JAMES HORACE BARNWELL
James Horace Barnwell, 90, of
Crossville, passed away Nov. 17, 2000. Funeral services were
conducted Nov. 20 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with
burial in Pomona Cemetery. Bro. Cliff Ingram officiated.
Mr. Barnwell was born Sept. 8, 1910, in Cumberland County, the
son of George and Willie Eugene Griffis Barnwell.
He was a laborer, and of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include three brothers, Frank Barnwell, David Barnwell
and John Barnwell, all of Crossville.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Charlie Barnwell,
Fred Barnwell, Albert Barnwell, Amon Barnwell and Gidd Barnwell;
and three sisters, Elizabeth Rector, Rhoda Bell Barnwell and
Willie E. Barnwell.
Pallbearers were Tony Barnwell, Quinn Barnwell, Michael Barnwell,
Jason Barnwell, David Barnwell and Kenny Moore.

Willis Pryor Bohannon, 61, of
Crossville, passed away Nov. 14, 2000. Funeral services were
conducted Nov. 16 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with
burial in Brown's Mill Cemetery. Bro. Hobert Delk officiated.
Mr. Bohannon was born April 24, 1939, in Putnam County, TN, the
son of Richie and Pearl Abston Bohannon.
He was a farm worker, and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his sisters, Ever Smith and Essie Webb, both
of Rickman, TN, Jessie Smith of Kingsport, TN, and Joyce Dyer
of Cookeville, TN; and brothers, James Bohannon of Cookeville,
Robert Bohannon of Georgia, Claude Bohannon and Raymond Bohannon,
both of Crossville, and Jack Bohannon of Pennsylvania.

Haley Bolin, 20, of Crossville,
passed away Nov. 17, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Nov.
21 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with

Ms. Bolin was born July 2, 1980, in Cumberland County.
She was a homemaker.

Jason Creswell of North Carolina; half-sister, Shaun Gilley of

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Charles Gilley;

Jean R. Cross, 83, of Fairfield
Glade, passed away Nov. 19, 2000, in Cumberland Medical Center.

Ms. Cross was born Aug. 19, 1917, in Milwaukee, WI, the daughter
of Vincent and Margot Crasemann Roberts.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Fairfield Glade Community
Church.

David Cross of Neptune City, NJ, and William Cross of Charlotte,

Judy Beaty Humble, 56, of Crossville,
passed away Nov. 25, 2000. Graveside services were conducted
Nov. 25 at King Cemetery in Fentress County, TN, with Bro. David

Mrs. Humble was born Jan. 25, 1944, in Overton County, TN, the
daughter of Herman and Pearl Jane Vaughn Beaty.
She was a computer lab coordinator, and a member of the Presbyterian
Church.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Humble of Crossville; son,
William Michael Humble of Ontario, Canada; daughter, Linda Humble
Bentley of Lake Elsinore, CA; daughter and son-in-law, Christy
Humble Weeks and Dennis Weeks of Fallbrook, CA; daughter and
friend, Leslie Humble and Bruce Givens of Cedar Lake, IN; brothers
and sisters-in-law, Frank and Joan Beaty, Pat and Glee Beaty

Herbert Kyrk, 79, of Crossville,
passed away March 11, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Nov.

Mr. Kyrk was born March 11, 1921, in Alffa, IL.
He was a minister.
Survivors include his wife, Viola Kyrk of Crossville; son and

MN; brother and sister-in-law, Rueben and Maxine Kyrk of Cincinnati,

Burton McCowan, 88, of Monterey,
TN, passed away Nov. 27, 2000. Funeral services will be conducted
today, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home
in Monterey, with interment to follow in Love Joy Cemetery. The
Rev. Barry Purser and the Rev. Clayton Padgett will officiate.
Mr. McCowan was born Oct. 15, 1912, in Overton County, TN, the
son of William and Burzilla Eldridge McCowan.
He was a coal miner, and a member of Monterey First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of almost 69 years, Martha Phipps
McCowan of Monterey; daughters, Artie Hassler of the Mineral
Springs community near Monterey, Glenna McCowan of Little Rock,
AR, and Lois Ann Hosier of Lebanon, TN; sons, Otis McCowan of
Nashville, TN, Ellis McCowan and Arnold McCowan, both of Monterey,
Avery McCowan of Dayton, TN, Bobby McCowan of Daysville, TN,
and David McCowan of Andersonville, SC; 12 grandchildren; and
nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mazell McCowan; a grandson,
Jerry Hassler; and a great-grandchild, Dylan Bilbrey.

Dorothy "Dot" Kate
Pelfrey, 75, of Crossville, passed away Nov. 16, 2000, in Cumberland
Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Nov. 19 from
the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Crossville
City Cemetery. Bro. Albert Griffin, a family friend, officiated.

Mrs. Pelfrey was born Aug. 28, 1925, in White County, TN, the
daughter of William and Effie Hale Johnson.
She was a secretary, employed by Monticello Canning Company,
and a member of the Church of Christ. She was an Avon lady for
25 years, and a crewette for the Cumberland County Rescue Squad
for 33 years.
Survivors include her husband, Lester Pelfrey Sr. of Crossville;
son, Tommy Pelfrey of Crossville; daughter, Sylvia Lewis of Crossville;
daughter and son-in-law, Shanda and Ted Campbell of Crossville;
daughter-in-law in her heart, Kathy Evans; children in heart,
Randy and Barbara Dinkins; sister, Reba Parham of Crossville;
grandchildren, G.G. Lewis-Hood, Teeter Pelfrey, Jonathan Campbell,
Justin Campbell, Jeremy Campbell, Jeanna Campbell, Kim Lewis-Tabor
and Nicole Golden; and great-grandchildren, Colton Hood, Hailey
Hood and Ty Tabor.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lester Pelfrey Jr.; and a
brother, W.T. Johnson.

Bro. Mills was born July 23, 1914, in Van Buren County, TN, the

He was a retired Church of God minister and a long-time radio
minister in the area. He was a member of Spencer Church of God.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Geneva and Howard
Thomason of Sparta; three granddaughters and their husbands,
Linda Sue and Butch Kahl, Karen and Mitchell Duane Neal and Pennie
and Eugene Shrum, all of Sparta; five great-grandchildren, Jimmy
Neal, Leslie Neal, Bryon Shrum, Lakota Shrum and Ernest "Teddy"

59, of Murfreesboro, TN, passed away Nov. 25, 2000, at Middle

at noon Wednesday, Nov. 29, in Jennings & Ayers Chapel of

Mrs. Scarbrough was born July 6, 1941. The daughter of William
Ralph and Sallie Jane Shipley Brewer, she was a native of Claiborne,
TN, who had lived in Rutherford County, TN, for the past 25 years.
She worked in dietary management at Woodbury Nursing Home and
was a member of United Pentecostal Church of Murfreesboro.
Survivors include her father, William Ralph Brewer of Crossville;
a daughter, Sally Suzanne Scarbrough of Murfreesboro; a brother,
Stanley Clayton Brewer of Chattanooga, TN; two sisters, Alice
Faye Ryle of Burlington, KY, and Mabel Madewell of Ringgold,
GA; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Sallie Jane Shipley
Brewer; and two sisters, Betty Hassler and Wanda Jean Padgett.

Eleanor S. Tippy, 86, of Carterville,
IL, passed away Nov. 25, 2000, in Herrin Hospital of Herrin,
IL. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov.
30 in Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home of Carterville, with burial
in Rosehill Cemetery of Marion, IL. The Rev. Dorothy Cook will
officiate. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Nov. 30 in the funeral
home.
Mrs. Tippy was born Feb. 19, 1914, in Granite City, IL, the daughter
of Lubomir Stefanoff and Gureff Slava.
A 1938 graduate of Southern Illinois University, she taught school
in Illinois and Tennessee for several years. For 46 years, she
and her husband lived in Oak Ridge, where they raised their family.
They moved to Carterville in 1990. She was active in many school
activities and was a charter member of American Association of
Retired Persons (AARP).
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Ryburn R. Tippy of
Carterville; a daughter, Ann Tibbatts of Bethel, CT; a son, Richard
Tippy of Crossville; two sisters, Mary Evans of Pacific Palisade,
CA, and Ruth Heckel of Carterville; eight grandchildren, Brooke
Shay and Ethan Tippy, both of LaGrange, GA, Terri Tibbatts and
Thomas Tibbatts, both of Washington, CT, Luke Tippy of Crossville,
Matthew Tippy of Charlotte, NC, Nathan Tippy of Nashville and
Laurie Williams of Hopkinton, MA; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lubomir Stefanoff and
Grueff Slava; a son, Alan R. Tippy; and a sister, Dorothy Mitchell.

Mrs. Brown was born Sept. 21, 1919, in Cumberland County.
She was a school secretary at Crab Orchard Elementary School
and the Cumberland County Board of Education.

Linda Kerley and Sherry Ray, both of Crossville; sons, Dallas
L. Brown, Noel Brown, Dale Brown, Andy Brown and Jim Brown, all

William "Bill" Forthman
III, 59, of Crossville, passed away Nov. 8, 2000, at the VA Hospital
in Murfreesboro, TN. Memorial services will be conducted Nov.
25 at 1 p.m. at Crossville Martial Arts Studio.
Mr. Forthman was born July 14, 1941, in Buchana, MI, the son
of William E. II and Mary Richter Forthman.
He was a nurse technician. He served three tours in Vietnam as
a Green Beret, receiving a Purple Heart, among other medals.
He held a first-degree black belt in kenpo at Crossville Martial
Arts, and was named Tennessee state karate champion in 1998.
Survivors include his stepmother, Norma Forthman of Palm Springs,
CA; sisters, Sharon Nelton of Downington, PA, and Mary Joanne
Evering of Miami, FL; special friend, Janet Peery of Crossville;
and the karate family at Crossville Martial Arts.

Mr. Jackson was born June 16, 1933, in Fentress County, TN, the
son of the late Horton and Eva Parrish Jackson.
He was a retired branch manager of Citizens Bank (now Union Planters),
Monterey office, and he was a U.S. Army veteran. He was an active
member of Monterey First Baptist Church, having served as deacon,
Sunday school director and Sunday school teacher, and he was
a member of the First Baptist XYZs. He was a member of Monterey
Masonic Lodge No. 751 F&AM.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Gail Neely Jackson; sons
and daughters-in-law, Billy and Milda Jackson, Greg and Diane
Jackson and Jeff and Cindy Jackson, all of Monterey; stepmother,
Willie Stooksbury Jackson of Lake City, TN; seven grandchildren,
Mesena Scott Elliott, Majesta Pierce, Shelly Jackson, Sara Jackson,
Amber Jackson, Ciarra Jackson and Lindsey Jackson; and four great-grandchildren,
Brooklyn Pierce, Cole Pierce, Jackson Elliott and Elijsha Jackson.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Jackson, Charlie
Jackson and Hassel Jackson.

He served 20 years in the U.S. Navy as chief petty officer, achieving
numerous medals. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Chattanooga,

Opera House in Columbus, GA. She was a dedicated member of Fairfield
Glade Baptist Church, serving as Sunday school teacher, choir
member and on numerous committees for the church and missionary
work. She served as former president and member of the Fairfield
Glade Ladies Club, Neighbors and Newcomers and the Cumberland
Plateau Christian Women's Club.
Survivors include her son, Randy Slone of Wadsworth, IL; daughter,
Lori Slone of Woodruff, WI; and three grandchildren, Rebecca
Slone, Ashley Redding and Christopher Slone.

by the Pomona United Methodist Church choir.
Mrs. Swafford was born Oct. 18, 1912, in Cumberland County, the
daughter of Justice H. Sr. and Isola Gamble Graham.
She was a homemaker, and of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include her son, Randy Swafford of Crossville; daughters,
Polly Bryant of Greenville, SC, and Sue Satterlee of New Harbor,
ME; brother, J.H. Graham Jr. of Crossville; five grandchildren;

She was preceded in death by her husband, White Patton Swafford;

Miss Todd was born Aug. 22, 1966, in Cookeville, TN.

Harry Paul Bristow, 78, of Crossville,
passed away Nov. 3, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Nov.

Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 741; Veterans of Foreign

Mr. Bristow was born July 4, 1922, the son of Charles and Lou
Houston Bristow.
He served 20 years in the U.S. Navy as chief petty officer, achieving
numerous medals. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Chattanooga,
TN.
Survivors include his wife, Frances E. Bristow of Crossville;
son, James R. Bristow of Crossville; daughter, Donna M. Bristow
of St. Petersburg, FL; stepdaughter, Judy A. Oster of Chattanooga;

Mrs. Denton was born Aug. 14, 1913, in Cumberland County, the
daughter of Joseph and Lenora Qualls Bilbrey.
She was a teacher for many years at the Crab Orchard School.

son, Robert, Joseph Denton of Crossville; brother, Joe Henry
Bilbrey of Hermitage, TN; and three grandchildren, Jennifer Preletz,

Riley Carl Hawes, 83, of Rockwood,
TN, passed away Nov. 7, 2000. Funeral services were conducted

in Grandview, with full military honors by the Crab Orchard Honor

Mr. Hawes was born May 8, 1917, in Flat Rock, AL, the son of
Thomas and LaVesta Hawes.
He was a self-employed stone mason and welder, and of the Baptist
faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member
of the VFW, Crab Orchard, and IBEW No. 308, St. Petersburg, FL.
Survivors include include his wife, Eula Jane Hawes of Rockwood;
son, Joel Hawes of Rockwood; sons and daughters-in-law, John

Mr. Adkins was born Nov. 12, 1912, in Logan, WV, the son of Randolph

Jack Columbus Nix, 79, of Crossville,
passed away Nov. 2, 2000. Graveside services were conducted Nov.
4 in Green Acres Memory Gardens.
Mr. Nix was born in 1921 in Blairsville, GA.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, before earning
his bachelor's degree from Georgia Tech. He retired in 1982 after
30 years as an electrical engineer with TVA. He was a skilled
woodworker and gardener, and enjoyed playing golf and taking
care of his daughter's dog, Josee.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth R. Nix; son
and daughter-in-law, Stanley H. and Chris Nix of Morris, IL;
daughters and sons-in-law, Gail R. and Mike Cherry of Paris,
TN, Marjorie and John Maher of Brentwood, TN, and Nelle Nix Clapp
and Michael Clapp of Portland, OR; daughter, Jan Nix, who lives
with her many pets in Crossville; sisters, Pearl Nix, Nellie
Hester and Corene Fuhrman; brother and sister-in-law, Roy C.

Serena, 82, of Pinellas Park Mainlands, FL, formerly of Crossville,
passed away Nov. 4, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Nov.

Mr. Serena was born Sept. 5, 1918, in Camden, PA.
He was one of the five original owners of Crossville Rubber Products
Inc., starting the company in 1950 and retiring in 1979. He served
in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He
was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge in Akron, OH, a 50-year
member of Victory Lodge 0649 in Ohio, and a member of Kiwanis.
Survivors include his son, Richard B. Ley of Barberton, OH; daughter,
Dolores Jean Tharp of Pinellas Park, FL; three grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Milligan was born Jan. 23, 1930, in Switchback, WV, the

Mr. Mitchell was born in Crossville, the son of William Clyde
and Naomi Mitchell.
He lived most of his life in Danville, where he was a teacher
at George Washington High School. During his 30-year tenure at
the high school, he taught American history and coached the school's
tennis team, and was a mentor of young people. He was a U.S.
Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Mitchell of Danville, VA; sons
and daughters-in-law, Robert Edson Jr. and Karen Hines Mitchell,
and William Alfred and Lisa Swim Mitchell; sister, Edith Newby;

Mrs. Lathem was born Sept. 19, 1940, in Crossville, the daughter
of Lillian Sapp and the late Frank Sapp.
She was a homemaker, and a member of First Baptist Church of
the Deaf in Greenville, SC, where she taught Sunday school and
formerly led the choir. She was the first president of the organization
that established First Baptist Church of the Deaf, and prior
to "closed captioning," she interpreted the morning
news for WFBC-TV.
Survivors include her mother, Lillian Sapp of Crossville; her
husband, J.K. Lathem of Easley; son and daughter-in-law, Jerome
K. and Joni Lathem of Easley; daughters and sons-in-law, Junell

HAROLD EDWARD MELVIN SR.
Harold Edward Melvin Sr., 64,
of Crossville, passed away Oct. 27, 2000. Funeral services were
conducted Oct. 30 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with
burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Bros. David Purdy and Charles
Martin officiated, with special music by Jay Fox and Betty Green
and family tapes.
Mr. Melvin was born July 30, 1936, in Huntington, WV, the son
of James and Ollie Nicley Melvin.
He was a truck driver for the county, and a member of the Church
of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Owens Melvin of Crossville;
daughters, Tonya Burgess of Hendersonville, NC, Donna Burson
of Reed City, MI, Becky Herrington of Hutchinson, KS, and Paula
Bergey of Marion, MI; sons, Ed Melvin Jr. of Hendersonville and
Jerry Melvin of Marion, MI; stepdaughter, Teresa Holt of Crossville;
stepsons, David Holt, Leonard Holt and Tim Holt, all of Crossville;
sisters, Crickett Myers of Coshocton, OH, and Audrey Hollar of
Lima, OH; brother, Robert Melvin of Kenton, OH; 16 grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ollie Melvin;
and two brothers.
Pallbearers were Joey Whittenburg, Joey Davis, Danny Austin,
Ted Brown, Floyd Monday and Mike Harville.

THOMAS LEE STANTON
Thomas Lee Stanton, 57, of Crossville,
passed away Oct. 26, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Oct.
31 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Browntown
Cemetery. Sister Debbie Hensley officiated, with special music
by Tony Brown, Debbie Hensley and Dwana Deck.
Mr. Stanton was born July 20, 1943, in Wayne County, MI, the
son of Elmer Frederick and Mary Louise Davis Stanton.
He was a self-employed sign painter.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Stephens Stanton of Crossville;
mother, Mary Louise Stanton of Hurricane, WV; daughter and son-in-law,
Vickie and Paul Bell of Fitzgerald, GA; daughter, Patricia Stanton
of Madison Heights, MI; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Judy
Stanton of Wyandotte, MI; stepchildren, Rachael Love, Pam King,
Karen King, Richard Norris and Gina Null; sister and brother-in-law,
Judy and Glenn Taylor of Hurricane; brother, James Stanton of
Hamtramck, MI; and eight grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Paul Bell, Ron Eby, Steven Stanton, Matthew
Stanton, Andy Love and Tony Brown.

LENA MAE EDMONDS
Lena Mae Edmonds, 91, of Sparta,
TN, passed away Oct. 25, 2000, at WyndRidge Health and Rehabilitation
Center. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 28 from the chapel
of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial in Aikens Cemetery. Bros.
Mike Kerley and B.J. Brown officiated, with special music by
Ronnie Neal.
Mrs. Edmonds was born April 7, 1909, in Cumberland County, the
daughter of James and Liza Aikens Dodson.
She was a homemaker, and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanetta and
John Farr and Janice and Max Carroll, all of Crossville, Gweldia
and Max Neal of Chattanooga, TN, Eloise and Jim Barclay of Marietta,
GA, Genene and Will Middleton of Blakely, GA, and Debbie and
Gary Green of Thomasville; sons and daughters-in-law, James and
Elsa Edmonds of Crossville, Joseph B. and Betty Edmonds of Milton,
FL, Monroe and Sue Edmonds of Lakepark, GA, and Daniel and Karen
Edmonds of West Memphis, AR; 26 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren;
and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Posey Brown Edmonds.
Pallbearers were Monroe Edmonds Jr., Jay Edmonds Jr., Blaine
Farr, Alan Carroll, Mitchell Edmonds and Tim Edmonds.

GREGORY KEITH ROBBINS
Gregory Keith Robbins, 36, of
Crossville, passed away Oct. 25, 2000. Funeral services were
conducted Oct. 27 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with
burial in Grassy Cove Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Martha
Hale and the Rev. Fay Tucker officiated.
Mr. Robbins was born Sept. 15, 1964, in Crossville, the son of
Bobby and Ruth Kemmer Robbins.
He was a tile layer, and of the Methodist faith. He served in
the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his parents, Bobby and Ruth Robbins of Crossville;
brothers, Gary Robbins of Crossville and Wayne Robbins of Austin,
TX; grandfather, Litton Kemmer of Crossville; and two nieces,
Jana Robbins and Jaclyn Robbins, both of Crossville.
Pallbearers were his cousins, Mike Reagan, Victor Reagan, Paul
Robbins, Matthew Robbins, Josh Robbins and Bruce Miller.
Honorary pallbearers were Teddy Robbins, Freddy Robbins, David
King, Nelson Miller, Norman Reagan and Ray Kemmer.

JACK SCHEFFEL
Jack Scheffel, 78, of Fairfield
Glade, passed away Oct. 26, 2000. A memorial service will be
held Saturday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. at Fairfield Glade Community
Church, with the Rev. Dale Marshall officiating.
Mr. Scheffel was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Davenport, IA, the son
of Walter and Laura Scheffel.
He was employed by Northern Indiana Public Service Co. as an
appliance serviceman.
Survivors include his wife, Dianna Scheffel of Fairfield Glade;
sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Yoly Scheffel of Lubbock,
TX, Richard and Kate Scheffel of Munster, IN, Mark and Teresa
Scheffel of Griffith, IN, and Scott and Connie Scheffel of Elgin,
IL; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Roger Boer of Winamac,
IN, and Melinda and Steve Zabroski of Hammond, IN; brothers and
sisters-in-law, Wallace and Dorothy Scheffel of Fort Wayne, IN,
and Richard and June Thomas of Munster, IN; and sister, Lois
Scheffel of Deltona, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Laura Scheffel;
and a sister, Lola Stevenson.
