Nickel Tax Rebellion tops $3,000 mark; funds already put to use

The Nickel Tax Rebellion is a symbolic, unorganized protest of residents of Cumberland County, mostly property owners, who supported the five cents per $100 assessed valuation tax increase with proceeds earmarked for county schools.

There is no leader. There is no organization. These "Jeffersonians" strongly support the school system's request and have voluntarily sent their nickel tax contribution to the school system.

Jeffersonians Bob and Marilyn Johnson fired the first volley in the Nickel Tax Revolt on Oct. 10 when Bob wrote a letter to the editor and included his nickel portion of the tax increase. The following families and individuals joined the Johnsons as of Nov. 25. Total nickels collected are over $3,100.

One Jeffersonian earmarked their nickels for the CCHS choir and those monies were used to help furnish the new choir room.
