John H. Smith
Feb. 25, 1923 - April 16, 2003
John Herbert Smith, 80, of Crossville, passed away April 16,
2003. Funeral services were conducted April 19 from the chapel
of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carolyn Bingham officiating.
Veterans Honor Guard of Cookeville provided the military honors
of the presentation of the flag, firing detail and Taps at Green
Acres Memory Gardens.
Mr. Smith was born Feb. 25, 1923 in Pickett County, TN, the son
of Floyd and Ona Gunnels Smith.
John Smith came to Crossville in April 1960 to open his own business,
John Smith Professional Pharmacy. Crossville gained not only
a new business, but a community leader, politician and friend.
Smith graduated from Picket County High School and attended one
year at Tennessee Tech. His education was interrupted by World
War II. While in the military, he attended Purdue University,
and in 1949, he completed his education with a B.S. in pharmacy
from the University of Mississippi.
He started his military career by volunteering for the Navy Reserves
in September 1942. He was attending Tennessee Tech when he was
called to active duty in July of 1943. "It was the honorable
thing to do, to go fight for your country," said Smith.
His training began at Great Lakes Naval Training Station before
being shipped out to the Asiatic Pacific to the U.S. Navy 7th
Amphibious Forces. He was discharged in 1946 as a QM 2/C, receiving
Victory and Philippine Liberation Defense medals. He resumed
his military service in the Army Reserves, retiring years later
as a Lieutenant Colonel. He also received the Tennessee Commendation
Ribbon and Army Commendation. His military career spanned a total
of 31 years. Indeed, he was one of the most patriotic citizens
of Cumberland County, and the flags he treasured at his home
and place of business can currently be observed flying at half
staff.
John Smith was also known for his strong affiliation with the
Republican Party. Anyone at the pharmacy can tell you that, at
election time, all the Republican candidates would be spending
some time in John's office "politicking." He rallied
support not only for the local candidates, but for the state
and presidential hopefuls as well. His political positions included:
member of the Tennessee Republican Executive Committee, alternate
delegate at the Republican National Convention, and guardian
charter member of the Republican Presidential Task Force. On
the walls are pictures and letters of thanks from Ronald Reagan,
George Bush and now, George W. Bush. His most recent piece of
memorabilia is his invitation to the inauguration of President
George W. Bush
Smith could also be counted on in supporting community organizations.
He held memberships in the U.S. and Tennessee National Guard
Associations, the American Security Council, the American Legion,
Shriners, The National Federation of Independent Business, First
United Methodist Church, Fellow of American College of Apothecaries,
the Capital Club, VFW, the Heritage Foundation, The Tennessee
Board of Pharmacy (where he also served as president), and the
National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.
Out of all these accomplishments, John Smith was most proud of
his standing as an independent business owner. He supported all
efforts for the small businesses of America. He worked in drug
stores in Cookeville, McMinnville and Sparta for 10 years before
seeing his dream realized and opening his own business. "I
could have bought other pharmacies," Smith said, "but
I didn't want your conventional drugstore." His was the
first apothecary pharmacy in this area. An apothecary pharmacy
stocks only medicinals and closely related health items and convalescent
aids. His was also the first pharmacy in Crossville and only
the second in all of Tennessee to feature a drive-in window.
John Smith Pharmacy was also the first in durable medical equipment
for Crossville and it was one of the first 10 pharmacies to computerize
in Tennessee.
John Smith came to Crossville with a vision, which he fulfilled.
He started his own business that remains state-of-the-art, thriving
after 43 years. He was an active, giving member of his community,
supporting schools, churches, etc.
Smith was also a loving family man. He enjoyed houseboating,
grilling steaks, dancing and seeing the ocean.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Louise Daniel Smith of
Crossville; daughters, Terri Taylor of Knoxville, Vicki Upchurch
of Crossville and Dr. Amy Smith-Barnes of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren,
Katie Taylor, Emily and Luke Upchurch and Savannah Barnes; and

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister,
Elizabeth Groce.

James Callis, James Gabbert and Billy Glen Smith.

until their house was built. The beautiful family home and farm
was on Open Range Road, bordered by Daddy's Creek.
Eva was a member of the first Homestead High School graduating
class in 1939. She was one of the first eight "females"
to be hired at the Homestead Hosiery Mill. Since most men were
gone to war, the mill was forced to try using women. Much to
the supervisor's surprise, the women were better knitters than
the men had been.
Eva saved enough money to be able to take a two-year secretarial
degree at Berea College, KY. She went to work in Oak Ridge and
became secretary to the maintenance supervisor at K-25 until
her retirement.

of Uplands Retirement Village in Pleasant Hill, survive her.
Other surviving relatives are a sister-in-law, Hilda Elmore of
Florida, eight nieces and nephews, 13 great-nieces and -nephews,
and one great-great-nephew, plus many cousins.
Eva was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Thomas Albert
Elmore Jr. and Walter Elmore; and niece, Susan Elmore Dodd.
Growing up in a loving family that sang "when two or more"
were gathered, Eva was gifted with a beautiful soprano voice
in her youth.
Always generous with time, love and support, she cared for her
elderly parents, supported and sent younger sister Jeanne to
Berea College and always laughed with exuberant joy.
Memorial donations should be made to the Pleasant Hill Community
Church Building Fund or the Wharton Nursing Home Capitol Fund,
earmarked for the building fund.
