A Cumberland County man is dead and two people seriously injured
following a two-vehicle collision on Hwy. 70 W around 6:30 a.m.
Saturday. Two of the occupants of one vehicle were ejected in
the crash.
Dead is Eric Elmore, 27, 3036 Reed Rd. He was airlifted from
Cumberland Medical Center where he had been rushed after suffering
head and internal injuries in the crash.
Critically hurt is Shana Hinch, 19, 985 Pomona Rd. Suffering
serious injuries is Daniel R. Alcorn, 42, 1119 Red Rd., Pleasant
Hill, according to Trooper Ed Barnwell's report.
The accident occurred at the intersection of POW Camp Rd.
and Hwy. 70 W when Hinch, driving a 1986 Buick Century, apparently
ran a stop sign in front of a 1998 Dodge Ram van driven by Alcorn,
Barnwell's report indicated.
Force of the impact ejected both Hinch and Elmore, the latter
who was thrown underneath a truck parked in the Pomona Market
parking lot.
The car was spun around and came to rest half in the westbound
lane while the van careened out of control into the grocery store
parking lot, coming to rest just a few feet from the store's
gas pumps. Cumberland County firefighters had to extricate Alcorn
from the vehicle.
Three ambulances responded to the scene and a sheriff's deputy
drove one ambulance to the hospital while EMTs worked to save
the fatally injured victim.
Hinch and Alcorn were also flown by helicopter from CMC. Their
conditions were not available at press time.
