2002. A memorial service was held Feb. 24 in the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with Bro. Jerry McClain officiating. Burial was in Spring City Cemetery.
Survivors include her sons, James Henry Yates of Crossville and Howard Stanley Hendrickson of Dyersburg, TN; daughter, Pam Steyn of Porter, TX; sisters, Phyllis Lowery and Gaynelle Lowery, both of Crossville; one grandchild; one step-grandchild; and four step-great-grandchildren.

James Edward Lamar "Jim" Long, 75, of Gruetli-Laager, TN, passed away Feb. 28, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 3 from the chapel of Layne Funeral Home in Palmer, TN, with Minister Jimmy Hall officiating. Interment was in Fall Creek Cemetery, with full military honors.
Mr. Long was born Sept. 9, 1926, in Palmer, TN, the son of Abe Wallace and Ova Owens Long.
He was retired from the U.S. Navy and the Carrier Corporation, and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Palmer Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Joyce Sweeton Long; daughter, Nelda Phillips of Jasper, TN; son, Jimmy Long of Gruetli-Laager; sisters, Kathleen Choat of Oak Ridge, TN, Lenora Henke of Aberdeen, WA, Dorothy Clawson of Kent, WA, and Jerrie Morgan of Hermitage, TN; brothers, Sherwood Long of Gruetli-Laager and Lawrence "Rocky" Long of Crossville; grandchildren, Brian Phillips Jr., Heather Phillips Friant and Sheena Long; great-grandchild, Caitlyn Phillips; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ted Long, Jack Long, Stanley Long, Bill Long and Charles Long.

Marilyn Jane Paulosko, 71, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Feb. 26, 2002. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 6 at noon at Resurrection Cemetery in Geneva, IL.
Mrs. Paulosko was born Aug. 18, 1930, in Painesville, OH, the daughter of Harold and Eleanor Reed Austin.
She was united in marriage to Robert J. Paulosko on Oct. 31, 1953, in Mentor, OH.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Lou Keyster of Montgomery, IL, Deborah Shulman of Orlando, FL, and Cindy and Kevin Rogers of Sugar Grove, IL; grandchildren, Scott Keyster and Robyn Keyster, both of Montgomery, Parker Shulman of Orlando, and Ericka Rogers, Paige Rogers and Joshua Rogers of Sugar Grove.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Alice E. Baylor, 77, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Feb. 25, 2002. A memorial service was held March 1 at Christ Lutheran Church in Fairfield Glade, with Pastor Jerry Weeks officiating.
Mrs. Baylor was born March 31, 1924, in Crestline, OH, the daughter of Harold and Bess Burcau Fryer.
She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband, Walter Baylor of Fairfield Glade; son and daughter-in-law, Chief Master Sgt. Alan and Connie Baylor of Langley Air Force Base in Langley, VA; and granddaughter, Erin Baylor.
She was preceded in death by her son, Harold Baylor; and sister, Cordelia Adams.

Peggy J. Dalton, 61, of Crossville, passed away March 2, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 4 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. The Rev. George Long officiated, with special music by Estelle Baker and Julie Giddings.
Mrs. Dalton was born Aug. 3, 1940, in Cumberland County, the daughter of Oliver and Beulah Pryor Campbell.
She was a member of First Christian Church.
Survivors include her father and mother, Oliver and Beulah Pryor Campbell of Crossville; husband, Lynn Dalton of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Mickey Erwin of Crossville; son, Jason Bart Dalton of Knoxville; daughter and son-in-law, Penny Erwin Chubb and Don Chubb of Mt. Juliet, TN; brothers, Bo Campbell of Bowling Green, KY, and Richard Campbell of Crossville; and granddaughter, Kristen Erwin of Crossville.

Opal Jeanette Davis, 88, of Crossville, passed away March 3, 2002. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 7 at 11 a.m. at John W. German Funeral Home in Hayti, MO, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. Dr. James Adams will officiate.
Mrs. Davis was born Aug. 15, 1913, in Pemiscot County, MO, the daughter of Henry and Margaret Smith Gale.
She was a beautician.
Survivors include her daughter, Donna Hale of Fairfield Glade; brother, John Gale of Caruthersville, MO; sisters, Alice Crockett of Lincoln Park, MO, and Betty Edmundson and Frances Clutts, both of Kenneth, MO; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Davis; brother, Guward Gale; and sisters, Jeanice New and Jesse Harder.

Nick Dulisse, 90, of Fairfield Glade, passed away March 4, 2002. No services are planned. The family will have a private interment.
Mr. Dulisse was born Sept. 17, 1911, in Helen, PA.
He was a millwright for Chrysler Corp. for 30 years.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Gerald and Mary Ann Rood, and granddaughter, Sara Rood, all of Fairfield Glade.

Elizabeth Emmaline Gentry, 64, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 28, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 2 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Tollett's Chapel Cemetery. Bro. Dennis Lovell and Bro. Jerry Holman officiated, with special music by Mike Ritzman.
Mrs. Gentry was born June 1, 1937, in Cumberland County, the daughter of Logan and Eliza Howard Tabor.
She was a laundry worker for Best Western, and a member of Woody Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband, James E. Gentry of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law, James D. "Red" and Donna Gentry of Crossville; daughters and son-in-law, Debbie Gentry of Crossville and Juanita and Ken Corn of Tulsa, OK; mother, Eliza Tabor of Crossville; sister, Allene Lee of Seattle, WA; brothers, Buddy Tabor, Delly Tabor and David Tabor, all of Crossville; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Logan Tabor; and sister, Venoy Breeding.

Charles Edward Timmons, 85, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 27, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 1 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Bobby Bown and Phil Jenkins officiated.
Mr. Timmons was born July 5, 1916, in Portland, IN, the son of Edgar and Mary Murray Timmons.
He was a member of Trinity Tabernacle Assembly of God.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Tom Miller of Crossville; grandchildren, Thomas Miller of Clarkrange, TN, Sherri Corum of Crossville, Kraig Miller of Livingston, TN, and Kim Martin of Dayton, TN; seven great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy L. Edwards, 73, of Crossville, passed away March 6, 2002. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Edwards was born April 18, 1928, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Francis and Marie Crouse.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Tom Edwards; sons, Michael Edwards of Henry, IL, and Dr. Timothy C. Edwards of Springfield, IL; daughter, Anita Forbes of Woodstock, IL; and nine grandchildren.

Ona Mae Davis, 82, of Cookeville, passed away March 6, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 9 from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with interment in Smith Chapel Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. The Rev. David Corley and the Rev. Ron Allen officiated.
Mrs. Davis was born Oct. 17, 1919, in Wilder, TN, the daughter of Dillard and Cora Phillips Miller.
She was a homemaker, and had worked with Upper Cumberland Human Resources Agency. She was a member of Living Hope Church in Cookeville.
Survivors include her daughters, Phyllis Burks of Dayton, OH, Diane McElihiney of Nashville and Cindy Huff of Cookeville; sons, Terry Davis of Dickson, TN, Harry Davis of Monterey and Don Davis of McMinnville, TN; sisters, Myrtle Burks and Rosie Winningham, both of Dayton, OH, Inez Smith of Clarkrange, TN, and Lena Todd of Bainbridge, OH; 26 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Davis; son, Tony Davis; sister, Lorene Scott; brother, Elmer Miller; grandson, Michael Burks; and son-in-law, Den Burks.
Mrs. Davis' grandsons served as pallbearers.

Bethel R. Flynn

Bethel Richard Flynn, 81, of Crossville, passed away March 8, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 10 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Flynn's Cove Cemetery. Minister Bill Roberts officiated.
Mr. Flynn was born Nov. 24, 1920, in Cumberland County, the son of Carrol and Martha Walker Flynn.
He was a truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Scarbrough Flynn; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Gene Fitzgerald, Martha Flynn, Evelyn and Thomas Triplett, Cathy and Dennis Cole, Veronica and Max Janow, and Sandy and Jerry Winningham; sons and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Flynn, and Wayne and Vickie Flynn; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carrol and Martha Walker Flynn; sons, Del Flynn and Dennis Flynn; graddaughter, Lesley Janow; brothers, Paul Fields, Baxter Flynn and Basil Flynn; and sisters, Emma Bolin, Ruby Pugh and Ellen Brown.
Pallbearers were Ryan Flynn, Brandon Flynn, Cris Janow, Jarod Flynn, Toby Cooper and John Triplett.

Tony Wendell Morrow, 41, of Crossville, passed away March 2, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 5 from the chapel of Jennings Funeral Home in Jamestown, with burial in Taylor Place Cemetery. Bro. Butch Stapleton officiated.
Mr. Morrow was born June 17, 1961, in Fentress County, TN, the son of Ruby Ethel Worley and William Harrison Morrow.
He was a welder.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Morrow of Crossville; mother, Ruby Ethel Scott of Crossville; daughters, Brady Morrow and Ashley Morrow, both of Crossville; sons, T.J. Anna Mabel Weiss

Anna Mabel Weiss, 100, of Crossville, passed away March 2, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 6 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. Joe Pruett officiated.
Mrs. Weiss was born June 5, 1901, in the Flynn's Cove community of Cumberland County, the daughter of Thomas and Daisy Flynn Vandever.
She was an office worker and bookkeeper for Goodyear, and a member of the Church of Christ. She married Jack Weiss, a foreman for Goodyear, in 1943.
Officials at Cumberland Ridge Assisted Living Center stated that Mrs. Weiss was a wonderful joy to be around; when they had her 100th birthday party this past year, she stated that it was one of the greatest moments of her life.
Survivors include her sister, Edna Getten of Texas, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Weiss; sisters, Hazel Tollett and Myrtle Beyer; and brothers, Dallas Vandever and Fred Vandever.
Pallbearers were Gilbert Young, John Austin, Joe Eller and Greg Hendley.

Lester E. Anderson

Lester Eugene Anderson, 71, of Sparta, passed away March 11, 2002. Private family services will be held at a later date.
Mr. Anderson was born Jan. 7, 1931, in Gainesboro, TN, the son of Lattie and Daisy Anderson.
He worked in central heating and air conditioning, and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his children, Lisa Ann Sewell, Debra Jean Knight and Lester Eugene Anderson Jr., all of Sparta; brother, Fowler Anderson of Lebanon, TN; sisters, Lonell Atnip of McMinnville, TN, and Rozella Bohannon of Nashville; grandchildren, Johnny Knight II, Daniel Knight and Crockett Sewell, all of Sparta, and Ashley Anderson, of California; and his twins, Autumn and Melissa.

Zella H. Perry Collier, 83, of Laurel, MD, formerly of Crossville, passed away March 6, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 12 at the Spencerville Seventh-day Adventist Church in Spencerville, MD. Burial was at the Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville, MD.
Mrs. Collier was born Nov. 1, 1918, in Grapevine, TN, the daughter of Fred H. and Lillie Grace Stone Perry.
She had been a teacher for the Tennessee, Washington, DC and Maryland public school systems.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, William W. Collier; daughter and son-in-law, Catherine Anne Collier Bennett and Kevin Bennett of Columbia, MD; and sister, Zenobia Martin of Crossville.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Zeno Perry, and sisters, Hazel Halvorsen and Beverly Jenkins.

Ms. Fields was born June 14, 1928, in Cumberland County, the daughter of Charles McKinley and Violet Jane Miller Fields.
She was a grocery store owner, and member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include her sisters, Jane Hoover of Crossville, Sara Sykes of Knoxville and Sue Boniol of Maryland; and brothers, Ted Fields of Crossville and Hoyt Fields of Shelbyville, TN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, McKinley and Violet Jane Fields; brothers, Toby Fields, Jay Fields and Howard Fields; and sister, Fay Freeman.

Bethel Richard Flynn, 81, of Crossville, passed away March 8, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 10 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Flynn's Cove Cemetery. Minister Bill Roberts officiated.
Mr. Flynn was born Nov. 24, 1920, in Cumberland County, the son of Carrol and Martha Walker Flynn.
He was a truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Scarbrough Flynn; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Gene Fitzgerald, Martha Flynn, Evelyn and Thomas Triplett, Cathy and Dennis Cole, Veronica and Max Janow, and Sandy and Jerry Winningham; sons and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Flynn, and Wayne and Vickie Flynn; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carrol and Martha Walker Flynn; sons, Del Flynn and Dennis Flynn; graddaughter, Lesley Janow; brothers, Paul Fields, Baxter Flynn and Basil Flynn; and sisters, Emma Bolin, Ruby Pugh and Ellen Brown.
Pallbearers were Ryan Flynn, Brandon Flynn, Cris Janow, Jarod Flynn, Toby Cooper and John Triplett.

Francis Matthew Fogarty, 80, of Fairfield Glade, passed away March 10, 2002. No services are planned at this time.
Mr. Fogarty was born June 14, 1921, in Wilkes-Barre, PA, the son of Francis Joseph and Josephine Connell Fogarty.
He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and POW. He resided in Switzerland, Hong Kong and the United States, and was a member of the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club and the VFW.

Ms. Vandever was born May 13, 1913, in Cumberland County, the daughter of Henry and Tabitha Norris Farr.
She was a member of Main Street Church of Christ.

William "Bill" Edwards Wilbanks, 70, of Crossville, passed away March 5, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 8 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. James Gunter officiating. DAV Chapter 32 performed the presentation of the flag, firing detail and Taps at Green Acres Memory Gardens, with interment following.
Mr. Wilbanks was born Feb. 20, 1932, in Cumberland County, the son of Jesse and Novella Ford Wilbanks.
He was a school bus driver, and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Patton Wilbanks of Crossville; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and James Hall, and Willene and Robert Judd, all of Crossville; sister, Lenora Smith of Crossville; grandchildren, Lane Ashburn, Scott Ashburn and Jessica Regen; great-grandchildren, Brookelyn Ashburn, Danyelle Ashburn, Mary Anne Regen and Bryant "Bubba" Regen; and four step-grandchildren.

Zulah Beatrice Pharris, 91, of the Homesteads community of Crossville, passed away March 7, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 13 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Algood Cemetery. Dr. Dan D. Haskins Jr. officiated.
Mrs. Pharris was born July 13, 1910, in Overton County, TN, the daughter of John and Katherine Copeland Brotherton.
She was a clerk, and a member of Homesteads Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Jo Ann Feder of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; sons, Carson Pharris of Crossville and Robert Pharris Sr. of Orlando, FL; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Gerald "Jerry" W. Bennett, 76, of Sarasota, FL, and a part-time resident of Lake Tansi, passed away Feb. 10, 2002. A memorial service was held at Community Bible Chapel in Sarasota.
Mr. Bennett was born Nov. 12, 1925, in Norway, ME.
He retired after 30 years with the U.S. Postal Service, and was a member of the Letter Carriers Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was of the Lutheran faith.

Mr. Hotsinpiller was born Oct. 18, 1935, in Thornton, WV, the son of Joseph and Betsy Helms Hotsinpiller.
He was an independent trucker most of his life, who owned and operated his own rig.

B.T. Shumpert, 91, of Monterey, passed away March 14, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 16 from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with interment in Welch Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Dewitt Sampley and the Rev. Barry Purser officiated.
Mr. Shumpert was born Aug. 27, 1910, in Mooreville, MS, the son of John Wesley and Dora Shumpert.
He was a machinist with the Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge, retiring in 1975. After his retirement, he owned and operated a successful real estate and insurance business in Monterey. Mr. Shumpert served as an alderman for the city of Monterey and was a member of the men's group of Hardee's of Monterey. He was a 37-year member of Monterey First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Edith King Shumpert of Monterey; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Ed Witt of Fairfield Glade, and Jeannette and James Miller of Oak Ridge, TN; sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Maryln Shumpert of Oak Ridge, and Jack and Norma Shumpert of Buford, GA; the mother of his four children, Mary Myers of Oak Ridge; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Lloyd and Barbara King of Sunset Beach, NC; sister, Clara Medcalf of Mooreville, MS; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and many business associates and friends.

Mrs. Yeoman was born May 31, 1928, in Clifty, TN, the daughter of Quillie Ray and Dorothy Ellen Driver Lewis.
She worked in retail sales.

Mrs. Matter was born Feb. 15, 1968, in Gowanda, NY, the daughter of William Gilray and Florine Jackson Ackley.
She was a graduate of Jamestown (NY) High School, and graduated from Jamestown Community College with a degree in computer science. She was employed by Bush Industries as a pack readiness coordinator. She was a member of the Jamestown Area Girl Scouts, where she was a troop leader.
She married Ronald R. Matter Jr. on Nov. 3, 2001.
Survivors include her father, William Gilray of Crossville; mother, Florine Jackson Ackley of Belfast, NY; husband, Ronald R. Attie L.E. Norris
April 13, 1914 - March 15, 2002
Attie Lee Evans Norris, 87, of Crossville, passed away March 15, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 17 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Thomas Springs Cemetery. Bro. Arlon Way and Bro. Joe Pruett officiated, with special music by the Church of Christ Singers.
Mrs. Norris was born April 13, 1914, in the Thomas Springs community of Cumberland County, the daughter of Robert Anderson and Winnie Pearl VanWinkle Evans.
Her parents both died Jan. 3, 1919, during the flu epidemic that was sweeping across the United States and several foreign countries, killing millions. Her grandfather, Henry VanWinkle, built both caskets the night of her parents' death, when he realized they would not survive.
Her grandparents, Henry and Sarah Norris VanWinkle, took in Attie and her sisters. Her grandmother passed away about year later, leaving her grandfather to raise the four girls alone until they were grown.
Mrs. Norris attended high school at Pleasant Hill Academy, and was salutatorian of her graduating class of 1931. She attended Tusculum College for one year in Greeneville, TN - waiting on tables to pay her way. She continued her education at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville by taking courses at night and on Saturdays, and also during summer breaks from the school term - she was teaching on a permit, while raising five children. She went on to obtain a master's degree and took several courses beyond, at TTU and the University of Tennessee.
She began her teaching career in a one-room school, teaching all eight grades. She later taught fourth grade at the City School in Crossville for many years, and then went to Cumberland County High School. She taught in the classroom at CCHS until she completed courses at UT and TTU, which qualified her for the position of guidance counselor. She remained in this position until her retirement at age 66, with more than 42 years as an educator in the Cumberland County School System.
She enjoyed her retirement by spending time with her children, sisters and many other family members and friends, and attending church services as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the Newton Church of Christ.
The past two months were spent at Country Place Health Care Center, where she reunited with many old friends, made many new friends and received and greatly enjoyed many visits and cards from family members and friends. She enjoyed telling the stories of her past and could remember in great detail many of the memories of her childhood.
She was very proud of all her children and would talk very openly with anyone who would listen of her love for her children. She never was too sick or tired to worry about them when they were sick, and as quoted by her son, Verrill Norris, "She sure did do a fine job raising five children."
Survivors include her son, Verrill Norris; son and daughter-in-law, Carson and Kay Norris; daughters, Geraldine Story and Jewel Roy, both of Crossville, and Lorelle Norris of Nashville; sisters, Ellen Wyatt, Nota Flowers and Vada Gibson, all of Crossville; grandsons, Steve Norris and Tony Norris, both of Crossville, Lloyd Story of Birmingham, AL, and John Roy of Phoenix, AZ; granddaughters, Cindy Norris Rice and Amy Roy Vanlandingham, both of Crossville, and Lavonna LaPointe and Susan Adams, both of Nashville; great-granddaughters, Allison and Abigail Norris and Mikayla Vanlandingham, all of Crossville, and great-grandson, Brandon LaPointe of Nashville; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Norris; an infant granddaughter; an infant sister; daughter-in-law, Brenda Elizabeth Brown Norris; and grandson, Patrick Evan Lewis.
Pallbearers were Thomas Evans, Wade England, Marc Barnwell, Larry McDuffie, Ross Daves and R.G. Scarbrough.

Everett A. Owens
Dec. 2, 1927 - March 13, 2002
Everett Almarine Owens, 74, of Crossville, passed away March 13, 2002. A memorial service was held March 15 at Crossville First Baptist Church, with Bro. David Wilkerson officiating.
Mr. Owens was born Dec. 2, 1927, in Minden, WV, the son of Beldon P. and Katherine Farmer Owens.
He was retired from the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a civil service construction inspector, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Patricia Kasey of Virginia Beach, VA, and Rebecca and M.H. Koucheki of Crossville; sisters, June Comer of Charlotte, NC, and Rebecca Menefee of Oak Hill, WV; and grandchildren, Leilea Koucheki, Cameron Koucheki, Cassidy Koucheki, Matthew Kasey and Joshua Kasey.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ayako Ebihara Owens; and brother, Harold Owens.

Annie Belle Perry, 89, of Cumberland County, passed away March 11, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 14 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Haley's Grove Cemetery. Bro. Noble Wright officiated, with special music by the Homestead Church of Christ Singers.
Ms. Perry was born Feb. 14, 1913, in Cumberland County, the daughter of Mike and Mary Allison Morgan.
She was a member of Homestead Church of Christ.
Survivors include her sister, Pearl Nelson of Rockwood, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

Edna Burden, 77, of Crab Orchard, passed away March 11, 2002. Funeral services were conducted March 14 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Haley's Grove Cemetery. Bro. Thomas Hale officiated.
Mrs. Burden was born Sept. 4, 1924, in Rhea County, TN, the daughter of Lloyd and Etta Mae Cooper Ross.
She was a factory worker, and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her sons, Charles Burden of Meridian, MS, Clyde Burden of Suffolk, VA and David Burden of Crab Orchard; daughters, Carolyn Whittenburg of Crab Orchard and Jean Sparks of Jasper, FL; brother, Bobby Ross of Daysville, TN; sisters, Mildred Potter, Lucille Mackie and Katherine McNew, all of Daysville; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Burden.

Alice N. Cofer

Alice Noble Cofer, 92, of Rockwood, passed away March 20, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted today (Friday) at noon from the chapel of Evans Mortuary in Rockwood, with Bro. Alvin Cofer officiating. Interment will follow in Roane Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Cofer was born Jan. 28, 1910, in Rhea County, TN, the daughter of Charles and Ida Mae Hicks.
She was a member of Chevarant United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth Ray and Nevada Cofer of Chattanooga and Leonard L. and Ruth Cofer of Jasper, TN; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Jimmy Bohannon of Crossville; daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Baird of Rockwood; grandchildren, Leigh Anne Topping, Phillip K. Charles J. Courtad
May 24, 1918 - March 19, 2002
Charles J. "C.J." Courtad, 83, of Carey, OH, formerly of Fairfield Glade, passed away March 19, 2002. A memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, March 26 at Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, with burial in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Upper Sandusky, OH. The Rev. Arthur Young, OFM Conv., will officiate.
Visitation will be Monday, March 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey, with a Christian wake service at 8.
Mr. Courtad was born May 24, 1918, in Wyandot County, OH, the son of Lorin and Matilda Enders Courtad.
He owned and operated a farm distributorship for Standard Oil for 33 years, retiring in 1981. He and his wife then lived in Fairfield Glade for 15 years, before moving back to Carey, OH. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater.
Mr. Courtad was a member of the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, was a life member of BPOE #83, K of C #2050 and a former member of the Wyandot County Sheriff's Auxiliary.
He was a volunteer fireman and a member of the Lions Club in Fairfield Glade.
Survivors include his daughter, Connie L. Karpowich of Richmond, VA; son, Chuck K. Courtad of Carey, OH; sister, Thelma McCutchen of Upper Sandusky, OH; brothers, Paul "P.K." Courtad and Dale Courtad, both of Upper Sandusky; grandchildren, Heidi Collier, Ethan Karpowich, Erich Courtad, Brandi Boes, Gabriel Courtad and Joshua Courtad; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Gregory Courtad; brothers, Wayne Courtad, Glen Courtad, Kara "K.W." Courtad, Richard Courtad and Merle Courtad; and granddaughter, Bernadette.

Mayme Vandever Cartwright, 86, of Englewood, OH, passed away March 25, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 29 at 10:30 a.m. at Kindred Funeral Home in Englewood, with Pastor Marvin Eads officiating. Interment will follow at David Cemetery in Kettering, OH.
Mrs. Cartwright was born Dec. 3, 1915, in Crossville, the daughter of George Raymond and Julia E. Whittenburg Vandever.
She retired after 29 years as a printer from NCR, and was a member of Englewood Church of Christ.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Marvin E. and Elizabeth Music of Englewood; sisters, Gladys Hill of Crossville and Beatrice McVey of New Vienna, OH; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eston and Mary Vandever of Middletown, OH, and Emerson and Lois Vandever of South Carolina; grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Ann Welch of Troy, OH, James Welch of Dayton, OH, and Marti and Larry Smallwood of Englewood; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Nicholas, Jacquelyn and Brett; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mrs. Holmes was born April 22, 1932, in Fentress County, TN, the daughter of Sherman and Minnie Florence Baldwin White.
She was an LPN, and was of the Baptist faith. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include her daughters, Connie Watson of Resaca, GA, and Sharon Wyatt of Crossville; sons, Michael Moore of Columbia, SC, Doug Wyatt of Knoxville and Tony Wyatt and Perry Wyatt, both of Crossville; brothers, Dempsey White of Crossville and Clyde White of Dayton, OH; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and good friends, Lela Wyatt and Sally Elmore.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and Florence White; son, Michael Holmes; brothers, Clifford White and Cordell White; and sisters, Ruth Wilson, Juanita Copeland, Leffie Wilson and Clella Garrett.

Mrs. Gilbert was born March 23, 1923, the daughter of Jimmy and Roxie Smith Dial.
