Jack R. Harms
July 25, 1930 - Jan. 13, 2002
Jack R. Harms, age 71, of Fairfield Glade, formerly of Plymouth, MI, sadly was taken from this world on Jan. 13, 2002 by ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou GehrigÕs Disease). A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Upon graduating from the University of Michigan with a civil engineering degree, he worked for General Motors as their head mathematician, designing roads for their proving grounds. However, his love for children led him to pursue a career in education, from which he retired after 34 years 22 years in administration as a high school principal at Thurston High School in South Redford, MI.
Jack received numerous honors and awards through out his years, however, among his proudest was being sponsored by his high school students to run a Òleg,Ó carrying the Olympic Torch for the 1984 Olympics. Another tribute from his students, who always referred to him as Happy Jack due to his constant smiling nature, was the day all 2,000 students and faculty sported Happy Jack T-shirts with his picture on them.
He held the office of president for the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals. Thought of highly by his peers throughout the educational field, he was inducted in to the Michigan Educators Hall of Fame in 1990.
After his retirement from education, Jack became a certified financial planner and did it for the challenge involved and to help people. The income meant nothing to him from this endeavor but to be able to help others through his knowledge gave him deep satisfaction. The beauty of the Plateau beckoned, and he and his wife, Adrienne, moved here in 1996.
Jack was very involved in community services and showed this time and time again through his 30-year involvement with Rotary. He was president of the Redford, MI, and Fairfield Glade Rotary Clubs. At the time of his diagnosis with ALS, he was Rotary District Governor-Elect for 2001-02, for Rotary District 6780, which encompasses the area of Tennessee just east of Nashville and border-to-border north, west and south, with over 3,500 Rotarians.
He was responsible for instituting the currently ongoing READ (Rotary Early Academic Development) Program, which involves all three Cumberland County Rotary Clubs. This program strives to provide a book each month to children enrolled with certified childcare providers. The program was established to gain early intervention with children ages 1-5 to foster and encourage reading in their worlds, thus opening the world of possibilities for them to aspire to in their adult lives.
He was proud of his involvement with the SMILE program and as mentor to Jeremy Moore for almost five years. Jeremy always had a special place in Jack's heart.
His best friend, loving wife and caregiver, Adrienne, of Fairfield Glade, survives him. His legacy lives on through four loving children, Sandy Reay (Tom) of Midland, MI; Rick (Lynn) of Livonia, MI; Kelly McMonagle (Ed Kavanaugh) of South Lyon, MI; and Sean (Jennifer) of Shaker Heights, OH; and, seven grandchildren and dear sister, Yvonne Schmitz (Smitty) of Williamsburg, MI.
He is preceded in death by parents, William and Mignonne (Weigand); and his brother, Bill.
The family strongly encourages any token of remembrance to be sent to the Jack R. Harms ALS Research Fund thought the ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 150, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301-5104. Please note the Jack Harms ALS Research Fund should appear in the check's memo section. All donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of this fund goes toward reasearch and none to administrative costs.
