Valerie J. Alcorn
April 30, 1952 - July 31, 2003
Valerie Jean Alcorn, 51, of Pleasant Hill, passed away July 31, 2003. Memorial services were conducted Aug. 5 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. Ray Alcorn officiating. Graveside committal services were conducted Aug. 6 at the Old Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Alcorn was born April 30, 1952 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of Raymond and Audrey Johnson.
She was a loving housewife and mother. She loved gardening, photography, hiking and animals; was a volunteer for Red Cross and Boy Scouts of America; and helped many other people in need. Valerie will truly be missed by all.
Survivors include her husband, Daniel Alcorn of Pleasant Hill; sons, Matthew and Shawn Alcorn of Pleasant Hill; daughter, Natalie Thomason of Pleasant Hill; parents, Ray and Audrey Johnson of Pleasant Hill; brother, Grant Johnson of Quakertown, PA; and sister, Dawn McCartt of Pleasant Hill.

Irwin A. vonFunk Jr.
Feb. 9, 1922 - Aug. 6, 2003
Irwin A. vonFunk Jr., 81, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Aug. 6. A memorial service was conducted Aug. 9 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gregory Neuzil officiating.
Mr. vonFunk was born Feb. 9, 1922 in St. Louis, MO, the son of Irwin A. vonFunk Sr. and Marybelle Higgert vonFunk.
He was owner of Impco Products, Inc. and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a 1948 graduate of West Virginia University.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 53 years, Katherine McClafferty vonFunk of Fairfield Glade; sons, Phillip vonFunk of Kutztown, PA and Larry vonFunk of Schnecksville, PA; daughters, Marybelle Marzano of Pittsburgh, PA, Katherine Kendall of Atlanta, GA and Christine Connell of Lansdale, PA; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Suhr.
The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Cumberland County.

Boyd Hood
May 6, 1929 - July 22, 2003
Boyd "Buck" Hood, 74, of Crossville, passed away July 22, 2003. Funeral services were conducted July 24 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Linary Cemetery. Bro. Archie Howard and Bro. Gary Howard officiated.
Mr. Hood was born May 6, 1929 in Fentress County, the son of Elbert Isaac and Fannie Williams Hood.
He was self-employed as a tile mason and was a member of Old Independent Baptist Church in Crossville. He loved to play the guitar and enjoyed flea marketing and the Hwy. 127 yard sale.
Survivors include his wife, Lillie Hood of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Jill Hood of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and David Hassler of Crossville; grandchildren, David Lynn and Jody Hassler and Terry and Holly Hassler; great-grandchildren, Misti Lynn Hassler, Amy Nicole Hassler, Dusty Lewis, Dylan Blake Hassler and Dawson Kade Hassler; special niece, Gail Brewer; and several other nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Jason Frady, Terry Hassler, Mike Brewer, Josh Kearley, Eddie Frady and Dave Sojka.

Nathan Ward
Aug. 1, 2003
Nathan "Duke" Ward, 87, of Marietta, GA, passed away Aug. 1, 2003. Funeral services with full military honors were conducted Aug. 3 at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, with Dr. Randy Mickler officiating. Interment followed at Westview Cemetery.
Mr. Ward was a retired United States Army Lt. Col. (Reserves) with 36 years of service, having served in World War II and the Battle of the Bulge, where he received the Bronze Star. He was a member of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church and a member of the American Legion "Silk Stocking Unit."
He was the building maintenance supervisor at Ft. McPherson for 29 and a half years.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Martha Ward; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Pam Ward of Highlands, NC; grandson, Lanier Ward of Highlands, NC; brothers, Lonnie Ward of Houston, TX and Dexter Ward of Crossville; and sisters, Trusta Adams of Crossville, Minerva Jones of Dayton, OH and Boots Pennington of Dayton, OH.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Duke Ward Memorial Fund, c/o Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, 4385 Lower Roswell Rd., Marietta, GA 30068.

Ruth M. Barnett

Ruth Marie Barnett, 60, of Crossville, passed away July 30, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 1 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, with Bro. Mike Kerley officiating. Graveside committal was held Aug. 2 at the Antioch Cemetery in Hebbertsburg.
Mrs. Barnett was born March 7, 1943 in Richmond, IN, the daughter of William Kurtz Sr. and Sarah Jane Adams Kurtz.
She was a housewife and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Barnett of Crossville; daughters and son-in-law, Tammy and David Barnette and Julie Barnett, all of Crossville; grandchildren, Nathan and Chris Chau, Carlos, Adrianna and Jasmine Barnette; brother, Bill Kurtz Jr. of Indiana; sisters, Betty Cannon of Indiana, Edith Shirley of Mississippi and Geneva Poole of Woodbury, TN; stepdaughter, Sheila Chau of Florida; and many special children that Ruth babysat through the years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Lilburn Northern; sisters, Dorothy, Louise and Josephine; and son-in-law, Tommy Chau.

Heiskell K. McCall
Aug. 3, 2003
Heiskell Kemmer McCall, 78, of Gulfport, MS, passed away Aug. 3, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 6, 2003 at Riemann Funeral Home in Gulfport, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport.
Mrs. McCall was a native of Grassy Cove, TN and a long time resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She was a graduate of Cumberland County High School in Tennessee and of Gulf Park College in Long Beach.
She was a member of Mississippi City United Methodist Church, a past president of the Broadwater Country Club Auxiliary, a member of the Four Seasons Garden Club and a past president of the Revelers, oldest ladies' coast carnival group.
Survivors include her husband, Cummings McCall of Gulfport; sons, Mac McCall of Alexandria, LA and Charlie McCall of Ofallon, MO; daughter, Kemmer McCall of Gulfport; and grandchildren, Salissa and Erin Wahlers, Carolyn, Mary and Katie McCall.
She is preceded in death by her father, John Crook Kemmer Jr.; mother, Ruth Elizabeth Robinson Kemmer; brother, John C. Kemmer III; and sister, Bettye Davenport.
The family prefers memorial contributions to Gulf Coast Women's Center for Non-Violence, P.O. Box 333, Biloxi, MS.

Evelyn L. Niedermiller
April 10, 1914 - July 30, 2003
Evelyn Louise Niedermiller, 89, of Crossville, passed away July 30, 2003. Services will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Niedermiller was born April 10, 1914 in Evansville, IN, the daughter of Samuel Ver Lee and Ethel Bagby Ver Lee.
She was a homemaker and of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include her daughters, Judith Stephens of Crossville and Evelyn Niedermiller of Michigan; son, Robert Niedermiller of Michigan; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Albert Niedermiller.

Martha Elliott, 89, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 10, 2003. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. CDT Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Cumberland View Cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Fain officiating.
Mrs. Elliott was of the Methodist Faith.
Survivors include her husband, Howard Elliott of Crossville; and sister, Mrs. Roy S. Slone of South Pittsburgh.

Donnie W. Moore Sr.
March 17, 1935 - Aug. 1, 2003
Donnie Willburn Moore Sr., 67, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 1, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 6 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with Bro. Roland Smith officiating.
Mr. Moore was born March 17, 1935 in Alma, OK, the son of Robert Lee and Alma Harmond Moore.
He was a truck driver and lived most of his life in Phoenix, AZ before moving to Crossville eight years ago.
Survivors include his wife, Artie Moore of Crossville; sons and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Barbara Moore of Phoenix, AZ and George Moore of Nashville; daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Mike Bayless of Crossville, Candy and Harold Dixon of Livingston, Christa and Terry Kimbrell of Crossville and Martha Roberts of Phoenix, AZ; 24 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Myra; and grandsons, Christopher and Joseph.

Everett D. Mitchell

Everett Dickinson Mitchell, 88, of Asheville, NC and Fairfield Glade, passed away Aug. 5, 2003. A memorial service will be held in Knoxville on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Fred West officiating.
Mr. Mitchell was born Jan. 23, 1915 in Washington, CT, the oldest son of Jeanette Bullard and Everett D. Mitchell Sr.
After attending the University of Connecticut and the University of Wisconsin, he was employed by Pet Dairy Products in Johnson City, TN; Biltmore Dairy Farms of Asheville, NC; and The Creamery Package Manufacturing of Chicago, IL. From 1955 until he retired in 1980, he was an insurance and securities broker.
Mr. Mitchell had served as a member of the Royal Rhododendron Brigade of Guards, a member of the Asheville Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Biltmore Forest Country Club and the Mountain City Club, all of Asheville.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Parsons Bailey Mitchell; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Mitchell Hunt Arnold and Richard M. Arnold of Murray, KY; brother, John B. Mitchell Sr. of Fletcher, NC; stepdaughters and husbands, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bilbrey of Rockwood; Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey Brewer of Columbia, SC; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hensley of Asheville, NC; Mrs. Daniel Moore of Cashiers, NC and Mr. and Mrs. Ron Sprinkle of Arnold, MD; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Helen Duckett Mitchell; sister, Catherine Anne Mitchell Betty; and brother, James Hunter Mitchell.

 

Rufus S. Baldwin
Aug. 22, 1924 - Aug. 15, 2003
Rufus Shirlah Baldwin, 78, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 15, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 17 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Campground Cemetery in Rockwood. Johnny Goldston officiated.
Mr. Baldwin was born Aug. 15, 2003 in Cumberland County, the son of Shirlah Albert Baldwin and Gertrude Myers Baldwin.
He was a farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Henrietta Baldwin; daughters, Nancy Baldwin of Oak Ridge and Rita Cooper of Crossville; grandchildren, Daniel Keyes, Erin Keyes and David Keyes, all of Crossville; and brother, Guy Baldwin of Crossville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Shirley Baldwin; and brother, Coolidge Baldwin.

Harold Gene Gore, 63, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 12, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 16 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Mayland Cemetery. Carl Hubbard and Reed Jones officiated.
Mr. Gore was born Sept. 7, 1939 in Cumberland County, TN, the son of C.A. "Abi" and Hattie Gore.
He was a truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Pamela Riddle Gore; son, Harold Gene "Herkie" Gore of Texas; stepson, David Estey of Crossville; sister, Edyth Miller of Palm Springs, CA; brother and sister-in-law, Floyd and Janice Gore of Crossville; and grandson, Brandon Gore.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Matthis; and brother, Paul Gore.

Bertram Howard Harris, 87, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 12, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 14 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with Bro. Joe Campbell and Bro. Delbert Umphrey officiating. Graveside services were conducted Aug. 15 at Rocky Hill Cemetery in Knoxville.
Mr. Harris was born May 25, 1916 in Claiborne County, TN, the son of James Milton and Margaret Lee Resnick Harris.
He was a disabled Army veteran having served in World War II and was a a member of Faith Baptist Church. He loved wood working, gardening and watching birds in the back yard.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Harris of Crossville; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Teresa Harris of Knoxville and Greg and Linda Harris of Nicholasville, KY; brothers, Henry E. Harris of Port Orange, FL, James M. Harris of New Albany, IN and Byron Harris of Oregon; sisters, Barbara Waltman of Lake Mary, FL and Nan Sevy of Wheaton, IL; grandchildren, Aundrea Lewis, Kevin Flatter, Samantha Gilbreath, Keith Harris, Kevin Harris, Angela Badgett, James Harris Jr. and Paul Harris; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Matthew J. Fitton
March 3, 1983 - Aug. 12, 2003
Matthew J. Fitton, 20, of New York, passed away Aug. 12, 2003. A memorial service was conducted Aug. 16 at St. John Lutheran Church in New York, with interment in Lakeview Cemetery.
Matthew Fitton was born March 3, 1983 in Cocoa Beach Hospital. He lived with his family in Brackley, England and then returned to live in Hamlin, NY. He was the oldest of three boys including Daniel and Adam. He was not only the tallest at 6'6", he was an example to all.
In fifth grade he won the Delmonte Role Model Award for his class and continued to be a role model to all during his life. He was an athlete and musician and excelled in academics. He played trombone in the Brockport High School band and was a member of Jazz Group. He also played volleyball, football, track and field, but his first love in sports was basketball. As the starting center in his senior year, he led his team in blocks and rebounds.
Matthew was a man of superior work ethic and character and was a friend to everyone who met him. He worked at Wegmans to put himself through college and was a recipient of a Wegmans scholarship. He was a communications major as SUNY Brookport.
He loved his family and will always be a big brother to Dan and Adam. His two fathers will always cherish him, and he was a shining light in the lives of his grandparents. He will always be precious to his mother.

Vertie Ina Stevens Myhre, 91, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 7, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 9 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Bro. David Wilkerson officiated, with special music by Faye Brandon, The Happy Hearts, Mitzie Wilkerson and Carol Marr.
Mrs. Myhre was born Dec. 23, 1911 in Pickett County, TN, the daughter of George and Sarah Nichols South.
She was a licensed practical nurse, housewife and a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Alma Patton of Crossville and Sara Stafford of Nashville; grandchildren, Tommy Byrne of Nashville, Marjean Patton of Crossville and Dexter Allen Patton of Colorado Springs, CO; and five great-grandchildren.

Betty Porter, 75, of the Lake Tansi community, passed away Aug. 8, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 11 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with burial in Big Lick Cemetery. Pastor Jeff Monday officiated, with special music by her granddaughter, Sara Ann Oakes.
Mrs. Porter was born March 6, 1928 in Toccoa, GA, the daughter of Ben and Anna Certain Franklin.
She was a retired nurse and a member of the Tansi Community Church.

Verna M. Simpson

Verna Mae Simpson, 89, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Aug. 9, 2003. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
Mrs. Simpson was born May 21, 1914 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of William and Mary Belle Swatman.
She was a member of St. Raphael's Episcopal Church in Crossville and will be remembered as a tireless worker and volunteer in several organizations, but mostly she will be remembered as a devoted, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carol Simpson of Green Bay, WI and Richard Simpson of Fairfield Glade; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ben Statham of Alpharetta, GA; grandchildren, Adam Simpson, Erin Sopiarz, Anna Dirrim and Sarah Statham; and great-grandchildren, Griffin Dirrim and Katherine Dirrim.

Herthel A. Melton

Herthel Alfred Melton, 69, of London, KY, passed away Aug. 14, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 16 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Turner Cemetery. Bro. Glen Davenport officiated, with remarks by Larry Albert, Bill Story and Marvin Goss. The Veteran Honor Guard of Monterey provided the military honors of presentation of the flag, 21 gun salute and "Taps" at Turner Cemetery.
Mr. Melton was born Aug. 1, 1934 in Cumberland County, TN, the son of Shirley William Melton and Emogene Hall Melton.
He was retired from a military career in the U.S. Air Force, having served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He later was employed in civil service and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Tina Caldwell Melton of London, KY; daughter, Jennifer Melton of Ohio; sons, Robert Melton of New York, William H. Melton of Delaware, Deter Alfred Melton and Fredrick Herthel Melton, both of Germany; sister, Lajuana Fern Story of Crossville; and brother, William David Melton of Crossville.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Louise Hanaway Melton; and daughter, Debbie Melton.

Jan Siggelko, 71, formerly of Atlanta, GA, passed away Aug. 16, 2003. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Fairfield Glade Community Church.
Mrs. Siggelko was born Nov. 19, 1931.
She enjoyed playing bridge, reading and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include her children, sons Pete, Ed and Howard Jr., daughter Stacey and their spouses; and grandchildren, Holly, Jane, Rachel and Ben.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; and daughter, Sandy.

Ruby Dell Ashburn, 71, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 13, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 15 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Davis Cemetery.
Mrs. Ashburn was born Dec. 31, 1931 in Cumberland County, the daughter of Sam and Minnie Burgess Wright.
She was a waitress and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her sisters, Jewel Cymbaluk of Ocala, FL and Dollie Worthington of Vandalia, OH; and stepdaughter, Norma R. Tanner of Crossville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Ashburn.
Pallbearers were Floyd Burgess, Carlos Burgess, Chuck Burgess, Junior Achey, Ike Hall and Fred Medley.

Paul Dean Dille, 46, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 15, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 19 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Woody Cemetery. Bro. Larry Jenkins officiated.
Mr. Dille was born July 6, 1957, in Kent, OH, the son of Carl Burton Dille and Roberta Bartrum Dille.
He had been employed at Mountain Builders Supply Co.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Stomm Dille of Crossville; sons, Barry and Kevin Paul Dille of Crossville; daughters, Lori Lewis, Rachel Dille and Starla Hale, all of Crossville; mother, Roberta Dille of Crossville; sisters, Carol Robbins and Mary Dille of Crossville and Virginia Dean of Ohio; and brothers, Brian Dille of North Carolina, Richard Dille of Crossville, George Dille of Kentucky, Clifford Dille of Sparta, TN and Mike Dille of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Dille; and brother, Robert Dille.

John "Jack" William Eldridge, 70, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 15, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 18 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Bro. Jess Cobb officiated.
Mr. Eldridge was born Feb. 20, 1933 in Cumberland County, the son of Owen Clyde Eldridge Sr. and Sada Naomi Meers Eldridge.
He was retired from the Transportation Department for the city of Crossville and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his sister, Emma Lee Cowan of Tullahoma, TN; and brother, Owen "Bud" Eldridge of Madison, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Owen and Sada Eldridge.
Pallbearers were Ross Chessor, Alex Chessor, Owen C. Eldridge III, Erik U. Eldridge, J.H. Graham Jr., Tommy Calahan, Vance Graham and Darrell Sherrill.

Scott Lee Robbins Jr., 15, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 10, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 14 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Mayland Cemetery. Bro. Cliff Ingram officiated.
Scott was born Jan. 28, 1988 in Cumberland County, the son of Scott Lee Robbins Sr. and Reba Jean Whittaker Robbins.
He was a student of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his parents, Scott and Reba Jean Robbins Sr. of Crossville; sister, Brittany Robbins of Crossville; grandparents, James and Frances Whittaker and Malcolm (Junior) and Emma Robbins, all of Crossville; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Helen Marie Armstrong, 74, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 13, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 18 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Armstrong was born Dec. 23, 1928 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Glenn and Mary Louise Sarazin Baxter.
She was a retired nurses aide with River View Hospital in Trenton, MI, and a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church where she was director of the church Youth Group. She was also a member of the Sewing Guild, AAL and LWML. She loved to do needlework and enjoyed making and collecting porcelain dolls.
Survivors include her husband, Willie Armstrong of Crossville; son, Willie Henry "Bill" Armstrong of Ledyard, CT; daughters and son-in-law, Kathie Bernhardt of Boynton Beach, FL and Gail and Vaughn Miller of Crossville; brothers, Tom Povlich of Brunswick, NJ and Clearance Povlich of Taylor, MI; and grandchildren, Robert Armstrong, Kristen Armstrong, Andrew Gallagher and Amanda and Amy Miller.
Pallbearers were Bob Meyer, Robert Armstrong, Andrew Gallagher, Manuel Cavozos, Casey Robertson, Bill Armstrong, T.J. Plenis and Reed Elmore.

Edythe Louise Hale, 81, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 17, 2003. Memorial services were conducted Aug. 20 at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Lampman officiating.
Mrs. Hale was born May 27, 1922 in New Madison, OH, the daughter of Russell and Katherine Wills Coblentz.
She was a blueprint maker and a member of the Lutheran church.
Survivors include her husband, John Hale of Crossville; son, Bill Hale of Xenia, OH; daughter, Bonnie Lucas of Farmington, MI; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ray and Dale Coblentz; and sisters, Garnet Davis, Bernita Coblentz and Ethel Karns.

Thomas H. Keane III
Aug. 15, 2003
Thomas Harold Keane III, 16, of Trussville, AL, passed away Friday, Aug. 15, 2003. Funeral services were conducted at Ridout's Trussville Chapel on Tuesday, Aug. 19, with burial in Jefferson Memorial Gardens East in Birmingham, AL.
Thomas was an honor student and active in school and community activities. He loved music and played trumpet in the school band. He was a member of other bands where he played both trumpet and guitar. He loved his many friends.
Survivors include his parents, Thomas Harold Keane II and Sharon Keane; sister, Annabelle; grandparents, Thomas Harold and Lena Belle Keane of Pleasant Hill and Mack Siebers of Sparta; and several aunts and uncles.


Frances L. Patterson
August 15, 2003
Frances L. Patterson, 92, passed away Aug. 15, 2003 in Jacksonville, FL. Memorial services were held on Sunday, Aug. 17, at Cypress Village.
Born in Salt Lake City, UT, Mrs. Patterson moved to Florida in 1989. She was a member of the PEO and Arlington Christian Church. On Aug. 29, 2003, she and her husband would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.
Survivors include her loving husband, Harley E. Patterson of Jacksonville, FL; son, Larry (Susan) Patterson of Cary, NC; daughters, Gayle (Tom) Reid of Falls Church, VA and Kathy (Ed) Cratin of Port Orange, FL; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren on the way.

Richard H. Phillips

Richard "Dick" Harold Phillips, 83, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 19, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 22 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. The Rev. Carleton Thackston officiated, with special music by Julia Burgess and Ann Looney.
Mr. Phillips was born March 1, 1920 in Brighton, TN, the son of Grover Clifford Phillips and Mamie DeWese Phillips.
He was a distributor for Texaco and a member of the First United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He went to Officers' Candidate School and was a captain in the U.S. Air Force. He went to Draughn Business College in Memphis, TN and helped build the first nine holes at Tansi Golf Course. He loved playing baseball when he was younger and loved all sports, including softball and golf.
Survivors include his wife, Zeola DeRossett Phillips of Crossville; sons and daughter-in-law, Bob and Sherry Phillips of Crossville and Steve Phillips of Marietta, GA; grandchildren, Chad Phillips of Dallas, TX and Tiffany Phillips of Crossville; and sisters, Evelyn Brumfield and Nell Melton, both of Memphis, TN.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Marion Phillips and Doris Meredith; and brother, Bob Phillips.
Pallbearers were Bill Boston, Roy Stone, Pete Stubbs, Chad Phillips, Paul McNew and Wes Currence.

Ms. Roberts was born Dec. 6, 1964 in Crossville, the daughter of Gordon and Betty Walker.
Survivors include her son, James Carlos Roberts II of Sparta; mother, Betty Walker of Pleasant Hill; and sisters, Peggy Davis of Pleasant Hill; Linda Margenson of Sparta, Bernita Neal of Sparta and Kim Medley of Crossville.
She was preceded in death by her father, Gordon Walker.

Bette L. Scott
Aug. 22, 2003
Bette L. Scott, 61, of Mansfield, OH, passed away Aug. 22, 2003. Private funeral services were held, with burial in Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg, OH.
As a young adult, Ms. Scott was active in missionary programs with the American Indians. She attended Kent State and Meyers College. She worked at Cardinal Services for 25 years and had currently worked for the city of Mansfield. She was active in the Mansfield and State Chapters of BPW and was voted BPW Woman of the Year for 1983.
Survivors include her sister, Nancy Loepp; mother, Lois (nee Jackson) Scott; niece, Stephanie (Thomas) Vanover; nephew, William (Deena) Loepp; great-nieces and nephews, Donnivan, Brenden, Brooke, Corey and William; and other uncles, aunts and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, George W. Scott.

Willie F. (Bill) Bray, 76, of the Stone Community in Jackson County, passed away Aug. 23, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 25 at Anderson Funeral Home in Gainesboro, TN, with burial in Witcher Cemetery in the Bagdad Community of Jackson County. Brother Farlin Flatt and Brother David Flatt officiated.
Mr. Bray was born May 18, 1927 in Jackson County, TN, the son of Sam Bray and Zora Brown Bray.
He was retired from Twin Lakes Telephone Co. and was a member of the Stone Church of Christ, where he served as an elder. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Hoyt Lee Fields, 69, of Shelbyville, passed away July 23, 2003. Memorial services were conducted July 26 at Feldhous Memorial Chapel in Shelbyville.
Mr. Fields was born Oct. 3, 1933 in Cumberland County, the son of the late McKinley and Violet Miller Fields of Crossville.
He was a tool and die maker.

Mrs. Manis was born Aug. 6, 1944 in Putnam County, TN, the daughter of Robert Washington and Dovie Padgett Whittaker.
She was a homemaker and loved her grandchildren very much. She was also an avid UT fan.
